Announcement WFRP 5th Edition now available!

WFRP Fifth Edition is now available to pre order from Cubicle 7 here: https://cubicle7games.com/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-fifth-edition

Or as a pdf from DriveThruRPG here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/545405/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-fifth-edition-rulebook?affiliate_id=1915782

Cubicle 7 have repeatedly stressed that this is backwards compatible with 4th edition books.

(I should have a review of it on my blog in a few weeks.)

Here's the official blurb:

Adventure across a realm of brutal violence, corrupting magic, monstrous foes, and desperate heroes, where fortune can turn on a single roll of the dice and survival is never guaranteed. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Fifth Edition builds on the award-winning ruleset, refining the experience while capturing everything that makes Warhammer Fantasy legendary. Gather your party, choose your path, and prepare to face the grim and perilous reality of the World of Legend.

The Empire’s great cities stand as beacons of civilisation amid thick forests and a threatening wilderness. Its people face dangers from beyond their walls, from Beastmen and Goblins in the wilds to criminals, corrupt institutions, and insidious cults within. Chaos is never far away, and those who venture into the wider world soon discover that survival is rarely guaranteed.

This 378 page rulebook includes:

Five distinct Character types. Whilst most folk in the World of Legend are human, they share their lands with stoic dwarfs and garrulous halflings and receive visitors from the wood elf realms and high elf kingdoms.

64 distinct careers, representing the way of life your Character follows when not adventuring.

A guide to the major religions and the miracles performed by their Priests.

Spells from several different magical traditions.

A bestiary of foes, both common and scarce.

Advice on running games as a GM.

Streamlined rules for combat, pursuits, diseases, and other perilous phenomena.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay has provided gamers with a rich and detailed setting of perilous adventure and deadly threats for over 40 years. With a wealth of supporting material, including scenarios, campaigns, setting books, and player resources available from Cubicle 7, there’s plenty to keep a gaming group adventuring for years.

Game Mastering Adapting Blood & Snow

Hello,

I am running a game for a 3 person party, it's a heavily modified scenario from Starter Set. One of the characters is interested in joining the cult of Ulric, I thought that the test for them being catching Reikhardt Gestaltenstark would fit.

The party consists of an ogre Soldier, Human Huntress (The player who aspires to being a priestess of Ulric) and an elven Mage Apprentice, all of them at rank 2 so far. Human is also extremely tall an muscular, so overall they are quite an conspicuous bunch. I've been thinking about how to approach this as sneaking or trying to look like employees of this place certainly will not be an option, so far I have been thinking about offering one of them to join the arena in hopes of fighting him at some point, as having to cut through his guards (other pit fighters) sounds like a suicidal task. Did anyone try something different with this campaign idea? how did you do it?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Game Mastering Heart of Glass ending (4e)?

Can anyone help me figure out how the ending of Heart of Glass makes sense?

Essentially these two wizards hate each other and each want the same device. One of them is the good wizard (SH) and has been subdued by the other one, the bad wizard (CE).

The party comes up, saves SH, then CE shows up, seemingly does nothing, runs away with nothing, and the kills himself to kill the party while SH gets away with the device?

They were enemies. I’m very confused why one would sacrifice themselves to let the other get away for nothing more than to kill the players.

Discussion Can you play 5e with a d20?

Alright so this is probably a bit controversial but I'm seriously interested in your thoughts on this. When 5e was released I followed the discussions and information and wasn't hyped but couldn't identify why. It just felt like the changes and simplifications didn't work for me. Full disclosure I haven't bought the book.

Now, there was a discussion over at r/rpg about what the strengths of d100 systems are. Two of the most popular answers were that 1. it's easy to get a feeling for the difficulty of any given check before rolling because percentile is intuitive for most of us and 2. the granularity in leveling up which allows for slower, longer games with steady progression. Then it klicked. From what I heard about the changes in 5th ed, they got rid of exactly those two things. There is now only +/- SL (applied after the roll) instead of modifiers for the value you roll against. So I always roll against my skill with only a vague feeling for the actual difficulty. And skills now increase in increments of 5, not using the granularity of the d100 system. To put it in a hot take you could just use a d20 for the game to get the same results.

Yes I know there are other things that the system uses for the d100 like reversing dice and using doubles for crits but I'm sure there are other ways to model those things (DnD style advantage and crits come to mind).

Did I miss something or misinterpret something? What are your thoughts?

Edit: I'm not actually planning on running WFRP on a d20, it's more a thought experiment. To put it in a different way: What's the point of using d100 if it's functionally the same as a d20 in the games context?

Homebrew Free WHFRP support app - Grimbook

Hey everyone!

I’ve created a free character and session management app for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (4th Edition) called Grimbook.

🔗 Link: https://grimbook.app/

Here’s what it offers:

- Automated Character Sheet: Automatically calculates Skill totals from Attributes, Armor Points per location, Wounds, Encumbrance, and XP costs strictly according to the rulebook.

- Step-by-Step Character Creator: Follows the official creation rules, complete with random rolls and bonus XP. You can also easily transfer an existing character sheet.

- One-Click Rolling: Roll for Attributes and Skills instantly, with automatic Success Level calculations.

- Game Master Tools: Manage campaigns and sessions, award XP to the party, keep session notes, and generate NPCs (by species, career, and tier). You have full control over which NPCs are visible to your players.

- Bilingual Support: Fully available in both English and Polish, featuring official terminology from both rulebooks.

I’ve set up a live demo so you can test all the features from both a GM and a Player perspective right away without signing up.

Logging in is handled via Google Account, leaving the security of sensitive data to a tech giant

Since I’m developing this project completely on my own, there might still be a few undiscovered bugs. If you spot any, feedback is greatly appreciated!

Give it a try and let me know what you think.
Happy testing! 🎲

Game Mastering Automatic failures and successes confuses me (4e)

so in the core rulebook it says:
"If you roll 96–00 on any Test, it is always a failure. A failure

occurs even if your modified characteristic or skill is 96 or higher.

Similarly, if you roll 01–05 on a Test, it is always a success."

In melee combat one of my players rolled a 4 on WS, they have 30 or something in WS, so a +3SL.
My monster rolled a 12 in WS and have 65WS, so a +5SL.
At first i thought my player lost this, but then they mentioned that 1-5 is "critical success", i vaguely remembered reading something about when you rolled 1-5, but didn't remember if it was a "critical success" or "automatic success" (the critical thing comes up often since they're more used to playing DnD).

Now after googling a bit someone said that if you roll 1-5 it's an automatic success, but not in combat since that's an opposed test. That this "automatic success" only applies for simple tests and not opposed test.
But someone else said that it applies for combat too (so opposed tests), and if the monster has higher SL in that instance (like in my case) then the test would default to a minimum of +1SL to calculate dmg for the one who rolled 1-5.

Im so confused about this now, i ended up going along with my players saying it was a "critical success" but i deeply regret this, because now my enemies accumulate critical wounds even faster... which then again leads to them stomping most combat encounters... (which is a different problem i have)

Anyone know what the official way to handle this is? or do i just gotta "settle" for a way.

EDIT: Thank youuu!!!! That cleared the misunderstanding i had. Legit the finale of the first campaign got dunked on because i had this wrong... Well i wont make that mistake again :) Thank youuu!!!

Homebrew WFRP 4e: Has Anyone Tried Objective-Based PvP or Skirmish Battles?

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for some advice on an idea I've been considering for my WFRP 4e campaign.

A few of my players have asked if we could run some kind of team-based PvP battles, such as 2v2 or 3v3 matches. I'd like to give it a try, but I can see a few potential problems:

  • XP differences: Some characters have considerably more experience than others, which could make the matches unbalanced.
  • Different combat capabilities: Some careers are much better suited for combat than others, and not every character is built to be a frontline fighter.
  • The system itself: WFRP isn't really designed for competitive PvP, so I'm concerned that the combat mechanics might make these matches unbalanced or frustrating.

Here's what I've been thinking about trying:

  1. Balance teams based on total XP. For example, a team with a 2,500 XP character and a 500 XP character could face a team with two 1,500 XP characters. I know XP doesn't necessarily reflect actual combat effectiveness, but it might be a starting point.
  2. A quick shopping phase before each match, allowing players to prepare their equipment and consumables.
  3. Preparation encounters or side quests. Each team could complete 2–3 endeavour between adventures before the match to obtain temporary buffs, unusual items, hired henchmen, information about the opposing team, or other advantages.
  4. Objective-based matches with multiple rounds. Rather than simply trying to eliminate the opposing team, I'd like each match to have specific objectives and alternative win conditions.

For example:

  • Capture the flag: Steal the opposing team's flag and bring it back to your starting area.
  • Control points: Hold a specific area for a certain number of rounds or accumulate points by controlling it.
  • Sabotage or destruction: Destroy an enemy objective while protecting your own.
  • Rescue mission: Reach a prisoner or hostage and escort them to safety.
  • Payload or escort: Protect a character, cart, or other objective while moving it across the battlefield.
  • Survival or extraction: Secure an item and escape the battlefield before the opposing team can stop you.

I think objective-based gameplay could make things more interesting and give characters who aren't particularly good at fighting other ways to contribute. It could also encourage tactical decisions instead of having every match turn into a fight to the death.

I'm aware that WFRP isn't really built for this kind of gameplay, but I'd like to experiment with it and see if I can make it work.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Discussion Rules you want from 4th Edition in 5th?

For folks swapping from 4th over to 5th edition (as I'm currently doing so), are there any rules you plan on keeping/porting from 4th edition? The main ones that spring to mind are possibly the more robust weapons lists from Up in Arms, and the more Magic/Religion/Species-specific careers, especially for careers like Wizards and Priests. Clearly will need to review qualities, talents, etc., to make sure everything still works, though.

5th Edition's difficulty table also doesn't have the "higher difficulties" (Futile, Impossible) that were included in the Enemy Within. Seems like an easy enough option to pull in at a -4 and -5SL, respectively.

Anything else that you think warrants bringing up to 5th Edition? It would, of course, be wonderful if C7 gave us an update doc with any needed updates directly, but I'm expecting to do some lifting of my own here.

Lore & Art Searching for a map

So I’m searching for a specific map, and I hope this community can help me.

About 12-16 years ago, some friends and I started a Warhammer Fantasy campaign, and it all started in a town called Herringstadt. The GM showed us a map with the small town on it, and onward we went. Now, many years later, we’ve been searching for that map, but with no luck. So I’m hoping there are some great and amazing people here who might be able to help us.

We are searching for a Warhammer Fantasy map with the small town of Herringstadt. We think it is in the Wasteland of the Empire, but we could be wrong.

Looking forward to your help! 😄

Game Mastering Petty Magic in 5E

I read in the rule book that Petty Magic can now not be Overcast.

I'm currently creating a wizard with petty Magic and wanted to give him Dart.

But now Dart only does 0 Dam + WPB so 4 Dam for this character not modified by anything else other than the enemies Toughness and Armour. This is likely to be around 4... making Dart a useless spell. Unless I'm missing something?

Roleplaying Success levels on Casting Roll on Foundry

Playing 4e with Foundry module, without Winds of Magic or other optional rules, we have encountered a problem:

My wizard has 58 in total for Language (Magic) and 3 levels of Instinctive Diction, giving me +3 SL on successes. I have to enter those levels each time when casting - and when i roll 40, i indeed have 4 SL (1+3) for the roll.

However, module seems to cap SLs at 5. When i roll 8, i am supposed to have 8 SLs in total (5+3) - but i only get 5, thus i am not able to cast most spells or overcast even a Bolt. I dont see any rule that says "Your SLs are limited by your attribute bonus", or anything similar - so what do you think its the problem here?

Schon mal vielen Dank für die Antworten
