DISCUSSION Adobe Illustrator - Everyday workflow improvements

Post image
59 Upvotes

Hey everyone, Luke from Adobe here.

Over the past year or so, the Illustrator team has shipped a number of quality-of-life improvements. Some have been fairly visible, while others are much smaller changes that simply remove little points of friction from day-to-day work.

I wanted to break these up into a series focused on different areas and workflows, starting with some of the simpler everyday workflow improvements. I've shared a few of these here previously, but thought it would be useful to bring them together in one place, especially for anyone who may have missed them.

One-click Align Center

If you regularly align objects to center, you no longer need to click Horizontal Center and Vertical Center separately. A single command now does both. HelpX

Keyboard shortcuts for Align & Distribute

Along with the new Align Center, commands like Align to Selection, Align to Key Object, Align to Artboard, and Distribute Space now have menu commands, meaning you can assign keyboard shortcuts and create Actions to make frequently used operations even easier to repeat.

Absolute Scale in Transform Each

With Relative mode you could only scale objects in relation to the selected object, but now with Absolute mode you can scale everything to the defined amount, even if they are all at different sizes. Reddit post

Disable Accidental Hover Scrolling

Ever accidentally changed a value just by scrolling over a number field or even in fonts? You now have the option to disable that behavior, so you can click inside the field, then scroll to adjust parameters. You can change this behavior inside your preferences.

Magic Wand Remembers Settings

If you've had to reset the Magic Wand tolerance every time you restarted Illustrator, those settings are now remembered between sessions. Reddit post

Tiff support in Export for Screens

TIFF format was added to the Export for Screens, making it easier to batch export artboards and assets for your print projects.

Improved Object Selection Around Shadows

Selecting objects beneath those with drop shadows (glows etc) is now more predictable, making it less likely you'll accidentally select the shadow instead of the artwork you're trying to edit.

Perspective Tool Improvements

If you've accidentally activated the Perspective Tool before, you'll probably appreciate that it's now much clearer how to exit with an updated X in the top left of your canvas, but you can always simply hit ESC.

___________________________________________________________________________________

I'm curious to hear how many of these you already knew about, and whether they've actually made a difference to your workflow.

More importantly, what are the small points of friction you still run into regularly in Illustrator? Are there repetitive steps, unnecessary clicks, settings that don't stick, or other little frustrations that you'd consider a genuine quality-of-life improvement if they were addressed?

This is the first in a series looking at different areas of Illustrator, so I'll be sharing more of these soon.

I can draw, but it doesn't look good in logos / mascots

• Upvotes

Okay, I know how to draw (like drawing on pen and paper) but whenever I translate it digitally, it doesn't look good for logos and/or mascots, for some reason it just looks really... off? Beginner-looking?

Like for example there's a restaurant that wants to have a mascot as their logo, but every studies I make just translates to childish, for kids, etc. instead of getting the vibe that it's an approachable brand.

I dont know how to describe it, maybe it's a style issue. I've previously taught myself how to draw cartoon or anime. Maybe you guys could help me pinpoint how to draw logos as mascots err... professionally? Or what makes a good mascot logo? Thanks!

QUESTION Need help with scaling - my document window is tiny!

Post image
6 Upvotes

Why is my document window so tiny? I worked in this file a couple months ago with no issues - the document window filled the entire workspace and I can zoom in and out of the artboard no problem. When I opened it today, the document window was tiny and I'm only able to work in the upper left hand corner that I've marked in red. I've tried the following fixes with no luck:

- changing the UI scaling settings to Large

- changed the high DPI settings --> scaling override behavior changed to System (enhanced)

- changing the Windows Display settings to the default

- reset the zoom level

- window > arrange > consolidate all windows

For reference, I'm running Windows 11 pro. It is up to date. My display resolution is 3456 x 2160. Scale is set to the recommended 250%. HDR is turned on.

Any thoughts?

TY!

This is driving me SO crazy. I know there are some objects in my file (they are invisible, no fill no stroke - I guess) and even though they Appear in the exported PDF, in both Preview and Acrobat as thick is grey lines I cannot find them to delete them. When I hover over the shape it does highlight but won't select. Help! I'm on a deadline.....

  • Are visible in Illustrator’s Outline mode (⌘Y), but invisible in normal Preview mode.
  • Can’t be selected with Command+A.
  • Aren’t resolved by copying the artwork into a new document.
  • Don’t appear to be hidden or locked using Illustrator’s usual commands.

Having trouble trying to colour separate parts of this circle.

Post image

I’m trying to colour parts of the red circle as seen on the right. I’m on iPad and I’ve tried everything I’ve been trying to use pathfinder and I’m still figuring it out, im pretty new to illustrator.
Tried minus front but it doesn’t separate the circle at all it just gets rid of the lines and leaves behind the red circle in tact. So yeah im at a loss I’ve seen people on pc have no problem with separating the circle into parts, it’s just on iPad I’m clearly missing something and its pmo.

If anyone knows how I can turn the red circle into what I’ve got on the right it would be really appreciated.

QUESTION Help with copied text from saved PDF turns into strange characters

Post image

Title: Illustrator saves PDFs with corrupted text (copy/paste gives garbage characters), but only for PDFs from Word and LibreOffice and some specifics fonts. Arial for example.

Hi all, I'm stuck on a problem I haven't been able to solve.

I work on an official gazette and receive finished PDFs from other people. I open them in Illustrator for adjustments and save them as PDF again. With some files, the PDF Illustrator writes has corrupted text: if I select and copy the text in a PDF viewer, strange characters appear instead of letters.

The page looks fine visually, and the problem only shows up when copying or searching the text. When I try to copy, I get tab symbols and small dots instead of letters.

To isolate the cause, I ran a test with a short sentence in Arial, written in four different programs and exported to PDF:

Word: corrupted after going through Illustrator.

LibreOffice Writer: corrupted as well.

Google Docs: comes out correct.

Inkscape: I opened the Word PDF in Inkscape, exported it again, and took that to Illustrator. It came out correct.

Some details that may help:

I use File > Open. The text is selectable, the font shows as ArialMT Regular, and there is no missing-font warning.

If I copy the text inside Illustrator and paste it elsewhere, it comes out right. The error only appears in the PDF it saves.

The same thing happens on other computers. I also tried File > Place, which didn't help.

The defect only shows up with certain files and certain fonts, not all of them.

The source PDFs are fine: the text copies normally when they are opened in any other viewer.

When saving, I use "Save as PDF with default options".

I examined the internal structure of the test PDFs and found a difference that might be a clue. In the Google Docs and Inkscape files, the embedded font has a Unicode character table (cmap 3,1) with the real letter values. In the Word files, the embedded font has no cmap at all, with renumbered glyphs (1, 2, 3…). In the LibreOffice files, it only has a Macintosh-type cmap (1,0) with arbitrary codes. In both cases the text exists only in the PDF's ToUnicode mapping, which is present and correct. It looks like Illustrator doesn't make use of it when rewriting the file.

This explanation doesn't fully hold up: the PDF that Illustrator itself writes from the good file also has no cmap in the font and works. So I'm not sure the missing cmap is the cause. I think it's a useful clue, but not a conclusive one.

Has anyone seen this before? Is there an import or export setting that makes Illustrator preserve the text of these PDFs without going through Inkscape? I can't convert files one by one, because there are too many and they arrive already finished.

EDIT 1: I work for a "municipal official gazette"—a mandatory digital publication for municipal governments. In reality, no changes are made to these PDFs; they are simply inserted into templates that include a header and a footer.

QUESTION Can the shape builder tool (or anything else) be used to remove part of this stroke with the red square?

Thumbnail

I'll try to explain this as best as possible: Part of the black stroke is underneath the red square. I don't want that there. I want to be able to remove part of the stroke with the black square. I've tried removing it with the shape builder tool. Clicking on the square/dragging it just deletes the square's fill, and holding Alt while clicking on it just removes the square completely. In both instances, the stroke still appears. I'm assuming this is a problem with trying to use this tool with a stroke, but I could be wrong. Is there anyway to delete the part of the stroke where the square overlaps?

Weird dieline

Client sent me a dieline, everything is a single spot color from rectangles with zero difference between cuts and creases.Should I do anything with the creasing/folding lines or should I just leave the entire dieline untouched as it is? Also, how should I handle the bleeds for the outer edges since there are no bleed lines provided?

QUESTION Need help with gradients :(

I made an object shaped like a cat head in illustrator for a logo, and I need to add dimension to it. I wanted to add a gradient and then bitmap the gradient so it had a textured effect. however I can’t get it to work. I applied mesh to the object so I could add the gradient to specific points, however now the gradient tool won’t do anything. usually the bar in the tool has the gradient in it, but it’s just all white, even though the opposite point is set to black. I’ve tried adjusting position and size but nothing shows up. I’ve tried all three types of gradients. i tried clearing the appearance and then trying again but still nothing. I am concerned the mesh is a problem, but I can’t remove it and I wanted to have the gradient from certain points in it anyway, so I’m not sure what to do. right clicking the object offers the option to undo gradients, so I think it must be doing something, but they aren’t actually visible at all. I would appreciate any help bc the fixes I’ve found online haven’t worked :(

QUESTION Is there a way to make a brush stroke different from another?

Post image

Apologies if the question does not make sense and/or is dumb (I'm typically an AE user, and fairly new to Illustrator), but I'm using Art Brush 6, and I want to make these lines look different, but use the same brush. Is this possible? Many thanks

MacOS27 support 1 month later

Now that it’s been over a month since MacOS27 has released, how is it for everyone? Is everything running smoothly? I heard Wacom Tablet drivers were causing some issues before Wacom released a patch, but is everything else working?

Hey! "Cthulhu" artwork, originally created as a T-shirt design in Illustrator. But, as often happens, the idea evolved into something different.

I adapted the artwork into a car wrap design, and the result is this cute little car cruising around the streets. It’s also been featured at a few car shows, so some of you might have even seen it in person!

Made a sticker/poster design for my class

Designed these using illustrator, had a few issues but came out great imo.
Backstory: school used generative Ai to make posters when there’s a Digital art and design class upstairs(the first one is pointing up because it’s for the posters on the first floor, the other one is a fist for posters on the same floor), which i am in, so i’m making stickers to remind them we exist and definitely not to vandalize any of the generative Ai posters.

EDIT: EDIT: Reddit may automitcally remove a link to gumroad (although I could still see it)

livetools (dot) gumroad (dot) com

Hey, thanks to everyone who go Live Spiral! Hope its working well for you. I have a new tool out - Live Wave, borne out of my want for a good Sine wave and coil in illustrator. Niche right? But it turns out when you add other waveforms and some fit to path magic, even a randomiser - you can generate quite a variety of useful assets. Separately, I added another tool (actually my first tool) which is a trim paths tool (inspired by after effects. I'll pop a link in comments.
