Car broken into on Keizersgracht (Amsterdam) last Tuesday: where should we look for our stolen belongings?

Hi everyone,

My wife and I travelled from Belgium to Amsterdam last Tuesday, October 20, and unfortunately our car was broken into shortly after we arrived, near Keizersgracht 274.

The thieves took a travel bag containing a designer handbag, a pair of designer shoes and a laptop, as well as a separate laptop bag containing a second laptop.

We realise the chances of recovering our belongings may be slim, but we’d really appreciate some local advice. Which second-hand websites, shops, markets or local groups would you suggest keeping an eye on?

Are there also any places or services worth checking in case the bags or other belongings were discarded nearby?

If anyone witnessed anything or has been through something similar in Amsterdam, we’d be grateful for any useful information or advice.

Thanks so much for your help!

P.S. We’d also like to mention how extraordinarily kind, compassionate and generous with their time the police officers were when taking our statement. Their support meant a lot to us during a very upsetting experience.

Jam sessions

Hi everyone, hope ya’ll having a great week!

I’m kinda new in the city, I’m now finally settling down and would love to meet new people and play some gigs with them.

I’m a guitar player and looking for nice bars for jam sessions, I can play pretty much anything but looking mostly for rock/blues/jazz sessions.

Does anyone have good recommendations? Also would love some guidance on how this stuff normally works, never participated in a jam session.

Thanks in advance!

Who wants to join my play about street harassment?

Hi! I'm a theatre student at the Toneelacademie Maastricht and I'm creating my own play this year. It revolves around street harassment, power dynamics, watching and being watched. I'm looking for performers who feel a personal connection to this theme, specifically women and LGBTQIA+. The auditions are next week, if you're interested send me a message!

Can anyone identify the artist of this oil painting of Amsterdam?

Hi everyone!

I recently found this oil painting in my apartment in Austria. It appears to depict an old canal in Amsterdam, possibly the Oudezijds Kolk or Oudezijds Voorburgwal, looking towards the Sint-Nicolaaskerk.

The painting is an actual oil painting on canvas, with visible brushstrokes. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a signature, date, or any other identifying information on the front or back.

There may be some initials or a signature hidden in the details of one of the boats, but I'm not sure.

Does anyone recognize the location or happen to know which artist might have painted it?

Any information about the artist, approximate age, or origin of the painting would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Looking for fine-art nude photographers in Amsterdam

Hey everyone!

I'm helping a friend of mine who's based in Amsterdam find photographers interested in fine-art nude photography.

She's an experienced nude pose model with previous experience working with local photographers, and she's interested in connecting with artists whose work focuses on the artistic and creative side of nude photography.

If you're a photographer based in Amsterdam or nearby and this sounds like something you'd be interested in, feel free to reach out.

Photographers working with fine-art, artistic nude, or editorial-style photography are especially welcome to reach out. Portfolio links would be appreciated too!

Thanks! :)

Question Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists)

This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.

READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.

HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.

TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.

WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.

WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.

RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.

USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.

DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

Here is what's on at the major venues this week.

Dutch taalcafé/ grammar practice on weekends in Amsterdam A1/A2?

Hello guys,

who is up to meet up in Amsterdam to get together to practice speaking, look into grammar together in a supportive pace, bringing our sources perhaps, when we could talk things over have a good supportive chat about Dutch language and everyday realistic useful conversations on the weekends and to interact with each other...?

I have a lot of books as sources I can bring, I am A2 by the way, but I thought it would be a great kickstart.

Looking for a recommendation for a driver instructor (EN)

A friend of my failed the driving exam first time after more than 40hrs.

She’s looking for a different instructor that can help with the second time.

Do you have recommendations of instructors for English lessons?

She tried 3 instructors at the current school with different levels of success.

Some of them don’t explain properly, some only work during the week or only weekends, etc.

Looking for some personal recommendations

Footage request – Amsterdam Marathon 18 Oct 2026, Olympic Stadium finish area ~13:22–13:27

🔎 Looking for a video – TCS Amsterdam Marathon, Sunday 18 Oct 2026

Around race clock 4:22–4:27 (≈13:22–13:27), inside the Olympic Stadium, ~200 m before the finish: I collapsed on the track and stayed down for a while before people helped me up and across the line. It is a very important moment for me and I would love to have a video of this whole moment (it is not in the photos / video pack I bought)

Bib 11114 – white T-shirt, black shorts.

If you were in the stands and filmed it (even in the background), please message me! 🙏

🇳🇱 Iemand gefilmd in het Olympisch Stadion rond 13:25? Laat het me weten!

I know this might be a long shot but i saw this painter painting the view from the Ijplein ferry stop. I was a bit in a rush and didn’t want to distract him so I didn’t talk to him but now thinking I should’ve asked for his contacts. Does anyone maybe know him? Would love to check out if he has more paintings of Amsterdam:)

Map of Amsterdam from bird's eye view

Thumbnail

A while ago in Paris I came across the Turgot map (1739), the huge bird’s-eye plan where every street, courtyard and building is drawn individually. I couldn’t stop looking at it, and it made me want to try the same thing for modern cities, starting with Berlin, where I’ve lived for over five years. And I've added Amsterdam just now.

Right now I have Berlin, Amsterdam, Munich, Hamburg and Vienna.

Happy to answer questions about the process. Which city should I do next? Any other part of Amsterdam you would want to see like this?

Edit: AI disclosure, Built from OpenStreetMap and open city data with my own pipeline, no AI were used. Stop being paranoid people. (And Rude)

*Witnesses wanted – Strong Viking Amsterdam, Saturday 26 September 2026*

My brother and I took part in the 13 km course, starting in the 11:40 wave.

At obstacle 27 – the hanging bars and rings on a scaffold structure just before a water station – I was hanging from one of the bars at around 13:00 when one side of the bar came loose from its attachment. The bar dropped into a vertical position, and I fell to the ground.

I suffered a comminuted fracture of my right index finger and required surgery. It is not yet clear whether I will make a full recovery. The obstacle lane was closed for a short time after the incident.

*Were you at or near this obstacle around that time?*

Did you witness the incident, pass through shortly before or afterwards, or notice anything about the obstacle or its connections that might be relevant?

Please send me a private message describing, in your own words, what you personally saw or noticed and approximately when you were there. Please also include your name and a way to contact you.

Strong Viking has been informed of the incident. We enjoyed the event overall, and our aim is simply to establish as clearly as possible what happened. Please refrain from speculation about the cause or responsibility. We are only looking for factual information and first-hand accounts.

Thank you very much for your help!

*Photos:*

  1. Me shortly before the fall (photo by the official Strong Viking event photographer).

  2. Obstacle 27, photographed approximately one hour after the incident, following repairs.

  3. X-ray showing my injury.

A 3D recreation of Amsterdam to learn the city

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Over the past few months I've been throwing too many tokens and too many nights at a edutainment game that was originally a little top down spy hunter / gta style boating game to learn the canal names that has now turned into me trying to model every building in the city to build a game to learn the streets, canals, bridges, landmarks and trivia about the city.

https://rideamsterdam.nl/

It uses spaced repetition behind the scenes to help you learn the street names, and has both a multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank version. For almost every street, it has an explanation of the source/history/meaning of the name.

The game has a huge focus on accuracy of the landscape. It has 500+ individually modeled buildings, and tries very hard to generate reasonable looking buildings based on size, location and age where it doesn't have custom models. I have a pipeline going to build per-buurt generators as well.

When I started modeling all the buildings I thought "oh lots of canal houses, it will be easy to have a couple of roofs, couple of windows and done, I can make any house in the city by mixing and matching" (this was not the case). As a result, noticing all the subtle (and not-so-subtle) variations across the city's architecture has been a beautiful and unexpected part of the development experience.

There's a github repo with all buildings as CC-BY and they're just pretty fun to look at https://rideamsterdam.nl/explore?model=adam-tower

Full disclosure this is entirely vibe coded slop. There are probably bugs and I am happy to fix them. If anyone wants to throw tokens at the modeling effort or hear more about the build process, get in touch!

EDIT: working on performance & crash fixes as we speak, have mostly been testing on an overpowered mac up until now

It's for ~50sqm apartment

Edit: Thanks for the replies, I had a call with the builder and it cleared up some things for me. He works a little different to my previous builder but the numbers all check out now, and it seems fair and reasonable to me.

Winter Swimming

Hi! I've been swimming in a canal next to my house all year and I'd love to keep going, however I'm not sure about how safe it is after the recent rainfall and now that I can't check on zwemwater any more. It's a canal that feeds into the IJ and isn't connected to other canals, there's almost no boat traffic. Anyone have any ideas?

Goeie orthodontisten in Amsterdam

Hi iedereen.
