Discussion So, the distant relatives aren’t any better than the near relatives

Anyone else finding the family dysfunction extends well beyond the family members you know? Idon’t know what’s wrong with people anymore.

I’m no contact with my family of origin because there is extreme dysfunction.

Anyway, I recently did an Ancestry test and I just got the results. And I then immediately received a message from someone who is, apparently, a distant cousin.

I thought the original question was a little odd, but I give people the benefit of the doubt, so I answered honestly and thoroughly. I believe people have the right to know where they came from.

And because I’m sure people will want to know, I’ll tell you exactly what he wanted. This is an African American man. I’m Canadian, from very recent European immigrants. Until I received my ancestry results I never would have imagined that I have cousins in the USA because my line of the family arrived in Canada when my father arrived.

So I explained this, advised him where the connection would have come from (it’s on my father’s side). He had implied it was a great great grandfather who we shared (as in, we had the same great great grandfather and a different great great grandmother) but I told him that wasn’t possible. It must be a more circuitous family member than that because I know my direct lineage only arrived in North America with my father. He implied he doesn’t believe me.

And then it became clear that he doesn’t understand genetics and was just looking to start shit. He told me that he has very little European ancestry and because I don’t have African dna it was a “one way transfer” where I gave him some of my DNA.

Obviously, that’s not how this works. We both were born with DNA from a shared family line. It’s not my DNA, it’s our DNA.

And I absolutely understand how that is heavy and difficult. I can understand if he doesn’t want to acknowledge that part. He can do whatever the hell he wants with that information and process it however is best for him.

But I was just left thinking the guy needs therapy, not a DNA test.

And, considering how fucked up that side of the family is, he’s not doing a great job convincing me he’s not one of them.

Has anyone else received absolutely batshit crazy messages from distant family?

I have a Chinese Malaysian grandmother whose grandparent was Vietnamese. Other heritage is broadly from the UK and Ireland.
My younger sibling looks mixed, while my other younger sibling and me - you would not be able to guess that we have any Asian heritage. Anyone else with a similar story?

Family Discovery & or Drama How common is it for some Hispanics to grow up thinking they're "Spanish" only to discover indigenous ancestry later in life?

What inspired me to ask this is that I recently read this article about a news anchor named Kim Trujillo in New Mexico. She grew up believing she was pure "Spanish" and was surprised and delighted to learn she also had Native American ancestry.

My question is, is this a common thing among many Hispanics? I know she is from New Mexico so I'm not sure if this is specifically a thing there.

I just took my first ever DNA test and the results are surprising! I always knew half of my ancestry due to my mother but since my dad was not raised by his parents, most of the information on his side of the spectrum is unknown. I always get asked “ what am you” or “ where are you from” but never really knew how to answer. I got these results and it did give me some more clarity but i would like to know if they are reliable.

Results - DNA Origins Sudeten German Decedent results

• Upvotes

I know the latest AncestryDNA update has caused a massive wave of frustration across the community. I’ve seen a ton of posts about people watching their established regions completely disappear, DNA getting forced into modern political borders rather than historical ethnic populations, and the confusing UI glitch where regions like Western Czechia are grouped weirdly between map categories.

My results are a rare exception where the update actually aligned with my extensive paper trail, finally sorting out the complex historical reality of a border region like the Sudetenland.

My updated AncestryDNA map distribution: 3/4 Bohemia (Sudeten German Grandparents + Czech Grandmother) and 1/4 Norwegian Grandfather

Updated Results

I still feel the Norway is a little high for only having one grandparent from there. I’ve read that the English percentage could possibly be from the history of Viking raids and the mixing of people back then, so that might explain how the little bit of DNA is blending together. Who knows?

Discussion Ancestry Update

Does anyone else hate the new update where they moved the hints button?

The hints button is now furthur up and instead if it being another half page along with the Facts, Gallery, etc it is now a new page. You click and it sends you to a new page and I hate it, it messes up my work flow so much and I've only had it for less than 30 minutes.

To be fair, my mom did give a baby up for adoption, probably 15 years ago, so I’m curious if one day he’ll pop up.
