Effective immediately, if you have a device with the Google TV UI, please make one post at the Google TV subreddit, don't crosspost or repeat the same post on the Android TV subreddit, it will be deleted with the exception of:

- Posts about apps that work on both UIs.

- Posts of news articles that affects both UIs.

- Posts looking for advise on what device to buy.

It's worth mentioning that all posts will be reviewed for approval before they go live, so make sure you indicate the name of the device or the name of the UI on the title or description of your post.

Someone from Google is going to provide assistance on the Google TV subreddit, therefore, this is a good opportunity to provide feedback as well as to receive support from them.

This is their official statement:

Buying Advice XIAOMI... DO GOOGLETV/ANDROID TV OS AFFECT SIDELOADING 3rd PARTY APPS OR IPTV USE??

Hi guys!! I've been looking at getting a 3rd Gen Xiaomi Mi Box as due an upgrade soon! What i want to know is ... does having AndroidTV / Google TV as an operating system affect the ability to sideload 3rd party apps? This is my only concern in changing for a Xiaomi box! I've been using a Rocktech RK1 with 4/64 and tbh, its been pretty damn good, you can sideload anything, no restrictions at all, run Project Ivy as the launcher and IPTV/ 3rd party apps/ streaming work great with no major buffering or shutdown but due an upgrade soon! My only concern with the Xiaomi box us because they run on Google TV/ Android TV does this cause any restrictions with sideloading/ streaming apps or IPTV or running a different launcher? Thanks for your help guys! 😁😎

Discussion Stumbled on a fix for lagging Android settings menu?

I stumbled across something weird while troubleshooting lag on a couple of Android TV devices and figured I’d see if anyone else can reproduce it.

Tried this on a Sony A9S (Android 10), Sony X950H (Android 9), and CCwGTV 4K (Android 14). These commands clear the gfxinfo and SurfaceFlinger log files:

dumpsys gfxinfo com.android.tv.settings reset
dumpsys SurfaceFlinger --latency-clear
dumpsys SurfaceFlinger --timestats -clear
dumpsys SurfaceFlinger --clear-layer-stats

The Android settings menu became noticeably faster on all three, especially the Chromecast, which went from unusably sluggish to almost instant response. The stats told the same story too - the gfxinfo log showed stupid amounts of lag and jankiness in the log pre clear and much better metrics post.

AI's best guess is that SurfaceFlinger’s live in-memory timing/layer stats can somehow get into a bloated or pathological state, adding overhead during rendering. Clearing them may have reset that issue. FYI the last command listed (clear-layer-stats) isn't recognized in Android 14.

No idea if that’s actually the cause, but the result has been very obvious on three different devices.

Anyone else able to reproduce this?

Discussion Has anyone tried porting the original Apple tvOS to non-Apple hardware, specifically Android TVs?

I was wondering if anyone has ever attempted to get the actual, original Apple tvOS running on non-Apple hardware, particularly Android TV devices.

I know Hackintosh makes it possible to run macOS on non-Apple PCs, so I was wondering if a similar approach could theoretically work for tvOS.

I've also come across projects like HackiOS and UniXNU, which explore running Apple's OS components or XNU-based systems on non-Apple hardware.

Could a similar approach be possible with tvOS, using hardware compatibility work, kernel modifications, bootloader research, or some form of platform spoofing to make it behave like it's running on an Apple TV?

If it's fundamentally impossible, what exactly is the main blocker? Is it Apple's secure boot chain, hardware-specific drivers, kernel compatibility, or something else?

Has anyone researched this, attempted it, or found any relevant projects or proof-of-concepts? I'd love to know if there's any technical research on this, even if nobody has successfully booted it yet.

Troubleshooting Mi TV 4A 43" (L43M5-AI) stuck in boot loop after disabling com.android.tv.settings via ADB - Need help recovering

Hi everyone,

I have a Mi TV 4A 43 inch (model L43M5-AI) that is stuck on the Android logo and won't boot.

WHAT HAPPENED:

- I was trying to debloat my TV

- I wanted to set FLauncher as the default launcher, so I disabled com.android.tv.settings via ADB over Wi-Fi and restarted the TV

- This caused a boot loop - TV gets stuck on Android logo forever

WHAT IS ENABLED ON THE TV:

- Developer mode is enabled

- USB debugging is enabled

- ADB debugging is enabled

(All were enabled before the boot loop happened)

WHAT I'VE TRIED:

  1. ADB over Wi-Fi

    - Doesn't work - network never starts during boot

    - TV never shows up in adb devices

  2. ADB over USB [USB-A (TV) to USB-C (laptop) cable after unplugging power source]

    - No device shows in adb devices or fastboot devices

    - Windows Device Manager shows no new device

    - Only a red LED blinks on the TV when USB connected to laptop

  3. Recovery mode via remote.

Tried pressing these buttons before plugging in the power cable into the socket:

- Back + Home - doesn't work

- Back + Volume Down - doesn't work

- Holding OK/Select during boot - doesn't work

- Home + Menu - doesn't work

  1. USB firmware flash

    - Have update.zip on FAT32 USB drive

    - Plugged into USB port 1 during boot - TV bootloader not detecting it

    - Found what appears to be the correct full firmware (500MB+) at:

http://drive.google.com/file/d/1_vBNaKPbncZUECh0-14wLt8GfDcsdjCa/view

  1. Physical power button on TV

    - Doesn't respond on this model

DEVICE DETAILS:

- Model: Mi TV 4A 43 inch

- Model code: L43M5-AI

- Purchased: April 2018

- Developer mode, USB debugging and ADB debugging all enabled

- TV board appears alive - red LED blinks when USB connected to laptop

SPECIFIC QUESTIONS:

  1. Has anyone successfully connected ADB over USB to Mi TV 4A 43" (L43M5-AI)? Which cable and which USB port on the TV?

  2. Has anyone successfully flashed firmware via USB on this exact model? Which USB port triggered the bootloader flash mode?

  3. Is the firmware at the Google Drive link above correct for L43M5-AI? Can anyone confirm before I flash it?

  4. Is there any other recovery method for this model that doesn't require a service centre?

Any help is massively appreciated. I just want to clean up the mess I created and get my TV working again.

Discussion Different WireGuard VPN tunnels per app on Android TV?

I'm looking for a way to assign different WireGuard configurations to specific apps on Android TV / Google TV.

For example:

  • App A → WireGuard Tunnel A (Spain)
  • App B → WireGuard Tunnel B (Germany)
  • App C → WireGuard Tunnel C (Turkey)
  • All other apps → No VPN (direct connection)

Ideally, this would work automatically without manually switching VPN connections whenever I open another app.

I'm specifically looking for true simultaneous per-app VPN routing, rather than a solution that detects the foreground app and switches the device-wide VPN connection.

Does anyone know of an existing app, open-source project, or workaround that supports this using WireGuard configurations?

I'm also open to solutions that require root or custom development.

Discussion Vibe-coded debloating - will it help?

Okay so my parents bought some cheap ass blaupunkt tv with android tv/google tv. It works horre dously and sometimes even just doesnt now what it wants to launch when turned on. I remember i tried installing some different light weight launcher but it was still kind of crap.

Now it seems like everyones vibe coding their tv os and i was wondering how effective this really is? Like is it just an overlay, or something deeper. Are they like replacing the actual android tv and writing from scratch or is it modified android tv or what. Also do i need a paid plan or is there some good os already available.

Ngl it would be a dream to somehow have it just as a dumb tv that has its channels from the antenna and only when you need it does it actually open yt or netflix. Its just so clunky right now that i have to wait for it to process a channel or volume change.

Buying Advice Android TV box vs internal Smart OS for YouTube TV

I'm switching my parents from DirecTV to YouTube TV since it has more channels and is less expensive. they have 3 smart TVs but I'm wondering if it's worth it to get an android TV box instead for them. They have a LG B4 OLED, 5 year old Samsung smart TV with Tizen, and a Hisense Google TV as well as a tiny 20 inch non-smart TV in their bathroom

I'm looking at getting multiple Onn 4k TV boxes since I think 1 device they will find easier to use than 4 different ones.

Especially Tizen, I'm a lot more tech savvy and I find Tizen absolutely annoying to use.

Buying Advice Switch from firestick to what?

Hi all, I have been using a sideloaded firestick for a while but want to upgrade to something more powerful, any suggestions for something around £100 £150? I hear the Nvidia are amazing but too expensive, just looking something that I can stream movies with no buffering. I see lots of options online but no idea what to go for.

Xiaomi, ONN are two that keep popping up and Formuler are the ones I keep seeing mentioned.

Thanks

Discussion My VU 55-inch QLED TV developed a display issue after 1 year and 2 months — VU quoted ₹32,000, but a local technician fixed it for ₹6,300.

I bought a VU 55-inch QLED TV in 2025 for around ₹72,000. After just 1 year and 2 months, the display started showing a greyish/washed-out colour issue.

I contacted VU customer support, but they told me the warranty had expired. They asked me to pay ₹800 for a technician visit and diagnosis, which I paid.

The technician came about a week later, opened the TV, inspected it, and told me that the display panel was faulty. According to him, the repair would cost around ₹35,000.

About a week later, VU emailed me an official quotation of ₹32,000 for replacing the display panel, with a one-year warranty on the replacement.

Naturally, I was shocked. I had already spent ₹72,000 on the TV, and now I was being asked to spend another ₹32,000–₹35,000 after barely a year of use.

Some friends suggested getting a second opinion from local TV repair technicians. I contacted two or three technicians, and two of them also quoted around ₹20,000–₹22,000 for the repair.

Then I contacted another local TV seller and technician near my area. He visited my home, checked the TV, and suggested that the problem was related to the T-Con board or another display-control component rather than the entire display panel.

His repair cost was just ₹5,500, and I paid ₹6,300 including labour. The TV is now working perfectly!

Think about that difference:

Original TV price: ₹72,000

VU's official quotation: ₹32,000

Local technician's final charge: ₹6,300

Current status: TV working perfectly

I understand that the TV is out of warranty, and I am not expecting free repairs. My concern is that the official diagnosis pointed towards an expensive display replacement, while a local technician was able to resolve the issue for a fraction of that amount.

I cannot say for certain whether the original diagnosis was incorrect without a detailed technical report, but the difference in the proposed repair costs is huge.

My question is: How does this kind of service experience help VU build customer trust?

If a customer spends ₹72,000 on a TV, they naturally expect it to last more than a year or two without a major issue. And if something does go wrong, they expect a reliable diagnosis and a reasonable repair option.

If I had blindly accepted VU's quotation, I might have spent ₹32,000 unnecessarily on a panel replacement when a much cheaper repair was possible.

Now, if I decide to buy another TV in the future, would I trust VU again? Honestly, this experience makes me think twice.

I'm sharing this to hear from other VU TV owners.

Has anyone else experienced something similar with VU's service centre or received a costly panel-replacement quotation that turned out to be a different issue?

I would genuinely like to know whether this is an isolated experience or something other customers have faced too.

Troubleshooting Title: Xiaomi Android TV suddenly plays audio but shows a black screen on YouTube and Xiaomi TV+

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
My Xiaomi Android TV suddenly stopped displaying videos today.

Both YouTube and Xiaomi TV+ have the same problem:

I can hear the audio normally.
The video itself is completely black.

The home screen, app menus, thumbnails and programme listings all display normally.

This happens in both apps, not just YouTube.
Everything was working fine before, and the problem started suddenly.

I’ve attached photos showing that the interfaces work, but the actual videos don’t display.

Has anyone experienced this before? Could it be a video decoder or software issue, or is it potentially a hardware problem?

Any suggestions on how to fix it without doing a factory reset would be appreciated. Thanks!
