I wanted to offer my first impressions of the Ultra 4 and the Series 12 Ti in case there is anyone like me who is considering one or both. I purchased them both with the intention of only keeping one. I've had them for a little over 24 hours so don't have much experience with them yet.
I come from years of wearing mechanical watches, mostly in the 38-40mm range. I've always loved traditional watches, but I feel it's time to switch it up and take advantage of some smart features around my lifestyle. I've worn an Apple Watch years ago, but I won't really be able to compare these to older models. This post is probably for someone looking to get their first in either line.
I will mostly just be taking about feel. I think most people reading this already know the specs, battery life, etc. For reference, I have a ~7in wrist. Also, I got both in the Milanese Loop for both, which I think works extremely well for both.
AWU 4
This thing looks so cool to me. Looks just as cool, toolsy, and sporty in person as it does in pictures. The looks is what initially drew me towards the Ultra. The flat screen with defined edges is so nice. The Ultra-exclusive watch faces are also so nice and what really completes it for me. I typically wouldn't go for a watch this size, but I really do love this screen, and the watch as a whole, to make the jump. I think you either really love the aesthetic of the case or you don't. The action button is a really nice bonus, but I don't think I would feel lost without it.
The Ultra definitely is a presence on your wrist. Especially if you've never worn a smart sports watch like an Ultra or a large Garmin, it will probably feel like a little bit of a shock at first. I am at least used to having some weight on my wrist, and I feel myself already getting used to the size. I even slept with it last night. It's impossible to not notice it when going to sleep, but once asleep, I was able to stay asleep without it bothering me. This is also something that will feel more natural with time I believe.
AW S12 Ti
This one is sooo sleek. If budget allows and you are set on the S12, I strongly recommend getting the Titanium. It looks so premium and versatile. I wouldn't hesitate wearing it to a more formal setting. I am not sure I can say the same about the Ultra as much as I love it. The slim, light profile really does kind of disappear on your wrist. If you don't want to feel like you're wearing a watch, this watch will make you happy, and as I mentioned above, I think the versatility is its other really big strength. I plan to sleep with this one tonight, and I don't think I'll be thinking about it being on my wrist much at all, especially after a successful night with the Ultra.
Here's a little bit of a kicker: I am trying out the 42mm rather than the 46. Personal taste, I just really appreciate the understated look when it comes to this watch. I'm not sure if it's due to the rounded screen or what, but I just like the smaller size in the S12. So I am testing out two ends of the spectrum basically, lol.
Final Thoughts
I went into this with the intention of only getting the Ultra, but then I wanted to also test out the S12 just in case the Ultra didn't work for me. I don't think you can go wrong either of these. I am by no means a serious athlete, but I see myself really appreciating what the Ultra brings. I know I would also love the sleek and versatile S12. This isn't to say that the Ultra is necessarily not versatile, but I think this is where the S12 shines over the Ultra.
I am not 100% decided yet, and I have flip-flopped over the last day, but if I had to choose right now, I would probably slightly lean Ultra. I think my heart is saying Ultra and my head is saying S12. I find myself more excited to put on the Ultra and look at the screen over the S12, and that's probably what will ultimately make the decision for me. With that said, it will certainly be a tough decision and I will be sad to let one go, as keeping both is just not an option for me.
I hope this can maybe help someone who is trying to decide or maybe isn't able to try both. I do not consider myself an expert on these devices by any means, but I would be happy to answer any questions I can. Or maybe there are folks who can offer their experience as well.
