CULTURE How do these shops survive?

I recently visited Japan after thinking about going for years, and one of the things I really enjoyed was not just Japanese design, but the way design seems to exist within everyday life.

While travelling, I came across so many small art and object shops. Some were focused on traditional crafts, others on contemporary Japanese art, prints, objects, music, food rituals, etc. A lot of them had very specific and unusual propositions, rather than feeling like typical retail stores.

It made me curious about how these places actually work in Japan.

Are they generally profitable businesses? Do they rely on tourism, local regulars, grants, other work, or a combination of things? And for people who run or work in these kinds of shops, what does the business side actually look like?

Would especially love to hear from Japanese people or anyone who has experience running one of these kinds of spaces.

LIFESTYLE Are we still friends?

• Upvotes

I asked already some questions here. I am an international student from Europe in Korea and made. I made a Japanese friend. We got really close in the summer break. And he also gave me the feeling that he feels close to me ( as friends of course ) he also keeps telling me that. But since a few weeks then when we text he never responds and takes a lot of time and he never asked me to hang out. I talked to him about it and explained this makes me feel really bad because in the past I also had friends who only were my friends just out of convenience. He explained and said he is just a bad Texter but he didn’t rely answer the question why he never asked me to hang out. At this point it feels really one sided. But then he tells me how much he enjoyed hanging out with me so I thought it’s just his personality and how he acts. But I keep seeing and hearing from other people that he always responds them directly or on is the am always responds to them quick and asks them to hang out. He likes exchange students too he keeps hanging out with them and never asks me. Then also a small thing but I noticed that. When I posted a story of our activity when we hang out ( he was not even in the picture) and he never likes it or reposts it but when other people do that he just got to know he always likes it and reposts it. Or he always comments on the posts of my friends how cool they are but when I post something nothing even tho he doesn’t really now then well and my friends also confirmed that they never hang out or text. So I actually feel kind of used because for me he got a really close friend but now I just feel like a dog he pays attention to when he feels like it and just like a English practice object but I don’t k is what to say anymore because is aid it so many times. Like that cannot be something cultural right ????

POLITICS Death Penalty in Japan

I just found out that almost 90% of Japanese people under the age of 30 are in favor of the Death Penalty.

That is incredibly interesting (imo) because in the rest of the world, Death Penalties are more unpopular with young People, and more common with the older Generations.

So here my question:

What are your main Arguments for it? Is it diffrent then pure Revenge?

What would your reaction be if someone killed by the System wrongfully?

I know it is a hot topic, but i would love to discuss it calmly, since i am genuienly curious, additionally I belive everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even in these kind of topics.

(I wanted to put sources here, but since the numbers are so unambiguous, there are like 1000x of them)

CULTURE Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks dominance

I’m Canadian and have lived in Fukuoka for the past 15 years. In that time, following the SoftBank Hawks has almost become an annual tradition of watching them contend for, or win, the Japan Series. Even in their less successful years, they’ve generally remained competitive and in the postseason picture.

Living in Japan has gradually turned me from an ice hockey fan into a baseball fan (though I still follow the NHL).

Obviously, financial resources play a role, but the Giants and Tigers also have significant spending power. So what really explains the Hawks’ sustained success? Is it superior player development and drafting, scouting, attracting free agents, front-office stability, or some combination of these factors?

I’d be interested to hear from Japanese baseball fans: what, in your view, does SoftBank do particularly well that other NPB teams struggle to replicate on such a consistent level?

CULTURE Is My Japanese Wife Being Reasonable With Her Request?

We live in the U.S., I am Japanese-American with Japanese parents, I can speak Japanese but I don’t believe I am Japanese as I am only ingrained in the nuance and culture that my parents taught me and I am very influenced by Asian American culture so I prefer to live like an American. My wife is a Japanese national and we have two kids. We had our children obtain dual citizenship shortly after they were born.

My wife insists that I am more Japanese than American because it’s “in my blood”and she wants us to raise our kids as “full Japanese” (Speaking Japanese only at home, only cooking Japanese dishes, chores, etiquette, media, and annual travel to her home city to visit their grandparents) so that they can be prepared as adults should they ever decide that they want to live in Japan and denounce their U.S. citizenship when they are of age.

I think it’s somewhat pointless and absurd to completely ignore their American side at home as they are also American and should embrace their American culture at home and not just when they’re outside; my wife even likes American culture as well and enjoys her American professional and social life, but she tells me that since they are holding dual citizenship we have a “duty” to also raise them as Japanese so that they are able to make a more conscious choice when having to eventually declare U.S. or Japanese nationality to Japan.

Not exactly sure if committing ourselves to this household rule for the next 10+ years is reasonable

EDIT: After hearing everyone’s opinion I now believe it’s a commitment and self-sacrifice we do have to make since we chose to have them obtain their dual citizenships when they were born, thank you all

Some further discussion with my wife, she decided to be more lenient on the American culture ban, and we compromise with:

-Japanese only at home, English outside
-Japanese etiquette and chores
-All media is fine but it has to be in Japanese audio
-They are allowed to consume American culture and media on Fridays and Saturdays
-Once they are teenagers and have their own computers they can consume anything they’d like but we will still expect them to follow the house rules outside of their room/private space

For clarity on the post:

Our children already speak both English and Japanese, we do a mixture at home.

Our children will have to make a decision when they are 22 to be U.S. nationality or Japanese nationality, because of this my wife wants them to have an understanding of both cultures before making a decision and does not want them to make a choice out of comfort or boredom.

Wife believes that if we don’t make the home exclusively Japanese and have Japanese mannerisms, etiquette, lifestyle, etc at home they won’t be prepared to make an actual conscious decision

MISC For Japanese students who moved to the US (or any country in that matter), what was the hardest part of adjusting to school?

Hi!! I'm a Japanese-American high schooler and I've attended Japanese Weekend School since I was four. And so over the years, I've met many students who moved from Japan to the US because of their parents' jobs. Some of my friends told me that adjusting to this new environment and American schools, especially when they had to learn new material in English, was really hard.

Since I've been born and raised in the US, I haven't really experiences the difficulty of learning in a completely different language or school system.

For those who have experienced this transition, what was the hardest part of learning in an American school? Was it understanding the English, adjusting to a different curriculum, keeping up with classes, or something else entirely?

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences :D

(P.S. Hearing these stories is actually what inspired me to start working on Samurai Learner, where I *attempt* to teach English through math. I'm hoping to make the transition a little easier for students going through what my friends experienced, but I realize I haven't experienced it myself. I'd love to learn from people who have!)

LANGUAGE How do chill japanese people talk?

I'm making a comic, one of the characters is a Japanese man, I wanted to know how natives in Japan talk, he's a pretty laid back guy and I don't know if people like that have mannerisms like how the do in the US (ex: Hey dude, my brotha, chill out, ect)

In summary: do chill people in Japan talk differently or do they talk in the same manner as normal people?

CULTURE Are Japanese really offended when foreigners say Japan is so cheap these days?

• Upvotes

There is a Thread post from Taiwanese people that Japanese people seem to get offended we(Taiwanese)/ foreigners say "Japan is so cheap these days".

"This is cheap in Japan. That is cheap in Japan. everything is so cheap so we love to go to Japan...etc" sounds disgraceful to Japanese people?

Someone explained that many Japanese people used to have a pride of Japan, especially Tokyo, being one of the most expensive cities because it showed the strength of Japanese economy.

But, I want to hear the Japanese perspective.

Is this really rude comment to Japanese people?

CULTURE Should Japanese barber’s sterilize electric razor blades between customers?

• Upvotes

It appears to be a law, but I am sure none of the barber’s I have visited are doing it because you can often see cut hair from previous clients on the razor while it is sitting there in the shelf.

How do you, as a Japanese man, feel about a barber using an unsterilized electric razor blade on you?

I am not sure if I am just being overly paranoid as my home country is extremely strict on this.

Proportional representation would be more inclusive and representative of public opinion, while the current system provides stable governance. What do you guys think?

CULTURE How to deal with snacks at bars

Sorry for the dumb question. Currently visiting Japan, i’d love to visit more bars but I’m intimidated by the snacks. I’m vegan and i hate wasting food, so i’m not sure what to do when they bring the “mandatory” snack, is it okay to send it back and order something from the menu? I know that they usually bring it and add it to the tab, i have no issues with ordering a light snack with my drink if that’s needed, i just don’t want food to be wasted. Any recommendations on how to deal with this? So far i’ve bern avoiding bars most of the time but in rural areas there isn’t much else to do and drinking in hotel rooms is depressing. I don’t want to offend the bar owners either. Any suggestion is appreciated.

CULTURE Is there a name for this style of hat?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've seen this same sort of hat shape before, so I'm assuming it's not a one off or unique/handmade item. I've also been watching the show JIN-仁- on Netflix, and it reminds me of what the lead firemen wear. With the squared top resembling cat ears, and then the two strips resembling rabbit like lop ears.

(As far as I'm able to understand, there wasn't one singular uniform for all firemen at that time. But the headwear in the show seems at least inspired by what some wore. Tried to get a pic but Netflix hates screenshots)

I have no idea if there's any historical correlation or name for this style (like how different constructions of beanies have different names), but if anyone knows, or could tell me what they would type into Google to find similar shaped ones, that'd be much appreciated :)

CULTURE Japanese users: where have you actually made lasting online friends from abroad?

Hey! I'm from Germany and would love to get to know people living in Japan, hear about their everyday lives, and share a bit of life here too. Things like what a normal weekend looks like, hobbies, food, work, or whatever we happen to have in common. Practising languages together would be a nice part of it as well.

I'd really appreciate the Japanese side of this: if you've made friends from abroad online, which app or community did you actually use, and did those conversations last? I've come across HelloTalk and Tandem, but I'm curious how they feel from your side, rather than just reading another list of apps aimed at foreigners.

Would you choose a language-exchange app, or is joining a shared-interest community on something like X or Discord a more natural way to meet people? I'm interested in somewhere Japanese people are genuinely active and open to chatting with someone overseas.

Also, what makes a first message feel friendly and worth replying to? I'd like it to be a mutual exchange, without making someone feel like they're being treated as a free teacher. Thanks!

HISTORY Recent studies show that modern Japanese inherit 70% of their genes from relatively recent migrations of Chinese-like populations. How would the average Japanese person view this discovery?

A couple of years back, studies showed that over 70% of modern Japanese ancestry owes it origins to relatively recent migrations (300-700 CE) of individuals similar to modern Han Chinese, during the Kofun era and the "emergence of the Japanese imperial state" . This is a pretty big shift in prior theories about the two part origins of Japanese from Jomon and Yayoi populations.

Are these discoveries known to the average person? Is there a political impact to such news? What do you all think of this information?

HISTORY Rei Akasaka , where is she now?

Post image
19 Upvotes

Does anyone know what happened to Japanese actress Rei Akasaka after 1986?

I'm trying to find reliable information about Rei Akasaka (赤坂麗), the Japanese actress who appeared in films during the 1980s.

Her film career seems to have ended around 1986, but I haven't been able to find much reliable information about what happened afterward.

Does anyone know whether she continued working in another field, gave any interviews after retiring, or whether there are Japanese sources documenting her later life?

I'm mainly looking for reliable sources rather than speculation.

Sonic The Hedgehog / Sans (From Undertale).

Some questions I'm wondering:

  • How popular are they?
  • Which one is more popular?
  • Which one are you more likely to see merch of?
  • Which one are you more likely to hear talked about?
  • What do people think about when seeing them?
  • What would people call them (Gross/Cute/Handsome/Etc)?

CULTURE What remains of the bōsōzoku in Japan today?

A couple of years ago, I was into anime about school fights, yankii (delinquents), and *bosozoku* (biker gangs)—retro stuff like Shonan Bakusozoku or GTO. For those living in Japan: what’s left of these street-delinquent subcultures? Have they just turned into peaceful pensioners, or has something new emerged to take their place?

LIFESTYLE Need Insight for a Novel I'm Writing

I plan on writing a fictional novel about a girl who sleeps chronically often. Of course there's much more to it than that but I don't want to spoil the whole story, however it is aimed to be a psychological thriller.

Because of some ideas I had with her name and lifestyle I wanted the story to take place in Japan so I preferably want to speak with a woman from there to help fact check, offer advice, explain common traditions and interactions she may have with other characters and general insight on how her daily life may be. I know some things about Japanese culture and language but I want everything to be accurate and relatable.

If you're interested feel free to send me a DM and I'll share more details about the book, though if that unsettles you feel free to comment on my post instead for any advice you'd like to share. Anyone is also free to ask questions, just know that I prefer to keep some details about the story private for now. If English is too difficult I can also try to use Japanese instead through text, though admittedly I'm not great at it. Regardless thank you to anyone who reads or considers this and I hope everyone is doing well :)
