Ban on Trump related posts

In light of his recent remarks, we're banning all Trump posts for the time being. We get it, the man inspires...strong opinions. We'd like to remind folks that while political discussions aren't explicitly banned here, this sub does not cater to politics. There is no shortage of subs to have those discussions and we encourage you to take your questions and comments about Trump and today's political climate to those subs. Here are a few:

A note from mods

Hi all,

With a recent influx of posts since the inauguration, I see I need to remind people to please not feed the trolls. Many posts and comments are being made lately that can incite anger and emotion, but if you comment back in the same way, you risk a ban as well as the person who started things.

Continue to report issues to the mods and we will address them.

Thanks.

Calling all USA type people

Hi I’m from the uk, looking for high protein snacks and I’d like to add beef jerky to the list. The issue is it’s not popular, like at all In the uk. Could you guys give me some good recommendations. I’d probably have to get it from Amazon so it would be great if you could give me your top 3 or 4 so there’s more chance I can buy it in the uk.
Thanks in advance

Culture & History Who are some of the most famous people from Japan that many people would know?

I'm planning a small discussion with my Japanese students about who they think the most famous Japanese people are, and who they think Americans will think of, but I've yet to find many good official surveys, so here we are! Who comes to mind when you think of famous Japanese people, be it historical or present? The more names the better!
If there are enough responses, I can throw the data together and have a fun talk with the kids!

For example, obviously first thought for me is Ohtani Shohei, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Hideo Kojima, but obviously we’ve got Abe, Hirohito, and others, as well. Doesn't need to be scientific, just who are some names that come to mind when you think of Japanese citizens!

Foreign Poster Help me understand the financial side of bachelor/bachelorette parties

I'm a foreigner who moved to the US not so long ago. Recently I got to attend a bachelorette party and I was quite shocked by the financial side of it. So from what I was told, the maid of honor (the bride's sister) and 2 bridesmaids paid for the entire party at a club reserved for the night, bride's hotel room for a few nights, and dinner for 20+ people at some fancy restaurant. This was all happening in a big and very expensive city. It cost me around 1k just to attend it. For the wedding, they all had to get the same dresses and pay for it as well, plus they covered a hotel room for the bride to get ready in. The sister was unemployed at the time, so it was communicated that they are keeping it light. I was also told that some bridesmaids are even expected to pay for flights if the bachelorette party is happening outside the country.

Then I also attended a baby shower, and that seemed to be quite expensive too with all customized decorations, fancy venue, and fancy food from some famous chef in the city. The couple's friends organized it for them. I assume the rule applies to the bachelor's parties too.

Having seen all that, I'm really curious, why are bridesmaids/friends expected to pay for all that? And how would/do you feel when someone asks you to be a maid of honor or a bridesmaid, assuming that a big financial expense will be coming with it? As a cost-conscious European, I would freak out and panic if someone asked me to spend thousands on them just because they are getting married. Curious to hear your thoughts on it.

Sports Ads on NFL matches

Hi all,

My husband and I (UK) have been watching the football and noticed the amount of political ads there are. Are they usually a frequent thing, and are they always really aggressive? It might be because UK politics is more of little remarks, but the American politics ads seem to be cutthroat!

How good/bad is my work schedule compareed to an US blue colar worker?

4 day morning shift 1 day break, 4 day afternoon shift 1 day break 4 day night shift 2 day brak than it starts again. Monday to sunday.

Workhours is 8 hour maximum, containing a 20 minute break officialy, but actualy we spend like 30-40 minute.

Im an storekeeper, having reach truck forklift certified. But it contain a lot of heavy lifting by hand.

My salary is roughly double or even higher compare to working in a retail store with forklift certification.

Why americans care so much about Israel-Palestine conflict?

There are a gazillion different regional conflicts across the globe - India-Pakistan, Armenia-Azerbaijan, Ethiopia-Eriteria, Rwanda-Congo etc. Most americans wouldn't know or care about any of those. The rationale is simple, these conflicts are on the other side of the globe, amongst people very different from Americans also largely don't affect america in any way. So the average american has no reason to care

But all the same applies to Israel-Palestine conflict as well yet americans are always so worked up about it. Why is that so?

How often do you actually encounter "assholes" in your daily life?

A lot of videos come across my feed, and it feels like there's always something going on in America. Asshole drivers, Karens, and just people going out of their way to confront you.

I know the algorithm heavily exaggerates things. Plus, where I’m from, keeping peace and avoiding conflict is a big deal, so seeing people scream and beat each other up in public is rare.

For the average American, how many genuine assholes do you actually run into in a year? Do you see this crazy stuff happen in person, or is it mostly just an online thing?

Culture & History Help me understand Thanksgiving

Hi Americans,

I’m a Brit who has been invited to my first Thanksgiving meal by an American friend.

I want to understand the traditions, history and customs behind the holiday.

The internet is overwhelming me with contradicting info.

Can you teach me about it like a school child please?

1) What state do you live in? 2) What’s the best three things about it? 3) if you had to move somewhere else in the US, where would you go?

As a Brit, the difference in state geography always interested me!

What's something you miss about America in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s?

I've been thinking about how our priorities change as we get older. Things that didn't seem important years ago can mean so much more now.

For me, it's the simple things: peaceful mornings, good conversations, and having the freedom to enjoy life at my own pace.

I'm curious what others think. What's something you've come to appreciate more with age?

Suggest. How do you pronounce this?

Also, let us know what part of the US you are from

Edit: Thank you all. There is no right or wrong but I am always fascinated by regional differences and commonalities
