Launching BestIn, a website inspired by this sub

Running this sub has been a good reminder of how much people know about this city. Locals ask each other where to go, and visitors get recommendations they wouldn’t easily find on a typical travel site.

The only downside is that once a thread drops off the front page, those recommendations can be hard to find again.

That’s what inspired me to build BestIn. The idea is to take those conversations and make the recommendations easier to find, with a place for people to share their favourites, vote on answers and discover the best of any city, with no ads or paid rankings. I based the starting data on threads from here, so Dublin’s the most built-out so far.

I’ve just launched it, and I’d love for you to have a look and add a few of your own picks. If you’d like another town or city added, you can request one on the site. It’s very much a work in progress, so honest feedback is welcome.

This sub isn’t going anywhere, and thanks for making it such a useful community in the first place!

Dublin isn't just for the weekend. Here's what's on Mon–Thu: quizzes, gigs, comedy, trad & more.

Most "what's on" lists for Dublin stop at the weekend, so here's one for Monday to Thursday.

I'm building a free events app for Dublin, and this week I added over 120 regular pub nights to it: quizzes, trad sessions, comedy nights, open mics. A lot of them never make it onto the usual listings, so I've mixed a few in with the bigger stuff. Bank holiday Monday plus Halloween week, so there's plenty on.

MONDAY 26 (BANK HOLIDAY)

- Mary's Monday Quiz · Mary's Bar & Hardware · 7pm · €5 per table of four. That's €1.25 each. Hard to beat for a Monday.

- Salsa & Bachata Social · Wigwam · 5pm · from €17.07. A good way to shake off the long weekend.

- Macklemore & Friends · 3Arena · 6:30pm · from €88.74.

- Stitch · Smock Alley · 7pm · €20 · 18+. Last night of this Frankenstein-inspired horror show. If you missed it over the weekend, this is your chance.

TUESDAY 27

- Halloween Quiz · Drop Dead Twice · 7pm · €10.09. Going solo? They'll put you on a team.

- Dúchas · IMMA · 6pm · free. Book launch and talk on Irish identity and ecology.

- Animals · Abbey Theatre · 7:30pm · from €15. Blindboy's short stories on the national stage. One of them is a man and his fridge-freezer on the road to Limerick.

WEDNESDAY 28

- Slatts Quiz · Slattery's, D4 · 8pm · free. A free pub quiz midweek, no catch.

- Tim Burton Quiz · Token · 7pm · €5.66. Halloween-week theme in the arcade bar.

- Gianmarco Soresi · 3Olympia · 5:30pm & 9pm · from €41.30. If you've seen his crowd-work clips, you know the front rows aren't safe.

THURSDAY 29

- Trad session · The Cobblestone, Smithfield · from 4:30pm. The classic for a reason. Go early if you want a seat.

- Battle of the Buskers · Buskers Bar, Temple Bar · 7pm · free. Street performers go head to head and the crowd picks the winner.

- Beyond the Visible: Hilma af Klint · National Gallery · 5:15pm · free. Documentary screening, and it's also the Gallery's Thursday Late for the Hilma af Klint exhibition, so you can make a night of it.

- LEVI.SCT · National Concert Hall · 8pm · from €15. Classical piano mixed with hip-hop and house. Not your usual NCH night.

Any weeknight regulars I'm missing? Especially quizzes and trad sessions, I'm trying to get them all in.

P.S. There's a lot more on this week, including all pub nights. It's all in the app (Scenia) and it's free, write me and I can send you the link

(late night)/ study spots in city centre?

Hi everyone, I’m just wondering where some of the best places to study in Dublin City Centre bonus points if it opens late (until 8-9pm).

Somewhere ideally that has moderate to low noise levels, nice tables & chairs, sockets and not really a food court situation where it smells like hot dinners.

I work late in town and I can’t hang around in my job to catch up on work. By the time I get home from work the commute has exhausted me and I can’t even bring myself to study or catch up on some assignments. So I rather would do it right after work when my mind is still fresh..

Alternatively how do you manage studying when you’re really tired?

I like studying in cafes on my day off sometimes it gives me something to do😊.

Looking forward to your responses..

Solo trip to Dublin

Hello all

I’m visiting Dublin for a few days this week, coming on Wednesday morning and leaving Saturday afternoon. Apart from a gig on Friday night not much planned so was wondering if any had recommendations for local spots like pubs, restaurants a little less touristy and good for meeting locals ?

Also if anyone knows of any events on during the Wednesday to Friday to hit up - gigs, stand up nights, live events etc that sorta thing ?

25F looking for girls in Dublin who love techno and raves!

Hey everyone!

I’m 25F, living in Dublin and looking to make some new female friends who are into techno, raves and electronic music.

I’d really love to find a group of girls who enjoy going to events regularly, discovering new DJs and just having a good time together.

Most of my friends aren’t really into the rave scene, so I’d love to meet some like-minded girls and hopefully build some genuine friendships along the way.

If anyone’s in the same boat, knows of any girls’ WhatsApp or Telegram groups, or would be interested in getting a little rave group together, let me know!

Would love to hear from you! :)

I'm organising a 6-a-side football game this weekend (Dublin)

Hey everyone! Organising a 6v6 football game with a few mates in Dublin this weekend. We need a few more players.

Likely Friday evening or Sunday morning, but flexible to suit the majority. I'll sort the pitch, teams and ball. We settle later things by cash or Revolut.

Reply or message me if you're interested!

Dublin Hen

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m organising a hen party weekend (Saturday AM to Sunday afternoon) in Dublin in July (2027). We are all flying over from the UK so it’s a one night wonder.

Ages of the group range from 27-59 and will be around 12/13 women. The hen doesn’t want to do anything too stereotypical ie Guinness Storehouse or bar crawl around Temple Bar or anything too hen do/tacky. I’ve been to Dublin about 15-20 times over the last 10 years so have a decent idea of the obvious places to go but appreciate I’m not a local!

Does anyone have any good suggestions for how to keep a group of this size and age range entertained. Everyone likes a drink but would like to have something activity wise to structure the day rather than just a complete day of drinking.

Thank you!

TLDR: ideas for a non ‘stereotypical’ activities for a hen party in Dublin.

Best small locally made gifts: art, crafts, tchotchkes, etc.

Hi all! First of all, thank you for this fantastic sub – I have written down a bunch of recommendations from browsing other threads, especially for food :)

I am visiting Dublin soon, and have people back home I'd like to get gifts for. I'm looking for little arts or crafts that are not super expensive, not super kitschy, and small enough to be packed in my suitcase. Any suggestions for where I might look?

Thank you so much in advance!
