What is CANZUK?
CANZUK is a proposal for facilitated migration, free trade and defence and foreign policy coordination between Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Why just those four countries?
Because CANZUK's goals include both facilitated migration and geopolitical coordination, the number of viable candidates for membership is severely limited. For facilitated migration to be balanced, members must share similar levels of wealth, employment and economic stability. Similarly, for defence and foreign policy cooperation to be effective, members must be aligned on most major geopolitical issues. This criteria unfortunately means that are currently no other suitable candidates for inclusion, although this can certainly change in the future provided there is a unanimous desire to expand.
What do people think of this idea?
Polling commissioned in 2018 by Canzuk International (the foremost CANZUK advocacy organisation) showed overwhelming support for CANZUK free movement in all four countries.
Don't we already cooperate on defence and foreign policy?
Indeed we do, and this collaboration has only increased in recent years as new challenges and crises have emerged that affect all four countries. However, formalising this longstanding partnership into a legitimate geopolitical bloc means that our actions would carry more weight and we would be better equipped to respond to common threats.
What if the countries disagree on an issue?
The defence and foreign policy aspect of CANZUK is entirely voluntary as each country is completely sovereign. It would simply be a case of collaborating on issues where we are in agreement. On the rare issue where we have differing views, we would go our own way as we always have.
What is facilitated migration?
Facilitated migration refers to the streamlining immigration of processes and the removal of barriers to make it easier for citizens to move, work and study abroad. Facilitated migration covers everything from simple visas to complete free movement like that which exists between Australia and New Zealand. In any case, each country will have complete authority over who they let in and what resources they can access.
What does CANZUK offer me?
On an individual level, the ability to effortlessly move to another country is something that hundreds of thousands of Aussies and Kiwis have enjoyed for decades. Expanding this to include Canada and the UK means that citizens of all four countries will have the chance to change their surroundings, explore different cultures, progress their careers and pursue opportunities that are not otherwise available to them.
How would this affect our existing trade agreements and relationships?
Existing trade agreements and relationships will not be affected. Whilst CANZUK trade might receive a small boost, this will be negligible compared to our primary trading relationships in our respective regions which will continue to be our main economic focus.
Why are all the countries predominantly white?
As explained above, the countries were chosen for their similar economic standing and aligned foreign policy agenda. All four countries pride themselves on their multiculturalism and depend on high levels of immigration from Asia and elsewhere. This will continue to be the case.
Isn't this just the British Empire 2.0?
Absolutely not. Whilst we share a similar colonial history, it is not the past that binds us today. CANZUK's governing principle is four equal partners with an equal say. Member states will cede no power and retain complete control over their policies and affairs.
Is this the UK's replacement for the EU after Brexit?
No. CANZUK predates Brexit and is an entirely separate endeavour. Had it elected to remain, the UK could have been in both the EU and CANZUK as the two are not incompatible.
Is CANZUK a union?
No. It is sometimes mistakenly called a union by commentators but this is incorrect as there are absolutely no plans for political or economic integration, a shared currency or a federation. Put simply, CANZUK proposes nothing more ambitious than the relationship between Australia and New Zealand and that can hardly be characterised as a union.
What if a CANZUK country becomes a republic?
The monarchy vs republic debate is completely unrelated to CANZUK and is a matter for the individual countries to decide for themselves. If one, multiple or all countries become republics, it will have absolutely no effect on CANZUK.
How can I help make CANZUK a reality?

I'm a huge CANZUK supporter though I stopped caring much about the movement for a while but now I'm re-interested. I want to know what you think are the biggest issues with CANZUK. I don't mean the CANZUK movement (like how we sometimes get stereotyped as neo-imperialists) but the idea of CANZUK itself. I think the biggest problem is the fact that the nations of CANZUK trade more with outside superpowers like the PRC and USA and EU than with each other. What do you guys think about any obstacles to CANZUK?

In case of paywall:
Britain has decided not to join a global defence bank spearheaded by Canada, as chancellor John Healey prepares to throw his weight behind a separate UK-led initiative to help fill a multibillion hole in the UK defence budget. Andy Burnham, UK prime minister, discussed Britain joining the Ottawa initiative with Mark Carney, his Canadian counterpart, last month after officials began exploring the proposal, as first reported by the FT. But on Sunday it was announced that the plan would not go ahead, a move which will be seen in some quarters as a snub to Carney and his attempt to forge closer ties among the world’s “middle powers”. British officials insisted the “historic relationship” with Canada remained strong and the decision not to press ahead with a merger of the two initiatives was a mutual one. London and Ottawa could not agree on the way a merger of the two initiatives would work, UK officials briefed on the talks said. Britain also resisted the idea of the so-called Defence, Security and Resilience Bank having dual headquarters in Canada and Europe. Instead, Healey is expected to use his Budget on Wednesday to announce support for the separate Multilateral Defence Mechanism, a financing initiative originally driven by former UK chancellor Rachel Reeves. The UK has committed an initial £400mn to the MDM. The Netherlands, Poland and Finland have also signed up to the initiative. The Europeans and Canadians had looked at the idea of linking the two schemes. The MDM is intended to bolster procurement and stockpiling. Reeves insisted it would allow Britain to achieve “better value for money for taxpayers” while “crucially enabling us to borrow at a low rate to fund defence”.
Increasing defence spending is a key priority for Healey both in the short term and over the next decade. The chancellor has said he will fully fund the UK’s defence investment programme, which was left with a £4.7bn hole earlier in the year after Reeves failed to provide upfront financing for the equipment plan. Healey was defence secretary at the time and quit in June following a row with Reeves, including over her refusal to commit funds to increase UK defence spending to 3 per cent of GDP by 2030, something which Healey said was essential. The chancellor has indicated that the extra funding will not be allocated until a spending review next year but is expected to give strong indications in his Budget that he will find the money needed to help keep Britain safe. The Canadian-led DSRB, a lending institution modelled on the World Bank, has promised to provide “long-term, low-cost financing” for defence initiatives. The bank aims to facilitate cash for Canada and European countries as they seek to fulfil their pledge to spend an estimated €850bn extra a year on defence across Nato. Officials briefed on the talks said there was resistance from European members about the idea of a joint HQ for the proposed merged MDM/DSRB, with the majority of members being European. The two schemes were also unable to agree on an approach to procurement. The MDM countries wanted to focus on joint procurement, which was not a big part of the DSRB. There were also disagreements over rules to determine which new members could join in future. A British government insider said: “There’s a lot of good co-operation that can be done — Canada just has different priorities to us. They are focused on single sovereign lending to smaller countries and want to protect an HQ in Ottawa — while MDM countries want joint procurement to be the main focus of an international organisation with a AAA credit rating to support Nato targets.” A European defence figure was critical of the UK government’s decision to retreat from the DSRB, however: “The UK has chosen a model that makes defence financing conditional on joint procurement, striking at the heart of national sovereignty.” A joint statement from the UK and Canadian finance ministries said: “We have agreed to develop a framework of co-operation that works in the interest of both institutions, having mutually concluded that it is best to develop two distinct but complementary institutions that work in partnership.” The UK government’s ambitions to boost defence could be helped by Healey’s decision to inject more capital into its National Wealth Fund and British Business Bank — two publicly owned investment bodies. The FT revealed on Friday that the Treasury is planning to grant an extra £20bn to the two institutions over a half-decade period. The government told the NWF last year to boost its involvement in defence technologies as part of its mandate.

What would the relationship between CANZUK and the US/EU/BRICS look like. As well as that, what about the military aspect (which I am sort of more interested in than the economic aspect), what would CANZUK's relationship with NATO be like?

On 12 October, Liberal Democrat MP Luke Taylor asked Prime Minister Andy Burnham in Parliament about strengthening integration between the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and whether he would meet the newly established CANZUK All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG).
Burnham agreed in principle to meet the group, although he didn’t specify when, and added:
“I think there is huge importance in the English-speaking world uniting in this moment, working together and navigating a difficult climate, but also in forging new partnerships to do so.”
Some background on the CANZUK APPG:
The group was re-established on 24 June 2026, with 21 MPs and members of the House of Lords attending its inaugural meeting.
Its four parliamentary officers are:
Labour (2): Adam Jogee (Chair) and Henry Tufnell (Vice-Chair)
Conservative (1): Jack Rankin (Vice-Chair)
Ulster Unionist Party (1): Robin Swann (Vice-Chair)
These are the confirmed officers rather than the group’s entire membership. A full party-by-party membership breakdown has not been published.
The APPG aims to deepen cooperation between the four countries on trade, economic relations, migration and security.
Burnham’s comments are not an explicit endorsement of CANZUK or freedom of movement, but his willingness to engage with the APPG and his comments about greater unity among English-speaking countries are noteworthy.

Just want to ask what people thin of a merger between these 4 countries:
I am personally pro CANZUK as one country, however it would be like 4 federal governments for each region and one national government for defense, currecy, international relations etc
the reasons are that we would get simpler travel between the countries, a stronger military, more global control so the annoying americans can't push us around as easily, more national pride due to our country for lack of a better term being way cooler, trade barriers would be gone so all 4 of us would be richer, and just generally a nicer country with similar culture and the same language too.
I am curious to hear other peoples thoughts and especially why it shouldnt happen according to people.

How about a specifically CANZUK sports tournament?
This is only the germ of an idea, but there is a lot of interest in sport in all the CANZUK countries and it is part of our educational systems (I still follow Rugby and Cricket, for example, because I played them at school). Surely we can build on our existing sporting links to promote the idea of co-operation in other areas?
Also, it might be enjoyable for us to promote each other’s national sports - more Rugby and Cricket in Canada and more Field Hockey and Aus. Rules Football in the UK, for instance?
Any thoughts on this general theme welcome.
