Questions What does it feel like in the first few minutes after two people confess their love to each other?

• Upvotes

I've always wondered what the first few minutes after a love confession feel like, when two people realise their feelings are mutual.

Does everything suddenly feel different? The silence, the eye contact, the smiles?

And that night, when both lie in bed replaying the same moment in their minds…

For those who have experienced it, what did those first few minutes feel like? ❤️

Ordered a mandoline, anyone got any good uses for it?

• Upvotes

I am very much looking forward to hopefully not end up in the ER.

I mostly got it for cucumber salads, creek and Italian salads with shaved carrots, and a few baked potato dishes.

I know people use them for fruit based baking, but not really into sweets like that.

Always been afraid of them and put off buying one, but the one I got.has a pretty good guard to it.

Last weekend I was at my best friends house and his youngest daughter got me into chess again.

• Upvotes

I was never into it. I have a semi decent board as I play board games with friends and figured some who loves games should have one.

I've always been into Go, but no one to play with. Got a paid membership on chess.com and have been doing lessons and problems the last few days.

Kinda excited to play his kids with my board, and I think thats where the excitement ends. I still dont really like chess and believe Go is a far better game. But odds are I'll never get to use that fancy board.

Anyone here play chess or Go?

Just Chatting Finally started being active after years of lurking, any tips?

• Upvotes

Been lurking for around 2 years without ever posting anything, just scrolling. Finally decided to actually be active and talk to people here. It feels a bit weird to post for the first time but also exciting.

For those who have been here a while, how did you get comfortable posting? And how do you find good conversations? Would love to hear your experience.

Does anyone else feel like we’re all just winging adulthood?

Can we talk about how nobody really knows what they’re doing in adulthood? 😭
Some people are figuring out money. Some are figuring out relationships. Some are just trying to keep their lives together while pretending they have everything under control.
And somehow, we’re all just expected to know what we’re doing.

Just Chatting What is you most hated chore?

I don’t mind many chores. But I really dislike unloading the dishwasher. I will load it happily. I borderline enjoy the hand wash dishes…. But unloading the dishwasher is the worst!!

I think everyone should be exempt from having to do their top most hated task and other family members should bear their burden. But alas, here I am day after day unloading the dreaded dishwasher.

Just Chatting Why is “Drink the Kool Aid” so casually used in American culture?

Watching Monday Night Football on ESPN right now and one of the pre-game hosts used “drinking the kool aid” to describe a team. IMO I think it’s a great expression when used correctly, but this is not the first time I’ve heard it used on a national broadcast, and I guess I’m just confused why American media has decided that an expression based on a mass murder-suicide can be thrown around in front of any audience without triggering any censorship rules

Let's say you've just woke up from a 10 years coma

Do with me this exercise, imagine you've just woke up from a 10 years coma (at your age now).

How would life look for you especially since for yourself you didn't feel 10 years has gone by, it was like you were alive and then time fast forwarded in a seemingly blink of an eye 10 years ahead, and here you are at a hospital bed surrounded by either someone dearest who happened to visit that day, or perhaps by none except a nurse who noticed you opened your eyes and came for a checkup, and came unfortunately to relay the truth of your predicament.

Now, at your age, 10 years have gone. And so, how would you proceed?

Would your mental state worsen, or would you accept what time has changed and rebuild your life?

Why does everything feel so strange in Arkansas?

Why did the Waffle House employees say the water makes people get rashes and sick after they drink it after we said it tasted funny? It all feels like a sundown town, we are traveling through and it is just weird. Is all of Arkansas like this?

It got me thinking about how special unexpected gifts can be. I've always loved the idea of surprising someone with something meaningful, like a beautiful watch.

What's the most thoughtful gift you've ever given or received

Just Chatting Friend just randomly unfollowed me on instagram

not the biggest deal but a friend that I made a few years ago when I lived in a different city just randomly unfollowed me and removed me as a follower too. I don’t have that many friends on Instagram so it was easy to spot who it was but I am genuinely confused by this. she liked all my pictures and stories and i did hers and there was no falling out or drama. I just moved away 2 years ago so we stopped being close...

maybe I am thinking too much into this but I can’t help but feel a little hurt!

Thoughts & Ideas Jack Skellington is canonically from Kentucky, or at least died there.

Jack Skellington is the protagonist from Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas, an immortal skeleton and the "patron spirit of Halloween" (according to several wikis). Skeletons are decomposed human cadavers. While in many fantasy, fiction, and folklore stories, creatures of any kind can be extant on their own accord, or even magically conjured into existence, skeletons, like ghosts, are virtually always implied to be tied to prior living humans (or the corresponding animal type that matches their skeletal structure or ghostly ethereal spirit).

Jack's purpose in Halloween Town is to oversee Halloween: to scare people on that holiday in good fun. Like other mythical creatures, he isn't going to be personally known in any real place on Earth. Even if he personally goes out to scare people, it's unlikely he would gain renown that way; he isn't haunting a location, he's doing scares (i.e. "jumpscares") to observe a specific holiday.

So what does all this mean?

Jack tells us in Jack's Lament that "to a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mr. Unlucky, and I'm known throughout England and France."

This is a peek into Jack's human existence. Jack's Lament is a deeply personal song which gives the audience insight into Jack's persona, mood, prowess as a frightening spirit, but also his personality, his preferences, his vulnerabilities.

And so he's literally sharing with the audience an insight into where he died. "To a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mr Unlucky–" why would a skeleton be "Mr. Unlucky?" The most obvious answer would be because it died. Jack Skellington died in Kentucky; or, if you would like to be very specific, the human who died and transformed into Jack died in Kentucky.

Now you might say "well he could have just been traveling through or visiting Kentucky when he died." And that's true. But Kentucky is not an especially populous state nor does it have any major ports, being landlocked. And so if Jack was indeed "known throughout England and France" is it more likely he was a relatively successful famous socialite or celebrity from Kentucky who frequently visited western Europe, or a famous person from somewhere else who was visiting Kentucky and encounted some ill fate?

Kentucky being home to lots of Scots-Irish settlers and having limestone caverns, indigenous sites, and Appalachian mountains with coal deposits means Kentucky has a fairly rich amount of folklore. And much of that Scots-Irish folklore includes the precursor to modern Halloween: Samhain. And what better character to join that folklore than the patron spirit of Halloween himself, Jack Skellington?

Edit: So another angle about the narrative significance of the line "to a guy in Kentucky I'm Mr Unlucky" in the context of Jack's Lament:

The song has a pattern of building up Jack's victories and strengths and confident claims about who he is, then contrasting it with his own self-doubt, restlessness, and existential boredom.

"With the wave of my hand, and a well-placed moan I have swept the very bravest off their feet. But year after year, It's the same routine And I grow so weary of the sound of screams And I Jack, the Pumpkin King Have grown so tired of the same old thing

This structure repeats throughout the song. These are build-up statements about Jack's identity. And Jack's origins with his death and a brief mention of his prior human life fits within that broader theme. It's Jack, once again on-theme with the song, proclaiming who he is, and where he's been, only to go back to the chorus with his doubts and laments.

If you had one wish that could prevent something from happening in the future, what would it be and why? Would it be for yourself, someone else, or the world?

I have been thinking about this a bit recently and don't really have an answer. I have heard broader questions that can change anything, but I haven't really heard it be restricted to the future, so I would like to hear some thoughts

Just Chatting How well do you know your neighbors, and what is your relationship with them?

I used to know my neighbors really well, they have since moved away and now I don't know anyone on either side of me. I never see them outside like my previous neighbor, so it is hard to even get a conversation going.

It had me thinking and I wanted to ask reddit what their situation is like.

Networking/Stay in touch

I have been taking classes as part of my continuing career development and realized that, once the class is over, so is the connection I have with classmates. It’s quite difficult to stay in touch as adults.

Just curious, does any of you encounter the same thing, and if not, what do you do to stay in touch with people from your bootcamp/class? Thank you :)

What’s your guess for the main Halloween costumes this year?

- for kids specifically.

Last year was overwhelmingly kpop demon hunters and almost everyone knew that ahead of time.

Normally by now I have some kind of idea of what the kids are going to dress up as but I am totally lost!

I’ve asked a lot of people and no one knows either.

Like 2024 was a lot of Deadpool/wolverine, inside out, and descendants

2023 was lots of Barbie

2022 was a lot of stranger things, hocus pocus

2021 Spider-Man

2020 superhero’s and dinosaurs

These are what the stats on costumes showed but also my personal experiences. We get between 50-100 trick or treaters and I helped out at a trunk or treat event maybe 3 of those years.

I’m just not sure what pop culture movie/book popped off enough this year to be the winner for kids costumes this year.

I think adults will be lots of dungeon crawler Carl and fourth wing

Life Stories That weird bond you develop with an old machine when you’re the only person alive who knows its specific quirks

There’s a strange intimacy in owning an older laptop, car, or piece of hardware where it only works if you turn the key at a 45-degree angle or tap the chassis once to stop the fan buzzing. Anyone else using it thinks it's broken beyond repair, but to you, it’s just communicating. At what point does mechanical troubleshooting turn into actual affection for an inanimate object?
