Weekly Thread Market Monday - Weekly buy/sell/trade post

Did your friends bail on you for that dope new EDM, Gospel, folk fusion band and need to unload your extra tickets?

Did you salvage some ladders off the Don Holt and want to flip them for beer money?

Need someone to pressure wash your lawn?

This is the thread for you. Rule 2 (no craigslisty buy / sell / trade) and Rule 4 (no self-promo) will be very lightly enforced here.

🚦 James Island I crossed paths with an acquaintance this weekend!

This might sound mundane, but to me it was a pretty big deal. I grew up here and prior to COVID it was pretty normal to be out and about and just randomly run into or someone you knew unexpectedly. Today those encounters seem almost non-existent. (I'm sure being older and out and about less also plays a part, but I am still out there a good bit).

Anyway, this weekend I ran into someone I knew unexpectedly and it gave me the warm fuzzies because it has been a while since that happened. Have any of you had random unexpected encounters with friends while out and about? Anyone feel that its less common now? For people that have moved here more recently, was it common to bump into people you knew when out and about? It'd be fun to hear some stories about unexpected run-ins! Prior to this weekend the last time I ran into a friend unexpectedly was at the airport (getting on the same flight).

South Of Broad Charleston Airport public announcement voice should have a thick Chahlston accent

Inspired by this article in WSJ https://www.wsj.com/lifestyle/boston-logan-international-airport-voice-accent-968ad4e1?st=V5H594&reflink=article_copyURL_share about Boston Logan airport looking for a thick Boston accent for its announcements, I think every city should do the same. I frankly can’t even remember hearing overhead announcements throughout CHS, but they must happen sometimes, right?

Local accents and dialects are dying out—when is the last time you heard a Charleston accent, even from people born and raised here? It’s kind of a shame.

So, to whoever the decision makers at CHS are: go ahead and do this please.

I'd like to enhance my writing skills and meet like-minded people who also like to write

I checked Redux which doesn't seem to have anything coming up soon

Anyone aware of any local writing groups?

North Charleston North Charleston VA

I’m considering an outpatient psychiatry position with the North Charleston VA and would love some firsthand insight from anyone familiar with the facility, especially mental health.

What’s staffing and turnover like? For outpatient psych, about how many patients are typically seen in an 8-hour day, how long are appointments, and how is the admin/support staff?

I’d prefer to work in-office because I like being around people. Is there a decent team/coworker atmosphere, or are providers mostly isolated in their offices?

Also curious about the area itself. What’s the dating/social scene like if you’re looking to date people in their 30s and 40s? And how expensive is it to live reasonably close to the clinic?

Would appreciate any firsthand experiences. DMs are welcome too!

Monday Night Life

Hello!

Getting married on a Monday in Mt. Pleasant. We were looking to possibly book a section somewhere for after the wedding to continue partying. My question is... is it worth it on a Monday? Will it be lively? Also, recommendations for where to book a section at is also appreciated!

Rant Dear River Dogs, I helped you pick up your fireworks litter at Brittlebank this afternoon!

The amount of fuses, bits of plastic, cardboard, and foil that are strewn about the designated off-leash dog area is completely unacceptable. By no means is this all of it either, just what I was able to fit in a spare dog poop bag.

They need to do a more thorough job of picking this shit up after each event, or the city needs to stop allowing them to happen. Who knows how much has ended up in the Ashley River at this point.

(Yes I picked all this up after I took the picture)

Tourist Advice for King Tides this week

First time tourist visit to Charleston near the weekend (older adults, no kids on trip). We know to avoid closed roads and not drive through flooded areas, but are these tides just a thing that happen a few times a year and we don't need to worry too much about them?... or should we be more concerned? Our time will be spent 50% downtown city stuff and 50% beaches.

Is it worth a stop for one night?

I know Charleston is beautiful and I have yet to visit but I’m taking a trip from Florida to North Carolina in April and wanted to break the long drive up and was considering spending one night in Charleston. Is it worth it to stop for one night or should I just make a trip and plan to stay for a few days if I’m going to visit?

Nail salons that can do a cat eye style with gel polish?

Hey y’all,

I have been wanting to get the cat eye design done on my nails, but just with a regular gel polish. The nail salons I have visited recently had told me that they can only do it in either acrylic or gel x. I don’t really want to get my nails done with either of those options since my natural nails grow pretty good on their own already. I am willing to drive anywhere in the Charleston area or outside of it if I need to. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it!

Skinful

Was an embarrassment this year……Idk what that was last night, but it wasn’t it. They advertised both Afroman and Shaq when I first bought my tickets a while ago, but all of a sudden, Afroman disappeared from the lineup. Shaq DJed for two songs, then there was a technical issue, and he bounced.
The setup wasn’t as cool as it was last year, either. There were more vendors and cool things to do last year, too. It was just terrible and not worth the price.
The funny thing is that they’re currently advertising on Instagram like it was the greatest party ever last night.

I’ve been craving a classic Muffaletta. Anyone have an idea where I could get a good one?

I’ve googled a few places with limited success.

Best Car Wash?

Anyone have a favorite car wash? For the sake of discussion, vacuums are important and I love when you get the free vacuum with a car wash but a reasonably priced place that does it for you works too.

Trick or Treating

Will be in Charleston for Halloween with 3 young kids - really need some recommendations so I don't bomb trick-or-treating for them. Was thinking going South of Broad Street, but now second guessing that plan. Hoping for some locals to give me some actual insight if that will be a busy door to door trick or treating area or if its truly worth it to drive somewhere else (would rather now because or hotel is near Broad) like Wagener Terrace or somewhere else. Help!

Best gig work in Charleston??

Long story short, I have a chronic illness that makes working difficult. Some days I’m completely bed ridden and some days I can be up and moving all day long.

I’m looking for work/ jobs that offer flexible hours, any ideas?

Calling all local coffee snobs!

Hi all! I’m needing some coffee recommendations.

I have a Breville Barista pro and need some help finding a great bean. I’ve had some good results from various places, but I’m having issues with consistency. For the last two months, I’ve been using second state’s Prize Fighter and getting great shots! However, I just picked up a new bag and my shots are coming out HORRIBLY. I did some troubleshooting to ensure my machine wasn’t the problem, and after some research, I think I may have gotten some old beans?

Anyway! I would love some recommendations for your favorite locally roasted, fresh, and consistent beans for espresso. I typically go for a roast that falls right between medium and dark. I enjoy trying new beans, but I’d also like a reliable go-to that I don’t have to constantly redial. TIA!!

Seafood/steakhouse birthday restaurant recs?

I'm going back home for my birthday and I'm looking for a nice seafood or steakhouse restaurant if anyone has any recs? Something that wont break the bank as much as Halls, but still has a nice feel that makes you feel like getting more dressed up than casual. TIA!

I’ve been smelling smoke for the last couple hours. First in Hanahan, then Park Circle and by the Airport. Smells like wildfire smoke though.
