University Rankings: Check Them Out Before Asking About Specific Universities!

Hey everyone,

I've noticed that a lot of folks here keep asking questions like, “How good is [University X]?” or “Is [University Y] worth it for [Course Z]?” These are really important questions, especially if you’re planning to invest time, money, and effort into your education.

Instead of getting repetitive responses, I highly recommend checking out the latest university rankings first.

https://www.shanghairanking.cn/ Chinese version has the ranking of majors and disciplines.

https://www.shanghairanking.com/

Once you’ve checked out the rankings, feel free to come back here with more specific questions like how certain programs or campus cultures align with your goals. That way, the community can give you more targeted advice!

Hope this helps streamline your search!

Admissions Question 入学问题 Evaluation of the chances of getting into CS Master's in English (or PhD if possible) at Tsinghua/Peking.

I will be an international student who want to change my study destination just to get to see how the environment compromising of some of the brightest mind is (ofc I'm also interested in NLP and it seems like THU and PKU is doing great in this field).

I have heard the competition is fierce and it will be a good challenge to compete with others to gain a slot in these programs. So I decided to come here and ask for more information from those who know more than I do.

Currently close to graduating with the below stats.

  • CS Major at a university currently ranked within the top 70 based on THE
  • GPA: 3.97/4.5 (every .5 is a "+" letter in letter grade), or 94.7/100 (it is written like that on my transcript)
  • IELTS: 8.0
  • Total research experience of 6 months at 2 NLP labs at my home uni and Yonsei.
  • Exchanged at NTU Singapore and SNU Korea (idk whether these are relevant or not but I took full major courses at these unis and maxed out the exchange credit limit)
  • Multiple academic excellence scholarships for being within the top 30% of the dept, and a "stipend" type scholarship given to the top 50 candidates who went on an exchange at a partner university institution (again idk whether this is relevant or not so I'm just going to leave it here).

I am just curious how this profile will compete with other candidates and wanted to see where I am standing. So if you guys are able to help me answer these questions then I would love to appreciate your kindness:)

Thank you to all who spent time reading this post and commented! Have a good day to y'all!

Admissions Question 入学问题 Do I have a chance for Chinese university’s for undergrad and CS?

I have a 3.6 weighted and a 3.4 unweighted gpa. I got 4 Cs in freshman year 2 Cs in honors bio and 2 Cs in Spanish. I didn’t really take any hard classes after freshman year and I got decent grades. Got all A’s in math and my college classes related to stem. Got a 50/100 for physics and 80/100 for math on csca. I am also HSK4 but want to do an english taught program. I also got a 1100 on the SAT.

Admissions Question 入学问题 What to do with legal guardian stuff?

Hello, I am planning to study in China in the next year, enrolling in September and going to turn 18 in October. Is there any service that can provide one month of legal guardianship, or do you recommend something else about that?

Life in China 在中国生活 how hard is managing MBBS and chinese?

i'm a foreign student who wants to study my bachelor's degree in china. i've heard that when i apply for MBBS they would give me chinese classes along side, but as someone who doesn't know a single word in chinese i'm afraid it would be too much to handle both at the same time.. so i'd love it if some foreign gave me some insight on this!

(i am thinking of taking a language semester there in march, or just taking chinese classes in my country here, but i'm still not sure if i'll be able to do that.)

Admissions Question 入学问题 I applied to Fudan's 2027 Spring Semester Chinese Language Program, anyone else?

I just applied to the 2027 Spring Semester but I've read a lot of people saying that Fudan sometimes admits students too late.

I was wondering if anyone else applied and if anyone who was admitted knows how long it takes to be fully accepted and their experience at Fudan (if they are already there).

Also, I'm looking for a second option in case Fudan takes too long, any recommendations? (I'm thinking maybe Peking University, BLCU or Nanjing University)

Campus Life 校园生活 Typing Chinese for campus life without installing a keyboard: Pinyin, handwriting and reusable phrases

Need to enter a library search, a dorm message or a delivery note on a shared computer? Here is a small Chinese typing workflow using https://chinput.net/ .

Useful campus vocabulary to practise:

图书馆 — tushuguan — library

宿舍 — sushe — dormitory

食堂 — shitang — canteen

快递 — kuaidi — parcel/express delivery

老师 — laoshi — teacher

谢谢 — xiexie — thank you

These are the target characters to look for, not a promise that they will always be the first candidate. Compare university, building and personal names with their official spelling.

Try nihao first: select 你好, then Copy. You can paste it into a message without changing the computer's language settings. For a character you recognise on a campus sign but cannot pronounce, use the handwriting method below.

There is no dedicated campus scene yet. Food & delivery, Places & maps and Renting cover some everyday tasks. In Food & delivery, click 不要辣,不要香菜。 for “Not spicy, no coriander.” Another button inserts 请放门口,不用打电话,谢谢! (“Please leave it at the door, no need to call. Thanks!”). Use that only if it matches your actual instructions.

For long-term study, learning your device's built-in Chinese keyboard is worthwhile. A browser tool is handy when you cannot change that device's settings. What campus words would you want in a student phrase list?

Three ways to enter the text

  1. Pinyin: type one word or short phrase, check the candidates, then press Space for the first choice or its displayed number for another. If a phrase is wrong, split it into smaller parts. Full Pinyin is easier to check when starting out.

  2. Handwriting: open Draw and draw one character with a mouse, trackpad or touch screen, lifting between strokes. Select the correct local matching result. Undo removes the last stroke; Clear starts again. This is handwriting matching, not photo scanning.

  3. Quick phrases: choose the relevant scene below the editor. Its vocabulary gets priority and its phrase buttons insert ready-made text. Edit the result, click Copy, then paste where you need it.

Core Pinyin and handwriting need no account or input-method installation. Optional AI translation is currently disabled. Mainland China access has not been verified; save essential text beforehand. Disclosure: I run Chinput, the browser typing tool in this guide.

Life in China 在中国生活 Should I do my undergrad at a Chinese university? Be harsh if you need to

Edit:

Many people have brought up valid concerns and benefits of why I should/ shouldn’t study in China, but I think they have helped solidify that I want to study in China.

One major concern is the world rankings of Chinese universities, which did concern me until I looked into what those rankings were.

When I compare them to local universities in the UK many of the Chinese unis I’m interested in rank higher.

For example:
Wuhan university: ~160th
Shenzhen University: ~400th
Fudan University: ~30th

UCL: ~8th
University of Sheffield: ~80th
University of Lincoln: ~850-900
Sheffield Hallam: ~ 1000-1200

Given my grades (A*AA in A-levels) I could likely get into any of those.

I also think it’s important to consider the benefits greater than just where the degree came from. For example, Fudan, Shenzhen, and UCL have access to large banks and global businesses. And at any of the Chinese universities I would be able to get global businesses perspectives and learn Mandarin, so the soft skills learn in China outweighs that in the uk.

Another concern is the quality of education, which is a major concern for me. However, considering that I am interested in International economics and trade rather than a hands on discipline like medicine or engineering I could likely get a good gpa by studying from the PowerPoints and putting a moderate amount of effort in.

Finally, the financial side. As much as I may be able to get into top UK unis, I straight up can’t afford it. I don’t want to have to take out expensive student loans where I repay £100s monthly until I’m 60. Furthermore, even on the maximum student loans id only be able to afford tuition and housing, maybe food, so I have to work part time a LOT which would distract me and cause my GPA to drop. Given the scholarship opportunities and the general low cost of living in China this wouldn’t be an issue so my experience would hopefully help more positive.

The post grad market is pretty dire in both countries, with both having insane amounts of youth unemployment. By at least there is jobs available in China, even if they are much more likely to go to a local grad. Unlike in the UK where jobs simply don’t exist or pay peanuts.

Thanks for all your perspectives helping me to choose!! :)

(Sorry if the tagging is wrong)

I’ve been considering studying international economics and trade or economics (English taught) in China, but I’m feeling discouraged since everyone says not to.

Personally, I just want to have fun without a too demanding work load- enough to have weekends and evenings free and minimal academic stress.

After grad I want to work as an English teacher (I have a uk passport so I believe that it will be ok). Long term I would get my iQTS so I could work in international schools or in Hong Kong.

I’m considering both Shenzhen university due to its location and Wuhan university due to its prestige. I know that Chinese unis usually don’t have high reputations in the UK and outside of China, however since I would like to stay in China long term would this be an issue?

If I was not to become a teacher I would like to work in trade so China would likely be the optimal place for that.

Do you think this is a suitable plan? Also, how academically demanding are Wuhan and Shenzhen university week to week?

Scholarships 奖学金 CSC student: withdraw consequences?

I read that we should all have a CSC scholarship contract, and that should have details about withdrawing, however I cannot seem to find that anywhere, including in online portal. Could someone explain where exactly they keep this? Or could someone explain what kind of penalties I will need to pay if I withdraw from university?

Admissions Question 入学问题 NEED HONEST ADVICE for 27' intake

hi 19F. I wanna apply via chinese track to increase chances for csc A scholarship. But again I'm a bit conflicted since unis like HITSZ offer English tracks (CS). I'll sit for the CSC exam in December.

gpa: 5/5

expectes csca scores: 80-85

(its unstable, idk how authentic the mocks are)

ielts: 8.5

ec: community work, digital marketing campaigns, mentored juniors in a youth organization, learnt python and got a few projects (ongoing)

Do I go for c9 unis or eye 985 ones like Beihaang University? Also should I try the English track or 1+4 chinese track?

Admissions Question 入学问题 Researching for a Master's degree in China + Questions about BNBU/Zhuhai

Hi all! As the title suggests, I'm researching any Chinese universities to do my Master's in Linguistics (or Applied Linguistics, Linguistics of a Foreign Language etc.), and I had a few questions!

I know that China's MA degrees typically last 3 years as opposed to the UK 1 year long courses, but really a 1 year course is what I'm looking for - I don't think I can live abroad for any longer than that! I know UNNC and BNBU both offer this (as they are tied with Nottingham and Liverpool University), alongside XJLU which is 1.5 years. I wasn't sure if anybody knew the best way for me to be able to find any others that follow this criteria? I feel like only having 3 options really feels like I'm putting all of my eggs in one basket... I've so far looked at about 50 different universities and they're all about the same-ish length. Most Linguistics degrees follow roughly the same structure, so I am not too bothered about course specifics at this moment in time as this is not an imminent decision to make just yet!

As for BNBU, I have been studying Mandarin for about 5/6 years, and I have done HSK 4 and I am looking to carry on to HSK 5, but I am aware that Guangdong speaks mainly Cantonese. I'm worried that if I end up studying at BNBU, the whole point of me studying this degree in China to enrich my Mandarin speaking will be a little pointless if I move to a Cantonese-speaking area... But I also hear that many people in Guangdong/Zhuhai do speak Mandarin? Will I be able to get around and be able to practise my language abilities? Of course, I can always learn Cantonese, but as I would only be there for 12 months, I'd like to be able to ask questions or make conversation comfortably with the language that I already know

Thanks for any help or insight you guys can give me!

Scholarships 奖学金 How can an Algerian civil engineering student find a fully funded research internship in China for Summer 2027?

Hi everyone!
I’m a fourth-year Civil Engineering student at USTO-MB in Algeria, currently specializing in Civil and Industrial Construction. I’ll hopefully be entering my fifth year in 2027–2028.
I’m interested in spending part of Summer 2027 at a Chinese university or research laboratory for a short-term research internship in structural engineering, particularly reinforced concrete structures or steel structures.
I’m trying to understand how this process works for international undergraduate students, as I have never applied for a research internship abroad before.
I would really appreciate advice on the following:
How can I find Chinese professors or research labs that accept visiting undergraduate students for summer internships?
Is it possible to contact professors directly, even if they haven’t advertised an internship opportunity?
Are there Chinese universities or summer research programs that offer full funding to international students, including flights, accommodation, and living expenses?
What should I prepare before contacting professors (CV, transcript, motivation letter, recommendation letter, etc.)?
Would you recommend applying through a university program or contacting a professor directly?
Unfortunately, I cannot cover the travel and accommodation costs myself, so I’m specifically looking for fully funded opportunities.
If you’ve completed a similar internship in China, especially as an international undergraduate student, I’d love to hear about your experience and how you found your opportunity.
Thank you so much for any advice or recommendations!

Life in China 在中国生活 Chinese Language Course at Shanghai International Studies University

Hi everyone,

I'm considering going to Shanghai for about a month in April or May 2027 for a language course at Shanghai International Studies University, and I'd love to hear from anyone who has done their Chinese language program.

I have a couple of questions because I can barely find anything online about people's experiences.

1. For anybody who has done the course, how is it? I know a month is a short time, and I'm not expecting miracles, but I would hope that the course is at least well organised, the teachers are nice, and it's an overall good experience.

2. How is it finding accommodation? Is it easy to find something at a good price for a month?

3. How is it with finding friends? This is probably my biggest concern. Since I'd only be staying for a month, I can't stay in the university dorms. I'm worried that this might make it harder to meet people and make friends, especially since I'm not really a solo traveller. I went to Korea for an exchange, and I wouldn't have had any friends if it weren't for my dormmates, so I'm a bit nervous about not living in a dorm since, most of the time, people make the whole experience.

If you've done the program, was it easy to meet other international students in their 20s? Did you mostly socialise with people from your classes, or did the university help bring students together? Or are there other ways to find other solo travellers in Shanghai?

4. Does SISU organise any activities, excursions or cultural experiences that short-term students can join? Or is it mainly classes, with everyone doing their own thing afterwards?

5. I'm hoping to join the semester in April or May for approximately one month. Has anyone joined the program for just a month during the spring semester? How did that work in practice, and were there other short-term students around?

I've also looked at summer programs at universities such as Donghua, which offer a more organised experience with accommodation included. However, I'm a bit worried about Shanghai's summer heat and humidity because I don't do well with heat, so I'm trying to find a different way.

Thank you so much for reading this long post, and I'll be grateful for any advice you can give me. If anybody has a different university or language school they recommend, I'll also be grateful! :)

Scholarships 奖学金 Foreigner Physical Exam from UK for scholarship applications?

I’m looking at applying for a masters at some Chinese universities and it looks like for most scholarships I’ve seen they require this exam in the application as well as on arrival. Does anyone from the UK have any experience with this? I’ve seen a few previous posts from years ago but there has been very few responses. Some said this can be done through GP where they just answer what they can and others have done it privately and done the whole thing?

I’m looking for responses from the UK particularly!
