Some subreddit housekeeping

Hello pain fam, I hope today is slightly less horrible than usually for you. I wanted to take a moment and advise folks about commenting on OLD posts and comments. You haven't been able to post/comment on old posts for awhile because I turned archiving on. The other day, a scientist asked me to unarchive a post they were using to track their research. In order to do this, I had to turn off archiving for the ENTIRE SUBREDDIT.

This is posing some problems. Y'all jumped on these ancient posts like flys on poop. This is bad for a number of reasons. For one, the OP is probably no longer active, the people forget what the conversation was even about. Secondly, EVERY SINGLE TIME one of you comments on a post that is older than a month old, I have to deal with your stuff being in the queue. I remove almost every single one of these because they're oftentimes accounts that this is their very first interaction in our subreddit, which is indicative of a bot trying to farm karma (badly, I might add).

SO PLEASE LOOK AT THE TIME STAMPS ON THE POSTS YOU ARE INTERACTING WITH!!!!!

Should I tell my GP about my chronic opiate use

ngl I've been on tapentadol for 2 years now, anywhere between 600-1000mg daily, I wanna get off, but ofc wanna taper down..

But I fear my doc is just gonna shove me onto subs or methadone. Honestly I just want pain relief. I went to him like 5 times and he didnt offfer anything really even though (and this part is true) I was telling him I'm starting to feel sickly taking 4 ibuprofen and 4 paracetamol a day.

I took matters in my own hands and it worked, for like 5-7 months I got my quality of life back, but I have built a pretty sizeable tolerance. Ngl I just cant afford to be spending sm money on drugs, but I also am in horrific pain.. Idk what to do i feel stuck and like im out of options:(

Is bupe enough to 1 keep me 'sober' and 2 provide enough relief that I keep my quality of life?

Methadone from what I've seen is lowkey just a gateway to heroin/fent since u keep a tolerance, im rlly at a cross roads, should I continue to self medicate? I will take a lil 5-6 day tapered down dose but then 2 weeks later im back here where they provide relief, but for probably only 2-3 hours, and even then it just doesnt hit the way it used to:/

Odd response when venting to friend

• Upvotes

I was venting to a friend about how the world is not set up to accommodate those of us with disabilities, especially those of us who try to find meaningful work but can’t keep up. They know I have depression induced by my conditions and they said that, “it’s much better now; you would’ve been locked up in an asylum 50 years ago,” along with “they would’ve left you in a field to die 1000 years ago.” I have no clue how that justifies how things are now, and just made me feel shittier. I know I can’t handle certain work environments anymore now and it was more upsetting to hear someone able-bodied say something when they never physically experienced what I’ve gone through. I just needed to vent…feeling extra terrible today.

r/ChronicPain • • 21h ago

They say increasing physical activity reduces pain and they say the cause of pain is lack of physical activity. For those who are always fatigued or don't have enough energy to spare, do you still push exercising because those are the instructions?

Anxiety before appointments

• Upvotes

Does anyone else experience severe anxiety when they have a doctor’s appointment that day? I have chronic pain and chronic/autoimmune diseases and I feel awful most days.
On good days I’ll get up and dressed and have no issue but on days where my pain is bad or I’m feeling really bad I have such anxiety about going to the appointment and want to cancel but then have anxiety about how they will react to me canceling

I feel like a weirdo and an idiot.

Why you ask? For so long my doctor’s have been telling me that I’m too young to be in chronic pain as if I’ve been making it up, all of my imaging is lying, and I made or bribed 5-6 physicians to perform surgery on me. Not only is the age conversion annoying but it diminishes my experience with it. Why do “doctors” need to say “if you were 65-80 I’d definitely adjust your pain medication but you’re too young.” So I have to wish I were hit by a speeding bus every day, multiple times a day until I’m 65 and had zero ability to make a life for myself?!? Make that make sense! I can’t even see myself making it to 40 or next week for that matter because after 20+ years, my pain has drifted into every aspect of my life and set it on fire. My therapist gently stated that that type of thinking is a weakness and stretching is the answer 🤷🏽‍♀️.

I did find a PM provider who will see me to try some new medicines and make a “very small” adjustment to a pain medication after years of zero changes and not asking for it. I know, something is better than nothing but the totality of pain and all it encompasses is REAL. It’s fucking depressing.

Maybe you guys can share…how old are you and how long ago did your pain journey start? What’s the diagnosis? Do you have PM help or have they sent you out to sea? If you’re not comfortable sharing your age, share how long your journey has been.

I’m 38, and as of June it’s been 20 years.

You matter…just sayin’ :)

How do you deal with not hoping?

I don't know how to explain this properly but I always find myself in the same cycle of getting my hopes up and then being disappointed or dissatisfied only for something new to come up and the cycle starts again.

Some background info

I am young woman always been "healthy" and AVG weight but decently tall. NHS not private atm

- misdiagnosed at 7-8 years old with "growing pains" and "excess bone growth

- spent the next 12 years of my life in pain and ignoring it cause I was scared of the supposed "surgery" I would've needed

- finally got tired of it went to my old GP who said everything was normal

- saw a different GP at the same practice who reffered me to physio who never showed up to the appointment.

- self reffered to podiatry last year (13 years in now) who said oh shit you have PTTD, PF and rolling ankles

- made me some nice insoles and booked a follow up

- follow up discovered Morton's neuroma! New insoles again and a refferal to MSK Physio after realising my knees were being not right (his words)

- MSK physio made me feel seen but the activities were so painful

- reffered to rheumatology! (Supposedly)

- rejected from rheumatology (supposedly)

- reffered again! (Supposedly) And told no more appointments just wait for rheumatology!

- takes us to early this year. We moved house and I finally decided after waiting 9 months to hear from rheumatology that I would get a new GP and chase it.

- New GP assessed me said yep rheumatology referral is needed here. No refferal on the system. I was never referred.

- New GP refers me and orders full blood panel

- bloods come back in deficient in some stuff but everything else is "within normal range" or "negative"

- start tablets and injections for my low stuff

- rheumatology rejected me. Said they didn't handle cases like mine

- reffered to pain management (I asked) to help me until we got me in somewhere

- pain relief !!!!

- refferal to Orthopedics now at a huge ass hospital

- now waiting to see if they accept me

How do I get over this bullshit cycle

I'm tired and I wanna just have some answers.

Can someone tell me what I can actually do other than wait and check the NHS app every 10 minutes.

When You Dream Do You Feel Pain?

It’s weird. I’ve had constant chronic pain for five years, so it should be mentally engraved into my mind, but oftentimes when I dream about myself, I don’t feel the pain; I feel normal. Technically, even if I am sleeping, I’m still in constant pain, but my brain doesn’t process that I am in pain. I’m just curious if anyone else feels this way.

PT office doesn’t believe I’m in pain anymore.

• Upvotes

I already had issues with my feet and my eyes and now I get injured and don’t heal right. 3 months of PT and I’m still in pain almost daily. I got a lot of my mobility and flexibility back and went back to work on light duty, and the past few weeks I’ve noticed a switch at the clinic. Backhanded comments from aids implying I’m faking, backhanded comments about the exercises being “too easy”, keeping me waiting longer.

I’m not trying to complain or tell anyone how to do their job, but it’s pretty clear I’m not a priority and they don’t want me there anymore. So I’m not gonna keep going 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve stopped improving so I guess I’m just gonna have to learn to cope with this. Some of my coworkers got similar injuries and I’m just gonna copy their regimens.

Stable over 30 years, now unstable

My Dr retired. Now I am on my third doctor. They took away my medications.

I'm now unstable.

I'm really tired of this.

I'm not going to fight these Drs.

Dolly Parton admitted that she didn't take care of herself when Dean died.

I've decided that I am not going to pursue any future medical treatment.

They simply don't care and took away my mental health medicine.

If they don't care about my mental health or my physical well being, then I can't function at all.

Elementary teacher with back pain trying to help myself

I am a 5th grade teacher and have had chronic back issues and pain for over 20 years now. My pain was being controlled with Mobic, lyrica, but it had just gotten worse. I feel like it goes in waves from having a surgery and recovering, feeling good for 4-6 years and then the pain moves but comes back and I can hardly function. I go into a deep depression each time because it’s so bad that when I get home all I can do is lay down. It’s bad at work too, but I do as much as I can.

I struggle to take care of myself at work since it is such a demanding job. On a good day I get to use the restroom at least twice. I’m trying to figure out what I can do even while dealing with moody pre-teens that need a ton of help academically, to help save my body.

I do already wear great supportive shoes but usually I struggle to be on my feet anyways. I also have a good work chair. I’m considering asking for accommodations but don’t even know what to ask for and what is “reasonable” especially in a job where I am the only adult in the room all day long.

Thanks in advance to this great community. We can do this, right? Sending you all my love.

Struggling with my able bodied friends.

• Upvotes

Ive had chronic pain for more than a decade now, and when I was younger it brought a lot of interpersonal problems with kids my age not understanding invisible disabilities.

Around high school age, I got much better with advocating for myself and met a really great group of people. We stayed close in to college even as my health situation fluctuated and progressed. Over this summer, for whatever reason, I had lots of individual conflicts with various friends and it resulted in me losing touch with them. It’s been about 4 months now that my primary support system and friend group has really fallen off.

I’m looking back on those friendships with a weird perspective. Keep in mind that I’m actively going through being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and starting immune suppressing treatment in the coming weeks, have been struggling with feelings of isolation in relation to health for a long time. I’m struggling a lot with some big (irrational) feelings.

How could my friends abandon me while I’m going through something so difficult?
(Do my friends make enough of an attempt to accommodate or understand my disability? Am I expecting too much of these healthy 20-something college students? Do I put too much pressure on others in relation to my disability?)

I’m in a tricky situation where I need to somewhat isolate myself physically but don’t want to isolate myself mentally. I’m 23 and really struggling with feeling SO envious of my healthy friends and people my age. My pain has been present for so many years and will be life long but that is a very difficult concept for people my age to truly internalize.

It’s just feeling super hard to navigate right now. I get that there’s nothing new about me being in pain but I do wish people could be there for me the way they can be there for others having an acutely bad moment. And I wish I could have the same freedoms as the people around me.

How do I respond to "maybe you haven't tried hard enough or looked for the right doctors"

It really pisses me off when healthy people say this and I usually attack them back and that doesn't do anything. What ways do you guys respond to this that shows them that what they said was mean and that we do in fact are trying harder than they ever could

Vent

For me, it feels almost certain that this pain will never heal. There is no medication to ease the symptoms, no antibiotics I can use due to resistance, and the medicine I want to get has been discontinued. My body has also been damaged by side effects, so I can't even continue treatment. Please don't ask what disease it is—if you are curious, you can find out by looking at my profile.
My life has collapsed, and I can barely manage daily activities. I cry every single day. I'm just waiting for the WHO and CDC to address this issue. Every part of my life is a mess. If I have to spend the rest of my life suffering like this for no meaning at all, I don't want to live anymore.

How do you guys deal with it?

Hi everyone. I’ve been burdened with chronic migraines for the past five years. I’m a senior in highschool now and my pain forces me to be absent a LOT, making academics really difficult. It obviously also impedes on other various aspects of life. I was just looking for some insight on how others who face similar issues stay sane. I get so frustrated with the world because it feels like my life is being stolen from right out of my feet. There is nothing I wish more than to just be normal. Any tips?

I've been off opioids since January, having weaned myself off due to my pm doc being a total Richard head. I reported him after he put blatant lies in my medical record. So I've been relying on the last few Toradol I have left and only use every few months or so.

Today I was on my feet for 1.5 hours. Ten minutes is usually my limit and since I had some yard work that's been put off for too long, I took a tablet and got to work. It wasn't long before my back was protesting, loudly. But I really needed to get this done.

Went to put some cut branches in the pile and tripped over the rain drain gutter. I landed mostly on my right side, wrenching my knee, hip, back and shoulder in the process. There were quite a few scrapes also as I fell on the concrete sidewalk.

Now, I'm in so much pain that the Toradol isn't making a difference and even though I haven't eaten today, food is the last thing on my mind. But, life goes on for husband and dog and maybe I'll get to relax later.

Hurting all day, every day, is bad enough without adding injuries on top. Crap.

I need a reality check - degenerative disc disease

I (25F) was diagnosed at 19 with DDD with a large driving force of it suspected of being my physically abusive boyfriend at the time, but I do remember a few times when I was 12 or 13 where I had this intense feeling that I needed to crack my back but I couldn't for a few days but it resolved on its own eventually.

Interestingly enough, my ex had something similar for a short period after one of the accidents (back pain bad enough to put him on the floor in pain).

For the first year or two I had a spasm every few months. My muscle relaxers stopped working on the last few spasms and I was on the floor for 2-4 hours before it would subside. I started going to the gym to strengthen my back and smoking medical marijuana and it helped a lot.

During this time, I had minor issues with attendence at work but nothing crazy and I had a 60 hour set work week remote for a year or so and only missed 3 days that year.

Now, 5 years later, I am Struggling. I take 1-4 days off a month with FMLA because I wake up with nerve pain and/or back pain and the medical marijuana, Aleve, and Meloxicam aren't helping much anymore, more like a minor dull but the pain is very much there. I haven't had many active spasms to put me on the floor and make it hard to breathe lately, but I take preventative care Very seriously now and I try to take time off when I start to feel the white hot pain or the dull ache becoming sharper and mounting in intensity to get it taken care of before I spasm. May be TMI here but my period back pain will make it almost impossible to get out of pain as well for that week and the stiffness from trying to stay in the one position that is slightly better never ends it feels like. Although my DDD is mid thoracic per my primary, I am having intense nerve pain on my right side (right hip radiating down and making me wake up from sleep, and a knot under my right ear that sends white hot shooting pain down my neck when I turn my head too quick or too far to one side - this white hot pain lasts at least a minute and aches deeply in the knot the whole time).

My manager started trying to interfere with my FMLA leave, got that resolved with an HR complaint, but now I feel like my pain is even worse everyday and my anxiety keeps getting worse the more I go in and see the manager and him gossiping with all the other managers (thinking it's about me - I know that's irrational and I try very hard not to feed it, but it doesn't help when I do catch them gossiping about me and I used to sit behind them so I know the things they talk about and how they talk about employees). I can't afford physical therapy but my sister is a message therapist and she does massage/cupping/heat and cold therapy for me but I can't afford it as often as would really help.

To expand on the environment at work as well, I work in insurance claims and the turnover at that office is 63%, the caseload is unreasonable, the managers are micromanagey, and it is Very difficult to meet your metrics unless you are multitasking every second of the 8 hour work day and using overtime. There is also a huge focus on extreme butt kissing for the clients so just being formal and not joking around/emoting very obviously in a positive way, they ding you for customer service even if you were helpful and did everything you had to. When I am in pain, it is hard for me to fake this as I am an introvert and very logical and I've been compared to a European woman (?) in the way I am not super bubbly and overtly cheerful all the time. Luckily I got a promotion but I am not sure how much worse/better the next level up will be.

I have a ton of anxiety with work as well because of that HR issue and now me taking more time which makes me worry they will start threatening termination again for using the FMLA too much. My FMLA paperwork was accepted for 1-4 days per month, but they really don't like it when I have to do that.

My reality check is, from other people who have this issue, is this normal to have this level of pain that keeps you from work 1-4 days a month when you only use an NSAID and medical marijuana for coping or does this seem excessive? I struggle with chronic anxiety, depression, and maybe PTSD from that past abusive relationship, sexual assault as a young minor, and some other traumas early in my life. I am worried that these mental issues are making me feel like my pain is a lot worse than it is and I don't want to lose my job if I just need to accept that this level of pain will always be there and I need to learn to work through it and it might improve with further therapy for the mental health issues.

Other than this reality check, if you guys agree that this environment would have this effect for someone with DDD, do you have any recommendations for low stress jobs that pay $20+ that work out better with your DDD? Remote very highly preferred but not required.

Recommendations for a portable heating pad

I really want to see that new Nathan Fielder documentary, but it’s 3 hours and sitting that long will kill my back and enrage sciatica. Any recommendations for a portable heating pad? Would also be helpful to have for car rides and such. Thanks in advance.

Edit: would prefer something that can stay warm for awhile vs the hand warmer type things

I’ve been in a flare for 5 days. I wake up (with no memory of falling asleep) hoping today will be better. Ahhh!! Someone just asked how I’m doing. I was honest. Miserable horrible exhausted irritable suicidal. If this torture continues I’m gone. A person can only take so much.
