Is decolonisation a concept that applies to Russia?
I am not talking about the entire country, but the parts that were settled outside its european core, i.e. Siberia and the north Caucasus.
I do not have a deep enough understanding of russian history to understand if russia's acquisition of Siberia was comparable to the settler colonialism of the US. For example the Sakha people currently seem to be doing much better than any group of indigenous people in anglo settler colonies.
However in many other cases the result seems to be similar. Many native populations lost political control after conquest by russia, lost economic control over their territories as they were exploited for tsarist gain, and eventually became a minority in their homeland due to an influx of slavic settlers which further solidified russian control over their former lands. For example, Russians are the majority in the Altai republic and in the Buryat republic, among others in Siberia. As far as I am aware these republics are in practice under Russian political control; for example, while they have greater political autonomy, in their elections both Russians and indigenous people have equal votes, with Russians usually being a higher proportion of the population.
In the north caucasus, the country which seems to be the closest to anglo settler colonialism is Circassia. It was systematically depopulated by the imperial army in the early 19th century and extensively settled with russian and ukrainian settlers. Today the majority of the circassian population lives in turkey where they found refuge, and the small population inside the original territory of the country is found in two small enclaves (and in one of the two russian is the most populous ethnicity). Perhaps superficially so, but this reminds me of the current status of reservations in the US.
I understand that I am probably missing something that makes these two situations completely different, because I have never seen anyone in these forums bringing up the decolonisation of Russia. I also understand that Russia is not currently the major world superpower, and that balkanising it right now is a goal of the NATO block. However as I understand it communists would advocate for the decolonisation of settler colonies even if they were in a disadvantegeous geopolitical situation. For this reason I would appreciate an explanation of my mistake, or resources for further reading.
