News Across Connecticut, anxiety fuels data center backlash

Thumbnail

Local officials in many parts of Connecticut are not waiting for the national data center boom to come to them.

Earlier this month, for example, the East Lyme Zoning Commission voted unanimously to adopt an indefinite ban on all data center development, one of the first such blanket prohibitions in Connecticut. The ban, which went into effect on Saturday, came before anyone had announced even the faintest plan to construct a data center in the coastal town.

This is the dirt they can find on this guy?

No shade if you have legitimate reasons not to vote for this man, but the Republican opposition is really digging for smears against this guy if all they've got is "he explained the Pride flag to his students" and "he put up his own campaign sign in his own classroom." Give me a break. And I looked into the story about the resignation. It's a little dodgy (he had a student get a package from the office for him not realizing the package contained prescription drugs his wife had dropped off), and I can see the poor judgement angle there, but jeez.... Again, this is the worst stuff they can get on this guy? These are their character attacks? Even the local GOP social media page has people whining that he "doesn't get the issues real Americans care about" because he ran a Dungeons and Dragons club for his students. Seriously, people? These are your arguments before the midterms to try and win voters over to your side? Not policies or appeals to better values, but some "dirt" about this guy being a teacher who taught things somebody may not like?

The unfortunate thing, ofc, is that it will probably work on some people

When does everyone start turning on the heat for their home?!

It’s already 63 degrees in my house, but feels especially colder at night and early mornings. I typically wait until after Halloween, but it seems rather odd feeling cold already before November when at times it’s still 60-70 degrees during the day.

Local Business Blasius dealership urgent question?

I have a multiple-thousand-dollar deposit on a vehicle and was called by the salesperson on their personal cell phone after hours and was told that all of their dealerships are closing and the salespeople were informed around 1pm today. When I pushed and said I really wanted the vehicle and asked how I could make the sale happen, I was told the only way I can purchase the vehicle is by financing through them, tomorrow... What is happening? I am multiple states away but it is an extremely hard to find configuration of a vehicle that I have spent three years looking for. I have tons of documented communication with them. The fact that they are telling me that I won’t be able to make the sale unless I use their financing rather than the credit union financing I was already pre-approved for feels suspect. I actually trust my credit union sponsored warranty program vs the “Global” warranty product that they sell.

I wouldn’t have any hesitation if they would just take my bank check and hand me over the vehicle but once I finance and warranty through their partnered financial products I’m stuck with them at least until I refinance ASAP.

Has anyone down there heard this about Blasius? If it’s true then someone else must’ve been told the same thing? I’m distraught.

Ask Connecticut Health Insurance when grievance filed

After 2 years with health insurance purchased through the marketplace, my coverage was rescinded. Can't get an answer as to why; Anthem and Access Health CT are pointing fingers at each other. I filed a grievance with the CT Dept of Ins, but haven’t heard back (filed 2 weeks ago - I wasn't expecting a quick reply). In the meantime, I'm paying out of pocket from medication and doctor's visits. Does anyone know if I can get health insurance while this is being investigated? It can't be for non-payment because was receiving the subsidy from the state. I reviewed my initial app with Access Health and it was all in order.

Best way to get to JFK airport?

I’m located in Vernon CT and looking at my
Options for the best way to get to JFK airport. I would be going on 10-14 day trips. I can get dropped off by a family member to about an hour radius, besides that nobody wants to drive there and back and deal with all the traffic/ ect. Interested in seeing what others here do.

Sorry; by best I mean cheapest / best value price

Apartments near New London

I am looking at apartments within ~25 min of new London, CT. I am looking for a 1 bedroom, pet friendly spot (28lb corgi). My budget is reasonable, I want to spend $2,100 or less each month total. I’ve already viewed The Sound in East Lyme, The Ledges in Groton, and Waterford Woods in Waterford. They all had very similar pros with few cons, they just are slightly above my budget. If anyone had any feedback on these spots or had other suggestions to look at that would be great. I was only able to look at 3 today. I just want to make sure I’m in a safe spot and make sure it’s dog friendly.
Thanks!!

Awesome hike at Giuffrida State Park today. We could see all the way to the Sound, Hartford and MA peaks. Only complaint is that some people haven’t heard of Leave No Trace.

Anyone else at CT state community college unable to register for classes?

I’ve been trying to register for my classes since midnight. It just sits on the loading screen. I went in to see my advisor and they were useless. I only need five more classes to graduate and for two of them there’s only class available. Am I alone here? I’ve tried both home computers, a school one, and my phone. No luck.
