General assistance What are mentors like in this field?
19M from Australia, starting the hunt for a heavy diesel apprenticeship next week. I’m stoked to get into the trade, but I’m a bit worried about the culture. I did some work experience in high school where the environment was basically just bullying under the guise of "teaching," which made me feel like an idiot for not knowing everything off the bat.(mainly the boss)
To prep, I’ve been studying tech videos and quizzing myself daily so I’m not a liability on day one. I fully expect to do the annoying grunt work and clean bays, but how harsh are heavy vehicle mentors usually? Also, what’s the baseline expectation for a green apprentice? Am I expected to know how to operate things like forklifts right away, or do they teach you from scratch? Cheers.
