Look at this new Duolingo feature Product Update: Image Flashcards, Avatar Suits & Chess Game Review (October 2026)

Duolingo just announced three new features 📣

🃏 Image Flashcards
At the end of a lesson, you'll see a picture and say the word out loud. There are no answer choices. Miss one and you'll see and hear the correct word, and the card comes back later for another try. At the end you get a recap of the words you struggled with, along with their translations. You can skip a card or tap "Can't speak now" if you're somewhere quiet.

👔 Avatar Suits
Earn special suits for your avatar during limited-time events by making progress in your lessons. Each event has its own window to collect its featured suits. Once you earn a suit it's yours to keep, and you can switch between your suits anytime. Read more here: Lily's Fright Fest

♟️ Chess Game Review
Review key moments from your games against Oscar, friends or other players in your chess match history. Instead of just showing you the better move, it takes you back to that position so you can find it yourself. Then Oscar explains why your move did or didn't work.

As always, new features roll out gradually, so if you don't have them yet, make sure your app is updated and hang tight.

Look at this new Duolingo feature 🎃 👻 Lily’s Fright Fest – collect pieces, complete puzzles, unlock spooky suits!

Hi all!

Feeling ready for Halloween? 👀 Starting October 21, you can dive into Lily’s Fright Fest and start collecting pieces to unlock a whole lineup of spooky new avatar suits.

Here's how it works:

•Hit your daily lesson goal and you’ll get a mystery chest! Your goal can change from day to day, so check the event hub to see what you need to do.
•Open your chest to reveal one random piece from the collection of 45. If you keep getting duplicates, don't despair – collect 5 duplicates and we'll automatically trade them in for a piece you don't already have.
•Each piece helps complete a puzzle. Collect all 9 pieces in a puzzle to unlock a new suit. Finish all five puzzles and you'll get a limited-edition Halloween suit plus 3,000 gems! 🤑

If patience isn't your thing, you can also grab pieces directly with gems (regional and/or age restrictions apply). Once Fright Fest begins for you, the countdown is on: you’ll have 30 days to collect everything.
And one last spooky warning: the grand prize is a limited-time treat that won’t return so grab it while you can before it vanishes into the night. 🎃
Happy haunting, happy collecting, and let us know what you think below! 👻

Constructive Criticism Having to click through 14 screens after a lesson is terrible UX

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

4.0k Upvotes

Honestly, I find myself significantly less likely to do another lesson after having to click through so much rubbish.

Edit to provide more context about what I'm complaining about:

To start with, I'm in favour of gamification. That's what duolingo has historically done really well. I think they are ruining the gamification by thoughtlessly piling on features, leading many users to cease to care about any of them. For instance, I now care less about badges because they are drowned out by a sea of other things.

As others have said in this thread, it feels like independent developers were tasked with building out features without ever thinking about what the experience would be like when they are combined.

Good gamification doesn't feel like never-ending screens. This just encourages the user to click through them as quickly as possible without reading them properly. A couple of screens are great and I think it's only gotten out of hand in the last months. Even if it was just capped at 4 or 5 screens that would be fine, showing different screens each day could also mix things up.

A skip button would also be great.

The rest of the information that wasn't presented in screens could just appear as notification bubbles or something to in the main UI. Many people would probably go check the notifications - but when there's even a small bit of actively looking for the information yourself it makes the experience quite different.

Constructive Criticism Not sure I understand why they hide the upcoming lesson types now

Post image
183 Upvotes

I always like seeing what lessons are coming up ahead…Sometimes I’ll even push myself a little bit on a given day to get to a story or the radio show because I really enjoy those lessons. I don’t understand the pedagogy behind this decision to hide upcoming lessons. I don’t see a value add here.

Look at this new Duolingo feature New update hides upcoming activities / lessons

I already reported this to the dev team. The latest update hides the upcoming activities on the path, and I really hate it.

Has anyone else gotten this update? What do you think about it?

General Discussion Duolingo improved so much and it helps a ton as a companion to other study sources.

Duolingo has been the most successful source for me for vocabulary memorization and, believe it or not, grammar tuning. Yes, it doesn’t teach grammar but it helps a lot if you’re using another source to study.

I see a lot of criticism like ‘oohhh, I have to click 3 times when I finish a lesson’, then when you check the thread you see that other apps are being promoted.

In my experience, Duolingo has improved so much and I appreciate the development work. There are some issues for sure and I do notice that their teams work to fix them.

The free version of Duolingo has a bad ads experience for sure. At the same time, there’s no completely free app that provides as much as Duolingo does. If you can’t afford the Super subscription, try to find a group and share the cost.

I’m not affiliated with Duolingo or any of their partners. Just noticed the amount of apps promoted under the guise of complaints and thought I’d share my 2 cents.

General Discussion Pricing changed several dollars from just yesterday? Dynamic Pricing?

• Upvotes

I was planning on getting a family plan, got some people together, checked the prices on my desktop last night and it was 9.99/mo for family if you bought the full year, and 7.99 for individual. I know this because on my phone it was 13.99 and 9.99 respectively, and apple charges a big tax so there was a huge discount if I chose to buy on desktop. Now I check the pricing on desktop, and its 12.99/mo for family and 9.99/mo for individual, the individual now exactly the same as buying with the apple tax on my phone. I was dead set on getting this, and now this has significantly damaged my perception of the app. Are they using airline pricing? If I go through with this, now I would have to explain to everyone, "oh actually it's more expensive now?"

Constructive Criticism Unit tests are unreasonably tedious

I really like the idea of unit tests and I was very happy when they were introduced. However they are unreasonably tedious to do so. Because they are so tedious I end up spending much less time on the app.

What makes it bad is:

  1. The typing is unreasonably strict. When I use another word with a similar meaning it is often graded as wrong. Also typo's are unreasonably often counted as wrong.

  2. Its super slow. When you speak it takes a long time to register. When you find out you will not pass the unit and you just want to see the answers this takes 2min or so to do. I just want to see the answers to learn them!!!

Context: I'm level 100-110 in French and I have Pro.

Are you experiencing this as well?

Look at this new Duolingo feature Cool new learning feature

Post image

For all the (honestly deserved) criticism Duolingo is getting for click-bloat, just wanted to point out a new feature I found.

You can now ask Duo questions related to grammar, have it provide vocab for topics you choose, or just explain miscellaneous things such as regional variations. If you ask it for new vocab, it can even dynamically drill you on it for xp.

THIS is a potentially great feature and an example of how AI can enhance learning rather than just increase enshitification. Haven’t played around it with it too much, but will follow up in the comments if I discover anything notably good or bad.

To access it , click the little chat bubble on the task bar.

Constructive Criticism Completed lesson on last energy

Post image
13 Upvotes

(Click image to see progress bar and energy)

I did a radio show lesson and completed it using all of my energy… I clearly completed it and got to the end. But since I ran out of energy after I answered the last question, it won’t allow me to collect any XP and it won’t count the lesson as complete.

Can’t tell if this is intentional but it SHOULD allow users to complete lessons with the energy that is given. I can’t help but feel this is another way to push people into spending gems or buying subscriptions.
