For whatever reason, the moment in your fic that got the biggest upset reaction from your readers (not just in a hated way, but also from like heavy angst and things like that).

I'm a firm believer in people being able to write whatever they want. If a Black Trans Lesbian wants to write a fanfic where Elena Gilbert has a thressome with the Salvatore brothers, power to them! My post is mostly to point out that I've been writing fanfic for over 20 years as a gay man, and most writers of slash fic out there are women. Some are bisexual or lesbians, but the vast majority are straight and it shows.

I don't want women to stop writing queer fanfic! I really want to be able to pick a fandom I enjoy and delve deep into a fanfic about two hot dudes falling in love. It just kinda skeeves me out how overly invested people are in top/bottom dynamics and how it influences how they write a character. The top is always masculine and dominant, whereas the bottom is femme and submissive: this often happens despite that NOT being the dynamic or characterization in canon.

Strict traditional gender roles and dynamics aren't fun for me when reading them in a het or gen fic, so why are so many invested in perpetuating them in slash fic? It's something I've always pushed against, even when I play into it. I've written femme bottoms plenty of times. It's a thing that happens! But being femme is NOT the same as being submissive, and a femme father is not a mother figure to his child. (This dynamic is also why I avoid MPREG like the plague, but that's not something I'm going to run into often sans tag.)

Because I'm actually a queer man writing fanfic about queer people, whether they're queer in canon or not, I feel like I need to represent a wide diversity of queer people. Femme power bottoms, butch verse bisexuals, scheming dom tops, masculine bottom stalkers who become serial killers, a psychotic bisexual misandrist once, and even a Black trans woman who fell in love with the aforementioned butch verse bisexual whilst they were on an adventure investigating his dead female fiance who tried to murder his insane ex-boyfriend. There are so many different types of queer people there and it seems most often that people can't conceive of how to write queer cis men without putting them into a heterosexual mold. Have any other queer fanfic writers noticed this? Have any straight ones?

I got this plot bunny last year, and I started working on it in ernest some time this year. I've learned my strength is one-shots, but this was a chaptered story. You know how it is with plot bunnies that won't leave you alone. Therefore, I was reading writing craft and resource books to learn more. I was still struggling mightily with the story.

Today, I had a major breakthrough. I was spitballing ideas for a title, saying different things outloud, and I came up with the best title. It's just so perfect that I can't believe it, and it ties everything in the story together. I was gushing over how much I love the title when I said, "The core of the story is about love." Bam! Breakthrough. I actually teared up since I had been struggling and the breakthough was so perfect and wonderful and now everything is falling into place. There are three loves (MC and the lack of love from his parents, the love between the MC and his husband, and the love the MC has for his yet-to-born daughter). What makes that more special is that those three loves fall into the usual three act arc of storytelling.

I can see a whole aerial view of the story now! Wow. The theme of love is perfect for me as a writer too. I can hardly believe this is where I am now with this WIP. I am just so proud, happy, and excited! I can't wait to write the whole story.

This is something I've been wondering about for a while! I tag wrangle on a non-ao3 archive and people tag stuff like "bad humor" or "attempt at XYZ" or "this sucks don't read it" all the time and I don't really understand the point? It's just telling people not to bother reading your work. Like, these are all subjective, and it's shooting yourself in the foot. If someone thinks you suck, lampshading whatever criticism you might get won't actually help. Idk it just confuses me, and I always get really sad seeing those tags :(

edit for clarity: i dont think it's an indicator of fic quality, nor am i particularly annoyed by it. i mean, i feel bad, but mostly in a tag wrangling context because you don't see the fic, just the part where they're being self-deprecating. i dont think its a very smart thing to do but im not like, judging people who do it or anything. sorry, i didnt realize anything i said came across like i had these opinions

Because people talk all the time about the struggles of finding a good rare pair. But I think what is actually harder is finding a fic of a super common pair that has the top and bottom the opposite of how the Fandom for some reason chose that Jason Todd is a bottom.

Where I want a fan fiction of him toping Roy. Which should be my god given write to read.

Because these are 2 close angsty men who are friends and teammates. There should be 10000s of fics of them fucking eachother as per the rules of the internet. And there are. Its just that most people only tag the ship. Its rare to tag who is top and who is bottom. Which makes it impossible to find the fic where jason is a top.

I am someone who reads anime fandoms, and a lot try to add Japanese titles. This is great, but as someone who speaks Japanese (not native but many years speaking), I notice when it is direct google translation. Normally I don't say anything but sometimes the translation is so direct that it doesn't make sense or does not have the same meaning in English.

Do you think it's appropriate to comment on it? Not to comment? Maybe indirect comment of "Hey I noticed a translation error, could I message you my ideas to fix it?"

I'm writing a oneshot that depicts a phone call between the two main characters through the entire fic, and it's making me realize just how much I rely on shared physical space to convey a sense of emotional intimacy between characters and the feelings of the non-POV character.

Here, A is the POV character, speaking to their longtime friend B. B is aware of their romantic feelings for A but is trying to move on (with middling success, as this fic attempts to demonstrate). A is not aware of their romantic feelings toward B. The conversation starts out lighthearted, but eventually slides into a more intimate exchange about their respective relationship struggles before they're interrupted by the arrival of someone on A's side. This cuts the intimate portion of the conversation short, and the fic ends soon after, with a lingering sense of something left unsaid.

Obviously, dialogue is significant here, and I think I've done okay with naturally transitioning the casual part of the conversation into the more serious part. (Though I wouldn't say no to advice on that, either!) But upon reading the scene back, the more intimate part doesn't ring authentically intimate. I think a big part of this is because B is essentially a disembodied voice; I exclusively write in 3rd person limited, but I've never written it without being able to use body language/references to the shared setting/etc to nod to how the non-POV characters are feeling and cultivate a certain "atmosphere." I've inserted a weighty pause or some background noise where appropriate, but I'm kind of at a loss for what else to do. It feels especially critical to get this right because the phone call is the whole of the fic.

I’m about 20,000 words in on a fic i’m currently writing, and I’m really struggling to figure out how avoid making it seem as though the romance aspect has come from nowhere. Most of the story up til now has kind of just been about bringing the two leads together, character A gets injured protecting character B, and is then forced to look after them. I’ve started to introduce small signs of physical attraction but I’m completely lost on how to push things further in terms of actual romantic feelings and development? So much of the story thus far has kind of mostly been life or death scenarios and forced proximity so I have no idea how to make them bond?
Any advice?

So, i got a simple basis so far, plus a general idea of how I kinda want the first bit to go, but im running into issues about making restrictions on the power system. Any ideas or suggestions in general would be very helpful and appreciated. So, its two expressions of energy. First there is positive energy, somthing found within every living being. From the smallest ant, to a great white, everything has positive energy. Some have it more then others. Have you ever met someone who seems to be really good at domthing, for no good reason. Mabey its a guy who is good at math, might be a girl who is better then seemingly everyone she meets in baseball, or just someone stronger then most, despite not even training or practicing. That is an expression of positive energy. But it comes in many other forms as well, ever hit a lucky break? Or just had a feeling that the roulette wheel would hit black? That might just be positive energy. Now, a little at a time, this energy seeps out. Nothing wrong with that happening, just a normal part of life. A bad luck streak? Have a bad day? Mabey a bad person has somthing needlessly good happen? A small out of positive energy simply spilling out. But, this leads to a simple question. What if someone... or somthing was able to gather this energy?

The someone who can gather it must meet two conditions. The first is they have had thier positive energy drained. Not simply to a low point, but emptied. To the point of no return. A bad luck streak isn't enough. Near death experience isn't enough. Losing everyone you've ever loved, is getting closer. But lets not dwindle on the semantics too much. The second thing one would need in order to gather positive energy is be aware of it. A much easier, and harder task. As learning about positive energy is not sonthing you simply ask about. But, ask the correct person, the correct question, and you will learn the answers.

A much better question you should be asking, what happens when nobody gathers this positive energy. Well the larger the amount gathered in one spot, the faster it turns. Onto somthing more sour. Negitive energy. You may find that negitive energy is far stronger then positive. Many times more, so much infact that a drop of negitive energy is worth more the an ocean of postive energy. If you find some first, the power you feel is emense. So much that it may kill you. But there are things it certainly won't kill. Beings from a small tear is the bounds between our world, and the absolute. Some beings from this rift will absorb this negitive energy, and it may cause a few issues for those around it. Ranging from a bad day, to an extream loss of life. The nature of these mindless beasts is clear, feed on negitive energy, to become even more powerful. The job of those who choose to fight them off is simple, destroy these beings, and seal up the hole to the absolute by absorbing the negitive energy into your own body. Death may be a result of this, but if you successfully absorb negitive energy once, it is unlikely to happen.

So I dont really know where to go from here, this is the part where you all come in. Pretty please can I get some constructive criticism and help in how I can expand on this. thank you all very much

I'm looking for a MHA fic where Deku is the headless horseman, Eri is a banshee, and there's another kid who's the carriage.

It's based off The Headless Horseman myth so there [the horseman]+[a banshee]+[the ride].

It’s also a crossover universe with maybe Marvel, not sure. I remember they develop spells using the system. It’s a modern AU with Stucky, Clintasha, and the Howling Commandos. Bucky is raising his nephew Kyle after his sister/BIL died. His best friend Natasha met pediatrician Clint and in present time they have a daughter Natalia (?) same age as his nephew.

Steve has just moved in down the street and on Halloween, Bucky and the kids go up to his house where Steve answers the door having obviously been crying. He had been estranged from fiancée Peggy but she just died so he’s pretty torn up over it. He says something like “It’s October already?” (which I remember was part of the summary too) He gives them a bunch of art supplies because he doesn’t have candy.

Bucky and Steve start becoming friends, Steve gives Kyle art lessons in exchange for Bucky teaching him a language, and all the Howlies come to visit for Thanksgiving.

Bucky also makes a lot of homemade pizza.

I feel with all those details it’s bound to turn up but fingers crossed I just don’t know how to search for it properly. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Just in general, it doesn't have to be the final battle of a series or anything. Just think like a group of soldiers or bandits. For example, if the fight is melee heavy how much detail do you love going into? Does it matter if the character is supposed to be a slow brute or a lightning-fast assassin? Do you always start off with a tense meeting, where both fighters sizing each other up? Giving context to the fight or is there sometimes fights where you just have it happen as a snap reaction because heroes and bad guys don't need context, they just exist to fight each other.

If you're into range heavy fights, like with archery/gunnery, do you always make sure to give characters reactions to near misses? Does the environment always reflect where you'd hope a character would at least have a chance or does it reflect a desperate CQC sequence that makes it near impossible for an archer/gunner to operate?

When you start the fight scene, do you always write the ending of the fight scene first? (Top-down method?) the beginning? (Bottom-up method) or do you love a good sandwich? (Have a beginning and ending written but then fill the in-between. My favorite method myself, because it means if I need to change the end, I have at least a destination of what I want to reach.)

Do you listen to music that would fit the scene. Such as if it's brutal and gore filled is it time fire up some DOOM music...or since its recent BOLTGUN Music. (Mick Gordon is awesome for really setting up a rip-roaring good time.) or if the fight is technical, do you set up finer music notes. For me, right now, in the current fight I'm writing I listen to Hortus Regis Alti (Ace combat games always have great music.)

This is just out of curiosity, if you want to provide examples of really great (in your opinions) of what you wrote as great fight scenes and such. I'd love to see them; I'm currently getting ready to write some fight scenes and just want some inspiration from fellow authors.
