Meta [Meta] Please review our subreddit’s resources on the sidebar and wiki to help with your posts here

For extra accessibility and convenience, r/betareaders is pinning this post with a link to the wiki: https://www.reddit.com/r/BetaReaders/wiki/index/

Additionally, you may find these comprehensive resources helpful in creating your own blurb or synopsis

If you are aiming for traditional publishing or self publishing, writing a query letter blurb will not only help tell potential betas what they can expect, but they also show you the core components of your story upfront and often helps with DIY revision

Many people prefer detailed information to help them decide on taking on a beta read, but the subreddit currently strictly enforces 2 key pieces of information in posts as some people want more privacy and will DM them to respondents

Please do take note of r/betareaders rules, which are found on the sidebar to the right, and are also expanded on in the wiki. The sidebar also has clickable links to templates that give suggestions for information beta readers would like to know before responding. The less you provide, the less enticing your post is. Conversely, extremely long posts also reduce likelihood in responses

And again, this is a fully free subreddit that does not permit services or requests for money in any form. It is also anti-AI generated works and pro-human

The wiki will have minor updates in future, and so will the comprehensive resources linked

Best wishes for your writing, revising, and beta reading!

Discussion [Discussion] r/BetaReaders check-in series! Share how your WIP is going, or how your beta reading is going, ask questions, and connect with more writers and readers!

Hello r/BetaReaders!

Who else can’t believe it’s October already? Time flies!

Here’s this month’s prompt in the spirit of Halloween season: have you ever felt chills or thrills from beta feedback or books you’ve beta read? Whether it’s from how accurate the feedback was or how much more you realized you needed to revise than you initially thought?

Welcome to our tenth monthly check-in thread!

These monthly pinned post aims to help the community connect with other writers and betas!

Share how your WIP is going, or how your current beta read is going, or other relatable beta reading topics in this thread!

This is a great thread to talk about writing, updates, accountability, trends, vents, and more.

It is not the right thread to post first pages as there’s another pinned thread for that, but you can link to your beta post if you wish.

Do NOT advertise any beta/editor services here, and no free samples to later ask for payment are allowed. You can try r/hireaneditor or r/freelance_forhire instead.

We also ask that self promotion of completed works do not contain links. Mentioning success is completely fine!

And we’d like to take this opportunity to remind people that works generated with AI, and AI-generated feedback is not allowed here, either. r/writingwithAI or r/betareadersforAI are better subreddits for that.

And because scammers are now targeting GDocs: please DM them and not leave them up on the sub publicly to avoid harassment

I’d also like to note that we have additional flairs available to help people know what specialty you have: traditional publishing, self-publishing, and fanfic. Please consider using them to help people match with you.

Also, it’s best to subscribe to our sub before commenting or posting to help avoid Reddit’s filters sending your content into the spam queue

Please ensure you comment in good faith and do not break any other r/betareaders rules.

Thank you, and happy writing/reading/editing/beta matching!

>100k [Complete] [105K] [Medieval/coming of age fanasty] Glass weavers

Hello everyone! It's a medieval-coming of age fantasy written as a stand alone with the potential for a sequel. It is fairly straightforward as this was to be easy to digest for a first book debut.

The blurb/premise

Vixen an apprentice weaver moved to the town of Feathersong with her adoptive father, in the hopes of eventually succeeding her father's talents. But she is quickly set on a new path when she accidentally starts uncovering the secrets that lay beneath the sweet village facade.

After a chance encounter with a man suspected to be apart of a cult Vixen quickly has to decide who to trust, and who must be protected. With the other apprentices of Feathersong they discover a dangerous magic in the kingdom, one that could save them or put them all in grave danger.

With the shadows tormenting her at every corner, Vixen has to overcome her fears and discover what is lurking beneath the surface of the village, before it comes to get her, or for the people she cares about most.

In depth summary (mild spoilers)

Vixen moved to Feathersong with her adoptive father Wolf, due to a request from the head priest Eliza who sought Wolf's skills. Upon arriving and meeting the other weavers apprentices Unbrine, Dante, and Thorn, Vixen is thrown into a world she was not prepared for.

After she is attacked by a strange man she is left reeling wondering why, along with some strange new powers. Thanks to Unbrine and Dante they discover that a mysterious cult has been operating in Feathersong, desperate for answers Vixen sets out to discover more.

She is terrified that she will be attacked again, or worse her father whom she loves more then anything. And in doing so, she and the other apprentices uncover a dangerous magic, one that was better left to rot. Vixen has to keep a dark secret from everyone she loves and learn to protect them from a distance before she makes a grave mistake that could cost everyone.

Feedback:

I would love advice on characters, pacing, plot structure, prose and world building! Any and all feedback is welcome, absolutely no ai tools please. This is my first full attempt at a book with the intention of publishing it, it is a simple story to be easy to digest.

Thanks for taking the time to read! Feel free to dm or comment!

80k [Complete] [89,000] [Memoir] Serrated Love: A Story About OCD

Hi all. I'm a first-time author self-publishing a memoir called Serrated Love. It follows a relationship from its early days through a spiral of anxiety into an OCD episode, a psychiatric admission, and recovery. The tone is honest, with some dark humour.

Looking for: 3 to 5 readers who'll read the full manuscript over 4 to 6 weeks and answer a short set of questions (where it dragged, where it confused, which scenes landed, how the ending felt). I'm not looking for line edits or typo hunting.

Content warning: graphic and detailed distressing thoughts involving harm to others, suicidal ideation, a psych ward stay, and explicit sexual content in multiple scenes. Please only volunteer if you're comfortable with that. You're free to stop reading whenever you like.

Format: PDF / Google Doc (will send via DM). Deadline: November 30, 2026.

Happy to swap: I'll read a chapter or a short piece of yours in return if you'd like.

If you're interested, comment or message me and I'll send a short sign-up form. Thank you!

60k [Complete] [64k] [Sci-Fi] Soul Star

• Upvotes

Hi all,

First time poster and first time requesting a read.

Soul Star is about a grieving fifteen-year-old in the burning 1978 Bronx who teams up with a talking squirrel carrying a soldier’s soul from the future to stop an alien fire, and prove that destiny doesn’t decide who he becomes.

I wrote screenplays before and now taking a stab at a novel, naturally this story was one of my scripts.

Feedback: Does the story flow naturally? What confuses you? Do I get too wordy or "prose-y?" And any general feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Happy to swap! Happy to do a test run of a prologue and/or first chapter to see if it's something you would like to read.

Feel free to DM! Thanks!

90k [Complete][96k][Literary Coming of Age Fiction] Summers Gone By

Every summer from 1992 to 1996, the same families return to Blue Woods, a small coastal vacation community with a dock, a treehouse and their rituals that feel like they'll last forever. Leah, now 41, looks back on those five summers with Matthew and Jacob: the mixtapes, the sand dollars, the games that get a little smaller (as they get a little bigger) each year.
As the world around them changes, the summers, like all things, begin to end, and so does childhood itself. Some changes they see coming. Others they never see at all.

Told in Leah's adult voice, woven through with scenes from each summer, Summers Gone By is about growing up, the things we take that aren't ours, and how a single moment can split an entire life into before and after.

Details:
Prologue, 14 chapters, 7 interludes, epilogue
Content warnings: drowning, death of young people, grief, bullying, abuse, alcoholism
What I'm looking for: Big-picture reactions. Where you got bored or confused, which characters you cared about, and whether the ending lands or not. I have a questionnaire if anybody would like that kind of structure, but honest gut reactions are just as welcome truly.
Timeline: about 4–6 weeks, happy to share chapter by chapter or whatever works best for you.
Happy to swap
Comment or DM me if you're interested. Thanks!

>100k [In Progress] [140k] [Dark Gothic Romantasy] The Lies We Worship

• Upvotes

Hi all!

Author here looking for alpha readers for my novel The Lies We Worship.

THE LIES WE WORSHIP is a dark gothic romantasy about forbidden love, stolen divinity, and the terrible cost of uncovering the truth.

Back of book excerpt

The dead are restless. The heavens are silent. And the Church is lying.

When Thalia’s life becomes entangled with forces she was never meant to understand, she finds herself caught between a faith built on secrets and a mysterious man whose devotion may be as dangerous as the truths he refuses to tell.

As the boundary between life and death begins to fracture, Thalia must decide who to trust before everything she believes in comes undone.

Feedback

Looking primarily for first impressions, questions, comments, concerns. This is a first read out to
the public after my trusted circle. I’m looking to gain a small circle of readers to help with feedback before heading towards publishing!

PDF or Google Doc copies available in chapter chunks.

Please be responsive, genuine, and a little kind. This is near and dear to my heart and my first time pursuing public opinion on my writing.

xoxo, Scarlett

Novelette [In Progress] [8k] [Paranormal Fantasy] LOBOS DE ACERO: El alfa que no recuerda

It's a paranormal fantasy featuring werewolves, military mystery, and slow-burn romance.

I've published the prologue and first two chapters (approximately 8,000 words), and I'd love some honest first impressions!

I'm mainly wondering: Does the opening grab your attention? Are the characters interesting? Would you keep reading?

Please DM me if you're interested, and I'll share the story link privately.

Thank you! 🐺❤️

Short Story [In Progress] [2,880K] [Contemporary Romance] Inherited Shadows, Ch. 1, 2: a grumpy ex-Army captain, a small-town bar, and a very bad first meeting

Editing the body since I can't edit the title, word count is 2880 without 'K' - apologies, I'm new to Reddit :)

Hi guys. I would really appreciate a brutally honest assessment of my first two chapters. Can you help me?

It’s a contemporary romance with a dual POV: a former Army captain who owns a small-town bar with his injured best friend, and a woman whose path leads straight to him. Chapter 1 is his POV and Chapter 2 is hers.

What I’d most like to know:

  • Does Chapter 1 hook you? Where did you want to keep reading, and where did you start to lose interest?
  • Do the two POV voices feel distinct from each other?
  • Does Chapter 2 keep the momentum?

Content notes: mild profanity, and a physical altercation played for humor.

English is my second language, so please flag anything that sounds awkward or unnatural.

Please DM me and I’ll send you the Google Doc link

I'm happy to swap chapters if you would like feedback too! :)

80k [In Progress] [88K] [Portal Fantasy Romance] Through the Barren Moongate

Hello fellow readers/writers!

Hoping to find a beta reader who loves fantasy, and also gives good constructive feedback. Looking for general likability, but also notes on flow and plot issues.

Up for a trade, but would like to start just trading the first 3 chapters to see if we are a good match.

Back of book blurb:

Cassidy is an unattached woman doing her best to move through life the only way she really knows how, by instinct and impulse.

Swiping right and casual dates take a sharp turn when she agrees to a weekend trip and is thrust into a world that shouldn’t exist, rebuilt from the ashes after a virus has left its women unable to reproduce. A world held together by controlled magic and a fragile balance, reliant on a full moon to open a gate between their world and hers.

As the next full moon draws near, something in Cassidy begins to stir, the magic settling in her blood pulling at her thoughts, her memories, and the thin thread still binding her to home. Her only ally in this place is her designated match Caelric, who has spent his life choosing isolation and quiet rebellion.

Now Cassidy must navigate a society that wants to claim her, a man who refuses to cage her, and a moon that seems to be waiting for her decision. Stay and fall into a world that will reshape her, or fight her way back and risk the consequences not just for herself, but for an entire civilization that may not survive without sacrifice.

TRIGGERS: Violence, Abduction/kidnapping, murder, trafficking, Infertility

90k [Complete][90K][Queer (MM) Contemporary Fiction] Outsiders, Ingrained

Hi there!

I'm looking for beta readers for my complete 90k queer contemporary fiction. Happy to swap for literary/contemporary fiction, fantasy, or sci fi. I would appreciate beta readers who have experience reading romance (especially because I do not have much), but do not expect a genre-romance.

Description:

After a relapse leaves him with nowhere to go except the house of his sister he no longer speaks to and her daughter he's never met, Adrian returns to the site of something he's tried twenty years to get away from. He is quickly approached by Finn, a man in his twenties both completely uninvolved in and inseparable from what happened in Adrian's past. As the two grow closer everything, including each of the men, threatens to unravel.

Outsiders, Ingrained is a character-driven novel about addiction, being believed, and finding things (and people) to stay for. It is a close third-person mostly dual POV, alternating between Adrian and Finn.

Lots of content warnings that I can share as requested, but nothing very graphic.

What I'm looking for:

I am mostly looking for pacing, if any sections are repetitive, and character consistency. Where are readers hooked, and where are they very much not? If possible, a turnaround time of 6-8 weeks would be ideal.

DM me to discuss, and for the document.

90k [Complete] [93k] [Dark Fantasy] A ballad of broken wings

Hello!
I’m in search of a few beta readers, probably 2-3.

The blurb is:
“Maevis is a young woman born into slavery on a continent ruled by the Fae. She is the court songstress and spends her nights warming the bed of the crown prince, with whom she has a complicated relationship. As her friend and fellow slave, Rion, finds himself drawn into a growing rebellion, Maevis is forced to break out of her gilded cage.”

I would prefer you to be 18+ since some topics in the novel are one the darker side (think emotional/physical/sexual abuse, death, child loss) etc.

And I would LOVE if you’re able to start rather fast since I’ve already lost some time with other readers who don’t reply anymore. If you start this and for whatever reason decide to or cannot finish, just letting me know.

DM me if you’re interested. I’m happy to provide the first few chapters at first before you commit fully.

50k [Complete][51,502][Fantasy] The Last Hybrids: The Prime Gauntlet

When students start turning up dead at Metropolis Academy, nineteen-year-old Zack Argent starts investigating. The trail leads to Tyler Knox, a bullied non-bender who has stumbled upon an ancient weapon of terrifying power — and the soul of history's most dangerous killer waiting inside it.

Zack and his best friend Rirek must stop a resurrection nearly a thousand years in the making before their city becomes a graveyard.

The Last Hybrids: The Prime Gauntlet is Book 1 of a planned five-book fantasy series. I've been working on this story for years, and Book 1 now has a completed draft. I'm looking for beta readers to give me an outside perspective on the opening three chapters before I move further with revisions and publishing plans.

Details:

  • Book 1 is complete.
  • Initial reading request: first three chapters, approximately 10,250 words.
  • Genre: Fantasy.

What I'm looking for: Honest reactions to the opening. Did the story grab your attention? Which characters stood out to you? How did the pacing feel? Were there any confusing moments? What did you enjoy, and what could be improved? Most importantly, after Chapter 3, would you want to read Chapter 4?

I have an anonymous questionnaire for anyone who prefers structured feedback, but honest gut reactions are just as welcome.

Timeline: Ideally 2–3 weeks for the opening chapters, but I'm flexible.

Happy to swap.

If you're interested, please comment or DM me, and I'll share the view-only document privately. Thanks!

Please comment or message me directly if you'd like access to the form!

Story Blurb:

Sythia has spent ten years away from the only homeland she's ever known, wandering the world with little more than a horse, a pigeon, and the burdens of a past she'd rather leave behind.

But when word reaches her that the Blossom Queen of Thaletiah is holding a competition to find a partner in royal duty, Sythia knows she cannot stay away any longer. With a hundred kilometres separating her from home and the woman she once loved, she sets out on a journey that could change everything.

Her destination is Thaletiah. Her goal is to win the heart of its queen. Her greatest uncertainty is whether thee queen even remembers her.

For Avelani is no longer the young woman Sythia left behind. She is a queen, with a kingdom to lead and a future to build. And when the two women finally meet again, Sythia must face the possibility that the love she has carried across a decade may exist only in her memories.

Looking for critique on pace, story beats, and how to better the structure of my book.

I'm having issues with my computer, so I may look at your feedback every few days. If you were to leave a critique on my work, I'd love for you to message me, so I know to check the document.

[Discussion] Visiting the awesome prehistoric caves in France earlier this year inspired me to write a novel about them. I'm looking for a few advance copy readers. If you're interested, please DM me. Book description below.

SHE'S FROM TWO WORLDS. SHE CAN ONLY LIVE IN ONE.

Fifteen-year-old Anna thinks she’s just exploring a cave in France — until she touches a prehistoric handprint and wakes up fifteen thousand years in the past. Stranded among hunters who seem to recognize her, she learns the truth: she was born here.

When the wall opens again, Anna must make an impossible choice. Go back to her own time. Or stay with the Ice Age family she never knew she had. She can’t have both.

Novella [Complete] [19k] [Memoir] Looking for a French reader for my memoir

Hello, my name is Sabahat Komonaj. I wrote a memoir called "When All I Had Left Was Faith." It is my true story about faith, healing, and prayer. When I was a young mother of five, paralysis struck my body, and God healed me — I learned to walk again.

I have a French draft of the book (about 19,000 words). I need a native French reader to check that it reads naturally in French. This is free — I only ask for your honest help. Please send me a message if you can help.

Thank you, and God bless you. — Sabi —Excerpt from Chapter 1:

Il y a des moments où l'on n'a plus aucune force. On ne sait pas si son corps va se rétablir ni comment on va prendre soin de ses enfants. C'est là que la suite de mon histoire a commencé.

Parfois, les gens pensent que la foi vient quand tout va bien. Pour moi, la foi est venue quand il ne me restait presque plus rien.

The novel is about a young man who is afflicted by a curse that outlaws him, and gives him a mark that is impossible to hide. His goal is to find somewhere safe to live, while he desperately longs for his home and to return to the life he had before. All while a inhumanly strong man is searching for people with the curse, because he wants to prevent a prophecy from happening.

If someone would please beta read this, that would be awesome.

50k [complete] [56k] [drama/romance] What You gave me

Here is a super super rough draft of the blurb (I am rlly bad at writing them so I will probably hire someone):

Molly’s life was perfectly planned out, school, uni, dating, career, husband, baby… but two years post a devastating car accident she is unfulfilled, her family either dead or estranged, and unable to reimagine her life now that she is an incomplete paraplegic. In a panicked moment she calls a sexworker.

Jackson is a nineteen year old having sex with people to feed himself and fill a deep void rather than because it’s what he wants. He has a terrible roommate and a family who abandoned him. With an undiagnosed learning disability he struggles to find a way out.

Jackson and Molly have a strained first interaction that turns into a deep codependent friends with benefits arrangement, together they work on their family issues, education, self depreciation, and work hard to build each other up.

Some trigger warnings:

- F slur

- R slur

- Sex scenes

- Self harm

- Depression

- Disability (wheelchair user)

- Sex work

- Drugs and alcohol

- Body dysmorphia

I'm a bit stuck on any major changes that need to be made. It has not had line or copy editing yet. There are likely typos and repetitive language (which you are more than welcome to point out) but it will go through more editing for that.

>100k [Complete] [101k] [Dark Gothic Romance] The Serpent's Omen: a Salem tarot reader, a Boston crime family, and a serpent sworn to guard her

Looking for 3 to 5 beta readers who love dark romance.

Blurb

Cassia Rhys doesn't believe in fate. She just sells it, reading tarot for tourists in Salem and taking a little white pill every night to keep one dream away: stone stairs, black water, a faceless man coming for her. The night she forgets the pill, a touch from her favorite Thursday customer sends a warning out of her in a voice that isn't hers. Don't take the river road. His driver dies there. The quiet old man runs the Draghetti crime family, and his son Evander wants to know what she is.

About the book: dark Gothic romance, Book One of a series, about 101,000 words. Dual first person (Cas and Evander), slow burn that turns explicit. Ends on a cliffhanger. Comps: Haunting Adeline, Two Twisted Crowns, Rebecca, Crimson Peak.

Excerpt (opening of Chapter One)

Something warm slides over my lip.

I touch it, and my fingertips come away dark in the gray light. Blood. It's on the pillowcase, a bloom the size of my fist. Copper and salt.

I have never had a nosebleed in my life.

I sit up too fast, and the room tilts. There's a pressure behind my eyes, like a thumb pushing from the inside. Migraine, I tell myself. The radiator has clanked all week. People get nosebleeds. It doesn't mean anything.

On the nightstand, the little orange bottle sits exactly where I left it. Cap on. I closed the shop last night, walked home in the rain, and fell into bed with my boots still on.

I don't like sleep. I don't like what waits for me inside it.

These days I swallow a little white pill before bed so there's nothing to tell. The only nights it fails me are the nights I forget it. Those are the nights the Dream gets in, and it's always the same one. Bay leaves. Cold salt air, though there's no sea anywhere in it. A woman singing low and a little off-key. A trembling hand closing my fingers around a leaf. Don't let him find you. Stone stairs going down into a dark that breathes, and a man at the bottom with no face, climbing, calling my name.

I always wake before he reaches me. That's the rule.

Last night he broke it. He took my wrist, and his fingers closed like a lock, and on his smallest finger there was a plain gold ring, heavy and old, catching a light that wasn't there.

Content warnings: murder, gun violence and blood; kidnapping and captivity; stalking and an obsessive love interest; organized crime; loss of a parent and foster care; a stroke and grief; seizures and nosebleeds; reliance on sleep medication; explicit sexual content.

Feedback I'd love: where you couldn't put it down, where you drifted, whether the romance and the danger land, and whether Evander works for you. Questions are built into the file; answer as much or as little as you like.

Timeline: about 5 weeks. Word file or Kindle file, your choice. Feedback in chunks is welcome.

Critique swap: happy to swap with anyone writing romance, romantasy, Gothic or dark fiction.

Comment or DM me and tell me a dark romance you loved recently!

70k [Complete] [71k] [Science Fiction] Pioneer

Hi all. I’ve been carrying this story around in my head for over ten years and finally got it onto the page this year. It’s on draft 3.1 now and I need fresh eyes before I start draft 4.

Blurb:

Frank Bell gave nine years of his life to the engine that took the first crews to Mars. Then the sky fell, the Panel turned down his next idea, and Frank retreated to a workshop on an industrial estate with a kettle, a schoolroom robot called Dave and an AI called Scarlett.

There, out of a second-hand delivery drone, he built a faster-than-light drive.

On Thursday, a fifteen-kilometre asteroid will pass closer to Earth than some of our satellites. With every telescope in the world pointed at it, Frank is going to launch into the middle of the broadcast and prove he was right.

He has promised to be back for breakfast.

About it: British sci-fi that starts a little funny and gets darker. One man, a ship’s AI called Scarlett and a lot of bad decisions. If you like The Martian or Moon, you might get on with it.

What I’m after: big picture stuff. Where you got bored, what didn’t make sense, whether the ending lands. I’m not worried about typos at this stage.

Format: EPUB, works on Apple Books or Kindle. Around six weeks to read, but no pressure.

Swap: I’m happy to read something of yours in return, especially sci-fi.

Comment or DM if you’re interested. Cheers!

70k [Complete] [73K] [YA Mystery] The Pyrite Sisters

Hey all, looking for a few beta readers for my 73k YA mystery novel. Think National Treasure but with Wednesday Addams and Veronica Mars as sisters doing the investigation.

Millicent is a socially awkward but brilliant fifteen-year-old with a knack for forensics. Her sixteen-year-old sister Valeria lives life seeking rules in need of breaking and people in need of interrogating. Raised by their FBI agent father, the girls are brilliant detectives, and horrendous siblings.

But when a mysterious riddle buried by the town’s founder shortly before his suspicious death nearly two centuries ago is unearthed  beneath their school, the sisters set aside their differences for answers. Combining their opposing skillsets, the girls begin to unravel a puzzle that leads them through hidden clues, a forgotten town history, and a decades-old conspiracy someone seems all too willing to kill to protect.

The novel is told in alternating chapters from each sister’s perspective and combines puzzle-solving, dry humor, sibling banter, and a character-driven mystery with light historical elements.

Looking for input on the narratives, propulsion, pacing and overall character appeal, particularly in the first third of the manuscript. If this sounds like something you would be into, hit me up!

Thanks.

>100k [Complete] [100k] [Romantic Fantasy] The Highest Treason

Hello!

I am currently finishing up revisions for my romantic fantasy novel, The Highest Treason. I am looking for beta readers for the first chapter at the moment (3k words), but if anyone is interested in reading forward that would be awesome too. I am also available to do a manuscript swap!

The Highest Treason follows a young woman intent on bringing revolution against a tyrant Emperor. She believes that if she can turn a high ranking member of his court to her cause, she can expose enough of the Empire's dark secrets to win the support of the people. However when her mark defects from his station before she can reach him, she must do whatever she can to find him; before the Emperor's men do.

Feedback I am looking for:

  • First impressions (how well does this work as an opening chapter? does it make you want to keep reading?)
  • World-Building set-up (is there enough info to keep you intrigued, or is it just confusing?)
  • Cohesion and flow (do the events make sense?)
  • Minor grammatical mistakes (not too worried about this at the moment, but if you notice anything glaring do let me know!)

I have been working on this story for a long time, and so it has become a bit hard to see the forest from the trees. I am mostly just looking to see how this chapter reads to someone with fresh eyes. Any help or feedback at all is much appreciated. Please let me know if interested.

Thank you!
