Who went from a Raptor back to regular truck life?

Post image

Do you long for the Raptor life? Would you get another, or one and done? I feel the Raptor is the coolest truck ever made, and in a year or two would love to have one as my next daily driver. I can’t stop thinking about one and want to know if they are that good.

Squeaking Sound Identification

Sorry for the wind noise, but you can easily hear the high pitched squeaking/squealing noise. I am assuming it's just the tires, right? If so, any idea what causes it and what can be done to mitigate it? These are the stock KO2s with 38k miles and plenty of tread life left on them.

New (to me) Raptor R

Finally pulled the trigger on a Raptor R this weekend! I’ve looked at them online for years. I went this weekend “just to look” and wanted to check all of my options so drove a Ranger Raptor and a regular F150 Raptor. Both were very nice but I wanted to drive an R before I made a decision. Found this one Certified, it’s a 2025 with about 23k miles. Roughly 0.015 seconds into the test drive, I knew I was buying it much to the chagrin of my wife lol. I think I made out okay on it too. I got them down to $105k and they got within shouting distance of what Carvana had my trade at. It’s actually the Carbonized Gray from the factory but the original owner wanted Avalanche Gray so it’s wrapped that color.

It’s so much fun to drive but I might spend the next week just sitting in a lawn chair in the garage staring at it.

Welp boys. Time for a new one I guess? Some lady blew through a red light and put my truck in a bad way. Still waiting on insurance to tell me the plan but it’s not looking good.

Living the dream

At 36 years old I can finally say I'm living the dream, the last piece was put in place a few weeks ago.

Traded in my 2018 3.5 super cab with 112k miles, the dealer initially offered 16.5k but talked them up to 20k. Bought a brand new 2026 Raptor.

After a solid break-in at 1200 miles, I took it grouse hunting and hit a few trails at Nemadji state forest and all I can say is holy sh*t this is so fun to off road. Even with my last truck having fox 2.0 coilovers there is NO comparison, completely different league.

Glad I got the rear wheel well liners and rokblokz installed before that trip 😆.. took a solid 12 minutes at the car wash just to get the mud out of the wheel wells.

Next up is window tint. Eventually, I'll need to upgrade the subwoofer since this B&O infinite baffle sub is lacking punch. It's an interesting design and has decent continuous bass but the punch is so underwhelming it actually sounds weird for some songs. That said, I told my wife I wouldn't need to buy any mods if I bought a raptor 😅

Brand new 801a, when mirror auto fold is enabled in the settings, it works once! Then every subsequent time the doors are shut and locked, the mirrors no longer auto fold in….

Shock buzzing

I’ve got a 2020 with right around 55k miles. I recently got the consistent “buzzing” from my left rear shock. I’ve replaced the solenoid and now the shock itself with new parts and it is STILL buzzing. Looking for advice on what to look at next to fix this?

37s vs 35s on 2022 Raptor 802A — worth the upgrade or stick with stock?

planning KMC wheels and trying to decide between keeping 35s or going straight to 37s.
My situation:
2022 Gen 3 Raptor — know it was designed with 37s in mind
Daily driver in LA — mostly street with occasional off-road
Already planning KMC 17" wheels
Want to do one purchase — wheels and tires together
Concerned about MPG hit — already getting ~11-12 MPG in city traffic
My questions:
Is the visual difference between 35s and 37s actually noticeable on a Gen 3?
How much does MPG realistically drop with 37s in daily driving?
Do 37s require a leveling kit on the Gen 3 or do they clear stock height?
Any rubbing issues on stock suspension?
Best 37" tire for mostly street with occasional off-road — leaning Nitto Ridge Grapplers
Would you go 35s or 37s if this is your daily driver?
Already planning paint correction, ceramic coat and tint first — wheels and tires are next on the list.
Appreciate any real world experience from Gen 3 owners. 🤙

I was a bit hesitant but the maintenance record was on point. Coming from a 2019 Subaru STI to this is definitely worlds different but I love it. This thing is WIDE.

2017 Ford Raptor: Mud/Sand vs. Desert Mode – Which Is Best for Soft Sand and Dune Climbing?

Hi everyone,
For the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor, which driving mode is better for driving on soft sand and climbing sand dunes: Mud/Sand or Desert mode?
I’m looking for the best performance, traction, throttle response, and vehicle control, especially on soft sand and steep dune climbs.
Based on your experience with the 2017 Raptor, which mode do you recommend for the best overall performance in the desert?
Thanks in advance!

My new 2025 802a Raptor

Just picked up my brand new 2025 802a Slick
Roof Raptor. Absolutely love it. Rides and looks amazing. Plan to add mudflaps, wheel liners, bed cover, swarf 3rd brake light, and rain guards. Then tune it after first oil change. Plan to keep it for a long time, rack the miles and keep the miles off my built 2024 Denali Duramax.

That being said, I am sadly letting go of my Gen 2 802a Raptor. It’s a 2018 FULLY loaded 802a with ONLY 9k original miles. Also has brand new tires as well if anyone is interested. I’d take $55k for it. Like new. Rides and drives amazing as well. I’ll miss it but don’t need 3 trucks.

Tire shopping

Gen 2 stock wheels, time to replace the rubber. Currently running Nitto Terra Grapplers in the last 20% of their life, which is fine for pavement but sucks for ice snow mud and deep puddles. Live in the high rockies of CO where all of the aforementioned conditions are seen regularly, plus the occasional sand and slickrock of Moab. Current considerations:

  • Falken Wildpeak A/T4W (C2)
    • With a 35psi max pressure, should these even be on the list?
  • BFG KO3 (D2)
    • No personal experience, have heard mixed reviews especially in the 2nd half of their life
  • Wrangler Duratracs (D2)
    • Make my Xterra unstoppable

Would love to hear thoughts on any of these. TIA

New raptor mismatch paint

Hey guys, just wanted to get some opinions from other Raptor owners.
I picked up my brand-new 2026 Raptor 801A last week and noticed in direct sunlight that one of the cab corners has a slightly brown tint compared to the rest of the truck.
Contacted the dealer, which is about 2 hours away, and they offered to fix it at no cost. However, I’d have to drive it back and leave it with them for about 1–2 weeks so they can repaint the corner to better match the rest of the truck.
I asked if I could get it fixed at a local Ford dealership instead, but they told me the warranty work has to be done at the dealership where I purchased it.
I’m a little hesitant about having a brand-new truck repainted, especially since I just bought it. On top of that, it’s a 4-hour round trip, and I’d be without my truck for up to 2 weeks.
Would you guys get it repainted or just leave it alone? Has anyone else experienced this issue with their Raptor?
Also, would it be reasonable to ask the dealership for some sort of compensation, loaner, or pickup and delivery for the inconvenience, or am I expecting too much?

Tire damage

I know I’m not alone with this issue and could use some input before taking legal action. With how big F150’s are in general plus the width of a Raptor, clearly we need to get as far into the Starbucks parking spot as possible, but the 90° corners on their curbs are no doubt causing significant tire damage. I’ve started a petition at the link below to have Starbucks round their curbs.

The Ford Raptor got killed four times before it ever went on sale. Here’s how it survived.

I don’t need to tell anyone here how great the Raptor is. But it almost never got built, and the story of how it survived is better than most people realize.

It starts in the late ’90s. A young Ford Powertrain engineer named Jamal Hameedi was working on the powertrain for the Duralast trophy truck, raced by Dave Ashley and Dan Smith under Enduro Racing. It ran a Ford DOHC 5.8-liter V8 with an eight-into-one header, and it’s arguably the best-sounding race truck ever built. It won the Baja 2000 and plenty of other races.

That was Jamal’s first taste of off-road racing. He went on to join SVT, helped develop the Ford GT and the GT500, and eventually ran Ford’s global performance vehicles as chief engineer.

Around 2006, SVT was trying to bring back the Lightning, but the street performance truck segment was dead. Jamal looked at how fast off-road was growing and bet on that instead.

Then the recession hit. Gas prices went through the roof, car companies were going under, and the Raptor program was killed four separate times. Every time, Jamal’s team figured out why it got killed, fixed it, and brought it back.

Before the production truck, there was the X1 concept, built by Roush with JD Fab suspension. Ford originally planned to run Bilstein shocks before switching to Fox, which is wild considering how much Fox became part of the Raptor’s identity. A lot of the people on the original program came from deep desert racing backgrounds and from the Lightning project, and there was apparently a $50k bounty on prototype spy shots.

In 2008, Ford sent a Raptor prototype to the Baja 1000 with Greg Foutz and Steve Olliges driving in Class 8, to prove the truck was actually Baja-proven. And remember Dave Ashley from the Duralast truck? They brought him in to help develop the production version.

The SVT Raptor launched in 2010, first with a 5.4 and then a 6.2 V8 making 411 hp. It was seven inches wider than an F-150 and originally, Ford wanted to use Bilstein shocks. Then John Marking brought Fox’s internal bypass technology to the program, and the original Raptor rolled out on 2.5" Fox internal bypass shocks.

Gen 2 showed up in 2017 and dropped the V8 for a 3.5L twin-turbo EcoBoost making 450 hp and 510 lb-ft. Faster, but for years the number one complaint was that it wasn’t a V8.

Gen 3 arrived in 2021, and the Raptor became a whole family with the Bronco Raptor and later the Ranger Raptor in the US. Ford also listened: the Raptor R brought the V8 back in 2023 with the 5.2L supercharged Predator out of the Shelby GT500, making 700 hp.

In 2022, Ford teamed up with M-Sport to build the Raptor T1+, a true factory Dakar effort that debuted at the 2025 Dakar Rally. It runs a Coyote 5.0 V8 with Fox suspension, and just like that Duralast truck from the ’90s, it uses an eight-into-one header. It sounds incredible. Kind of a full circle moment.

If Jamal never worked on Dave Ashley’s truck, the Raptor might not exist. Ford didn’t need to build it. But today they’re racing everywhere from Baja to Le Mans to Dakar and building enthusiast versions of almost everything they sell. Ford CEO Jim Farley put it simply: “There is no Porsche of off-road, and we want to be that company.” And now you can actually buy a Raptor T1+ for $1M and race it yourself.

Racing is still how they make that case, the same way they did in 2008 when they sent a prototype down the Baja 1000.

I got this 2011 raptor with plenty of options in a killer trade for my 1985 dodge ram 50 swap (ka24de with a big turbo)

I absolutely love it, it’s always been a dream truck, but with my income seemed like a just a dream for a while.

It is a little rough, has 263k miles, needs shocks rebuilt, has a few sensors out and some other things. I am extremely happy with it
