Geomantic houses, planetary joys, and essential dignities — should zodiacal signs depend on the geomantic Ascendant?
I've been thinking about how planetary dignities are applied in geomancy, and I'd like to hear how other practitioners approach this.
Some geomantic sources, such as A Handbook of Geomancy, assign Aries to the 1st house, Taurus to the 2nd, Gemini to the 3rd, and so on, regardless of the Ascendant. This seems to conflate the houses with the zodiacal signs, whereas in traditional astrology the sign on each house depends on the Ascendant.
I'm considering a different approach: retaining the traditional planetary joys as fixed house associations, while determining the zodiacal sign associated with each house from the Ascendant of the particular geomantic chart.
For example, suppose a chart has Scorpio rising. The 2nd house would be Sagittarius and the 3rd Capricorn. If Carcer or Tristitia, both associated with Saturn, appears in the 3rd house, Saturn would have essential dignity by domicile because that house falls in Capricorn.
However, the 3rd house would still be the Moon's house of joy, even though the geomantic figure occupying it is Saturnian. Since a geomantic house can contain only one figure, the figure in that house would not simultaneously be a lunar figure.
My questions are:
- Is there a historical basis in geomancy for assigning the twelve zodiacal signs to the twelve houses independently of the Ascendant?
- Would it be reasonable to determine the signs of the houses from the geomantic Ascendant, while retaining the traditional planetary joys as fixed house associations?
- Are there medieval or early modern geomantic sources that support, contradict, or offer an alternative to either approach?
I'm particularly interested in historical sources and traditional astrological reasoning, rather than modern correspondences alone.
Thanks!
