Discussion I built a free extension to inspect the requests your GTM tags send

Hey guys, adops developer here. I built Pixel Debugger to check the requests sent by Meta, Google Ads, GA4 and other marketing pixels, including tags installed through GTM. After publishing a change, you can inspect event names, destination IDs, values and currencies together. It’s free, with no signup. What would make it useful alongside your current debugging tools?

Try Pixel Debugger

Discussion I built a dataLayer debugger extension for Chrome

Hi,

I know, another dataLayer extension to use and we have plenty already.

I started working on this extension to read dataLayer events after the ones I used missed events or didn't work at all on some websites.

- Read dataLayer events as it fires, with persistence across pages.

- You open it as a popup or sidepanel utilizing chrome sidepanel for monitoring while checking different pages.

- You can use it to test your GTM container on any website to check your implementation.

And other features you can explore.

I used it over months now and thought I can make it public in the store so it can hopefully help someone.

I tried to keep it minimal and easy to work with.

It's free and everything in it is free to use.

This is the first time I build an extension so I hope it helps you while checking events or working on implementing it.

My background is in analytics and auditing events for clients so I have tested it on many websites. But still, anything can go wrong for you so a feedback is appreciated. It's not another AI slop (except the store images) I've been working on it for a year now.

Typing this on my phone so ignore any typos please or Grammer mistakes.

Download it on the Chrome Webstore here.

I hope I'm not breaking any rules with this post.

Question I'm looking for a good tool to assess my website tracking without asking someone to spend 5 days per month to do it

Hey there, I'm looking for a tool to help me assess the tracking of my websites, I just want to get a quick overview of what's happening on our website before pushing more budget on the topic (duplicate events, consent etc). The issue we don't have unlimited budget to hire full time people on the topic and we are missing time to do a sanity check every month in my team.

I saw a lot of tools available online but I don't know which one to use and most of them are trying to charge me. Do you have any recommendations to share? Or how do you manage it on your side when do you have small budget for this?

Best!

Support GTM Form Submission Tracking Isn't Working on a Landing Page Without a Thank-You Page — Need Help!

Hi everyone,

I'm completely new to Google Tag Manager (GTM) and have never worked with it before. I'm trying to set up form submission conversion tracking on a landing page, but I'm stuck and could really use some help from experienced people here.

Here's my situation:

I have a landing page with a lead generation form.

When someone fills out the form and clicks the Submit button, the form gets submitted, and a thank-you message appears on the same page.

The URL doesn't change, and the user isn't redirected to a separate thank-you page.

Since I'm new to GTM, I followed some YouTube tutorials and took help from AI to create a tag and trigger for tracking form submissions.

However, the tag isn't firing as expected when I submit the form.

I'm not sure whether I've configured the trigger incorrectly or whether this type of form requires a different tracking approach.

My questions are:

How can I properly track form submissions when the URL doesn't change after submission?

Which trigger should I use in GTM for this scenario?

Is the standard Form Submission trigger sufficient, or do I need to use a custom event, an Element Visibility trigger, or another method?

How can I debug this issue step by step using GTM Preview mode to identify what's going wrong?

I'd really appreciate it if someone could explain the process in beginner-friendly language, preferably step by step.

I'm trying to understand how this works rather than just copying a solution without knowing what's happening.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Question Cookieless Pings on GA4 event tags?

Should GA4 event tags still fire off (just with cookieless pings) even after consent is withdrawn?

I am using Google Consent Move v2 with Cookiebot. My default consent state is granted because I'm using a CCPA/CPRA cookiebot banner preset that uses implied consent but with a clear do not sell option to withdraw consent.

When consent is withdrawn, I see the consent state for my tags switch to G100 for the cookieless pings. And, I see all my GA4 events tags like scrolls, clicks, etc. all still fire off with this G100 value. Is that what's supposed to happen?

I don't really understand cookieless pings...so all my events will still get tracked but it'll just be "anonymous"? I thought GA4 already did anonymous tracking so I'm a bit confused. What difference am I going to see in my data if users opt out then if everything can still be tracked?

Question Our client had a Google Tag Manager but they didn't set everything properly and it was in 2021, they can't find who created it either. If we create a new one will it mess things up?

The last change they made was in 2025. No one seems to know who created it in 2021, we want to set up a new Google Tag Manager but are worried it will mess things up. We specifically need it for Reddit Ads too.

Have any of ya'll had this issue?

Discussion Delete all unused variables in GTM at once

Anyone does the audit on a regular basis and what's the process for you to delete unusued variables? I found a workaround without using any external tools, but just with some javascript in the dev console while being in the UI of GTM. https://gtmutility.com/blog/bulk-delete-unused-gtm-variables/

Discussion Subdomain vs Same-Origin Tracking – Which Is Better?

I’m currently using Stape for server-side tracking with a dedicated subdomain (sgtm.example.com), but I’m considering switching to same-origin tracking through Cloudflare (example.com/metrics).

For those with experience in both setups:

Which do you recommend for the best tracking reliability and data quality?

Does same-origin actually improve Meta and Google Ads attribution?

Are there any downsides compared to using a subdomain?

Would love to hear your real-world experiences and recommendations!

Question Testing tracking changes without a staging environment

My client has no staging site. Every change goes live on production or it doesn't go at all, and I'd rather not find out something broke by watching conversions fall over.

Preview mode covers my own session but tells me nothing about whether it works for everyone. GA4 reporting is a day behind.

How are you guys dealing with this when they can't test properly first?

Question Elevar Server Side Tracking for Shopify

Hello Community, I’m auditing tracking for an e-commerce brand with a separate Shopify store per country (I’m looking at the French store). Tracking runs through Elevar, with server-side sending to GA4 and Google Ads. The only active Primary Google Ads purchase action is Elevar’s server-side import from clicks.

What happened

  • Google Ads conversions for France dropped sharply from late July, while clicks, impressions and Shopify orders stayed stable.
  • Elevar confirmed a failure affecting only Google Ads delivery, from late July until Aug 31. They haven’t given a root cause.
  • It isn’t back to normal. In a July week, Google Ads reported about 39% more conversions than Shopify’s Google-attributed orders, which is the normal attribution gap for this account. In the latest week, it’s only about 5% more. That leaves roughly a quarter of the expected conversions missing, about 180 of them in France that week. Clicks and Shopify sessions are flat.
  • In the orders I checked, the first-touch UTM medium is google, but none have a GCLID. Since the Primary action is an import from Clicks, Google can’t match those orders.
  • Elevar support says the click ID can change due to email campaigns and similar sources. That can happen, but it doesn’t explain a sudden drop or a missing click ID on every order I checked.

Where we are
The client is considering moving away from Elevar (Stape-hosted server-side GTM or a managed provider like Zappush) because of the outage and the missing data. I’m cautious, because a new tool wouldn’t fix click IDs lost to consent settings or redirects.

Questions

  1. Has anyone seen Elevar fail to deliver to Google Ads without notice? Did Elevar ever give you a root cause, and what monitoring or alerts did you set up?
  2. Has anyone had gclid missing on Elevar server-side Google Ads purchases? What fixed it (enhanced conversions, consent settings, redirects, checkout domain)?
  3. Does Elevar’s explanation (email campaigns overwriting the click ID) match your experience?
  4. If you moved from Elevar to Stape or another setup, how did it go? What would you do differently?

Thanks in advance.

Support I need to change ownership of Tag Manager

**** RESOLVED, THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR HELP ***\*

Hi there,

My website developer has sold his business onto someone else and he now no longer hosts / manages my site.

My access to Analytics and Tag Manager was through his account.

I’ve managed to setup a new analytics account, add him as an admin, and have him move the property over to my account for my website.

What do I do with Tag Manager? Someone said to export the container, which I’ve done, is that right?

Question How do you handle tracking when the checkout is on a different domain?

Client's shop is on their own domain but the checkout is hosted by the payment provider on theirs. Customer leaves, pays, comes back to a thank you page.

Conversions are coming through but the attribution is nonsense. A lot of purchases show up as referrals from the payment provider, which is obviously wrong since that's where I sent them.

I know cross domain linking exists. What I can't work out is whether it helps when the middle domain isn't mine and I can't put anything on it.

Question Can GA4 detect basic e-com events like add to cart, purchase etc without needing GTM?

I'm a bit confused about this since I keep seeing conflicting info. What are the caveats here? Say I have a site hosted on WordPress (also its CMS ofc) and I have GA4 installed to that site but am not using any GA4WP plugin and want to view data in GA4 itself. The site has standard shop pages. Can I set up the add to cart, purchase etc events in GA4 without using GTM to capture them and send GA4 event tags for them to GA4?

Support All of my new conversion actions are inactive and I am going crazy

I set up conversions through GTM in multiple different accounts and my new tags are all inactive and have been inactive for many days and weeks. I did 100+ setups in my life and I know what I am doing, I do exactly the same as before, the tags are firing correctly in tag assistant. Even a simple link click tracking is inactive now. I suspect that Google did something with the google tags again that causes the problem but I have no idea how to solve it. This has happened in the past few weeks and there were no issues before. I don't have any developer knowledge, just enough I need to setup conversion tracking, I use basic custom JS codes somethimes but that's it. Please if anyone can tell me what changed and why my basic setups don't even work now let me know.

Edit: Also the inactive tags are an issue in accounts even where previously conversion tracking worked 100% fine.

Support SPA framework built on Angular in frontend. GTM only showing History Change in Preview Mode. What to do?

Hello hello! Kind of trying to figure out a website I'm working on in marketing. Never had GTM, GA4 or anything setup so I'm starting to get everything added so I can track traffic, customer movements etc.

Apparently, site is SPA framework built on Angular in frontend. Other notes are site is using Angular 16.2.12 with its official Angular Router 16.2.12, not a third-party router. Routing is client-side, path-based SPA routing with lazy loading, nested routes, and authentication guards.

Any next steps so I can see page views and full customer movement as they move around the website and engage?

Support Google Ads shows almost no conversions and GA4 looks empty, but the hits look fine in DevTools. What am I missing?

A site with a lot of Gads traffic records almst no convs in Google Ads and very little in GA4. The team says everything is set up.
Setup

  • GTM container (no server-side). GA4 hits go through a first-party GTG on a Cloudflare path. Ads hits go straight to Google.
  • Custom cookie banner with Consent Mode v2: default denied, update to granted on "Accept all".

Checked

  • container runs once and sends one page_view per load.
  • After "Accept all" the hit has gcs=G111 and returns 204. Before any choice it has gcs=G100 and npa=1.

Questions

  • Is there anything else that makes GA4 look empty even though collect returns 204 and gcs=G111? (Data filters, a wrong measurement ID, a stream mismatch, Google signals, something about the gateway?)
  • Anything you check first when the hits look correct in DevTools but Ads and GA4 show nothing?
  • Even after accepting cookies, nothing shows up on the GA4 side for the test visits. what could it be ?

Support I built a free tool that shows which tracking tags a Shopify store is really running

I'm a solo dev in the UK. I built audittag.com, a free check that reads a Shopify store's public pages and shows which tracking tags are really on them, what's missing and what's installed twice. It never logs in, and it says what it can't see from outside.

The people who need it are store owners whose ad numbers quietly went wrong after a theme change or an app install. They don't know that's what happened, so they never search for anything like this. They search for "why doesn't GA4 match Shopify".

So every channel that starts from a keyword is starting from one nobody types. I've been answering those questions on Reddit and forums. What else would you try?

News Claude found that GA4 was loaded twice on my shop, so I turned the setup into an open-source MCP server

I asked Claude to audit my small e-commerce site (3D-printed wargame terrain). With API access to GA4 and Tag Manager it spotted that GA4 was firing twice on every page, which had been inflating my numbers for months.
To make that kind of question easy, I packaged the access as an MCP server: google-ecommerce-mcp. Now I just ask things like:
• "Which products are disapproved in Merchant Center, and which attribute should I fix?"
• "Queries where we rank 5 to 15 with 100+ impressions: quick wins?"
• "Mobile PageSpeed of my 3 best sellers?"
Claude answers from my own Google data: GA4, Search Console, Merchant Center, Tag Manager, Indexing API, PageSpeed. Everything is read-only, and the token stays in the OS keyring.
Install on Windows: irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/MoonEyes/google-ecommerce-mcp/main/install.ps1 | iex (macOS/Linux has a curl one-liner). It sets up Claude Desktop for you.
Repo: https://github.com/MoonEyes/google-ecommerce-mcp
Built with Claude's help, MIT licensed, free. Happy to answer questions about the setup.

Question GTM server side tracking course for a digital marketer with basic/intermediate GTM/GA4 skill - but no Javascript/server related aptitude

That about sums it up. I do SEO, PPC, email marketing etc. I use GTM and really wanna get into server side tracking because of its utility to B2C/e-commerce, which is a big market for digital marketing services.

Anyone got any good courses to recommend - yes this includes paid - for GTM server side tracking?

Discussion Consent Mode shows denied, but requests still fire: what to check in GTM

Seeing a request in Network while consent is denied doesn't automatically mean the banner failed. In advanced Consent Mode, Google tags can send cookieless pings. Basic mode blocks Google tags until consent is granted. Third-party tags need their own consent handling.

To troubleshoot:

  1. Start with a fresh browser session, without a saved consent choice. Open DevTools before loading the page.
  2. In Network, enable Preserve log and filter by collect. Check the destination and measurement ID. This filter helps find GA4 traffic; it won't catch every tracker.
  3. In GTM Preview, select the event where the tag fired. Check the Consent tab at that event, rather than only the latest consent state. Verify that the default was set before measurement tags ran.
  4. Open the tag's Consent Settings. Distinguish built-in checks that adjust behavior from additional checks that block firing.
  5. Repeat after accepting and rejecting. For unexpected requests, inspect Network's Initiator: a script embedded directly in the theme may run outside GTM's controls.

Question Consent Mode issues with Begin Checkout and Purchase events

Hi everyone,
I'm having some issues with my Consent Mode setup and would really appreciate some help.

My setup consists of:
Shopify
Stape (using the Custom Loader app to inject GTM into my Shopify store)
Stapes custom pixel in customerevents
Consentmo (for cookie consent management)
Google Tag Manager (GTM)

My current setup
I'm using Consentmo's consent_status event as a trigger for my PageView tags, including:

Data Tag
GA4
Meta
TikTok
OpenAI

When a customer accepts cookies, all my tags fire correctly, and PageView events are triggered on every page.

The problem
When a customer proceeds to checkout, my PageView tags stop firing on the Begin Checkout and Purchase events.
I've checked the dataLayer and noticed that the consent_status event is missing on both the Begin Checkout and Purchase pages. As a result, my PageView tags don't fire because their trigger condition is not met.
However, my Initiate Checkout tags fire correctly.
It seems that Consentmo's consent_status event is not being pushed to the dataLayer during checkout and purchase.

My questions
Is this a limitation of Shopify's checkout environment, or could it be an issue with Stape's Custom Loader?
How can I make sure that consent status is preserved and available in the dataLayer throughout the entire checkout process?
Is there a recommended way to handle this without relying on Consentmo's consent_status event on every page?
Has anyone experienced a similar issue with this setup? I'd really appreciate any advice on how to solve this.

Thanks in advance!
