So my girlfriend and I have been dating for a couple of months now. I’m Indian-American and she’s Indo-Guyanese-American, and it’s been a great time so far.
Around a week ago, I introduced her to my parents for the first time, and I noticed that before they met, my girlfriend acted super nervous and jittery, which I just chalked up to nerves (since she’s pretty introverted). However, after they met, my girlfriend remarked about how nervous she was before meeting my parents because she was worried that they would disapprove of us together and try to call the relationship off and how relieved she was after meeting them because of how respectful and responsive they were and how much they showed interest in her culture and background.
She then explained that most Indo-Guyanese believe that we (mainland Indians) look down upon them and don’t consider them to be “real Indians”, which is a belief that I’ve honestly never heard ever. If anything, most mainland Indians don’t really know anything about Indo-Caribbeans and the ones that do are proud that they were able to keep their culture/traditions/religions alive even after 150 years.
After doing some research online on places like Twitter/Tiktok/Reddit, this seems to be a pretty common conception that a lot of Indo-Guyanese have. Does anyone have any insights into how this belief might have originated?

Why do we think that is?

Pedophilia in Guyana is a topic that is discussed but often not taken seriously enough. It’s something that happens on a day-to-day basis, mostly perpetrated against schoolchildren by bus conductors and teachers. But what I’m getting at is that calling out this issue seems almost impossible because, for one, is one witness enough to call out a crime as appalling as pedophilia? Oftentimes, when someone seeks justice, it is seen as making a fuss out of nothing, and others tend to say, “Just mind your own business". As a country i feel we should speak up more and eliminate this issue form our society.

Hey everyone!
I’m going to a cultural potluck party with some friends soon
What are some classic Guyanese dishes? Which are your favorites?
Thanks in advance 😁

I’ve noticed that many Guyanese are supporting Donald Trump. I’m curious to understand your perspective—what made you vote for him or support him? Are there specific policies of his that resonated with you? Do you believe these policies will benefit you personally, and if so, how? This is a judgment-free space where you can share your opinions openly; I’m here for a respectful discussion.

I lived in Guyana for my whole life , my family forced to leave Guyana twice before due to Terrible Economy in the past but in the end they settled in Guyana for decades . And with the boom of oil ,Guyana is gaining alot of benefits but there are some downsides to everything. Recently everything is getting too expensive and there are many foreign investors and landowners investing into commercials . Guyana has about 50% of Guyanese living in the poverty line and it will increase . Rent , goods , food , electronics etc are getting expensive , it is as much or even more than in Canada and USA New York. Living here has became worst for me as i predict i will not be able to keep up with the rising cost, i already signed up for land to buy but the time is ticking for me as renting is getting too much for me and lands getting bought out. Got notify they are selling the land and place i am renting. I have about less than a yr left to move out . I am looking for place to rent but the rents are too high.
Solution : is find new job/ way to earn more money or move out and i am looking at moving out from Guyana as the solution. Jobs are oversaturated by migrant workers in the low and middle level so wages gotten too low for Guyanese to keep up. I am thinking of moving out to some country in Asia . Learn the language . I don't have anyone else here, parents gone , relatives are in Canada but will not help . My future is uncertain here. I don't feel like i belong here anymore.

I am a born Guyanese, 18 years old. Both my parents are also full blooded Guyanese. I have never left this country to go live anywhere else to live for a period longer than two weeks and I've only travelled once in my lifetime.
Recently, I've been getting more and more into the laws of this country, paying more attention to how it operates and all of that. So, what I want to say say is, I hate it here. A country, that should, by all accounts, be rapidly developing it's infrastructure and public services and the richest country within the South American continent by GDP per Capita should not still be having constant power outages, water outages, internet connectivity issues and terrible, shitty, outdated and terribly formatted laws.
This country should these sort of issues rectified a long time ago. The COVID lockdowns had stopped in 2022 meaning that the government had 4 years to improve upon these basic needs.
And while I'm not too well versed on the economic breakdown, I feel as if there is an over reliance on our natural resources instead of a sustainable business model or an economy that does not rely purely on extracting resources.
This is partly our fault as a people in some way, we could have had a proper tourism industry, but the incompetence and uncaring nature of both the people and government make this place not only unpleasant, but also dangerous for anybody looking to spend their vacation here.
And what pisses me off even more is that another country that was worse off than us with no natural resources and gained independence a year before us had managed to cement itself as a booming global economic power, yet because of greedy, corrupt decisions made by the leading bodies of government during the country's life time, we remain an under developed nation that with very little respect for its own laws.
Does anybody else feel this way about Guyana or it just me.

I'm on a mission to go around and ask each country subreddit what people think about beans (my favorite meal!), just to see how people like or dislike them all around the world out of curiosity and for fun. If you like beans, hate them, they are a big part of the culture, anything else, just share your thoughts! 🫘
Greetings, Guyanese. The day, is today. Where your thoughts on beans, I ask for. The last country starting with the letter G, yours is. 'Spill the beans', if you will.
A very lovely flag, you possess. 🇬🇾🇬🇾

It's something I've always asked myself, her mom was literally Guyanese and she was born in Guyana, but she never spoke about her being Guyanese

Hey! As the title states im wondering how common it is for Hindus and muslims to get married for other Guyanese? And did you convert to marry or did you maintain separate faith??
Please keep it respectful!

I’m seeing the kit sold by “STARLINK Official” on Amazon for around US$349. I want to know if anyone bought it, shipped it through a freight forwarder, and successfully activated it on a Guyana Starlink account
