Apartment door unlocking by itself

Hi everyone. I moved into an apartment a month and a half ago and this weird thing happens where my apartment door will unlock by itself. After the first two times it happened I set up a Ring camera facing the door to make sure no one enters my apartment while I’m gone. It’s happened twice more since I got the camera. No one has entered my apartment but I can see the lock flipping by itself. My apartment is located near the elevator and near a communal outdoor space where the door sometimes slams. Could constant slamming cause the lock to shift and eventually unlock? Is someone messing with me? I’m less concerned because no one is entering my apartment, but it’s still kinda scary that my door unlocks by itself. I reached out to my building manager to get the lock changed. This is just boggling my mind. Thank you all for your help!

Edit: Here are some pictures and videos. Fair warning, the Ring video looks like it was filmed on a toaster. It’s also filming every few seconds. But you can see that the lock was in the locked position (pointing toward the green dot) then it flips to the unlocked position (pointing toward the red dot). You can see the light reflection change. I’ve changed the settings on my Ring camera to 24/7 recording so I’m sure I’ll catch a clearer version if it happens again. I also included pictures of the lock and what it looks like unlocked/ locked.

Edit: Trying to get the video to upload!

I'm trying to get the windows in my garage open and there appears to be a lock on them. Of course the previous owner didn't leave any info. I've attached a pic, does anyoneknow what these are called and how to open them? I'm assuming there is some kinda socket or tool that is needed

The difference in video surveillance

There's a huge difference between having cameras on your property so that you can see if someone's there...

And having cameras on your property so you can identify the person who's there.

All these cameras from Wyze, Reolink, Eufy are simply gimmicks to make homeowners feel like they're secure and protected but they all fail in one way or another when you need the most.

I will never rely on a wireless gimmick to protect my family and my property. Everything must be hardwired. Any camera I have in my home or any one of my properties must meet my specific criteria.

24/7 color, audible and visual deterrence, functional analytics such as facial recognition, LPR, line crossing and such.

The images I have attached are of the kind of cameras I will sell and use personally. Pay attention to the time stamp. There is no usable ambient light in this location if you were walking there at that time you would require a flashlight to see where you're going so you didn't fall in the water or down the stairs. The little bit of light showing on the second image is coming from the stairway 50 ft above the property.

Can't tell if someone's actually watching the house or I've been reading too many crime posts

My sleep has been garbage lately. A few times this week a car has slowed down in front of our house at night, headlights sweeping across the living room, then moved on. Could be a delivery driver lost, could be someone casing the place, and I can't tell which. I keep going back and forth on whether to do something or wait and see, and it's wearing me down. I'm at the point where I'd rather act than keep guessing. For anyone who's put a camera up over this, did it actually help?

Camera Planner

Hello everyone.

I'm working on an open source project that helps users plan their home security with the help of a website. Note: Vibe coded majority of it as I'm no longer a developer and AI helps speed up the process. You don't have to have an IT background for trying out this tool.

It helps new users get the basics of the setup. Visualize them in 2D and 3D(currently works on Android Chrome with the help of Google AR). The best part is that it doesn't require any signups/payments/app installations.

Current view of the application

A quick view of my project can be found here: https://home-security-planner-nu.vercel.app/

GitHub Repo: https://github.com/Sourabh06/home-security-planner

I would love to get your views on the application as I'm updating features whenever I find time.

Let me know in comments what you liked/disliked and how it could be better.

Those interested in helping can support my ongoing research here: Form Link

I need recommendations for a Security/floodlight

So my wonderful neighbor has now started to stand out in front of the house in his driveway with his drug dealer friend. I’ve asked them nicely to go elsewhere at night and it has not worked. I was thinking of replacing the light over my garage with something significantly brighter. I want something borderline offensively bright. I figured that if I completely illuminate the area, it would discourage them from hanging out. It has to be a motion detector light with a dust to Dawn feature. I’d also like it to be one where it’s low power until motion is detected, and it kicks on high. I’d even be open to one that has an app where I could turn it on full power when they’re just hanging out there. Curious to hear your thoughts and recommendations.

Elderly relatives removed all locks on her house before going out of state- and a neighbor just reached out because its been looted

An elderly relative has apparently removed all of her locks before traveling to another state. Im not sure what her logic was but she's been gone for over a month (one of her grand babies has come like two months early).

The inevitable has happened and she is out thousands of dollars in tools, per a concerned neighbor who reached out when they saw it being moved.

Im going in the AM with her son to reinstall the locks she removed (or new ones, if I cant find the old ones) and put up no trespassing signs.

What else can I do to secure the property. (Beyond trying to get her accessed for cognitive decline, because wtf?)

bedside flashlight, long and heavy to be used for impact

My search here didn't find me what I was looking for. I'm looking for a bedside flashlight, long and heavy enough to be used for impact. My current bedside gun is a tactical length pistol with a mounted light and reflex sight. I'm wanting a flashlight to carry in my off hand high as I carry my pistol low and back to avoid grabbing. The large flashlight is designed as a decoy and an impact tool.

I used to love the 4 or 5 C-cell maglites but I had two melt so I think that's why they've been discontinued. OTOH, I don't love the D-cell maglites because they're just larger in the grip and feel more likely to slip out of my fist.

Last, I don't want to pay streamlight prices at this moment. Some may say no price is too high for your safety, etc., etc. But for my purposes at this moment, this is what I'm after. I've bought those highly-regarded Chinese-made small flashlights in the past, and they've proven pretty good.

Can anyone recommend flashlights that offer what I'm after?

Do Not buy a gate from GateCrafters or WebDirectBrands

I purchased an expensive gate from GateCrafters-WebDirectBrands. The gate was not welded correctly and would not work. I have spent months trying to get them to fix their shoddy work but they refuse to take responsibility for their products. I have called and emailed the president of the company, Anthony Gateo, and he has refused to reply or talk to me. They are not to be trusted. The gates are overpriced and poorly made. Again, DO NOT buy from GateCrafters-WebDirectBrands. They are out of Odessa, FL.

What to do about this door?

Hi y'all! Moved into my apartment a few months ago, and am concerned about a door inside of my unit. It is locked to me and leads to the basement of the building which is accessible through a door on the exterior of the building and a cellar door in the backyard. The basement is frequently accessed by various contractors. I'm not trying to doubt the character of the people my landlord hires, but I'm a woman who lives alone in a large city and I don't really want to take any chances. It can't be jammed from my side because it opens into the basement. Is there anything to be done about it? Or a reasonable ask to be made of my landlord?

My kid's Wyze cam caught something that made me feel so bad for our dog

I have 3 Wyze Cam v3s and use one over my kid's bed. i recommend them to other moms because my husband and i can both check the camera and get notifications on our phones. i set the motion area around his bed so the dogs moving around on ours or the blinds blowing dont keep setting it off. im not very handy so we used hair ties and elastic bands to mount it lol

We originally bought them so we'd get noise notifications for if the dogs were going ape shit when we weren't home and I could yell at them through the camera to shut up. Ive also used it to scare my husband while hes gaming lool.

Last month when we took the whole family on a vacation, I had my friend who lives down the street watch the dogs. I kept getting night time notifications that there was movement in my kid's bed and it was just poor lonely Winnie lying in there wondering where we all were. So I texted my friend that she was up there, so she popped over to give her a quick snuggle and it was so cuteeee

Didnt expect the baby cam to catch something that sweet.

Need security camera recommendations

For context I live in a small town that’s trying to become a booming city and I’m in need of a security system as my neighborhood is becoming more and more sketchy. We live with a daycare behind us and a really sketchy trailer park with known and active drug offenders across the road, both have cops/ambulances that frequent the area. The neighbors that live right next to us also partake in some questionable activities and have kids about 7-12, although they are nice enough there is not enough supervision.

The trailer park has had cops over 4 times and ambulances 2 times in the last week. Each time for assaults or domestic disputes. Including screaming matches at midnight.

I own a two car garage not fenced into my property but right next to it. It is currently storing my late grandparents items, my parents items, and some of my sisters things as she is in the process of moving. The neighbors right next to us have been a problem with this garage. When they moved in last year they had family come down to visit and the woman’s father was smoking meth but didn’t want to do it in-front of the kids so he took it upon himself to let himself in the door. The door doesn’t have a functioning lock and is harder to close as the building has been settling. For that incident I was 45 minutes away and in the ER when my sister called me and told me what was going on, as it is my property and I care for the items stored there as if they were my own, I had to call the sheriff to handle the situation knowing I was not in a place where I myself could handle it. (In doing so caused more of an uproar because no one knew what he was doing in there just that he wasn’t given permission to be digging around in our belongings) The actual garage doors themselves are janky and absolutely a hazard so if the kids got in there I’m worried one of them would be injured or even become trapped.

The daycare is notorious for having EMS visit at least once a week but yesterday was really the last straw for me. At 6am a worker showed up and called the police because two women fled from around the front door. She felt unsafe to get out of her car until the property was checked and when the police showed up to check it a man fled from the back of the building where he was also attempting to break in. None have been caught.

We live 3 blocks away from the highway and have had multiple bailouts where they get caught running down our streets or through our yards.

The attempted break in at the day care really opened my eyes and as I’m starting a family and trying to protect that family I want to make sure we feel safe in our own home.

My garage faces away from street view. We keep my dog in there during the night in a kennel because that is her safe space. She is an outside dog so she gets free roam of the yard during the day. We do not have a fence gate. A male dog that has been terrorizing me for YEARS keeps going in my garage and literally shitting everywhere. He is a violent dog. He has chased me at night and sat outside my car growling louder than the engine and radio for hours before he got bored and left. He shreds cords or whatever else he can get to in my garage. He also terrorizes my dog. She has been getting more defensive of our property ever since this dog has started coming over. She now runs into the road and will chase people away from our house. This is a borderline retirement community. We live next to a 90 yo lady and a 80 yo man just moved in across the street. Not to mention the rest of the neighborhood likes to walk or ride bikes up and down the road with the weather cooling off. She has never had these problems before and used to even go put herself in her kennel when the amazon people would pull in the driveway.

My garage door is also janky and if it is shut it will be unable to open unless my dad and husband beat it into submission and last time screws broke loose from the ceiling. The backdoor that goes through the garage is also janky. Sometimes it locks sometimes it doesn’t. You cannot tell if it is actually unlocked from inside and it can easily be pushed in without even turning the knob. I’m afraid the doorknob itself isn’t the issue and it’s the whole door because that gets expensive fast and with our boy on the way we are penny pinching as is.

My older brother also lives on the same block and we found out last week he apparently likes to come over and shoot my husband’s bb guns in the back yard (even though they get put up in the garage) and take my parents ladder out of our garage and leave it leaning against a tree, pull every fold out chair out, leave soda cans, and trash everywhere. Also loves to give out unsolicited advice about how I need to cut a living tree down. (All of which happened while we weren’t even home) He also went into our house through said janky back door, looking for us when my car was gone and there was no knock or phone call. To which when he finally decided to leave he left the backdoor open. I have talked to him about this since and how disrespectful it is. I informed him next time I’m getting police involved I do not care if we are family or not that is not normal family behavior by any means.

Sooo with all that context of everything that is happening I am looking for advice on cameras to put up! (And thoughts on fence gates)

My preferred cameras would have
-no monthly subscription
-solar powered or wireless
-an app that notifies me of activity detected
-can be rotated through app or have wide view
-night vision
-records activity
These cameras would face where our entrance is and the back of the house. I will need at most just the two.

I also need recommendations on what camera would be good to put up in our garage. I would like wireless if possible. Along with a camera that would view the two car garage.

On the gate I need recommendations on automatic gate openers as I’m sure thats what the hubs would want. Worst comes to worst we will have to slide it open.

Now be gentle with prices 😭. I understand safety has a cost but I am a heavily pregnant 20 yo. I do not have a budget in mind but I need quality assurance while keeping it as affordable as possible.

Thank you in advance! Sorry for being long-winded but I feel like these situations are threats on our lives and I’m never sure if I am just over doing it. 💙

Intrusion defense setup to protect against stalker?

Hello,

My partner has a stalker who has broken into their apartment multiple times. We know virtually nothing about him, despite the fact that we have cameras in the home (they are eufy wireless local storage cameras, and we are pretty sure he messes with the wifi before entering). We are looking for a comprehensive security system (or individual components) for the home. Ideally the setup would be something that I could install now and also reinstall in a new location, as we will be moving ASAP. One brand I have been recommended was Ajax. Are there other brands or specific products that any of you would recommend? We would be interested in a setup that is at least partially off wifi, as we are pretty sure he has jammed the signals before entering before. We would like to keep the total costs under $1000, but if necessary we might be able to go over. Any assistance would be appreciated!

What are the thoughts around PoE camera systems for home exterior? Is Lorex the best option? I’ve had night owl, wasn’t a fan of the app but it could’ve been because I was using wifi and not PoE.

Is my home secure enough for this specific situation?

Recently installed a deadbolt to my only door, I have a doorbar if needed, and I have a German Shepherd aa well as a couoke small self defense tools. I don't currently own a gun because I do not have a reliable way to train with one currently, but I do have an outdoor camera monitoring my door all the time. Would be hard to break in through the windows because I live upstairs in a two story building, however my apartment complex is fully made up of poor people, druggies, etc. And theft, s*xual assaults happen here frequently and so on.
