QUESTION I want a smart lock that doesn't rely on the cloud and still lets me in when the internet goes down

• Upvotes

I just moved into a new place, and a lot of my devices are connected to the internet. But the front door lock is the one thing I don't want to depend on the cloud for.

Cloud services can raise prices, get discontinued, or go down unexpectedly. I can live with my lights not working, but I can't risk being locked out of my own home.

I'm still using a regular keyed lock right now, but I'm planning to switch to a smart lock. I'm currently looking at the lockin veno series. Ideally, I want unlocking, access logs, and alarms to work locally as much as possible, without relying on a cloud platform. I'm torn between the Pro and Plus. Both of them have person and package detection features, but the Pro version has more local storage capacity.

My family is coming to stay with me starting the day after tomorrow, so I'd like to get this sorted out soon. I'd appreciate any advice!

QUESTION Bought a house and need some advice on smart blinds

We just bought a house and are planning some renovations. We want to take down the old blinds and replace them with motorized ones.

The main thing I’m stuck on is whether to open up the walls and run cables for PoE shades. The wiring quote is within our budget, but I’m not sure how much difference it would make compared with battery-powered shades in everyday use.

I’ve seen SmartWings recommended quite a bit here, so they’re on my list. Are their PoE shades worth doing the extra wiring for, or would battery powered ones be enough?

Thanks for the advice!

PROJECT I got Roku Smart Home bulbs working locally with Home Assistant (no cloud or firmware flashing)

I've been working on getting my Roku Smart Home color bulbs (BC1000X / RK_BA19C) working locally with Home Assistant, and finally got it working.

Turns out these bulbs have a Wyze-compatible HTTP API listening on port 88. The commands are encrypted using a per-device key (enr) that can be extracted from the Roku Smart Home app's network traffic.

Once you have that key, you can send commands directly over LAN without relying on Roku's cloud.

I put together a Python implementation and an MQTT bridge for Home Assistant that supports on/off, brightness, RGB color, and color temperature. It also works with my Roku light strip.

The main limitation right now is that state reporting is optimistic, since I haven't gotten local state queries working.

I cleaned up the code and documentation and made the project public in case anyone else has been trying to integrate these bulbs.

I did use AI coding agents to help do this.

PROJECT ESP32-S3 gateway for remote IoT devices, MQTT and NAS recovery

Thumbnail
mattboxx.github.io
1 Upvotes

I've been developing ESP32 Tailnet Gateway, an open-source ESP32-S3 firmware combining network connectivity, monitoring and home automation features.

One use case is connecting an IoT device to an MQTT broker at another location through Tailscale/Headscale, without installing a VPN client on the IoT device.

It also offers:

  • MQTT and Home Assistant Discovery.
  • Wake-on-LAN with reachability checks.
  • Device and service monitoring.
  • ntfy, Telegram and email alerts.
  • Persistent event history.
  • Optional subnet routing.

The gateway can continue operating independently of Home Assistant or the NAS it monitors, as long as its power and network connectivity remain available.

GitHub: https://github.com/Mattboxx/esp32-tailnet-gateway

Screenshots: https://mattboxx.github.io/esp32-tailnet-gateway/screenshots/

Built on existing ESP32 networking projects.

What ESP32-based monitoring or recovery features would be most useful in your home automation setup?

PERSONAL SETUP Hue motion sensor flush in the ceiling - printed gimbal mount you can aim, no screws

Thumbnail

My old printed holders for the Hue motion sensors never sat right in the ceiling, so I designed a recessed mount that works like a GU10 spot gimbal.

  • Fits an 83 to 84 mm hole in drywall (9.5 to 25 mm boards)
  • 3 printed parts: mounting ring with spring arms, ball with a pocket for the sensor, clamp ring
  • The spring arms pull the 100 mm flange tight against the ceiling, no screws or glue
  • The ball tilts about 15 degrees each way and rotates, and stays where you aim it
  • Printed in PETG without supports, about 1.5 h and 47 g for a set
  • Battery change: pull the whole unit down, swap the batteries, push it back in. The aiming stays

Made for the indoor sensor (the square 55 mm one). Happy to answer questions.

PERSONAL SETUP New to this, what kid of hatdware should i get?

Home automation.

Main pc. Lg OLED55CS6LA smart tv

AMD Ryzen 5 5600

Gigabyte B550M K Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard.

Samsung 990 EVO Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 5.0 X2 NVME Solid State Drive.

SilverStone SST-GD06B - Grandia

MSI MAG A650BN 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply.

MSI SHADOW 2X OC GeForce RTX 5060 8 GB.

ADATA XPG GAMMIX D10 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200

TP-Link Archer TXE75E AXE5400 WiFi 6E WiFi Card PCIe WiFi Card

Storage external 10tb CMR HDD

Looking for micro pc for always on state. Local stored library must be accessible 24/7.

Frontend for library is kodi so micro pc must allow 4k playback and scrape artwork flawlessly.

Currently trying to set up virtualbox with home assistant to use with smart devices which will be automation frontend. This is all very clunky and user friendly at all IMO, looking for a system that is easy to use.

User friendly and low running costs is priority alongside performance and value for money and at least future proof for 5 years and once i get some sort of grip on it i will upgrade the hardware if needed

Budget ideally no more than £500 as bulbs and switches all add up.

Not really got a clue on this anything else i am missing or need to read up on?

Cheers

QUESTION Can I make this IEC C13/C14 fog machine remote controllable, portable and smarter?

Post image
13 Upvotes

Portable in the sense i dont have to rely on my homeautomation and can bring it to other houses. Right now, I have to physically press the button to trigger the fog. I haven't been able to find any aftermarket products for this except for 3-pin circular connectors. Remote control is the main priority, but making it smarter (like setting automated burst intervals) would be awesome. It’s definitely a budget machine, but since I got it for free, it’s worth a fun project!

QUESTION Sewage pump failure alarm that triggers if the power goes out or the float switch in the basin closes. Looking for suggestions what to buy.

I hope this is the right sub for this question. The plumbing subs are said this wasn't a question for them. I need an alarm on my basement sewage pump that is LOUD, like wake the dead loud. It needs to trigger if the power goes out or the float switch in the basin closes.

The pump is tucked away in the back part of the basement in a rambler style house. It needs to be loud enough to wake me in the middle of the night. It has a Zoeller APak Indoor Alarm (p/n 153924-B) which would be great, but it's little meep of an alarm is a joke. And, it doesn't have a dry contact.

My thinking goes like this:

  1. Sewage pumps GFCI trips and nobody in the house knows about it and the basin floods the finished basement. yuk The alarm would make me aware of the problem with ample time to fix it before anything bad happens.
  2. Pump stops pumping for some reason. The float switch will close and I'll still have time to fix it.

The budget is what ever it takes to get a reliable alarm in place.

QUESTION Two Refoss Home Energy Monitors (EM16)?

Just wondering if anyone is running two Refoss Home Energy Monitors (EM16). I have a lot of circuit breakers in my panel and I was thinking about getting a second EM16 so I can monitor all the breakers.

How does reporting work with more than one EM16? Does HA report them separately or can you combine them into one report? What have you found to be the pro's and con's of running two EM16's?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

QUESTION Chain roller blind motor.

My mum is a pensioner and has a number of roller blinds around the place. Some of them are hard to reach. I was wondering if anyone has used these motors for opening and closing otherwise manual blinds. Are they any good? Any particular issues with them? Would love to set her up with some smart buttons and maybe some automations for opening and closing the blinds.

QUESTION Has anyone used a Pix-Star digital photo frame? Pix-Star VS Frameo?

Hi

I've been looking at Pix-Star frames and frames with Frameo software.

One the one hand, Pix-Star has a remote (no touch screen), no subscriptions, radio, and free cloud for life? And at the time of this post, the app is a bit older looking and hasn't updated since 2024 in the Play Store.

The Frameo frames have a touchscreen, more modern and featured app it looks like, free with limitations or cheap? subscription at $2 a month, a new calendar, cloud is with paid subscription (more secure?).

The Pix-Star look a bit pricier as at 10.1 inches they're like $150 while Frameo is about $60-70.

Pix-Star has expand able storage and so do some/most Frameos. The Pix-Star is its own brand while the Frameo is software attached to various frames.

Both have their pros and cons but not sure if one is clearly better made, better gift, or easier to use than the other.

OTHER Drayton Wiser and Home Assistant

I have just reset up Home Assistant after moving and decided to change from Google Nest to the Drayton Wiser but I am having trouble getting the Drayton Wiser Hub connected to it.

I am running Home Assistant in proxmox which is on VLAN 10 and Home Assistant is on VLAN 20, the Wiser Hub is on VLAN 20 and in Home Assistant it shows up in the add section. However, when I try to add it with the secret key I get the following message "Timed out trying to connect to the Wiser Hub. Check that your hub is still online and try again"

I have tried:

Rebooting Home Assistant and Wiser Hub.

Adding it manually in the yaml configuration (got an error message saying this can't be done anymore)

Uninstalling the Drayton Wiser integration.

Downgrading the Drayton Wiser integration.

Reinstalling Home Assistant.

Assigning a static IP on my router for the Wiser Hub.

I can ping the hub and Home Assistant is discovering it as it shows in the Discovered section and can access it through my Drayton app.

I am at a lost of what to do next and hoping someone else has come across this and can help.

QUESTION I dont see tuya smart lights hitting my router at all, yet they are online and the app displays my public IP, whats going on?

i wanted a little more visibilty on my network, so i started assigining static IPs to my known devices, so i could better see and monitor my internal network. i recently had to change my password to my wifi and my router because randomly in the middle of the night some of my GE lights decided to turn on, turn yellow, and go full bright. i was worried i had some unwanted actor in my network.

but these tuya lights do not show up in my router at all. not the mac, not the any recognizable host name.

my home network is set to a static ip of 10.10.10.xxx, but the app in shows each light as connect to just my public IP. (verified, is mine)

Whats going on? why cant i see them in my router? what is tuya doing? for comparison, my Cync by GE light show up fine, and i have assigned Static IPs and labeled them so i know whats what

HOME ASSISTANT Control HA entities in AR with a Quest 3

I wanted to explore a simple idea: could I place virtual objects around a real room and use them to control devices through an API? I chose Home Assistant because I already use it at home. HA goes Quest is the result: a personal experiment in playful spatial interaction, from switching a light with a pinch to adjusting its brightness by turning a fist.

I have tested the app successfully on my own Quest. I do not currently plan active development, though strong interest could bring me back to it. You are welcome to fork the project and continue the experiment in your own direction.

PERSONAL SETUP My TCL C6K would not link to Alexa, so I built a native bridge for my setup

My Brazilian TCL C6K stopped at a country restriction in SmartAlexa, so I built TCL Alexa Bridge for my Echo/TV setup. I'm sharing the implementation and its limits in case someone has the same combination.

The path is Echo → TCL Assistant skill/cloud → TTVSCore hosted by the bridge → Binder → installed SmartAlexa → TV. TTVSCore handles registration, activation code, link confirmation and token renewal; SmartAlexa executes the controls. Both proprietary TCL components are still required.

The wizard runs using the TV remote, with linking completed in Alexa on the phone. Initial preparation uses temporary local ADB authorized on the TV. No root or firmware flashing. Optional network wake changes standby settings using WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS and may increase standby power use.

Tested: C6K/G15 BR, Android 14, V8-0016T01-LF1V048. Final v0.4.0 checks covered actual volume changes, renewal/reconnection, boot without opening the UI and 60-second standby/UDP wake. Earlier Echo tests confirmed volume/off/on. Overnight standby and other hardware/regions are unverified.

Source, APKs and illustrated setup/build/architecture guides (English and Portuguese):

https://github.com/eventanilha82/tcl-alexa-bridge

The UI is Portuguese. I'm the author, development used AI assistance, and the project is free and unofficial.

QUESTION Roborock saros 20 versus curv 2

TL;DR: robot vacuum needed for cleaning up hair from hard floor and mopping in a small apartment that is 100% hard floor. Price is not a factor. I’m considering Roborock saros 20 and curv 2. saros 10R would be my top choice, but seems sold out in US and I don't expect it to be replenished since saros 20 replaced it.

My home

  • I live in 800 sq feet by myself
  • No pets/kids
  • All hardwood, no carpet
  • No thresholds
  • I shed a lot of hair (male). Currently sweeping weekly isn’t cutting it

Vacuum requirements

  • No price restriction
  • Picks up hair (run daily) and other dirt I track in
  • Mops up from wearing my tennis shoes inside
  • Doesn’t need babysitting: Good at navigating around, cleaning corners, docking self, avoiding stuff on the floor
  • Autonomous self-cleaning: as little intervention from me as possible. Maybe clean the dust bin on the dock 1x per week and change dirty water after each mopping
  • Longevity: doesn’t break

Research process

I looked through many reddit posts and RTINGS (both linked and cited below). I also found this video to be really useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pv9_2D_Xc5k&t=2s

Current contenders

I’ve been looking at Saros 20 versus Qrevo Curv 2 Flow. Price is not a factor when choosing between these 2.

I’d also like to consider the Saros 10R, but not seeing any options at less price than 20, and they are not in stock on roborock site in the US

  • Mopping: The video and [1,2,3,4] all show curv2 is really good at mopping hard floors, even better than Saros.
  • Vacuuming: RTINGS [5,6] showed that saros is better than curv2 at vacuuming hardwood, and [6] found some problems with hair getting tangled in curv2.
  • Object avoidance: The video [7] and the comment [8] found that curv2 was bad a object avoidance, especially compared to saros. However, RTINGS [5] said it did good at this task.

DISCUSSION Does home automation as a job have a future?

I heard that home automation is becoming so easy that its dispensing with the need to hire professionals. Is that true?

I am autistic type 1 and I am looking for some kind of freelance work because I have concluded that regular jobs are not for me (including home office, due to severe ADHD and screen addiction). But I am over 30 years old, so I want something with stability for the future. I understand a bit about electricity and computers, but I am completely clueless about home automation and programming.
