Image Ninth Configuration x Nightman Cometh?
Just watched The Ninth Configuration, and immediately thought of Mac. Strange coincidence, certainly. But a few minutes later, one of the main characters grabs this bikers hand and crushes a glass in it, and it look exactly like Dennis and Mac struggling after Dennis blocks a punch.
Reference? Have they ever mentioned this on their podcase or anything? Maybe if it was just the guyliner cat-eyes thing I wouldn't have made the comparison, but the hand fighting thing happening made me think one of them had to have seen this movie.

The origins of the infamous trying times egg.
After a close watch of S7E1 “Frank’s Pretty Woman” I discovered the origins of the historical egg Frank offers in these trying times.
When Frank and Charlie are in the limo, Frank tells a story about how he was under the bridge and he found a full case of eggs and none of them were even broken! He also got bit by a crab but that’s not important here. Earlier in the episode we see Frank and Charlie boiling the denim they also found under the bridge. The same denim Charlie is talking about in the beginning of the episode where he reassured Dee not to worry because they boil the denim. When frank pulls the denim out of the pot you can see an egg fall back in. They boiled the denim and the eggs they found down by the bridge together in the same pot. Later in the taxi, Charlie is wearing the same denim they boiled earlier, and Frank is eating the eggs. The bridge is still clearly on Charlie’s mind too because when asked how he made his fortune he reply’s, oh, a little of this a little of that, and bridges. The origins of the egg and denim are scattered all over the episode and I just tied it all together. I’m sure I’m not the first to notice this but I love it and I’m sharing it anyway so if you don’t like it just move past it.

Image My buddies got me a blue revision copy of The Nightman Cometh script signed by Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton for my birthday!
This script is easily findable online for all of you to read but it’s really cool seeing what they had planned initially but scraped in the final episode. I watched the episode right after to spot all the differences and there are a lot! I’m incredibly grateful to my friends for this one of a kind gift!

Image Which concepts from the series would you like to see return in a new episode? I’d love for them to do a new, modern-day version of the TechPocalypse game—just so Charlie could lose his sanity all over again.

Text Hot Take: the writing is as good as ever
So I'm rewatching, just hit S13, and obviously saw 18 very recently. I'd say that were you to read just the scripts you'd struggle to differentiate in quality between early and later seasons- there are highs and lows, some seasons have slightly more weak scripts or ideas than others but that's the case with all shows.
What lets the later seasons down is the execution. The scrappy, making-it-up-as-they-go-along nature of the early ones gave the show a chaotic, hectic feel where all cast members would happily chip in, steal jokes from each others characters (there are many outtakes where lines Dennis says in one take are said by Mac or Charlie in another,) and when characters started yelling over each other, other characters would join in adding to the chaos (a couple of times in 4-8 Charlie just starts shouting "ayuhyuhyuhyuh" under the argument others are having.)
Now everyone is fully aware how to set up, film, edit the show (during the pod they talked about how new directors would be asked to teach them techniques they were using) they can make the show quicker (which is nice for them, as they have lives outside of the show,) and more efficiently, but at the cost of the jokes landing. Several times in recent episodes I've found myself thinking "that's funny" instead of actually laughing. It's like more jokes have been workshopped heavily prior to filming, at the cost of the spontaneity that gave the earlier seasons that unique feel.
Yes I am high as balls
