Back Exam Hydraulics

• Upvotes

How's the preparation for tomorrow's exam guys? Personally, I've somehow managed to superficially cover the entire syllabus within these 3 days (haven't practiced a single numerical tho). I've understood every single concept I've studied but there're a lot of variations that can happen with the marking scheme and questions' difficulty tier ofc. Since I've rushed the whole syllabus in the last few days, memory is volatile and formulas are tough as hell. With peace in my mind, I believe I can solve the questions but it'll take a lot of time to recall stuff, I might even have to derive some formulas in exam hall to solve numericals as I know how they come but didn't bother to remember them 😭. Clearly, time is going to be the most crucial factor in my context... Is someone going through the same? If yes, what's the plan? I just need to pass somehow, so tell me which questions/chapters are generally way too time consuming so I can avoid them in the beginning.

ASK Civil Engineer, 28, and confused about my next move — Master's in Nepal, site jobs, Lok Sewa, or abroad? Need honest advice.

I'm a 28-year-old civil engineering graduate, and I'm struggling to decide what direction to take with my career. I don't want to waste another few years making the wrong decision, so I'm trying to evaluate my options based on ROI, career growth, financial risk, and long-term opportunities.

Here is my situation:

I have a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Tribhuvan University, with 65% in the first division. I have around one year of experience working as a site engineer on building construction and renovation projects.

My experience with site engineering hasn't been satisfying. The long working hours, pressure, relatively low salary, and poor work-life balance have made me question whether I want to continue in this field. I don't want to spend my entire career doing work that makes me unhappy, but I also need to become financially stable.

Currently, I'm considering four options:

1. Pursue a Master's degree in Civil Engineering in Nepal

This would give me an additional qualification while allowing me to avoid unemployment and continue developing academically. However, I'm worried about spending two years and money on a Master's degree only to end up doing the same site engineer job afterward.

Would a Master's from a Nepali university genuinely open doors to structural design, consultancy, planning, teaching, or other better career opportunities? Or does the degree have limited value without specialized skills and relevant experience?

2. Continue working as a site engineer in Nepal

This would allow me to earn money, gain experience, and become financially independent instead of spending two years studying.

However, I haven't been satisfied with the salary, working hours, or work-life balance. I'm worried that continuing in similar jobs will leave me stuck in a career I don't enjoy.

Would it be better to keep working while developing skills in structural design, ETABS, Revit Structure, and BIM, with the goal of transitioning into a different role?

3. Prepare for Lok Sewa (government engineering jobs)

A government job could offer stability, benefits, and a more predictable career path.

The problem is that preparation takes time, competition is high, and there is no guarantee of selection. At 28, I'm concerned about investing one or more years preparing for an exam without knowing whether I'll succeed.

Is this a sensible investment, or would that time be better spent gaining experience and developing marketable technical skills?

4. Try to find a civil engineering job abroad, such as in Dubai or the wider Middle East

Working abroad could potentially improve my income and help me save money faster.

However, I'm concerned about ending up in another site engineer position with long working hours, high pressure, and poor work-life balance. I don't want to move abroad just for a higher salary if my quality of life remains the same or gets worse.

Would it make more sense to target structural design, BIM, planning, or quantity surveying roles instead, even if transitioning into these areas takes additional preparation?

What I'm trying to figure out

My main concern is the return on investment of each option.

  • Will a Master's degree in Nepal significantly improve my career prospects, or could I lose two years of income and still end up in the same position?
  • Can a Nepali Master's degree help me qualify for better jobs abroad, or would relevant experience and technical skills matter more?
  • Should I prioritize earning money now or invest time in education and specialization?
  • Is pursuing Lok Sewa worth the opportunity cost at my age?
  • If my ultimate goal is better pay, career growth, and work-life balance, which path offers the best long-term prospects?
  • What would you do in my position if you had limited finances and couldn't afford to make a major mistake?

I'm not necessarily looking for the easiest option. I'm looking for a path that gives me a realistic chance of improving my financial situation and professional life over the next five years.

I'd especially appreciate advice from civil engineers in Nepal, people who completed their Master's in Nepal, engineers working in the Middle East, and anyone who successfully transitioned from site engineering into structural design or BIM.

Please share your actual experiences, including mistakes you made and what you would do differently. Honest, practical advice would mean a lot.
