Guide Crop your posts, and general purchasing advice

If you're going to post a picture of a car asking if you should buy it then you need to provide more detail than just an uncropped picture of the listing. Please include the year of the vehicle, any packages it has, the mileage, and if it's a rebuilt title; it's impossible to determine the quality of a deal without this info.

Some general questions you'll want to ask yourself if buying:

G35/G37/Z:

  • Are the bushings good?

  • Does the car have the cylinder ring issue?

  • Can I afford to replace the catalytic converters if the car is over 150,000 miles

  • Am I okay with replacing the radiator at 190k miles?

  • Can I comfortably afford premium gas (no, you cannot put regular in these unless you want the car to commit wrecking-yard-self.)

  • Am I okay paying this much for a 10+ year old car?

  • Can I afford luxury car repair prices? (Infiniti is cheaper to repair than a German car, but cheaper != cheap.)

  • Are the engine sensors shitting out?

  • Did the person that owned the car before me actually know how to install these mods?

  • Why is this car only $1,500? Why is the seller trying to dump it.

  • Is there water under the floormats and in the trunk? If so then you'll need to fix the sunroof drain and the seals around the cabin air filter under the hood (usually the top cowl is the source of the air filter leak.)

They're great cars, but any car over 10 years old is going to have hidden issues. If you're asking reddit if you can afford the car, then the answer is probably "no" because the repairs on old cars are expensive.

If a G has over 160,000 miles and has mods then don't buy it as a daily unless you know what you're doing. Save your money and buy a commuter Toyota until you can afford a lower-mileage Infiniti or Lexus. If you want a project car, or are okay with doing your own repairs, then you can buy a G at any mileage.

Q50/Q60

The oldest Q50s are barely reaching a decade old, so they have far fewer issues in general.

Do you want a VQ (2014-2015)

  • If you want the VQ motor I recommend the 2015 models. They fixed a lot of issues with in-touch, and it is the most refined version of the VQ motor. If you can only afford the 2014, then I'd recommend saving for a 2015, or buying a 2013 G37.

  • Check the valve cover gaskets. It's the only somewhat-common issue I am aware of with the late-model VQ engines.

Do you want a VR (2016+)

  • Are the turbos on this 2016-2018 leaking? If a deal is too good to be true, it probably is, make sure the seller isn't trying to dump one of the unlucky VRs with the turbo issues. Look for coolant leaking from the turbo and demand a service history. If you do see one with bad turbos, factor in the cost to put an aftermarket turbo in. The Red Sport doesn't have this issue as often because it has a better turbo.

  • Keep in mind, you cannot drive a turbo car like a NA if you want it to last. You must let the car warm up before driving it hard, or you will have issues. It is also advised that you let the car cool down before you shut it off if you've been driving hard. This issue is not exclusive to Infiniti turbos, most TT engines have this issue, but you still need to be aware of it. You cannot run this engine like a VQ and expect it to be fine

That said, this subreddit massively overstates the regularity of the 2016-18 turbo issues. Most people with turbo issues did not know how to drive a turbo. If you want to know which parts and symptoms to watch out for, see this comment from J_C_Davis45

I'll update as more common issues are known.

Meta Post Flair explanations

I won't be enforcing use of a flair, though I do encourage it to help people find what they're looking for.

  • Car Pic: The point of your post is to show off the car holistically. e.g. your car in front of a sunset.

  • Car Mods Pic: The point of your post is to show off close-ups of specific mods. e.g. look at my new intake, it pulls 700 extra ponies.

  • Parts Picture: Similar to "Car Mods Pic," but the mods are on the floor of your dimly-lit room.

  • DIY Mods Pic: This is reserved for the brave pioneers who craft their car mods instead of installing mods they bought. e.g. a custom made laser headlight or a custom-fitted Shtora-1 electro-optical active protection system.

  • Question: A generic question that doesn't have a better-matching flair. Usually for discussions as opposed to questions with a specific answer. e.g. "How much longer do you think Infiniti will last?"

  • Help Needed: An urgent request for advice from the Reddit Mechanicus. e.g. "Why is my G35 heater not working and my car overheating?" (The answer is you need a new thermostat btw.) Please describe your problem in great detail, leave your post up, and edit your post when you found the answer to assist future googlers.

  • Buying Advice: Any and all questions related to buying an Infiniti. This includes pricing questions and questions about shady dealers.

  • Guide: A guide on how to e.g. install a mod, fix an issue, use a lesser-known feature of the care, etc. Please include pics if possible, but we love you for posting a guide anyway.

  • Damage Report: Pictures of busted cars or Infinitis owned by the IRA. You're not asking for how to fix something, just empathy from people who understand your pain.

  • Meme / Joke: Pretty self-explanatory. Shitposting should also use this flair. !!!Must be Infiniti related!!!

  • Infiniti News: News about the brand. New cars, new CEO, etc. Don't post blogspam or eye will ban u

  • Video: Video about Infiniti. e.g. a BoostInMotion video, or a major car channel yet again (incorrectly) shitting on the dual-touch screens. (disagreeing with me that the touch screens are cool is - while not bannable - very cringe.) Note, don't break the self-promo rule.

  • Video OC: Video about Infiniti that you recorded. e.g. your gopro footage from the track. Note, don't break the self-promo rule.

  • Art: The rarest, but most treasured flair. Reserved for the talented among us who can draw and such. If you're very fancy and put a ton of effort into a photo you can use this flair. Note: your red Q50 shirt is not art. Note, don't break the self-promo rule.

  • Review: Reviewing Infiniti, or a product for Infiniti. Don't break the self-promo-spam rule.

  • Meta: Posts about /r/infiniti itself. Whine about the moderators.

  • Other: Anything not covered by another flair.

Moderator Only Flairs

  • Community Contribution Award: Awarded to any post that makes it into the sticky. Usually reserved for guides. This is granted at moderator discrestion, but a lot of users saying "this should be sticked" will help it get there. This is a good flair to filter by if you're looking for guides that have been reviewed.

If you notice a flair that isn't listed here, call me a dumb ass and remind me to edit this post or make an updated one.

Help Needed Transmission issue (or not)

EX37 - not sure if this has started recently or I just noticed it, but many times, mostly on shifting to gears 2-4, there is a small hesitation once the next gear kicks in, with the rpm’s playing up/down, feeling literally like some clutch slipping. Anyone faced that before? Is it a warning sign of an upcoming failure or just normal?

Buying Advice Reliability of the 2022-2024 QX60?

I currently have a 2009 Fx35, with 209k miles (original engine and transmission). Its been my daily driver but we're looking for some more space for road trips, ect.

I see the QX60 has an upgraded version of the FX35 engine the DD, while the FX has the DE variant.

However, my main concern is the ZF transmission, are they reliable? Ive seen a few at 93k miles and they aren't priced bad, Id be willing to take one on at that mileage, if reliable.

Question [2025 QX60] is the service due now notification time based? or real time alert?

I remember back in the day the service notifications were time / milage based. the "service due now" notification came up. I did the last service last december (about 10k miles), and now we're end of Oct and car is at 17k miles.

im sure its time based, but just wanted to confirm

Help Needed Infiniti qx50 3.7 Engine Sounds

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Is this normal sounding qx50 3.7 with aftermarket dual air intakes. Drove it 25 miles and parked

Grok stated this, though looking for infinity owner/Mechanics thoughts :

What you’re hearing after the 25-mile drive and parking is almost certainly the electric radiator cooling fans continuing to run. On the QX50 3.7 (VQ37VHR), the fans are controlled independently of the engine and commonly stay on for a few minutes after shutdown to manage heat soak, especially if the engine is up to temperature, ambient temps are warm, or the A/C was used. This is standard behavior across the VQ-powered Infinitis/Nissans

Damage Report Update Valve body P0720

Post image

For those who are struggling with this issue of the P0720 speed sensor code, i got the code in the end of august just after i had some work done like drive shaft, control arm, brake pads replacement. Anyways i got the code and did my research and got a refurbished part from ebay, turns out most likely that part was not programmed properly since my gear shift locked up in park, i took out the part and refunded it since im not gonna fix that part, i got in touch with the dealership and they said they can try to source a refurbished part because for my car it is discontinued, anyways the estimated quote is attached but it probably will increase with shop supplies (trans fluid, etc).

Had to repost because i forgot to sensor my name and number

Anyone know where I can get a hardware kit for an Injen cold air intake for a G37? (Mounting brackets, etc)

Found a used system on FB. Can’t seem to get an answer from Injen.

Side question: Anyone know what’s included? (Besides the intake, filter, and rubber slip connections)

Thanks for any info.

I have a 2018 Infiniti Q50 AWD 2.0t. When I slow down at a stop sign or when I stop completely. When I try to give it gas the engine responds but the car doesn’t for a few moments then suddenly jerks forward strongly. I was just wondering if yall have any ideas for why that’s happening. (58k miles btw)

Guide 2016 QX70 Driver side sunroof drain bypass

Thumbnail

I posted about my passenger side yesterday and had the same issue on the driver side so here’s the rundown…

Saw a YouTube video of someone drilling a hole through the floor and thought they were crazy but it’s the same way the AC drain is done by the factory on the passenger side. The driver side has the exact same indentation as the passenger side where the AC drains, so maybe the frame is made to be symmetrical and maybe that’s where the AC drains in a right side driver car in Europe (just a guess). Anyhow, I drilled a 1/16” hole to feed a piece of wire and crawled under the car to make sure it was feeding into an open cavity and no lines or wires were running underneath the floor. After confirming it was clear I used a step drill bit to drill an 11/16” hole, which is the size the 1/2” inner diameter grommet required from the packaging. After drilling I used some black sand paper to smooth the edges of the hole so the grommet doesn’t get cut somehow. Since the hole exposed raw steel, I used 2 coats of a Rustoleum paint and primer on the hole to prevent future rusting. The grommet fit perfectly.

Then I disconnected the negative battery terminal to prevent airbag deployment when removing the A frame pillar. I fed a 14/2 wire through the A pillar down the dash and routed it to the firewall. Then put the 1/2” tubing around the wire and used electrical tape to bind them, then pulled the wire to feed the tube (much easier than trying to feed the tubing itself). I used a 90 degree 3/8” brass barb to feed through the new grommet hole in the floor, and put a 2-3” piece of tubing on the bottom side of the elbow through the grommet to ensure the water drained downward past the grommet. Also used some RTV silicone on the grommet after it was fully set in place (overkill maybe, but easy to ensure no water gets in through the floor).

I cut the factory sunroof drain about halfway down the A pillar and connected the new tube with a 3/8” straight brass barb fitting and used a clamp on the factory side of the tubing since the new tubing felt very snug. I left the old tubing intact and tucked next to the new tube since there’s room, figured there was no point to pull it out entirely.

Tested it by poring a water bottle down the sunroof drain and all of the water drained quickly out of the bottom of the car. Hopefully this is the end of having wet carpets and a mildewy smell in the car after a rainstorm 😅

Help Needed How to Check 01 G20 ECM Health

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just wanna know how I can be 100% sure that my ECM (MEC22-610 model) is not fried or faulty in any way. I’ve been dealing with a code P0505 for months now and now that I’ve finally got an OEM grade IACV (I had an Import Direct IACV from Oriellys that didn’t solve the issue and the code came back after a week), I don’t wanna let my possibly faulty ECM destroy my new valve. I’ve heard that the ECM’s and valve’s lives are basically tied together, one dies the other does too. I’ve been having these weird RPM symptoms for months, it’s weird because it’s like the weird RPMs happen when I’m not above 2k RPMs while under 20 mph (they go away when I’m above 20 MPH). Video shows me first slowly accelerating to 20 mph and you can see the weird behavior, when I get to a completely stop and then step on it (aiming to stay at or above 2k RPMs) it doesn’t really happen.

Guide 2016 QX70 Passenger side sunroof drain bypass

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

Been having sunroof drain issues for a long time - successfully cleared them before using vinegar/soap/warm water solution but it eventually got clogged again so I decided to do the bypass method.

Remove kick plate trim and the lower trim panel under the glove box and pull the carpet back. Disconnect the negative battery terminal first to avoid potential airbag deployment in the A pillar. After removing the A pillar trim I attempted to run the hose without removing the glove box, but it was way too difficult since the tube bends. The glove box was only 6 screws so I removed that and it made the feed much easier. A tip I received was to run a piece of 14/2 electrical wire along the path first, then put the new sunroof drain tubing around the wire and use electrical tape to secure them together, then pull on the electrical wire to feed the tube, worked great and made it so much easier than trying to feed the tubing by itself. In videos I’ve seen people pull the old sunroof drain out, disconnecting it from the firewall grommet, but there was plenty of space to leave it tucked next to the replacement tubing in the A pillar.

Parts used:
4-5ft of 1/2” outer diameter 3/8” inner diameter tubing (bought 25’ on amazon for $15; enough to do passenger and driver sides with extra leftover)
1 x 3/8” brass straight barb fitting to connect the sunroof drain hose to the new tubing about halfway down the A pillar
1 x 1/2” by 1/2” by 3/8” brass T - the AC drain hose is 1/2” inner diameter and the 3/8” T is for the new sunroof drain tube
1 x box cutter to slice the tubing

I used the metal hose clamps that came with the brass connectors - some videos say they’re not necessary but why not since they fit and it only takes a couple extra minutes.

Tested it by pouring a bottle of water into the sunroof drain and it drained quickly and no water entered the foot well. Finally fixed!

If you haven’t replaced the cabin air filter in a while, you might as well do it while the glove box is out.
