can someone explan the power imbalance in interracial relationships?
Hey, I had this conversation with a German friend recently when I was talking about the whole long process of renewing my residence permit. He jokingly asked if I’d ever considered marrying someone for a passport, and I said no because I’d never thought about it. Then he was like, “Oh, right, because of the power imbalance it could create, right?”
I was honestly confused by what he meant, and it’s been on my mind for a while now. I mean, there are obviously interracial and international couples in the expat circles I’m in, but I’d never really thought about relationships in terms of a power imbalance like that. Can someone explain what he meant and what I’m missing here?

How to handle the staring??
To give context, I’m a black American woman dating a Ukrainian man. Both of us are attractive (according to outside opinion). I’m 26 and he’s 36. He wears all designer and drives a sports car. When we’re out together, the judgment is insane. We were just chilling in front of a chick fil a in the car and an older black man was looking at my boyfriend and scrunching his face up in disgust and shaking his head.
Another time, a white woman saw us holding hands in the car while stopped in traffic and her jaw was just dropped and she wouldn’t stop staring. We simply kissed one time and some younger white kids wouldn’t stop being weird about it. We stepped onto an elevator together another time and an older black man stiffened up and got all tense while glaring at my boyfriend.
These experiences are honestly stressful as hell. Half of them I don’t notice because I’m so mesmerized by my boyfriend, he points them out. But I already have diagnosed social anxiety and although I’m medicated, it’s a hard dynamic to get used to.

alternative black girls and interracial dating
Hi all!
It is a stereotype in the black community that some black people who date interracially have a certain “look” to them, and a “look” that comes up often is alternative aesthetics (like goth or emo or anything outside of whats considered “normal”). I am an alternative girl who doesn’t strictly date interracial— I like who I like, but am currently dating a very normal looking white guy loll. It feels a bit like im fulfilling a stereotype
I was wondering if there were any alternative black girls in this sub (or maybe alternative girls of other races if that stereotype also exists in other communities) who are currently in interracial relationships. Is your partner alternative as well or the complete opposite of you? Do your friends or any make fun of you or have you been told that you “dress like you like white men”?
Thanks to anyone will to share their thoughts! :)

Black Woman and White Mexican Man
I am a Black woman. Was born and raised in the Caribbean. Migrated to the United States and have mostly dated Black men in my life.
By a chance meet, I have crossed paths with a man with the kindest of souls. The warmest of personalities. Our eyes locked and it was like the world stood still, for both of us.
He is a White Mexican who very much looks like a White Man but with the cutest of accents. He comes from wealth and I from humble beginnings. He is a senior executive and I a woman still navigating a career in law. And it so happens we are both parents - I am raising a black son with a very present Black father, and he two children with a Spaniard mother. They are recently divorced.
Can love still thrive in a space where socioeconomic and cultural differences exist? Where children of different cultures are involved? Can the potential of a blended family even be possible? Am I being unrealistic with my head in the clouds?
I never in a million years thought I would fall madly in love with a man who isn’t of my own race, but here I am.
That said, will a wealthy White Mexican culture and family accept me?
I welcome all opinions.

Example of racism / Possibly offensive Black woman interested in dating Mexican men, but hesitant because of a past experience. Looking for advice.
Hi everyone! I’m 26, African American, and I wanted to share a past experience and hopefully get some input from people who have been in similar situations.
Back in high school, I had a Mexican boyfriend. Before we started dating, we were actually really good friends for about two years until he eventually admitted that he had feelings for me. We started dating, and things were going pretty well.
However, when he brought me around his parents, I noticed something that really hurt me. His parents wouldn’t acknowledge me or even speak to me. It was almost as if I didn’t exist. I felt extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome, and honestly, that experience stuck with me. We eventually broke up.
I’m aware that anti-Black racism and colorism can exist within some Mexican families and communities, just as they can in other communities. I don’t want to generalize an entire group of people based on one experience, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me hesitant about dating Mexican men again.
The thing is, I’m still very attracted to Mexican men, and I genuinely appreciate the culture. However, I haven’t dated a Mexican man since that relationship, and part of me is afraid to put myself in that position again.
I guess my question is, has anyone else experienced something similar when dating interracially, especially when it comes to being accepted by your partner’s family? How did you navigate it?
I’d especially love to hear perspectives from Mexican men who have dated Black women, as well as Black women who have dated Mexican men.
I’m genuinely curious and open to hearing different perspectives. ❤️

How do you guys deal with criticism?
Im white, my boyfriends black. Together 7 years. Ive had both sides be critical and say some pretty terrible and derogatory things about us both. This just started in the last 2 years. We have a child and im afraid to send her to preschool right now. Are things worse than ever or were we just blind?

punching down on your race is never cute/attractive
Just coming here to say that it’s never cute to talk down about your own race like your doing the other person a favor or proving to the why you’re wanting to date them.
I have had this happen with two races of men, white/Asian both times it was awkward and turned me off right away. All that tells me is you’re trying to prove something to.. yourself? Or you think I’m insecure enough to think that’s somehow a compliment to me?
I mean, I am pretty insecure but, not for that.

Response to my bf’s AITAH post on wearing Mud Cloth
Sorry for such a long post. I'm posting this here because reposts aren't allowed on this subreddit, but I felt the need to share my perspective. My partner and I were both pretty shocked by how heated the comments got on his post in r/AITAH, and I felt the need to clarify a few things because the original post left out key context and made it sound like I was controlling what he wears.
He only even made the post in the first place because he was insecure about it. He is really afraid of being offensive because he cares (especially as someone dating a Black person). I didn't give him a particular energy to presume he was a bad person for this, nor did I imply that he was a bad person at all, especially since I'm the one who bought him the top to begin with.
For context, I’m African American and Caribbean. I don’t claim to be an expert on continental African textiles or traditional garments, and I certainly don't speak for African people, which is exactly why I handled the situation the way I did.
We were at a Black Cowboy event in Oakland and came across a vendor selling handmade "Two-Way Tops" (pieces that can be styled in multiple ways). I fell in love with the designs and bought three for myself, and when my partner found one he liked, I bought it for him as a gift and he wore it immediately.
While walking through the event, a Black man gave him a noticeable, uncomfortable look. He didn't say anything, but the vibe was clear. Once we left, I privately mentioned it to my partner. I told him that as a white man walking around in traditional African-style print next to his Black girlfriend, he might get double-takes or side-eye. I didn't know if the pattern had specific cultural or ceremonial significance, so I simply suggested he do a little research on the print or style so he knows what he's wearing. I never told him he couldn't wear it, I never called him a cultural appropriator, and I never forced him to take it off.
If your partner is walking around getting weird looks in public over an outfit, wouldn't you want to give them a heads-up and suggest they look into it?
The whole comment section was kinda ironic to me because the vast majority of people upset in the comments aren't African or Black, yet they're commenting on what is or isn't offensive to Africans. They were also saying that cultural appropriation is mostly an American concept. I wouldn't know how accurate that statement is, but obviously cultural dynamics differ globally. But, we live in America. We were at an event celebrating Black culture in Oakland. Pretending social context and history don't exist here is dense. Wanting to be mindful of another culture's symbols is basic respect. We don't need to wear any specific garment. If a specific print turns out to be sacred or disrespectful to wear casually, why would we want to inadvertently offend people when a quick search can clear it up?
Anyway, we got our answer from actual African commenters that it’s a casual piece, it’s not sacred, and appreciation is welcomed. Great! NBD. He can wear his top in peace.
But people getting so upset over me saying "Hey, people are looking at you weird, maybe look up the history of that print before wearing it again" is wild to me.
For those in interracial relationships, how do you and your partner handle giving each other a heads-up about public reactions or cultural nuances when you're out together?

White woman & Sikh Indian man - doomed?
I’ve just broken up with my ex boyfriend who is Sikh Indian after four years because his father won’t accept our relationship because im white. He refuses to acknowledge that I exist. My ex seemed genuinely heartbroken but Sikh men- did he really have no choice? There’s no chance I would get back together now, so I’m more curious as to what would have happened if he picked me. Would his dad have truly never talked to us? Is it that severe? My ex is in his late thirties and wants to get married (he said often, before never proposing).
Thanks for any insights you might have </3
ETA: doomed is referring to our specific situation because of his father’s convictions, not the concept of a white woman and an Indian man as a whole.
