Ethics and Conduct Monsoon Chaturmas begins tomorrow. READ
The spirit of Chaturmas
Vyakhyan Vachaspati, Tapagachchhadhipati His Holiness Acharya Bhagwan Shrimad Vijay Ramchandrasurishwarji Maharaja gave a sermon in Bhuleshwar, Mumbai on Ashadh Chaumasi Chaudas, 19 July 1936 on the significance of Chaturmas. The human birth itself is described in the scriptures as the “season of dharma”, and Chaturmas as an especially precious season within it. Its purpose is not simply to observe a few customs for four months, but to remember what human life is ultimately for, namely, mukti. Just as we naturally change our habits according to the physical seasons, Chaturmas should bring a deliberate change in the direction of our life. Worldly activity, unnecessary movement, consumption and distraction should decrease, while dharma, in the form of self-restraint, detachment and concern for the soul should increase. To let these four months pass exactly like the rest of the year is to miss a rare spiritual opportunity.
At the same time, he repeatedly warns us not to turn Chaturmas into a mechanical collection of rules. Giving something up has value only when it weakens attachment, controls the senses, reduces violence and preserves liberation as our ultimate goal. A person may accumulate many vows and still remain deeply absorbed in possessions, taste, comfort, business and worldly thought. Conversely, even a modest rule, taken sincerely and observed carefully, can transform the mind. The real question throughout Chaturmas should therefore be ‘Is this making me less attached, more disciplined, more conscious of the soul and more serious about moksha?’
Pujyashri speaks of how one must, during this period, *take definite niyams according to one’s strength and then protect them seriously*. He speaks of:
- reducing sachitta and unnecessary consumption
- practising greater care for jivdaya
- restricting unnecessary travel and worldly activity
- observing brahmacharya to the extent possible
- giving up (or at least reducing) ratribhojan
- using boiled water with care
- undertaking pachchakkhan, samayik, paushadh and other forms of samvar,
- making daily Jinpuja, darshan, pravachan, guru vandan and dharma-chintan part of one’s daily routine and
- learning something new everyday, even if it just one gatha and
- cutting down on habits and entertainment that merely feed the senses
We try to merely add religious activity to an unchanged life, which often proves ineffective until we consciously make more room for dharma by taking something away from sansar.
One should constantly ask, ‘Why am I not becoming completely absorbed in aaradhana? Why is viradhana not decreasing? Why is my attraction towards dharma not becoming stronger?’ If, instead of reflecting on these questions, our free time continues to be spent in idle and spiritually harmful talk, we are, in his striking words, digging our own grave with our own hands. Everything apart from (1) the atma, (2) the qualities of the atma, and (3) the means of attaining those qualities ultimately distracts niyams during Chaturmas.* Once this is genuinely understood, reducing our samsara becomes natural, and taking special niyams during Chaturmas follows naturally too.
With Ashadh Chaumasi Chaudas tomorrow and Chaturmas beginning thereafter, I would very strongly encourage everyone to read this sermon in Gujarati beforehand (see link below). It does not simply list Chaturmas rules but explains what these four months are actually meant to do to us.

Jain Ethics If you've decided not to marry and not to take deeksha, let's figure out this life together.
Looking for fellow seekers who have consciously chosen this path, not to convince each other, but to support each other in walking it well.
A small disclaimer before we begin: I'd particularly appreciate hearing from people who are 25+ and have spent considerable time reflecting on this choice. This isn't about encouraging anyone to give up on marriage, nor is it about glorifying renunciation or creating an echo chamber where people reinforce each other's decisions.
Life is long, and our understanding of ourselves can evolve. I'm simply hoping to connect with people who have made this choice thoughtfully, out of genuine conviction rather than a passing phase, disappointment, or temporary distress.
The idea is to support people who are already walking this path.
Whenever my relatives approach me with marriage proposals, I tell them that I'd like to avoid taking on more sansaarik bonds that could draw me away from my saadhna.
Every new relationship brings its own responsibilities, expectations, and courtesies. These bonds can be beautiful, of course, but they also ask for our time, energy, and mental space.
Yes, there's also a beautiful argument to be made for living in sansaar without becoming absorbed in it. I'm aware of that perspective, and I'm happy to explore it in another discussion. But that's not what this post is about.
I'm curious whether there are others who have consciously decided not to marry and not to take deeksha, yet want to build a thoughtful, sustainable life centred around their saadhna.
I feel we could help each other in ways that are difficult to find in conventional social circles.
For instance:
- Work, money and freedom: If we're living alone, keeping our needs minimal, and have built up some net worth, how do we decide when we're financially and mentally ready to step away from corporate life? The answer goes well beyond a number in a spreadsheet.
- Navigating family and society: How do we maintain a healthy relationship with our parents and relatives without constantly having to defend our life choices? It's one thing to set boundaries in theory and quite another to practise them with people we love.
- Companionship and practical support: Who looks after us when we fall ill, go through a difficult phase, or simply need someone to talk to? How do we build a dependable support system without compromising the independence and solitude we value?
- Finding like-minded people: Could some of us eventually find compatible housemates or even explore living together, provided our values, habits, boundaries, and spiritual practices align? Not necessarily right away, but perhaps somewhere down the line.
- Saadhna and everyday life: How do we organise our days, stay accountable, navigate doubts, and keep growing without becoming socially isolated? It would be wonderful to have kalyan mitras who understand this particular way of life.
These are just a few thoughts. I'm sure people further along this path have insights and experiences that the rest of us could learn from.
I don't expect everyone to have the same reasons, practices, or understanding of spirituality. In fact, thoughtful differences would be welcome. The point isn't to create a group that blindly agrees with one another, but one where we can exchange ideas honestly, challenge each other constructively, and offer practical help when needed.
Perhaps we could begin with conversations here. And if there's enough genuine interest, we could eventually form a small community to share experiences, discuss practical questions, become accountability partners, and perhaps even build arrangements for companionship and mutual support.
If this resonates with you, I'd love to hear your story. What has helped you navigate this path? What are you still figuring out? And what kind of support do you wish you had?
Maybe we can make this journey a little less lonely, a little more joyful, and a lot more sustainable for ourselves and for one another.

Jain Scriptures Curious if there are folks who value researching, studying, experimenting and experiencing Spirituality with Science over the mundane sansaarik life.
I am 28 M, and it is Marriage O'clock striking loudly in my family.
I am a software developer by profession. I am quite sorted and content with minimal needs.
I feel I can see things from outside the matrix at times, and hence I do not crave worldly things anymore. Food, entertainment, dopamine boosts, everything is a tool for survival and I see it as it is. No that does not mean I have a very bland life. Life is super exciting for me.
I have begun to extract excitement and satisfaction from studying, learning, experimenting and helping others.
I dig deep into researching and studying philosophies or streams of sciences. Since I am born as a Jain, Jainism is the obvious first choice of exploration for me. And I am very impressed and aligned with the core tenets.
There is a long way for me to go and I feel, I can do much more if I have someone to share my journey with, who is aligned with these goals and epiphanies of mine. On the flip side I realise that if I marry someone who is not interested in these and is interested in sansaar, then I will make em suffer with my priorities and they will also affect my journey.
So I wanted to understand that should I even try to sow seeds like these posts to attract the right person to my DMs, or focus on my solo journey and pull the plug on marriage brutally in front of my relatives.
PS: I am not interested in taking deeksha rn, since I want to experiment with things and would need labs and machines to work on, and I will explore other philosophies as well.
Basically a lot of folks say, don't make a khichdi, either live in sansaar, build a family or just leave it and take deeksha. Putting this up so that I can help em understand that I am looking for a middle peaceful ground.

General Post Bhav Aalochna Prerna.
Pranaam.
Want to share something with you guys regarding something I recently learned. Bhav & Yearly Aalochna.
Here, we write all the paap-may things that we have done since our birth, without absolutely any shame, no matter how personal, even if no one knows it (but karma-satta has already noted it) and give it to a Sat-guru / Gitarth Guru Bhagwant and take Aalochna from them.
One example, A manushiya jeev for something that may seem like a small thing regarding peeling of a fruits skin (dont know whys and then whats, of the story) and in the coming bhavs, the result was, his own skin was peeled of. (He was samtaamay during that time and kevel gyaan emerged) This is the vague story that I remembered, but written just to share how significantly our paap-may things may impact our future bhavs.
This is a prerna to you guys to genuinely write bhav and yearly aalochna / get more info about this from your Guru or Sahebji near you. 🙏🏻
Jin aagyna viruddh bolayu hoy toh Micchami Dukkadam 🙏🏻

General Post Dungarwal Jain
Are Dungarwal Jain anyway related to Rajputs of Rajasthan?
I am from Indore and just came to know that we were originally from Ratlam-Udaipur Belt.
I digged in more and realised we were originally Chauhan Rajput and converted to Jain some 400 year ago.
Anyone who can shed some light on this? I am just curious about my ancestry.

Durga Puja was just over and mutton was widely consumed in West Bengal. Why didn't Jains buy the goats there, like they did on Eid?

Q&A/Doubts Has anyone dealt with rigid Jain parents forcing rituals and traditions on their daughter-in-law in the name of “rudhi-chust”?
Has anyone experienced something similar?
My parents are staunch followers of Jainism. In the name of rudhi-chust (tradition/customs), they try to force everything onto us — especially my wife.
For context: I had a Jain-Hindu marriage. My wife is open and ready to learn and balance both religions. In the beginning there were a lot of conflicts — one major one was about having only a Jain temple in the house. Instead of helping her understand things slowly and gently, my mom started forcing her — constantly telling her to follow Jain practices, repeatedly sharing Jain stories and rituals, and putting pressure on her.
Eventually we decided to keep only the Jain temple at home, and my wife said she would worship in her mind. Even after this compromise, the pressure didn’t stop.
They have become quite aggressive and seem insecure that Jainism might get diluted or left out of the family. I had a serious discussion with them about this, but they still aren’t listening. As a result, both my wife and I are slowly losing interest in Jainism itself.
There was also a debate about name change. My mom said that in our Jain community, most daughters-in-law change their names, and she keeps linking everything back to Jainism — even when it doesn’t really make sense.
My mom is generally a sweet person, but when it comes to religion she becomes extremely rigid.
Has anyone been through a similar situation with parents?
How did you handle it?
Any advice on how to tackle this without completely damaging the relationship?

Q&A/Doubts The Lost Way of Kayotsarg
Often I have heard in stories that Shravaks and Sadhu used to contemplate during Kausagg and also used to do kausagg for hours at stretch.
But whenever we do Kausagg, we recite either Navkar or Logassa Sutra in our minds in every kausagg in pratikraman, samayik, dev vandan , chaitya vandan etc.
We dont contemplate on anything.
So what is the actual right way of doing Kausagg shown in Agamas?? Besides the physical instructions like Eyes should be nasagradrishti, legs should have little space between them and lips should be closed etc.
