Hey guys... I'm a Telugu native looking for someone to teach me heavily conversational Kannada, mainly Bengaluru slang or any slang based conversational Kannada, including neutral everyday slang. I want to learn how people actually talk with friends, including casual expressions, shortcuts and local slang, rather than formal or textbook Kannada.

Recently moved to India. I'm planning to move to Bengaluru and want to pick up conversational Kannada quickly so I can fit in and communicate naturally with locals.

ಪ to ಹ sound shift is one of the most discussed topic ever in Kannada language as ಹ sound is not native to any language rather than Hosagannada (New Kannada) and Badaga due to sound shift

Where words like ಪೆಸರ್ becomes ಹೆಸರ್ (later ಹೆಸರು), ಪತ್ತು becomes ಹತ್ತು, ಪಾಲ್ becomes ಹಾಲ್ (later ಹಾಲು) etc

Like that there was one more sound shift which was of ವ to ಬ which is least discussed about

And there were many words in Halegannada (Old Kannada) which had ವ sound as like ಪ but got changed into ಬ as like ಹ

Word like ವಾ became ಬಾ, ವನ became ಬನ, ವಾಲೆ became ಬಾಲೆ, ವಳ್ಳಿ became ಬಳ್ಳಿ etc

I'm a Kannada kid living in Bengaluru. I'm from a well educated and well off family, and I was exposed to American culture more than Indian culture growing up.

Obviously, I went to english medium school. But since I was learning Carnatic Music, I got an interest in Kannada and learnt it from books etc.

Now I notice that the majority of Kannada that I hear around me is a mix of English and Kannada. The attitude of my social circle (both native speakers and non native speakers) is that it's a means to communicate with "workers", for example your domestic help or the plumber. It is not appreciated like Urdu with its Baithaks and Ghazals. It is not respected.

It is more of a glue language, with the grammar of Kannada and connectives, like houdu, illa, matte etc with English nouns.

I feel that we are blessed to retain our langauge and that with the way we are going, Kannada will soon become a Creole. I feel sad for other indigenous cultures, like the Mexicans who now speak in Spanish and have lost their Mayan languages in daily use.

I am not very hopeful that Kannada will remain in use in the next 100 years, reason being it is Kannada not being taught in schools. Further if it is not compulsory for survival and life, no one will learn it. Add to this our reluctance to speak in our language and stand up for it.

You know what hurts the most? I couldn't write this post in Kannada. I don't have the literary ability that I have in English in my own mother tongue.

A few people asked me to for help to learn Kannada ವರ್ಣಮಾಲೆ (alphabet), so I started a series of flash cards to help people learn Kannada script.

In this part, we are covering how to read consonants when they are modified by vowels. For example the word for hand (ಕೈ or kai) is written by modifying the consonant ಕ (ka) with the dependent vowel symbol ೈ (ai).

The new web series that are in YouTube are getting so much better. ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ನೋಡಿ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದರು, ಇಷ್ಟು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿರುವ series YouTube ನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಗೆ ಯಾವಾಗ ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದರು.

Just started using Storytel and there are many kannada books and that’s great.
But, I don’t find Poorna Chandra Tejaswi and Kuvempu books. Also no TA RA SU books.

I have been observing this trend from many years. I often miss kannada language support in customer care support. Today while I am checking with LG related support I observed this and thought of posting it here. Honestly I want to bring it to the notices of company to bring in dedicated Kannada support. When we have many Global apps supporting Kannada language. It's sad that we have to demand many local companies and companies making profit since decades doesn't have support in Kannada. How can we make this happen.?

In the original text, Kuvempu has written "Basaveshwarariha Divyaranya". However on several google images, the line is "Basaveshvara Madhva divyaranya"

Next, his original line is "Kabbigarudisida Mangaladhama" but elsewhere it is "Kumaravyasana Mangaladhama".

Is it an innocuous morph over the years or is it a deliberate attempt to insert desired personalities into the song?

Telugu guy here, moved to Bengaluru about a year ago (HSR Layout). Recently switched to a remote role and now have more flexibility. I can read Kannada pretty well and speak at a basic level, but I want to improve it by leaps and bounds so I can actually hold proper conversations.

I’m fluent in German and English at a native level (spent almost 7 years in Europe and 1 year in America), and I work directly with European clients as a business consultant (AI + Embedded Systems background). I also speak elementary French and Spanish. Spent nearly 2 years in Kerala teaching German and occasionally working as a tour guide for German travellers as a side quest — so I understand the tenets of language acquisition quite well. Deeply into philosophy and an avid traveller — nearly 40 countries so far. Happy to do a proper language exchange or share insights from work, travel, or philosophy if that creates mutual value.

Looking for serious people who want consistent practice.

Also open to suggestions — any good organisations, language cafés, meetups, or places in the city where I can hang out and pick up Kannada naturally.
