Event Don't bring your petrified children to Fort Fright

Hi all. I am a scare actor at Fort Fright and have worked there since 2018. I've seen a lot of questionable things come through, as is the nature of working at a haunted attraction, but something has become a trend in recent years that I'd like to address.

Parents, guardians, family, and older siblings need to stop bringing terrified children to a haunted house.

It is listed on the Fort Henry website that Fort Fright is not recommended for children. While parental discretion is advised, I fear common sense isn't really being used lately.

I do not have children myself, so I don't fully understand the intricacies of caring for them. I understand that babysitters are expensive. Fort Fright offers a Scare Amulet/Scare Shield for 5$, and we see lots of kids come through with them. For people who give their kids amulets, this post isn't about you. Thank you for protecting your child.

This post is about adults who bring children seemingly under 5 without amulets and keep pulling them through the attraction while they're screaming in terror.

Us scare actors know what to do if a guest/guests need to be escorted out because the attraction is too intense or scary. I and a lot of my fellow actors have asked guests if they need help or to be taken out too many times to count, and it's never an issue for us or the event staff. Our job is to make sure guests have fun.

I think it's common sense to infer that a child wailing in terror is not having fun.

I don't care if you want to have fun and go through. If the child you are with is begging you to leave, LISTEN TO THEM. That doesn't even exclusively apply to children, either. If ANYONE in your party is serious about wanting to leave regardless of age or if they have a Scare Shield or not, LISTEN TO THEM. Find a scare actor and tell them you need to leave, and they will help you. We are trained to drop character and make sure the guests are okay.

Some kids have difficulty discerning when things are real, and when things are imaginary, and some are too young to make that distinction, especially when they're frightened. If you are in charge of a child, it's your responsibility to make sure they feel safe. While we have strict rules in place for both actors and guests to ensure safety, that doesn't always register in the mind of a young child. You, as the adult, know nothing will hurt them. They don't know that.

Fort Fright is supposed to be a fun horror attraction all through October. Forcing people through who are terrified and not having fun isn't okay.

Our goal is to terrify, delight, and entertain. Not to traumatize.

Disclaimer: I am not speaking on behalf of the attraction itself. I am simply a scare actor who wants all who come through to have a good experience.

Question Adopting from pet valu

I submitted an application to adopt a cat currently at Pet Valu (from the Humane Society). The worker also told me I was the first applicant for them, and I was just wondering what the typical timeline for the application process looks like as it’s my first time adopting. Thank you!🐈‍⬛🐾

Rant Internet slop food photos really turn me off local restaurants

People will feel differently about this, but I've been seeing and really dislike the number of slop-generated signs I'm seeing downtown...

  • you have a phone in your pocket, and even a chump like me can take a damn good photo with a new iPhone/Android
  • similarly, free software like Canva has a zillion free templates you can use to make signs
  • these pictures do not look like food; it's all brown moist stuff that looks like the worst dream of a 1980s station wagon
  • if you don't care about quality control or craft for your sign, why on earth would I trust you with my food?

Now, I can hear the complaint: "it's too hard! It takes too long! It's not possible for one mere human to make the kinds of artful designs that this environmentally destructive, creatively bankrupt engine of horror can make!"

Friends, I put that to the test. I challenged myself to make an outdoor sign for a restaurant. 30 minutes later, I had this, using only my phone and entirely free design options on Canva. It is entirely possible to make kind of shit posters using real photography, instead of kind of shit posters using AI. Check out this masterpiece!

I promise you, this took >30 minutes from start to finish, including exporting a print-ready PDF.

Clearly some people are going to how dare you about this, but I'm just saying for me, personally, AI food photos are a way Nature tells me a restaurant is not to be trusted with my mouth, health, or dollars.

Question Online voting - City Website says registration is closed but my voter letter says it’s open until 5pm today

I went to the city of Kingston website to register to online vote and it says voter registration is closed for online voting and I need to go in person. I then used the URL on my voter card and I was able to register to online vote just now. Why the inconsistency? Anyone know? I don’t want other potential online voters to be deterred.

Question 1316 Princess St Apartments

I'm not finding any reviews on this apartment building after searching. I know it's a large, mixed-unit building and I'm not expecting perfection. Is it unsafe, filthy, or does it have severe bug problems? Thank you in advance!

Rant Candidates using AI

The city council candidates using AI is ridiculous. There are some editing or creating pictures of themselves. Others are using it to fake campaign signs or write their entire website. This is NOT just aimed at Kevin Smith. There are a handful of candidates that are using so much AI. I won’t vote for you if you can’t even write your own platform

Question Anyone know where I can buy bannock in the city?

Exactly what the title says. I can't make it because I'm a student living in residence + have never made it.

Edit: I'm not Indigenous. I realize now the vagueness of my post has caused some confusion in that regard-- sorry about that! Hope some of the suggestions given in the comments because of that assumption helps some others find resources though.

Recommendation Needed Night Shift

Hello Kingston! I'm a 24 year old dude, about to be done parental leave a little sooner than expected. I'm only gonna be able to do night shifts for the foreseeable future, does anyone know any places that are hiring that might not be on indeed? I've already applied to Walmart and Rona. Any suggestions or info would be seriously appreciated! If this isn't allowed I'm sorry and feel free to take it down!

Discussion Election Day is tomorrow. Do you think there will be any surprises?

So far, based on what others have posted and online reddit polls it looks like steady as she goes, with incumbents.coming back.

I think if there's a big change, it'll be Patterson losing, but that seems unlikely.

But maybe Chavez will lose too. Not sure if any others are in trouble. What do you think?

13 chairs in the park and at the visitor center.

Runs taken not broken.

I have reported this since the summer.

They were bought by the downtown Bia and given too the city.

Really shows how we treat guests to the city. All I get is a it's not my problem.

Who's going to fix them

Appreciation It’s a good life if you don’t weaken - Grand theater

I went to see this Jukebox Musical yesterday. Without realizing it we ended up sitting beside one of the writers, Jesse LaVercombe. I recognized him as Jack Walker from Murdoch Mysteries.

The play was excellent, I cried, I laughed, the set was amazing and I loved the music! The actors did a truly moving rendition of my favourite Hip song, Wheat Kings.

All in all I would highly recommend and I would definitely go see it again.
