Rant Enercare rental water heater leaked, damaged my home, and now they want $2,000+ to let me out of the contract. Any advice? (Ontario)

I’m in Kingston, Ontario, and wondering whether anyone has dealt with a similar situation with Enercare or has advice about my rights as a consumer.
Here’s what happened:
Saturday, October 24: I discovered that my rented Rinnai tankless water heater was leaking. Water had accumulated in the utility closet and spread into an adjoining bedroom, soaking part of the carpet. I called Enercare’s emergency service line, but was told nobody could come until Monday afternoon. I spent the weekend trying to contain the leak and prevent further damage.
Monday, October 26: An Enercare technician finally arrived. He said he would have preferred to replace the unit, but his manager had instructed him to repair it instead. He shut off the hot-water supply and ordered a replacement part.
Repair timeline: The technician said the part might arrive Thursday, but there was no confirmed repair date. When I called customer service, I was told restoring hot water could take anywhere from five days to two business weeks.
No functioning showers: Since the technician shut off the hot water, neither of our two showers works at all—not even on the cold setting. Cold water still runs from the sinks, so my elderly mother and I are reduced to washing at the sink.
Cancellation: I asked Enercare to release me from the rental agreement so I could purchase my own water heater and arrange installation. The representative told me I would have to pay over $2,000 to cancel or buy out the broken equipment.
I’m paying approximately $58 per month for the rental, for over four years, which includes repairs and maintenance. The equipment has now caused property damage, and we’re facing potentially weeks without hot water or functioning showers. I’ve also had to take time off work to deal with the situation.
I’ve spent hours dealing with customer service, including lengthy holds, and have been unable to get a clear resolution or speak to someone with authority to make a decision.

Has anyone successfully gotten out of an Enercare water-heater rental agreement without paying a buyout when the equipment failed?
Does anyone know whether Enercare has contractual obligations to restore hot water within a reasonable period, particularly when its equipment has caused property damage?
Has anyone successfully obtained compensation from Enercare for water damage or expenses incurred because of delayed service?
Is Consumer Protection Ontario the right avenue, or should I be considering Small Claims Court or another form of legal action?
Does anyone know whether a plumber can safely restore cold-water flow to single-handle showers while keeping the leaking heater isolated?
I’m particularly interested in hearing from people in Ontario who’ve dealt with Enercare, rental water-heater contracts, or similar consumer disputes.
Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I submitted an application to adopt a cat currently at Pet Valu (from the Humane Society). The worker also told me I was the first applicant for them, and I was just wondering what the typical timeline for the application process looks like as it’s my first time adopting. Thank you!🐈‍⬛🐾

Event Don't bring your petrified children to Fort Fright

Hi all. I am a scare actor at Fort Fright and have worked there since 2018. I've seen a lot of questionable things come through, as is the nature of working at a haunted attraction, but something has become a trend in recent years that I'd like to address.

Parents, guardians, family, and older siblings need to stop bringing terrified children to a haunted house.

It is listed on the Fort Henry website that Fort Fright is not recommended for children. While parental discretion is advised, I fear common sense isn't really being used lately.

I do not have children myself, so I don't fully understand the intricacies of caring for them. I understand that babysitters are expensive. Fort Fright offers a Scare Amulet/Scare Shield for 5$, and we see lots of kids come through with them. For people who give their kids amulets, this post isn't about you. Thank you for protecting your child.

This post is about adults who bring children seemingly under 5 without amulets and keep pulling them through the attraction while they're screaming in terror.

Us scare actors know what to do if a guest/guests need to be escorted out because the attraction is too intense or scary. I and a lot of my fellow actors have asked guests if they need help or to be taken out too many times to count, and it's never an issue for us or the event staff. Our job is to make sure guests have fun.

I think it's common sense to infer that a child wailing in terror is not having fun.

I don't care if you want to have fun and go through. If the child you are with is begging you to leave, LISTEN TO THEM. That doesn't even exclusively apply to children, either. If ANYONE in your party is serious about wanting to leave regardless of age or if they have a Scare Shield or not, LISTEN TO THEM. Find a scare actor and tell them you need to leave, and they will help you. We are trained to drop character and make sure the guests are okay.

Some kids have difficulty discerning when things are real, and when things are imaginary, and some are too young to make that distinction, especially when they're frightened. If you are in charge of a child, it's your responsibility to make sure they feel safe. While we have strict rules in place for both actors and guests to ensure safety, that doesn't always register in the mind of a young child. You, as the adult, know nothing will hurt them. They don't know that.

Fort Fright is supposed to be a fun horror attraction all through October. Forcing people through who are terrified and not having fun isn't okay.

Our goal is to terrify, delight, and entertain. Not to traumatize.

Disclaimer: I am not speaking on behalf of the attraction itself. I am simply a scare actor who wants all who come through to have a good experience.

Discussion Elections

• Upvotes

I’m prepared to get downvoted to filth because democratic duty and all that jazz however as someone who has entirely lost faith in all forms of government do people really think the person they’re voting for is actually going to do anything to gainfully better the lives of their voters?

I’ve read a few platforms and it just sounds like buzz words and empty promises without concrete plans or the power to even execute on them. I have yet to see a politician who doesn’t spew the perfect drivel to garnish votes and then turn around and make decisions that solely benefit their own personal gain.

Kudos to everyone who has faith in the system but I’ll be shocked if whomever is elected makes any ounce of difference.

Rant Internet slop food photos really turn me off local restaurants

People will feel differently about this, but I've been seeing and really dislike the number of slop-generated signs I'm seeing downtown...

  • you have a phone in your pocket, and even a chump like me can take a damn good photo with a new iPhone/Android
  • similarly, free software like Canva has a zillion free templates you can use to make signs
  • these pictures do not look like food; it's all brown moist stuff that looks like the worst dream of a 1980s station wagon
  • if you don't care about quality control or craft for your sign, why on earth would I trust you with my food?

Now, I can hear the complaint: "it's too hard! It takes too long! It's not possible for one mere human to make the kinds of artful designs that this environmentally destructive, creatively bankrupt engine of horror can make!"

Friends, I put that to the test. I challenged myself to make an outdoor sign for a restaurant. 30 minutes later, I had this, using only my phone and entirely free design options on Canva. It is entirely possible to make kind of shit posters using real photography, instead of kind of shit posters using AI. Check out this masterpiece!

I promise you, this took >30 minutes from start to finish, including exporting a print-ready PDF.

Clearly some people are going to how dare you about this, but I'm just saying for me, personally, AI food photos are a way Nature tells me a restaurant is not to be trusted with my mouth, health, or dollars.

Question Online voting - City Website says registration is closed but my voter letter says it’s open until 5pm today

I went to the city of Kingston website to register to online vote and it says voter registration is closed for online voting and I need to go in person. I then used the URL on my voter card and I was able to register to online vote just now. Why the inconsistency? Anyone know? I don’t want other potential online voters to be deterred.
