How to fix crashes when google-chrome corrupts your font cache
If you use Google Chrome, you may notice that after a recent upgrade, various KDE applications crash, and plasmashell gets stuck in a crash loop if you reboot. Chrome is writing corrupt fontconfig cache data that's making things go weird. If this is happening to you, rm -rf ~/.cache/fontconfig and reboot, this should get your system working again. Then after launching Chrome, pop open Konsole and run rm -rf ~/.cache/fontconfig again to erase the corrupt data before it can mess anything else up (and then close the Konsole window you just opened since it will have the corrupt data loaded in potentially and could crash at any time).

Kubuntu freezes due to memory shortage
Hello,
I'd like to start by saying that I'm a complete noob when it comes to Linux. I recently installed Kubuntu on my old Surface Pro 4 since I wanted to start using it again and the Windows installation got very slow. I also was interested in trying Linux.
I now ran into an issue where it would freeze whenever I use a browser. It did not do this before. I just started installing some programs/apps on it: Vivaldi browser, vlc, Proton mail, firefox, some widgets. That's it.
It now sits at > 2Gb Memory usage when idle (my surface has 4Gb ram) and freezes whenever I use a browser (1 tab open). I removed all widgets from the desktop, did a restart. According to System Monitor I dont see a specific program that takes up the ram.
I'm at a loss here.

Assistance with understanding how Partition Manager handles space
galleryCould anyone shed some light on how KDE PM sees less space available on the very same pendrive?
And to be honest, never before I've delved into this topic that much, hence have only the very superficial understanding of how storage works. So, please, bear with possible nuisances
To give a better understanding it all started with just missing only one MB of storage after deleting all partition on a pendrive. Just 7398 MB while I had clear memories of diskpart.exe once showing 7399. Checked it with Gparted ... 7399. Took a look at space alignment... Nope, somehow I couldn't reproduce that with Partition Manager. What's more, the number of sectors itself is different. Even considering the LBA block...
Obviously I took some time and effort to find an answer myself, though at the current moment my effort seem to be a pursuit of a black cat in a room with no power. Thus, could anyone help me with understanding the situation? This 1 MB might have been tolerable, bit with the sector discrepancy it's driving me insane
All shots are from Kubuntu 26.10, but I saw the same behaviour on Debian 13.7 before it (As I said previously, bear with it, I know that Debian isn't something to not frown upon when it comes to playing with KDE)

Error installing Kubuntu 26.10
I keep getting error at installing Kubuntu, once the animation starts with 4 dots nothing happens. If I press alt+any key I get errors that archive.ubuntu.com security.ubuntu.com resolution failed but I can open them perfectly fine on other PCs. Has anyone seen this problem before?

Is Kubuntu Security Broken?
I like to use an email client to view and manage my email on an imap mail server. I do not choose to have my password stored by the program, I remember my passwords and prefer to type them in. I have tried Thunderbird and Evolution and both fail to prompt for my password after I boot the computer and launch the program. If I go into Evolution's settings, tell it to forget the password, close Evolution and wait long enough, it may ask for the password before failing to connect to the IMAP server. Thunderbird is similar. Both appear to be timing issues waiting for some kind of memory clean up or similar process. What is broken?

[Fix] ASUS TUF F15 (FX507VV) on Kubuntu: internal keyboard / power button / lid won't wake from s2idle — LID0 missing _PRW, fixed with a 93-byte SSDT
Inspiration & credit: this fix is adapted from a Reddit post about the FX507Z series (BIOS 330) on r/Ubuntu: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/1x7v4bx/fix_asus_tuf_f15_fx507z_bios_330_wont_wake_from/ . That post pointed at the missing ACPI wake entry for the lid. I used AI assistance to walk through the DSDT disassembly, confirm the active LID0 path on my specific machine, and put together the commands below. Sharing it here because the same class of BIOS 330 defect shows up on multiple FX507 variants, and Kubuntu users are likely to hit it too.
System: ASUS TUF Gaming F15 FX507VV_FX507VV (BIOS 330) · 13th Gen Intel i7-13700H · Iris Xe + NVIDIA RTX 4060 Max-Q · Kubuntu 26.04.1 LTS · kernel 7.0.0-38-generic · sleep mode s2idle.
Symptoms
systemctl suspendor closing the lid puts the machine to sleep normally (power LED breathes, fans/backlight off).- Internal keyboard, power button, and lid opening do nothing. The only way to wake it is a USB wireless mouse that was connected before suspend.
journalctlends atPM: suspend entry (s2idle)with nosuspend exit.- This is not a freeze. The EC thinks it is asleep; the wake event never reaches the CPU.
Quick check
bash
grep LID0 /proc/acpi/wakeup
If this returns nothing, you likely have the same defect. The active lid device _SB.PC00.LPCB.LID0 lacks a _PRW object. The EC’s wake events for lid, power button, and keyboard arrive on GPE 0x02 (_GPE._L02 → ECLV()), but because no device claims that GPE for wake, Linux does not keep it armed during s2idle.
It is not NVIDIA-related: blacklisting the NVIDIA driver still reproduces the failure. It is also not a kernel regression; the DSDT is independent of the kernel.
Fix: 93-byte SSDT injecting _PRW (0x02, Zero) into the active LID0
1. Confirm the active LID0 path on your machine
bash
sudo apt install acpica-tools
mkdir ~/acpi-fix && cd ~/acpi-fix
sudo cat /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/DSDT > dsdt.dat
iasl -d dsdt.dat
grep -n "Device (LID0)" dsdt.dsl
On my FX507VV there are two LID0 entries:
- one under
_SB.PC00.LPCB.H_ECwith_STAreturningZero(disabled — ignore); - one under
_SB.PC00.LPCBwith no_PRW(this is the active one).
Confirm the parent scope of the active one:
bash
awk 'NR < 115473 && /^[[:space:]]*Scope/ {print NR": "$0}' dsdt.dsl | tail -3
# output includes: 114497: Scope (_SB.PC00.LPCB)
Active path on my machine: _SB.PC00.LPCB.LID0. Your path may differ; use your own awk output.
2. Create and compile the SSDT
bash
cat > ssdt-lidwake.asl <<'EOF'
DefinitionBlock ("", "SSDT", 2, "FIXUP", "LIDWAKE", 0x00000001)
{
External (_SB.PC00.LPCB.LID0, DeviceObj)
Scope (_SB.PC00.LPCB.LID0)
{
Name (_PRW, Package (0x02) { 0x02, Zero })
}
}
EOF
iasl -tc ssdt-lidwake.asl
Expected: Compilation successful. 0 Errors, 0 Warnings, ~93 bytes AML.
3. Package as early initrd and place in /boot
bash
mkdir -p cpio/kernel/firmware/acpi
cp ssdt-lidwake.aml cpio/kernel/firmware/acpi/
(cd cpio && find kernel | cpio -H newc --create --owner=0:0 > ../acpi_override.cpio)
sudo cp acpi_override.cpio /boot/
4. Configure GRUB (check syntax first!)
bash
sh -n /etc/default/grub
# no output = syntax OK
echo 'GRUB_EARLY_INITRD_LINUX_CUSTOM="acpi_override.cpio"' | sudo tee -a /etc/default/grub
sudo update-grub
Look for Found initrd image: /boot/acpi_override.cpio /boot/initrd.img-... in the output. This survives kernel updates — just run sudo update-grub again after a kernel upgrade.
5. Reboot and verify
bash
journalctl -b -k | grep -i "Table Upgrade"
# ACPI: Table Upgrade: install [SSDT- FIXUP- LIDWAKE]
grep LID0 /proc/acpi/wakeup
# LID0 S0 *enabled platform:PNP0C0D:01
After this, keyboard, power button, and lid all wake the machine on my FX507VV.
Rollback
bash
sudo sed -i '/GRUB_EARLY_INITRD_LINUX_CUSTOM/d' /etc/default/grub
sudo rm /boot/acpi_override.cpio
sudo update-grub
If the machine ever fails to boot, press e in the GRUB menu and remove /boot/acpi_override.cpio from the initrd line for a one-time bypass.
Notes
- A sister model (FX507ZI4, same BIOS 330) has the same
LID0_PRWomission and is fixed by the identical injection. This looks like a BIOS-level omission across the FX507 series, not a one-off board. - I also filed upstream reports if anyone wants to follow progress: Linux kernel Bugzilla and Ubuntu Launchpad (links in comments if useful).
- Touchpad wake is a separate issue (
GpioIntdeclared asExclusiverather thanExclusiveAndWake); not fixed here.
Hope this saves someone else a few evenings. If you have another FX507 variant, checking grep LID0 /proc/acpi/wakeup is a 1-second way to know whether you are affected.

KDE Why is the desktop flickering? This didn't happen in previous versions.
Kubuntu 26.10. Intel Core ultra 235. iGPU. No any video card
It's all in the video.
The wallpaper sometimes flickers over apps.
This didn't happen in Kubuntu 25.10.
I skipped 26.04.
This is happening in Kubuntu 26.10.

I'm having a problem with HDMI and a smart TV.
When I'm on an HDMI connection to a smart TV everything works fine however when I close my laptop lid like in the picture all I see is the background image of the desktop and not my actual screen. How can I close the laptop and not have this issue?
Since Ubuntu 26.10 is released, when will us Kubuntu 26.04.01 users be able to upgrade?
Hi,
I'm not familiar with the whole release process. Shouldn't Kubuntu 26.10 be out already? I've already set /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades "Prompt" to "normal". How does this work?
Thank you for your insight.

I've been trying to use this distro for about half a year and the constant bugs and glitches make it impossible for me to get anything done. Dolphin constantly crashes, the toolbar constantly freezes... I don't get why people recommend this thing.

Audio defaults
Using kubuntu ( previous to 2026 it's release).
When i use Microsoft teams, to join a call via Chrome, my audio defaults are usually mixed up. For example the output is set to my shure mic, input is via webcam or some other crazy combination. Today I joined the call, my mic worked but couldn't hear anything.....by chance I looked at the audio tab to see the volume specific to Chrome was muted!
This happens much less frequently with Google meet ( the best ) or zoom.
Is this a me thing, a teams thing or a Linux thing?
Yes I know upgrade to latest lts.... just need to finish projects before system move.

AMD GPU driver update timeline?
From what I understand, since AMD drivers are open source they get baked into the linux kernel, but what is the timeframe between AMD releasing driver updates and those updates getting pushed into the LTS builds? Is it worth updating the drivers straight from AMD?

Recently upgraded to 26.04LTS I have this weird pixel smear effect occurring randomly
I recently upgraded from 24.06 LTS I think, to 26.04LTS.
I've noticed since the change was made that I now have this weird darkblue/purple pixel smear occur on my screens, I don't know how to describe it, its not a smear or artifact of thaws on screen, Its like a pixelated mass, its spread out but theirs no smoothing its all squares.
This only started after the upgrade and happens on any of my 3 screens. It happens randomly, their doesn't seem to be an issue with performance of what I'm doing at the time, it has happened while watching videos, gaming, using krita, looking through files, and just browsing the internet with firefox. It doesn't happen often, but when I notice it its a little concerning.
Is this a known bug that's being worked on? do I need to change some of my PC settings to resolve this?

Any guides or tutorials on how to move my Kubuntu install from one drive to the other?
I have my 26.10 install on a EXT4 partition in my secondary 4TB SSD game drive, with the main OS 2TB SSD housing my old windows install I kept just in case.
Well, I just got a 512GB SSD, moved windows to that and emptied my main 2TB SSD so I can use it for Kubuntu and leave the 4TB one as my game and file drive. Moving windows to that SSD was easy because of Disk Genius but I have no idea what tool would be best for Linux.
Ideally, I just clone the partition onto the 2TB drive and then expand it to fill the empty space but most sources I've seen say I'll also have to change some UUID or the fstab
Since the process seems to be more involved than I expected, does anyone have a good guide or video tutorial on how to do this step by step? I'm still fairly new to Linux so I need all the help I can get.
