Travel | Саякат What you should consider before traveling to Kyrgyzstan
While Kyrgyzstan is a great country and I'm not trying to discourage travel, I see a lot of people on social media who seemingly fly halfway around the world without doing a modicum of research, and so I wanted to highlight what the Instagram reels don't mention so people are more aware.
Like much of Central Asia, the air quality is really bad, like literally some of the worst in the world. Even in smaller towns it can be bad because the mountains prevent air from dissipating and burning coal for heating is still common. If you have any underlying health conditions, you should consider how they might be exacerbated by traveling here.
Health care isn't up to Western standards. If you need to go to a hospital, it's unlikely that anyone will speak English, and you can't expect them to advocate for you or help you navigate the system.
Food safety is...questionable. I know an incredibly large percentage of tourists that have gotten food poisoning. This can combine unpleasantly with the above and below point.
Bathrooms outside cities are primitive and limited. I'm sure you can find photos if you need more vivid imagery.
There is no mountain rescue service, and guides aren't necessarily certified or carrying first aid equipment. Hiking trips are best taken by experienced hikers who bring their own kit with them and are capable of independent navigation in the event of an emergency.
Don't be the idiot that buys a horse.
