mod post Israel/Palestine discussion

After some mod discussion…

Posts about IWI guns, or accessories from Israeli manufacturers (or sometimes even posts about completely-unrelated topics!) quickly become a discussion of Israel/Palestine politics. There are plenty of more appropriate places to have those discussions on Al Gore's internet. Comments stronger than "I'll never buy IWI" will be removed, and users will potentially be banned after repeated offenses. Stick to talking about the guns.

This will be folded into the "topicality" rule in the near future, but this sticky post serves in the stead of that change.

politics Anyone else nervous about the next few months through January?

Post image
• Upvotes

I am nervous about what will happen if the dems win one or both houses, key governorships, statehouses, etc. It is not unrealistic to see Mike Johnson on Jan 3 refusing to seat the newly elected dems crying voter fraud elected them all. Trump could try to litigate each ballot he doesn’t like. He could also call for another illegal insurrection activity in local or national arenas. ICE is his personal gestapo and Hegseth has been replacing all the top military brass with people who will kiss the ring. There are so many possibilities ranging from ludicrous to very plausible.

I thought I was overly paranoid about all this, but I remember thinking January 6th wasn’t a possibility. Are some of you thinking going full prepper and make your home a fortress? Anyone thinking they need a few thousand more rounds?

For me, I am not going to mail in my ballot, but drop it off at an official drop box. I have plenty of ammo and plenty of reloading materials. I have stockpiles of emergency food, water, first aid, etc., since I live in both fire and earthquake country. While those are great to have if the super SHTF scenario hits, I think the best preps is building community and neighborhood connections and groups, working with neighbors and friends and such. I suggest finding good sources of information and back ups to them if they disappear. Find effective local mutual aid groups and organizations in your area. I believe finding peaceful, positive ways to fight fascism, help ensure equality, help those who need it is the most important way to be part of this. With all that said, my CCW will be on me a lot more of the time, while respecting the local laws of where they are no-nos. I will be avoiding large crowds or events unless it is something I really believe in.

I am hoping that the electorate votes the needed changes and things go peacefully. I also hope we don’t see weird buffalo-shaman guy in an insurrection again. What are your thoughts, ideas, and considerations?

PS - The photo of my partner’s beautiful SW Model 19-6 is for grabbing attention. I don’t deny that.

discussion Hunter encounter

So Mrs. Batches and I were backpacking in a federally designated wilderness area this weekend when we ran into a couple of hunters. They were on their way out while we were heading in. They were fully reflective gear kitted out and were hand carrying their shotguns. We made a bit of small talk and asked how the hunting was out there. They said they found nothing and we said our goodbyes.

Now prior to our entry into gun ownership last year, Mrs. Batches was completely anti-gun, and this encounter would have freaked her out. But instead she just remarked to me after they were out of earshot that they would have a much easier hike out if they had slings on their shotguns.

(Edit: I stand corrected about slings and shotguns being used while hunting. I did not know that they are not typical. But this being a wilderness area, you have to hike or stock it in, and we were at least 5 miles from the trailhead. So I ask honestly if this would change things)

So thanks to this group for helping us along the path of responsible ownership.

(Second edit: Of course after we passed them, their were quail all over the place. Those little fuckers were everywhere!)

training LBE LARPing ft. a surprise visit from a moose

Beautiful fall day in the PNW for a LARP session out in the woods with a buddy, got a great chance to check that my budget LBE setup is dialed in. Apart from a few small changes coming, I'm very happy with the function and comfort of my basic condor setup. The pouches all seem to be good quality, the belt itself is my biggest concern. If there is any interest in the specific setup I would be happy to post the belt itself and its contents and link it here.

Bonus pics at the end of the moose that wandered into the brush just past the clearing as we set up on a ridge!

training Maryland - Going to Gunsite Academy (Maybe)

So, anyone in Maryland on here who wants to meet up? I'm looking for a buddy to possibly go to Gunsite Academy next year during one of their buddy promotion weeks. I'd like to have at least one other person in the week-long training who is liberal. I thought this might be a good place to look.

Thanks!

Hosting a Range Day in the San Antonio area early next month. This is a reoccurring event, on the second Sunday of every month. DM me for details, some vetting required. We aren't shy about our political positions, but as long as you fall left of center, you should fit right in!

gear Comfortable eye pro that looks like normal glasses?

Post image

I’ve been using these, but I hate the way they fit. I was looking for eye pro with straighter legs, so it’d be more comfortable to wear with a hat.

Anyone here have any suggestions? Stoggles look decent and they have transition lenses for outdoor/indoor use, but they’re more geared towards medical professionals. I doubt they’re rated for firearms.

I just want something comfortable that doesn’t look like I’m cosplaying as a cop.

guns Found an agency trade in stainless Mini 14 and I am going for it! Wish me luck!

I have been wanting a Mini 14 for a while but the "gun people" I know would always talk about how bad it was. They would say how much better the AR is. Granted, AR's are better performer's and I have had a couple of them, but I like old guns. I have had my lever action for 15 years and my revolver for about the same. I love them and I hope this is the same.

politics 2A, gun ownership, and gun violence

I'm new to this sub, so apologies if this isn't allowed or I'm in the wrong spot.

I've been struggling really hard the last few years over what the "right" answers would be to reducing gun violence, particularly mass shootings. The main reason I grapple so intensely with this is because I am a gun owner and I passionately believe that we have a right in America to own firearms. At the same time, we've seen some absolutely horrific mass shootings over the past 15 years and more, and the number seems to keep increasing. I also live in a state where it would not be surprising to see an "assault weapons" ban in the next five years, and that's tremendously concerning to me, but I can also understand why people are fed up with mass shootings.

So, how do I, as a responsible gun owner, interact with people that are strongly for weapons bans or restrictions? And are there areas that compromise can be had? For instance, it has long seemed paradoxical that in order for me to drive a car, I need to pass an exam and demonstrate a minimum level of competence, but I could walk into my local sporting goods store and walk out in an hour with a firearm with virtually no questions asked. At the same time, how many hoops should I as a citizen have to jump through to exercise a constitutional right?

I guess what I'm getting at is this - are there reasonable steps that could be taken to reduce the frequency of mass shootings without infringing on 2A rights? I genuinely don't know the answer. I also know that if we invested to anywhere near the level that we should on mental health support in this country, this would be a much easier conversation to have, but that's not the world we're currently living in.

I would love to hear thoughts from people that have thought about these issues longer and more thoughtfully than I have. I don't know how to feel. I just know that I don't want my ability to acquire firearms to be taken away, and I want my community to be safe. I'm sure these aren't mutually exclusive ideas.

UPDATE: I want to thank you all for taking the time to respond, this has been really educational for me and your replies have been very thoughtful and intelligent. My views have definitely changed how I approach the issue thanks to all of you, and I appreciate the great discussion!

guns The Retay RXP22 - a review

Post image
20 Upvotes

TLDR; cheap, but certainly worth the money for a hammer DA/SA range pistol & trainer.

Retay is yet another cheap Turkish gun manufacturer & the RXP22 is their recent introduction into the 22LR pistol market. I saw it earlier this fall while browsing the local gun show and was interested - cheap and not-normal 22s are my thing, and this certainly fits the bill. My last DA/SA 22 was the lamentably awful (ATI) GSG Firefly, aka the Sig-branded Mosquito.

This thing beats the pants off the Firefly. Not that's hard, since my dead grandmother could more reliably throw rounds at a target than that thing, but the RXP's not a bad gun. It's not quite the Taurus TX22 or Ruger Mark IV in my book yet, but its no slouch.

For $200 on sale, less than the Firefly!, you get a far more dependable pistol with a threaded barrel and an RMR/RMSc cut, larger magazines of 13 & 20 rounds. And from what I can tell, it's quite accurate. The 13 round magazine is intentionally steel to simulate a larger caliber 9mm pistol for training, which sorta works. I'll have to think about it and try it intentionally as a 2nd CZ Nocturne side-by-side next time.

It does have some break-in, definitely needs some lube out of the box, and it hates bad 22 ammo (who doesn't?), but it settled out and got consistent in about 50 rounds. It hated Aguila wax, but ate Federal LRN & CPRN reliably.

As you can see, I took it out with my beloved SR22 micro with irons only because they're both fixed barrels. (Ignore the center targets, I was adjusting and tuning things) I was off on my irons today, and I think it was because the SR22's more pronounced snap confused my reflexes. The RXP definitely has a lot more mass even with the polymer mags and I wasn't prepared after shooting a couple of magazines in the RXP. Both of the labelled individual targets were at 5 & 10 yd. Once I got the shanks out, I felt like they both did well at 13yd.

Not a bad cheap 22.

question Gun Safe identification?

Post image

I inherited an old gun safe. I don’t know exactly how old, or even what model it is. Can’t find any useful marking on it…

Anybody recognize it or know where I can go to look? Can’t seem to find any comprehensive sources online!

question Competition Rigs - What is the meta?

Once upon a time I was a halfway decent USPSA shooter and thoroughly enjoyed it. I want to get back into it at some point, but I've been away for so long that I legitimately don't know what people are rockin these days...

I used to run a Blade-Tech Inner/Outer comp belt/drop holster with a hodgepodge of DoubleAlpha and Blade-Tech mag pouches for my Production division setup.

Where I live, there are a lot more outlaw style matches and organizations than true IPDA/IPSC/USPSA matches, which leads me to my search for a new rig that can both satisfy the following:

- Low profile battle belt, used solo for comp and then in conjunction with a full plate carrier for.. other shenanigans

- Preferably modular holster system (duty gun for outlaw matches and safe princess for USPSA), I know Blade-Tech offers the drop-in puck system but anything else exists?

discussion Is the AK vs AR argument dead now?

Ukraine has been trying to acquire AR platform rifles hand over fist.

pretty much every unit that can afford to transition their troops are doing so after several years of conventional war.

they started with about all the AK patterned rifles that you could want, so it if they were a comparable platform it would make sense to stick with them and spend the money they’d save by not transitioning on more ammo, more NVGs/thermals, more traditional optics, etc.

on top of that, there’s been a lot of reports that daniel defense rifles are considered the holy grail for Ukrainian troops.

this tells me that the AK platform is flat out inferior for military use, and that the argument between the two is over.
