Shitpost A Lawyer, a Doctor & an Engineer

A doctor, a lawyer, and an engineer were waiting to be guillotined by the Taliban.

They tested it by chopping off the head of a goat. They dragged over the doctor. "Do you have anything to say?" "Why kill me? I'm a doctor. I can treat your sick and injured." "off with his head!" shouted the mullah. The crowd roared. The doctor was stuffed into postition, the executioner jerked the lanyard and - nothing heppened. They took the doctor out and tried it on a goat. Chop! It worked perfectly.

A big cry went up from the crowd. "Spare the doctor. It is the will of God!" And the doctor was freed.

Next they dragged up the lawyer. "'I'm a lawyer. I can represent your cause before the world court..." he was stuffed into the guillotine... the lanyard... nothing happened...the goat... the crowd "..the will of God" and the lawyer was freed.

Next they dragged up the engineer. He said: "There's a burr that stops the latch lever every other pull. Gimme a file and I could dress it off."

Mostly a woodworker but the machine shop supervisor lets me play around sometimes. Did some manual machining on the lathe. The parting cuts on the screws all have this spiral pattern. I'll be keeping it.

Soft jaws for hold sq stock

Thumbnail

Hello everyone,

I’m not a machinist. But I’ve been tasked with making some soft jaws for a square piece of stock. We need to put a tight tolerance bore into the part and it will be easier to hold on the lathe. The stock will be finished machined so it isn’t rough stock. The part would be sitting 2 inches into the jaws and is about 3.5 inches tall.

Will these work for that? Will they be accurate enough for a .008” True Position tolerance? Is there anything I should be aware of and change before we make them?

Thanks in advance!

QUESTION Best country for CNC

• Upvotes

Hello everyone
I have been working as a machine setter for one year and as a CNC programmer for a year and a half. Since I’m based in Bulgaria and local salaries are quite low, I am planning to move abroad once my current contract ends in a year.
My question is: Which countries currently offer the best opportunities, salaries, and working conditions for CNC programmers and setters

Question for an Artillery Barrel Machinist

• Upvotes

Good morning everyone. I'm curious how chambers for wwii era Artillery were cut. Does anyone know? Specifically the 37x223r cartridge, which is 37mm x 223mm rimmed.

I have chambered before, but on the little guys I use a finish reamer to size and lots of oil.

How was it done back in the 30s and 40s?

I recently acquired a lathe and mill and don't know what these parts are for:

The lathe is a Colchester Bantam and the Mill is an Adcock & Shipley model 0. The were originally purchased as an auction lot from a factory that was closing down and may have included parts that were thrown in that didn't match the machines just to get rid of them.

What is causing this corrosion?

Thumbnail

We have this Main shaft used on a liquifier that every so often has to be completely replaced because the bearingraces are corroded tightly to the shafts matingsurface so that we have to anglegrind them Off.

Bearingraces are made out of cast Iron from what i can Tell, the shaft is 42CrMoV4 QT.

Im Not the maintainers but i think they tried both with and without Grease between the surfaces and it didnt make a difference.

The fit is a Clearance fit with 0,01-0,015mm Clearance (Diameter 36,53mm).

I thought it might be the Same Type of wear that you Sometimes See on milling toolholders where there is too much Play between the toolholder shank and the spindle taper and they bang into each other when milling but im Not Sure?

Maybe some of you got better ideas.

Well I think I'm out

Unfortunately I think I'm out guys. I've been working for a small machine shop for the last year and a half. I got hired with no experience, but I took on pretty quick, I mostly ran manual lathe and some 2axis . Recently my owners got a new lathe and a 3axis that was supposed to be my specialty ( everyone else in the shop has 0 computer skills) i took to the cam software and everything very well but we never got the work for the machine. Long story short I got laid off with an " I'll let you come back in when we get the work" and I'm not going to be essentially a free lance programmer for what they pay and I'm not qualified enough to realistically apply for another job. It's been fun though everyone. Best of luck

QUESTION What to do with my desktop injection mold machine?

I made the terrible decision of buying a used APSX injection molding machine for a side work, and after 2 years of owning it, I haven't found any jobs for it. I'm considering selling it at a loss. What would you do in my position? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Knurling Question

Hi everyone I wanted to get an understanding of what type of specifications you guys are used to seeing on your prints when it comes to knurling.

I'm currently running into issues with a supplier who's providing a diamond knurl wheel. I have an ASTM standard for the knurling but the knurls are coming in with caved in centers for the diamonds.

In my experience that's a shop issue not a print issue.

Any advice is truly appreciated.

More money for less experience?

Hey everyone,

I've been lurking here for a while and soaking up advice but now I'm not to sure if I'm in the right spot tor my career.

I previously worked in a decent sized “job shop” for about 8 years. Learned a lot. They were pretty decent with raises here and there as I grew my skills. Mostly in CNC lathe/mill turn.

I was running production for a few weeks and decided to update my resume(I've been told a lot that job hoping can be good for growth). Got an opportunity at a company with very competitive offer. So I took it.

Thing is, it's pretty simple work(basically weld prep). It's not a bad place to be I guess. This new company is growing and investing in the shop. I just can't help but feel it'll stunt my growth as a machinist as opposed to a job shop with tighter tolerances that challenge you everyday. But the low stress and higher pay might be worth it.

What would you have done? I know there's obviously details left out, I'll try to answer but I also don't think I need to write an essay.

Made some (mini) moves

Earlier this year I bought a 1st gen Mini Mill. My shop has been sitting more or less idle for a few years since going full time as a machinist at my company. This opportunity came up to upgrade my little fab shop and decided to go for it. I have moved on from the shop floor at work but really like working as a machinist. I have some parts I'd like to make and sell in the future but for now I'm getting set up.

The machine is in good shape for its age. Low hours and bought it from the original owner who used it to get his business off the ground out of his garage.

I don't have a lot of space so I moved a lot of equipment and machinery that was no longer needed out of the shop. After plumbing/power/leveling/making a skimmer and fixing a few small air/coolant leaks (and a TON of cleaning) I decided to make a coolant filter mount as a test run. Everything is running well. Making good parts so far. A little limited on speed/working envelope but that's okay. This has been a longer term project than expected but I'm finally at a good starting point (6 months later).

Just wanted to share my little project thus far. Still a ways to go. Next step will be insulation as the southwest summers are brutal in a sheet metal building. Kinda put the cart before the horse getting the machine in the space first, but luckily I can move the machine with a pallet jack so I'm not complaining. For now the weather is nice and it's time to make some parts. Hopefully more to come soon.

Has any one tried making external splines(involute) in hardened material with miniature bull/ ball endmills?

Since the quantity is really low, I'm just thinking of milling out the splines using miniature endmills rather than getting a dedicated gear milling cutter. ( cost and long lead time due to it being non standard splines). Let me know your thoughts

QUESTION My machine pump keeps looking coolant pressure after 5 minutes

My machine is a fairly new haas vf2ss, and I've already tried the recommended troubleshooting, cleaned the inline filter, made sure the tank was full, diluted the coolant to make sure it was thin enough, cleaned the pump filter mesh, cleared debris from around the impeller, cleaned the bottom of the tank from debris

The coolant isn't being trapped in the machine by chips, or running low during the machine running

I am out of 'generic troubleshooting ' Options here

Turning the coolant off for a few seconds does seem to help for a minute or two
