General questions Rate my investment portfolio

27M here. Been following this investment plan for about a year now, investing 3K monthly, but my overall returns are only around 4-5% so far.

Currently, I put 1K into individual US and MY stocks, 1K into VTI, 200 into EPF, 500 into TNG+, and 300 into Versa PRS.

I know 1 year is still a short period, but I feel like my returns could be better. Would appreciate some advice on how I can improve my allocation. Thanks in advance.

Credit cards HSBC Malaysia dispute — restaurant double-charged me the following day, but the restaurant isn’t responding

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, hoping someone can share their experience or advise me on what to do.

I dined at a restaurant and noticed that I was charged twice for the same transaction, with the second charge appearing the following day.

I’ve tried contacting the restaurant to obtain a receipt and resolve the issue, but they haven’t responded. HSBC is asking me to provide the receipt to support my dispute, and I’m worried about what happens if the restaurant continues to ignore me.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation with HSBC Malaysia?

Will HSBC accept alternative evidence, such as screenshots of credit card statements and my attempts to contact the restaurant?

What happens if I genuinely cannot obtain the receipt because the restaurant isn’t responding?

Is there anything else I should do to ensure HSBC continues investigating my dispute?

I’d appreciate any advice, especially from anyone who has successfully disputed a duplicate restaurant charge without being able to obtain a receipt from the merchant.

General questions Thanks For The Suggestion For the Decade Money Simulator

I am the DECADES guy again guys.

So, after my last post I received a ton of feedback from you guys, more than I ever thought I would get actually. Some of you were really breaking the game 😂 I spent the past week fixing things you found:

- Stock market: some of you became market manipulators buying penny stocks and holding more than 50% of the company 😂 I built a new way for the prices to move and now there's a limit on how much you can buy.

- Jobs: no more 22 year-old with 6 months experience becoming CTO. Experience in the correct field now matters for senior jobs.

- "How do I get a wife?" Now you can look for love yourself. There's a dating app, or you can meet someone at work, through friends or back in kampung. You can propose, make the wedding plans or break up as well.

- Cards that don't fit your life: no car, no gf, and still get asked to pay for it. Fixed, cards now check your life first before they appear.

- Dying at 24 after 3 disasters in a row: bad luck now has a limit.

- Urut ad spa monthly to keep stress at 0: now only once a month 😂

Also included some new things: income tax, expanding your business to more outlets, and at the end you can view a timeline of your life.
I also upgrade the visual of the game so its not too boring now i think!!!

Many thanks to all who played, commented and reported bugs. You guys don't understand how much it helped me 🙏🙏

There is still room for improvement, so if something is wrong or not realistic, tell me!

Emergency fund ASB lumsump: end of this month or wait next year (2027) just accumulate

Hi guys I have rm5k in my hand and put into money+ (shopee)

Question is, should i deposit into ASB at the end of this month on the 31st?

Or should I accumulate the money and lumsump next year on 1st Jan? If i do this, I'll probably have rm7k

I want to maximize dividends. So if I lumsump huge next year it will count from jan?

I have few knowledge about asnb please help thanks

Last year, I managed to save rm4k in asb, this year however i saved a lot and now i have a staggering rm15k. But i dca every month. From my knowledge asnb is fixed price correct? It is not like etf where prices fluctuate up and down and you need to time it

So im confused . _ .

insurance Is my Insurance Enough?

26 Y/O - reviewing my insurance that I've inherited from my parents some time back. I'm not familiar with insurance but it looks to be an ILP and that doesn't seem to be good?

Here are the details (PruBSN Takaful Plan):

  • Monthly contribution: RM140 (approximately RM1680/year)
  • Total fund value: RM11.4k
  • Estimated surrender value: RM11,4k
  • Maturity/expiry date: 1 March 2080
  • Issued date: 1 March 2007

Current Coverage Breakdown:

  • Accidental Death & Disablement: MYR 25,000.00 (Expires: 01 Mar 2070)
  • Accidental Medical Reimbursement: MYR 2,000.00 (Expires: 01 Mar 2070)
  • Crisis Shield: MYR 25,000.00 (Expires: 01 Mar 2080)
  • Hospital Benefit (per day): MYR 200.00 (Expires: 01 Mar 2070)
  • Major Medical Cover: Daily room and board MYR 100.00 (Expires: 01 Mar 2070)

My work provides insurance for medical, dental, death as well.. wondering for personal insurance i currently have - do i need to change anything or add more rider policies to complement it? Or drop my existing ILP?

Appreciate any advice.

Stocks Genting is asking shareholders for RM1.25b. 86% of it goes to old debt and interest. What is your decision?

So I went through where Genting's RM1.25b rights money actually goes.

RM800m to pay back loans due within a year. RM280m for interest. The rest is working capital. Basically 86% goes back to the banks, zero for new business.

Then I saw the interest bill. RM2.1b a year. Walao. The whole RM1.25b covers barely 7 months of interest.

If you got 1,000 shares, they want about RM325 from you. Don't pay up, your stake shrinks from 100 to 80. And that RM1.30 price was set when the share was RM1.88. Now it's RM1.45, so if they reprice it could be closer to RM1, and you end up at 75.

I score Bursa stocks on my own sheet, Genting gets 24/100. Only thing going for it is it's dirt cheap vs book value.

So those holding, you all subscribing or just let it go? Or if I read something wrong, tell me lah.

Trading platform Joint investment account with spouse

Me and my spouse will be moving in together and pooling all our funds together to fund our future. Our joint income around 10k. We will be allocating 30% each month for investments. Is there any platform that is more suitable for joint account so that both of us can access the money incase either of us die. I plan to just dca in VWRA and leave it since our current exchange rate seems ok for usd/myr, i best option i have is IBKR which allows joint account but FSMone doesn't.

General questions With AI, everyone’s a “finance guru” now. How do you guys filter who to listen to?

When my first kid was born I panic-bought an ILP from a friend’s friend. Nice guy, very confident, showed me a nice projection table. It took me years to realise half of it was assumptions, and I only restructured it last year.

Now it feels 10x worse. My TikTok and YouTube are full of finance content, and lately a lot of it is obviously AI: same voice, same stock footage, “5 dividend stocks to retire early”, “how I turned RM500 into RM50k”. Some of it is so well made I can’t even tell if there’s a real person behind it. My mum (66) forwards me these on WhatsApp asking if she should put her savings in.

What I do now, roughly: check if the person or company is on the SC licensed list or is a BNM licensed financial adviser (most aren’t), check the SC Investor Alert List and BNM Financial Consumer Alert List, and if there’s a referral code or affiliate link in the bio I assume they’re selling something. If the returns sound too steady and too high, I skip.

But it’s not foolproof. Plenty of uncertified people give genuinely good basic advice on budgeting, EPF or emergency funds, and some licensed agents are just pushing product. I’ve even started asking ChatGPT to sanity-check things, which feels a bit ironic.

So genuinely asking:

  1. How do you decide who to trust nowadays? Licence, track record, or just vibes?
  2. Do you actually check licences before following someone’s advice?
  3. For those whose parents are on WhatsApp all day, how do you stop them from falling for this stuff?

Stocks Rakuten trade error

I am unable to buy or sell shares using rakuten for the past week. The sell order just shows as "new" in its status. I cannot amend the trade or cancel the trade. I am selling at bid price. Ie there are buyers at the price i want to sell at. But trades are not going through.

I asked rakuten customer service, i got email back saying they have problem with sending the order to bursa.

Any of you getting the same problem?

insurance Need advice on AIA insurance plan and proposed medical "top-up"

Hey there everyone, recently my agent mentioned AIA are doing a medical top-up campaign and that I am eligible for this top-up.

Here's the part where I'm confused and unsure

Basic Plan: A-LifeLink 2

Medical Rider: A-Plus Health360

Room & Board: Plan 300

Deductible Option(s): RM20,000/RM50,000/RM100,000 deductible per year

Basic Sum Assured: RM6,000

From reading the brochure....A-Lifelink 2 is an investment-linked plan (ILP). Currently, I am paying RM225/month for the A-Plus Med | Plan 200 which I feel is enough coverage. From reading some posts on here and Singapore PF subreddit, it is not advisable to proceed with this "top-up"?

I'm still waiting on my agent to call me and explain what's the actual benefits of this top-up as she mentioned "it is to supplement your existing coverage with no medical questions asked". Currently reading the brochure as I'm writing this post.

Stocks Game Plan for 2027

Post image
120 Upvotes

26M Malaysian, no wife, no gf, no mortgage, no kids. No loans. No debts, working in Canada after grad, really started investing in 2025. Started with penny stocks and realized gains were minuscule for the stress that came along with it. I guess it was also a blessing in disguise that I started investing/trading when I had little money - I made a lot of mistakes, closing early(i bought MU at 190 and sold at 230💀), wrong sizing, buying at the top(I bought Iren at 70💀)etc, but because my acc was actually small, it wasnt detrimental to me.

Also used to day trade/scalp short dated options, made a lot/lost a lot(basically breakeven on that portfolio) - Gave up with realising, I dont have an edge to scalp, and it was really just luck on my first few wins.

Went back to boring investing and swing trading long dated options(both buying and selling). Bought aggressively when Meta was at 580 and bought more after they finished their lawsuit. I did 2x leverage on this as my conviction was really high on META, in hindsight, i would have actually bought leaps instead but wtv. Muse came out and I closed my 2x position at 780 and bought back at 740 level. Just gonna hold this forever + Meta offering the new share thingy, I might buy more.

Rn I am very bullish on Amazon. If we get 300 by EOY, it will be a good Christmas present.

I most likely will be moving home next year. So I want to maximise my gainz without being overly risky. I guess the biggest thing right now is whether I should take a line of credit(around 25K CAD, 70K rm to buy more stocks - no option play for this one). Other than hyperscalers, what are you guys looking at.

Not interested in Memory, small cap, neocloud stocks.

Trading platform if you had to choose, would you rather put 100k in fsmone or ibkr.

Basically what the title says, if you had a large amount of money to put into an etf , which would you pick if you could only pick one? , would you rather put it all in fsmone or ibkr. on one hand fsmone is regulated and has been around quite a long time. But on the other hand ibkr is much bigger globally and has been around longer than fsmone, but it isnt regulated in malaysia, but is regulated in singapore. Currently use both, but wondering which i should priotize, cause i want to keep most of my etfs fund in one place. Only etf i have is vwra which is available on both

Edit: okay thanks everyone that replied :D

It's hard to buy ASM units these days, so would it be a good option?

Career Career Advice (long read)

Hi fellow Malaysians! I am currently stuck in a situation and can't really decide what's best for me. So I would like to ask if you were in my shoes what would you do?

I am currently working at a startup that I've been from the beginning around 2 years ago. I am holding a Team Lead position. We are a digital marketing agency and have been managing quite a lot of projects. There were some hardships along the way but we've managed to secure some projects that will last the company for at least 6-8 months. No increment or bonus for us founders as we are re-investing all the money back to the company such as operation cost and employee salary and benefits. We are not doing terrible but not exactly fantastic either. In the near future I can't see any significant improvement in terms of remuneration package because we are barely breaking even at the moment. Yes I am in the profit sharing scheme but I can tell its going to be difficult to have that in short period. The good thing is we are practicing fully remote work and working hours are flexible. As long as you get the job done, we don't care even if you are sleeping in mid-day.

This is the new offer that I got:

Take home net-pay has increased to RM10k. Close to 20% increment. It's a well established digital marketing agency with strong financial backing. I will be leading a team and managing the same kind of projects as I am doing now. The catch is I'll have to be on-site 5 days, where parking, food will cost more as compared to now where I just cook and eat at home. The good side is for established companies like this there will be bonus and allowances, and more job security I guess?

MY current commitment:

Car: RM1.4k
Rent + Utilities: RM1.5k
Other miscellaneous (PTPTN, Insurance, CC installment, petrol, parking): RM1.5k
New house interest: RM400

The rest is my savings + food & groceries. I'm saving about 1.5k-2k each month. With the new increment, I foresee to be able to save another 500-1000, deducting the expensive cost of working on site.

If you were in my shoes, which one would you choose?
