International roaming with Mint in Japan sucks
My wife and I recently returned from a one week trip to Tokyo and Osaka and we both had awful experiences with our Minternational Passes. We activated our passes prior to leaving the USA to avoid any issues with activation, however, upon landing my wife's phone (Pixel 3a XL) could not connect to any mobile networks. We tried all the suggested troubleshooting steps, turning airplane mode off/on, rebooting, etc. We finally got her phone working after a few hours by manually updating the APN settings, but it was not easy because the automated phone support gave us incorrect APN settings at first. I finally had to use WiFi to visit the web support page to find the correct APN settings.
My phone (Pixel 8a) did connect to a mobile network upon landing, but the network was completely unusable beyond sending/receiving SMS text messages. Websites would take minutes to load. I was mainly trying to use Google Maps to navigate us to our hotel, and that would take minutes for a route to load, and then it would often fail and give me an offline error. I tried running a speed test, but even that failed to load. Following the same troubleshooting steps, including manually updating the APN settings, didn't work for me. I was finally able to get usable data speeds my manually selecting a different roaming network, but that network wasn't always available so I found myself periodically having to test multiple roaming networks to find one that worked. All in all, it was a pain in the ass and I will never trust Minternational roaming again. Next time, I plan to purchase a local SIM card.
After our return, I tried requesting a refund and was told Mint doesn't offer refunds on Minternational Passes, even if you encounter major issues using them.
