PSA: Check your local library to see if you can read "Proficient Motorcycling" by David L. Hough for free!

I am a brand new rider and since I've started I've just been hooked on everything riding related, especially riding technique and theory! I've seen this book recommended many times in this sub, so I wanted to remind people that their local library exists, and you may be able to read "Proficient Motorcycling" for free.

Oftentimes people are unaware, but many libraries will give you free access to an expanded selection of ebooks through apps like Hoopla and Libby, all you need to do is sign up for a library card! At least in the US. Also, signing up for a library card is the best way to support your local libraries. Usually the number of card holders is a primary metric in determining the funding they receive for a year.

Anyways, hope this helps someone else become a better rider too!

Dropped my 12 vstrom 650 on its right side and it spilled oil but no leaks so far.

Video of the bike

The bike has crash bars and no visible engine damage, no oil leaking after a day only some from the incident still on the bike.

When i was cut off and it started falling, i bailed but forgot to turn it off so it fell and hit the rev limiter twice before i could turn it off, after picking it up, i found oil seeping, as if its coming from the gas tank.

Idk if the engine ran dry for those revs and is damaged i didnt turn it on and since my side sight glass isnt accurate as its dirty i cant even tell for sure how much ill have to add although motorcycle def doesnt have enough oil now (no oil appears even when i tilt it towards me) and i just did an oil change.

The amount of oil I'd say could be anywhere from 200-500ml, and its mostly near the top right side but it did go to both sides, can i add something like 400ml of oil to keep it near F and run it or should i do something else ?

Woke up this morning to find that my bike was hidden and vandalized by a total cornball

I went to leave my bf’s place and my heart completely sank when I saw my parking spot was empty. After walking around the complex for 5 minutes I found my bike behind a dumpster. Not sure what all they did to it. Looks like they tried to hot wire it since they completely destroyed my ignition

On the other hand, they left me these 2 insanely corny notes 😭 how bored can you be ??? It’s upsetting that this happened not even a year in to riding, but I'm just glad I'm insured and still have my baby!!

Anyone else change their own tires. What machine do you use?

I bought a no mar tire changer last summer when I needed to change my gokdwing tires. About to chabge the tires on my Rocket 3 soon. I find the mount and dismount bar to be a little to weak to use for goldwing tires so I bought a Mojo lever and that thing is a beast.

I also have a couple different gravity wheel ballancers that will hold the single side swing arm type rims. It is pretty satisfying once they are all mounted and ready to go. I get my valve stems from tire supply network online. They seem to be high quality.

Anybody else ride with a radar detector?

Got one for my car, liked it enough to buy another for my bike. They’ve improved a lot since I last had one. GPS to auto-mute, bluetooth (I wrote an app to speak the alerts through my Sena), etc.

Already alerted me of laser once on the freeway, which of course means I would have just gotten a ticket had I been speeding.. but CHP uses lots of Ka band up in the hills, and it works great for that.

New vs used adventure bike with a €10k budget. What would you do?

β€’ Upvotes

Hi guys, so I'm looking to buy a motorcycle, but I'm torn between buying new or used. My budget is around €10,000.

For new bikes, I'm considering models like the Voge 800 Rally, Voge 900 DSX, CFMOTO 1000MT-X, or something similar.

On the other hand, I could get a used bike for roughly the same money, such as a Yamaha Tracer 9, Honda Africa Twin, or something along those lines.

What would you guys do in my situation? Would you go for a brand-new bike with a warranty, or an older bike from a more established brand?

For reference, I'm almost 2 metres tall and weigh around 90 kg, in case that makes a difference haha.

I'd appreciate any advice, especially from people who have owned or ridden these bikes!

Hey guys I wanna ask if the Michelin Power 2CT tires are ideal and good for commuting and long roads for my KTM Duke 390 Gen 2. I asked 2 shops one suggested me these but another one suggested me Pirelli & Metzeler tires which were more expensive than the Michelin 2CT.

[NEED ADVICE] Honda ST1100 won't start after new battery! Bad starter?

Post image
β€’ Upvotes

Hi,

I have an old 2001 ST1100 that generally runs without issues that I haven't ridden in probably a month or so. It sometimes took longer turning over to start, especially when it was chilly out, so I figured it's likely an aging battery and that I'd replace it either late this year (nowish) or even better early next season.

Well today I turned they keys on, put it in neutral and it didn't do anything. No clicking, no whirring, just dimmer headlight when pushing the starter button. All the electrical bits seem to work, honker, turn signals, kill switch is off, definitely in neutral, even put up the kickstand, nothing worked. Bought and put in a new battery (old one in the picture), charged it up and same thing. All the lights turn on, but the starter doesn't turn.

I'm not much of a mechanic, but it makes sense that it's likely the starter, yes? I'm thinking that if the carbs are gunked up from sitting with fuel for several weeks, it would at least make an attempt to turn or am I wrong to assume this?

Any other advice is much appreciated.

Rate my first ever motorcycle. How is it?

Today I scored an awesome Facebook Marketplace find. My first ever motorcycle, the 1982 Yamaha XJ650 Maxim. Seller was super nice, has clean title, and I got any missing parts you might notice from the pictures with the deal. Brand new front and rear tire, never on the road. Front brake caliper and hose is currently removed, and rear drum brake has no power currently. Engine turns over great, but the carbs are currently off, so no start. Seller took them off to clean them but decided it was over his head and stopped. Handlebars have been swapped from original. Top of engine is a bit oily looking, and the seals on the front fork appear to be a bit leaky also. I've got some work to do, but hopefully it is up and running for the riding season! 31k miles, his father has owned it since early 2000's, garage kept for a few years after he died.

plugfones or cardo 45mm jbl speakers as a upgrade

β€’ Upvotes

So I have a cardo spirit with the stock 32mm speakers and its not cutting it anymore. I have a kyt revo and pista but getting a rf1400 soon or 1500 when they come out sometime. I use earbuds as well. Just looking for insight as to what others might have done as well. I would like to try plugfones as I see a lot of people use them but speakers seem like the better choice. Plugfones seem nice so I don't have to put my earbuds in my pocket anymore and lose them sometimes.
