Modesty Journey What's your modesty journey?

Not everyone starts out modest from the beginning. Some people start this journey somewhere in the middle. Some already wear modest clothes but are unable to find their perfect style because the internet doesn't understand their modesty needs when it comes to finding the right clothes.

And some people are thinking about starting their journey but hesitate because of identity issues or societal pressure.

Everyone has their own struggles and difficulties.

But one thing we've learned throughout this journey is that we can't define modesty with specific rules. Because everyone has their personal preferences when it comes to modesty.

So, tell us your unique story. Share the struggles and awkward questions you face.

Yes I am on a mission and my mission was tichels. Of course on Depop.

Look at this! It's 2.00 USD. With shipping it would be about 5 bucks! I have one very similar, otherwise I would have bought it myself.

Question Why is there so much discrimination in fashion?

It's a common understanding that we're all different. We have different features, personalities, and styles. A color that might look beautiful on one person might not look the same on another.

But why do we judge people based on their skin color, height, appearance, or the way they style their outfits?

A girl wearing that color and styling that outfit might find it the perfect combination. She might feel beautiful and confident in it. So why are we judging her?

From my perspective, I think we're living in an era of filters. On social media, we want everything to look perfect. We see how models style themselves, and we start setting beauty standards based on what we see.

But why do we forget that we're human and we can't be perfect? Our imperfections and incompleteness have their own beauty.

So why do we judge people instead of appreciating them? She took a step to style herself. She made an effort to look beautiful for herself. Isn't that something worth appreciating rather than criticizing?

Sometimes, people pass harsh comments without realizing that what might seem like nothing to them could mean a lot to the person receiving them.

Maybe we don't all have the same taste in fashion, and that's completely fine. But we can still choose to be kind, respect each other's differences, and let people express themselves without making them feel less beautiful.

Has someone ever made you feel judged for the way you dress?

What’s your funniest modesty fail?

Ok so sometimes I think we get too serious as modest dressers, so I’m going to share something funny that happened to me earlier this year.

I had gotten a new job and needed to wear a blazer and trousers. The only trousers I could find that met my modesty criteria were for men, and they were too long.

I bought them, but didn’t have time to get them tailored. When going down the metro stairs on my first day of work, I tripped on my pants and fell down the stairs. 😆

Humiliating, but hey, we have to be able to laugh at ourselves.

Share your stories pls to save me from embarrassment.

Everyone’s been sharing their modest finds lately, and it inspired me to share mine too!

Except… I couldn’t stop at one, so bear with me :)

First, this black starlight dress with a blazer. The star-like detailing? I’m obsessed. And if you know me, I’m a sucker for black outfits.

Then there’s this black faux fur-trimmed oversized jacket. Also a big yes from me!

If you wanna check them out, I’ve linked both below.

This are gorgeous scarves at a fantastic price. I don't know the seller, never bought from them before but does have several modest garments listed as well, including some really nice hoodies with Arabic writing on them. I don't know Arabic, cannot say if they are inappropriate. Anyway. Depop. The scarves and the sellers name on the pic.

Discussion Plain hijabs or printed ones? Which team are you on?

I’ll always be a solid-colour hijab girlie.

Plain hijabs bring out my personality more, and I just feel comfortable wearing them. Printed and patterned hijabs look so pretty on other girls, but on me? I feel like I suddenly look like an aunty, lol. Maybe they actually suit me, but that's just how I see myself in them.

I'm also a georgette and modal girlie, not so much jersey. I've seen girls style jersey hijabs so beautifully, especially the way they drape them around their faces. But with my round face, I feel like jersey makes my face look bigger and the whole look a little too bulky.

How do you style your hijab, and which fabric is your go-to?
Bonus point: you can also share reference picture :)

I love shades of orange. The accent wall in my living room is a coral rusty orange with matching curtains. So when I found this I fell in love.

Discussion Is hijab only a Muslim thing?

I was scrolling IG and came across a reel where an influencer mentioned that people often associate hijab with Muslims.

He was standing outside a church where a sign clearly mentioned that women should cover their heads before entering. It shows that head covering isn't just a Muslim thing. It's a religious thing.

So, what are your thoughts on this?

If you could change one thing about shopping for modest clothes online, ww it be? 👀

My take: variety! I want mainstream brands like ASOS next to Egyptian brands next to Pakistani streetwear. Modest women are global, and we dress for so many different contexts!

What would you change??

Question What's your go-to sports-friendly outfit?

As a hijabi, I usually go for joggers, an oversized sweatshirt, and a sports hijab. The loose fit gives me the coverage I want without showing my body shape or skin, and joggers are just comfy to move around in.

What do you guys usually wear for sports or working out?

I thought this one was cool because I really like an oversized hood, especially as a hijabi. This might be TMI but sometimes if there are surprise guests in the house or something and I need to cover quick, these are perfect! 👌

Ok so if you know me, you know I love Issey Miyake. It’s a Japanese brand, so cool, but it’s very expensive. I found this skirt on MDST and it reminds me of Issey Miyake. I feel like it’s a good professional option!

How to make something more modest, without killing the wallet

Thumbnail

Most of my clothing items are thrifted. I love finding new and exciting items that aren't something most people have. The problem I have is many of my clothes, you can see my collarbones. I need them covered. Rather than get rid of the clothes, I transform them without needle and thread. My sewing skills are almost nonexistent. I go for dickies! These two different ones are under 20 USD each. The one without sleeves is about 6 dollars and the long-sleeved is about 18, both on Amazon.

Also great if you have blazing summers and freezing winters.

What do people think about men commenting in this community?

I’m just wondering. On the one hand, I think modesty isn’t gender-specific. But on the other hand, many men take a harder stance on women’s modesty than they do their own, and it shows in their comments.

Can men be part of a community like this without bringing judgment or making the community feel less welcome?

Discuss.

Question One myth you had when you started dressing modestly.

Thumbnail

When I started my modesty journey, one thing I had in mind was that modesty meant I had to wear abayas and long maxi dresses.

And you know what? Whenever I wear something very long with a big flair, I don't know why, but I feel dizzy, lol.

But throughout my journey, I figured out that modesty means creating your own personal style and building it with your creativity. It doesn't mean you have to wear long dresses.

These three are my favorite styles from my Pinterest board for everyday work, casual wear, or going somewhere with friends. I love traditional styles, so I experiment with them too.

So, what's your favorite piece of clothing or style? I would love to see yours!

If you need help thrifting online

Seriously, if you need help with thrifting on Depop, give me a shout. I am finding so much with modest clothing on there it makes me giggle with happiness. Abayas galore, vela (scarves for hijabs, do I have that correct?), tichels, modest clothing in general. I'm going to have to hide my credit card from myself at this rate. I find tznuis clothing. If you are looking for bags, shoes, whatever. Just give me a size and a color and I'll go on the hunt.

I just found a light cardigan, open weave but will look adorable over a more modest look. It was 5 USD. Yes, I bought it.

Oh yeah, and moose. Lots and lots of moose. 😇
