⚠️⚠️ MEGATHREAD ⚠️⚠️ New Westminster and BC Elections 2026: Candidates, Voting, and Astroturfing

New Westminster has not one but two elections coming up next month. Here's what you need to know about both.

Provincial snap election: October 24, 2026

Premier David Eby has called a snap provincial election for October 24, one week after municipal voting day. New Westminster falls within the Burnaby-New Westminster, New West-Coquitlam, and Richmond-Queensborough provincial ridings.

Provincial Election Candidates:

Burnaby-New Westminster

New Westminster-Coquitlam

Richmond-Queensborough

To vote provincially, eligibility and registration requirements are the same as the municipal election. Check your registration and find your voting location at elections.bc.ca.

Who can vote in the Provincial Election

You can vote in B.C.’s upcoming provincial election if you are:

  • a Canadian citizen,
  • 18 or older on October 24, 2026, and
  • a resident of B.C. since April 23, 2026.

Where to Vote in the Provincial Election

Advance voting is open in locations across the province on between October 16-21 | 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (local time). You don’t need a special reason to vote at advance voting. It’s an option for all eligible voters. Voters can vote at any advance voting place in the province, and all advance voting places are wheelchair accessible.

Make sure to check your Where to Vote card or visit wheretovote.elections.bc.ca to find voting places and the dates they are open.

Final Voting is open on Saturday, October 24 | 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Pacific time).

Your "Where to Vote" card

Elections BC will send a Where to Vote card to registered voters. Your Where to Vote card lists your assigned voting place on Final Voting Day and advance voting options in your electoral district. You can use your Where to Vote card as one of two pieces of voter ID, but you don’t need it to vote.

AMAs

Municipal, provincial, and school board candidates are welcome to reach out via modmail to arrange a verified AMA on the sub. We welcome candidates of all political affiliations as long as our rules are respected.

Political Discussions

Verified AMAs and news articles about significant election news are welcome here on r/newwest. For the bulk of political Q&A and discussion, please head to our sister sub, r/NewWestPolitics.

Astroturfing and political spam

I've so far identified 18 accounts in the leadup to this election season that appear to be spamming this subreddit and our sister subreddit with commentary that violates our rules. Most fit the same pattern: accounts created around or during prior election periods that appear out of nowhere to post one-sided political content, then go quiet again once voting wraps up. They typically have little to no karma and no history outside of election season or political discussions. New and resurrected accounts are welcome here for the majority of topics, but if your account exists solely to push a political agenda, you may find your participation limited by our basic account and activity requirements. This is universal across political affiliations; please don't spam our sub.

Municipal election: October 17, 2026

Two main elector organizations are fielding candidates this cycle, along with one independent:

Who can vote?

You must meet all the qualifications to vote:

  • Be 18 years of age or older on October 17, 2026
  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Have lived in BC for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration
  • Live in New Westminster (no minimum days required), or own property registered in your name in New Westminster for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration
  • Not be disqualified by law from voting

How to vote

General Voting Day
October 17, 2026: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Advance Voting Days
October 7, 8, 9, 10, & 14, 2026: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

New Westminster uses a "vote anywhere" model, meaning you can vote at any of the 15 voting locations on general voting day. Nine advance voting opportunities are available over five days, including October 9, when five locations across the city will be open simultaneously. All eligible voters may apply to vote by mail. Click here for more details.

Eligible voters in New Westminster can vote for one mayor, six councillors and seven school trustees.

To register or check your registration: elections.bc.ca or call 1-800-661-8683. You can also register in person on voting day with two pieces of ID.

Question Azure 2 hot water issues

Anyone living in the Azure 2 building ever experience issues not being able to get much hot water when using the shower/sinks? My wife and I moved in this month and have been experiencing this issue on occasion.

Discussion 618 Carnarvon - are you okay?

If you live in this building, I am a little bit worried for one of you.

No obvious signs of human life for a few days, but I see three creepy children lined up and staring out the window across Sixth Street.

Sure caught my eye during my work meeting the other day! 🎃👻 nicely played!

Discussion No more train whistle at Braid!!

I was at the intersection yesterday and did not hear the train horn when it passed.
I think the city has finally reached this milestone and fully implemented the cessation.
As one of the people who kept pressure on the City I think this is something to celebrate as a Sapperton community.

Question Anyone currently living at apartment above newwest station Azure 1 or 2 (888/898 Carnarvon)? How is it nowadays?

Hi! I’m considering moving to the towers above New Westminster Station/Plaza 88), and I’d love to hear from anyone who currently lives there or has lived there recently. Experiences from Azure 1/2 at 888/898 Carnarvon or other nearby apartments would also be helpful!

I’ve searched through Reddit and Google and found some pretty mixed/bad reviews, but a lot of them seem to be a few years old, so I’m wondering what the buildings are actually like nowadays.
I viewed a unit at Azure 1 recently and honestly really liked it. It looked great, was quite spacious, and seems like a pretty good deal at around $2,000/month for a 1 bed/1 bath (~615 sq ft), especially considering the direct SkyTrain access.

For current/recent residents, how has your experience been? I’m especially curious about:
1.Elevator reliability/wait times
2.SkyTrain or street noise
3.How hot the units get in summer
4.Building management/maintenance
5.Security and package theft
4.Bike storage (we weren’t sure where it was and how to access it)
5.Any pest, plumbing, water leak or other recurring building issues
6.Amenities and general cleanliness
7.What it’s actually like living directly above the station
8.Anything you wish you knew before moving in
9.Overall, would you recommend living at Azure 1 or 2 today?
Thanks! :)

Lost/Missing Amelia’s cafe-today October/25(sunday)

I was there today(Sunday) and didn’t realize my daughter left her Owala water bottle there. And by the time I noticed it’s not with her we were already too far away. And couldn’t go back to get it since they close at 3pm.
Is there any chance they will still keep it there for me if I go tomorrow to get it back?

Question Pilates in New West: $42 for one class?

Has anyone signed up at the new club Pilates on 6th? I'm trying to figure out what their memberships or class packs cost and it's been weirdly hard to find out.

There's no pricing on their website, so I made an account to check. The only price I could see was a single class at $42, and to see anything else it wants me to add a credit card first. I'm not comfortable putting my card in before I even know what the options are. It just seems odd to make pricing this hard to see.

I'm also new to Pilates, so I was honestly shocked by $42 for one class. Is that normal for reformer Pilates around here? If anyone has a membership there (or somewhere similar nearby), I'd really appreciate knowing what you pay.

The studio looks really nice and I'd like to try it, I just want to know what I'm signing up for first.

Question Mechanic rec?

I’ve been going to Hyack Tire, but since they were bought out, it just doesn’t feel the same.

My car needed a new ignition coil, and they wanted to replace all the coils + the spark plugs, and they quoted me $2000. My FIL was able to get the faulty ignition coil and all spark plugs replaced for $240. Granted, he had a connection and got a friend discount, but still. I think $500-$1000 would have been reasonable.

My understanding is that they place an emphasis on really good quality parts and providing a long-term warranty on their work. That’s probably perfect for some ppl’s needs and I don’t want to bash them or anything.

But my car is a second-hand 2004 sedan. It’s not a fancy car, and it doesn’t need fancy parts. I need a mechanic with more of a “fix it if it’s broken or about to break and don’t worry about top-of-the-line parts” philosophy.

Does anyone know of an excellent mechanic in New West that fits the bill?
