Announcement Posts concerning the conflict in Israel and Palestine / Publications au sujet du conflit en Israël et la Palestine

Hello everyone,

Due to current events, we have seen many posts about the Israel/Palestine conflict, typically about protests supporting one side of the conflict or the other, or articles about some statement made by a public figure.

In ALL those posts, the comments have devolved into insults, accusations of supporting terrorism/genocide and counter-accusations of [insert violent action here]. While each post starts with something related to our sub’s subject matter, they always end up being screaming matches about something that is not even related to Ontario.

It’s important to understand that the mods in the sub cannot, and will not, police who is ‘right’ in this debate. Additionally, when a large portion of the comments violate our rules (typically Rule 3: you must remain civil), we MUST intervene. However, since they ALL devolve into screaming matches, there’s no point in even trying to maintain a discussion that doesn’t even concern the sub’s raison d’être.

As such, going forward, and for the foreseeable future, ANY post related to the conflict in Israel/Palestine will be locked even if Ontario related. If it IS related to Ontario, it will remain visible but commenting will not be permitted.

The mods would prefer not to do this, but the last few days have clearly shown that there is not realistic way to permit commenting on these posts while maintaining some form of decorum.

2026-09-22: reposted due to several recent events having posts locked.

Discussion I'm from Quebec and I heard about 407 ETR

I'm from Quebec not knowing the area in Mississauga for the weekend and twice my damn google map gave me the 407 ETR toll route by default. I TRIED to dodge the route by canceling but all 3 suggested routes were going through the toll. I expected to pay about 8$ max per trip and I'll pay over 20$ for each trip instead. Wtf

I heard of Harris selling a 99 year lease the highway for 3 billion. Wtf is this? He must 100% be corrupted to make this kind of deal. 99 years??? With inflation 3 bn will become worth 300M in 99 years. I'm so pissed and I'm also sorry Ontario. This should've been illegal.

Question What’s it like living in Georgina, ON?

• Upvotes

I’ve been looking at Georgina lately, more so I am outdoorsy so a friend recommended checking out an area called Willow Beach or Jackson’s Point? I’m interested to hear from people who actually live in that area.

Which neighbourhoods would you recommend and are there any you’d personally avoid?

A few things I am interested in:
• Overall safety and if you feel comfortable walking around at night
• Quiet, friendly neighbourhoods with a sense of community
• Any issues with crime, break-ins, noise, recurring problems?

Would really appreciate honest opinions, especially from people who are living there or have lived there recently.

Thanks in advance!

Politics Polling/Strategic Voting For Municipalities Outside Toronto?

Im looking to vote today in the Vaughan municipal election, and for some of the positions (like school board trustee), I have multiple candidates I'd be okay with winning and 1 I really don't want to win.

I'll admit I haven't been too involved with my local city's politica so far, so that's somewhat on me for not having a pulse on who is how popular.

But my concern is, is there any way to find out which candidates are more/less popular? I'm worried about splitting my vote and possibly ending up with my only hated option.

I tried looking up polls but had no luck, and what discussions I could find online for my city were all limited to the mayoral race and maybe an occasional councillor.

Question How much are GLP1s?

• Upvotes

My insurance does not cover GLP1s for weight loss purposes. If I decide to pursue GLP1s and pay out of pocket, approximately how much can I expect to spend per month? Please share your monthly cost(s) and dosage amounts (and dispensing pharmacy if you think it's relevant).

I am not interested in those fake online services/prescriptions. If I do this, I'll do it via my family doctor.

Edit to add: If you could also share your brand, that would be useful.

Question Amending a birth certificate

Wondering if anyone has any recent experience with this?

In a sleep deprived state, a parental middle name was left out on the birth certificate. I know. Trust me, I know.

We realized when we started filling out the info on our child’s passport.

In order to amend, service Ontario has said:

  1. Request an amendment package (takes 6-10 weeks to receive)

  2. Apply for the amendment, takes 18.5 weeks to be processed.

  3. You can’t do it in person.

Obviously we are completely in the wrong, just wondering if it actually took 28 weeks to rectify for anyone? So much for traveling this winter LOL. Crying.

Thank you!

Discussion North Dundas/Winchester/Cornwall Parents, listen up.

• Upvotes

What are parents in Cornwall being told about Empathy Express?

Parents deserve to know who they're trusting with their children.

Brandon Mayer, who now runs Empathy Express in Cornwall, pleaded guilty to assaulting an 11-year-old boy while working as a daycare supervisor. He received a suspended sentence and three years of probation.

But there's more to this situation.

A parent whose son was also a victim has described allegations of disturbing emotional manipulation, including being required to message Mayer every night, being punished for late replies, being told his family didn't love him and that Mayer was the only person who cared about him, and being asked inappropriate questions about what he did in the shower.

Let that sink in. These are allegations from a parent whose child was affected, and they deserve to be taken seriously.

I'm also hearing that parents at the daycare were not notified.

Were parents told what had happened? If not, why not?

When someone is entrusted with the care of children, parents have every reason to expect transparency about serious concerns affecting their children's safety.

Children deserve to feel safe with the adults caring for them. They should never be manipulated, intimidated, or made to feel dependent on an adult who is supposed to protect them.

Parents deserve answers. Families deserve to be heard. And the safety of children should always come first.

Discussion French Immersion for a Child's 3rd language

Planning to move back to Ontario with my Japanese partner. We both speak Japanese and English, but once our first kid was born, we switched to English at home as her pre-school/kindergarten is in Japanese.

The kid is pretty bilingual right now English/Japanese.

Would be great to get her started on French though via French immersion. So I guess we would then change to Japanese at home, her 'life' would be in English (Friends, grandparents, etc.) with school in French....

Does anyone else have this experience and can comment?

Thanks

Discussion Have your Vitamin D checked

I’ve been suffering from depression-like symptoms, fatigue, muscle pain and brain fog. If you’re feeling the same and can afford about $50 out of pocket expense, have your vitamin D checked.

I have a family doctor and I’ve been seeing him for the last three years. When I’m discussing my symptoms (emphasis on the plural form), he kept saying one symptom per visit only. Never has he ordered a vitamin D test but he kept recommending taking antidepressants, which I refuse to believe. I asked to see a psychiatrist to discuss my symptoms further but was never scheduled for.

Only after ordering some test from lifelabs was I able to connect with another doctor online, I discussed all of the symptoms that I am having and never had I feel rushed. She suggested doing some blood work, where most came normal except for the severe deficiency in Vitamin D. I even got an appointment with a psychiatrist in less than a month.

I feel like my family doctor owes me the years of suffering I had which could have been simply solved.

Question Car scrapped 2 years ago, still shows me as current registrant

Hey everyone, looking for some advice to see if anyone else has dealt with something similar.

Two years ago, I was in a hit and run accident. The tow yard that towed my car from the scene of the accident held onto my car until I found out my third party insurance wouldn't cover me for any damages or tow yard fees. Because the car was totalled, I paid the tow yard in cash for their charges, and they gave me a small discount in exchange for letting them scrap it. I did not get a formal receipt/bill of sale from them.

I went into ServiceOntario the same day, turned in the plates, and told them it was being scrapped. The employee handed me a general-purpose receipt and handwrote "vehicle sold, plates returned" right on the paper and signed it.

Fast forward to last week. Just out of extra caution, I decided to pull a UVIP/vehicle record search for the car. I did this after reading a story on CTV news of someone who was on the hook for tow yard fees on a car they sold 15 years ago.

To my surprise, the system still lists my name under "Current Registrant." I went right back to ServiceOntario to check. They told me there wasn't an option in their system to mark the car as 'scrapped', but it was already marked 'sold'. They said however the car will remain in my name until the (unlikely) event of someone transferring it to themselves happens and that they couldn't do anything to remove my name as the current registrant. They printed out a history sheet showing that the vehicle status is marked as "Sold" in their computer.

From what I gather, because it was supposedly scrapped and there's no new buyer to register the car and overwrite my name, my name just sits there forever as the last active owner on a frozen "Sold" file.

A few questions:

  1. Am I 100% legally shielded here? If a car is marked "Sold" and the plates are officially cancelled, can any future tolls, scrap/tow-yard or other liabilities come back to haunt me in the event the car wasn't scrapped and is being driven by someone?

  2. Is there any workaround to get ServiceOntario to remove my name as the current registrant or mark it "scrapped" instead of "sold"? Or am I totally overthinking this?

  3. Is it worth reaching out to my local MPP's office just to get it fully scrubbed/add to the document trail in the unforeseen event I am on the hook for any future liabilities on the car?

I have the signed receipt and the history printout showing it's "Sold", but seeing my name on the current registrant on the UVIP still makes me a bit paranoid.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Exploring Ontario A Canadian professional premiere of Alias Grace is coming to Schomberg!

Hi r/Ontario!

I’m directing King Theatre Company’s production of a stage adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace, opening November 6.

Here’s a short trailer featuring footage from rehearsals as we bring this haunting story of Canadian history, memory, and mystery to the stage.

Watch the trailer HERE

The historical events that inspired Atwood’s novel took place in the King Township area, making this a particularly meaningful story to stage locally.

Schomberg Community Hall

November 6–15

If you’re interested in Canadian theatre, Atwood, or historical mysteries, we’d love to see you there!
