Rule #1 of Opentoonz: NEVER USE SAVE SCENE (It doesn't save your frames!)
Q. How to turn on onion skin?
A. Hover your cursor on the bar where the circle above your frame marker is. You should see a small circle. Click and you will set an onion skin. Ones on the edge are static and don't move. Ones on the same level as the circle move with it.
Q Is Opentoonz a Virus?
A. No
A1. (Long answer)
No, as long as you download from the official website! (Link below)
If you have an Intel Graphics display driver, you may need to find and download the latest version. Don't rely on Driver Update as it may not detect it. Need to go onto intel's driver download site and check the version of the driver you have against yours. Manually download and install the driver upgrade it if you are not at the latest.
If you have driver version 26.20.100.7463 or a version of this graphic driver, try downloading and installing version 26.20.100.7584. Here is the direct download link:
If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, this may work better for you: Enter the NVIDIA Control Panel and create a 3D Profile for OpenToonz.exe and if given the option, set to use High Performance GPU. You are essentially forcing OT to use your GPU which should fix the issue.
Alternatively, if using Windows 10, it might help to search for Graphics Settings in Windows Settings. Add OpenToonz.exe and configure for High Performance.
Q. How do I render?
A. 'Render>Output Settings'
A. Install FFmpeg for additional formats such as GIF and Mp4
Q. My frames are missing and turning red
A. Make sure you use 'Save All' and not 'Save Scene' there's an autosave option on the startup Popup and in preferences
Q. How do I duplicate a frame that I can edit without affecting the first one?
A. D to duplicate drawing or right click and press duplicate
Q. Some tools aren't working for me
A. Make sure you're using them on the right level
Q. What is a level?
A. Levels hold the drawings themselves. They do NOT store the timing. Timing is stored on the x-sheet.
A. There are three types;
Vector
infinitely scaleable
can edit lines after being drawn, but sometimes doesn't look exactly how you drew it
color palette updates automatically
filling can sometimes be glitchy
can be laggy when turning on onion skin
Toonz Raster
accurate to your pen strokes
has a plethora of brushes to choose from
color palette updates automatically
is made up of pixels
cannot blend colors
Raster
Accurate to your pen strokes
color palette does not update automatically
gets blurry when zoomed in
colors can be blended
typically used for sketching and backgrounds
A1. TLDR; levels are the frames you show via Timeline.
Q. How do I add a color?
A. In the color palette panel, press the new style button OR the plus button
Q. My transparent gif render has a weird ghosting effect?
A. Under Xsheet>Scene Settings, make sure this is enabled
Q. FFMPEG isn't working for me on Linux?
A. Make sure you aren't using the snap version of Opentoonz because it can't read the file, either use flatpak or build from source
Q. How do I unselect everything but the current column I'm using in the function Editor?
A. While there is no 'official' way to do it, you can hide all the columns by hiding the 'Stage' and unhiding the column you're working on
Q. What is the difference between import and load?
A. Import copies your file to the project's extras folder. Load just loads from the original location. When deleted, import will keep the file in the project assuming it isn't deleted from your extras folder, and load will no longer be able to use the file once deleted.
Q. How do I move frames and keys together?
A. Hold ctrl and select the frames on the xsheet. This will automatically select the keys. Then use the handlebar to move the frames
Since the colors and shadows are always too bright, I would like the result to look more like anime, like the image. As you can see, there is soft lighting that mutes the colors, making them less visible, like in ordinary images.
I dont want to spend money on software. Iheard that OpenToonz is very good for vector layers, and I don't like raster at all. If you use OpenToonz, even better. If you don't use OpenToonz, find a free alternative that you use and the exact steps to achieve the final result, like Roronoa Zoro in the picture.
my computer's display decided to fuck itself and i want to export my opentoonz files just in case it gets worse or something. im technilogically illiterate, how do i do that. i'm talking eli5-level stuff. I'm on a mac.
i'm trying to export a specific animation, does the TNZ file contain everything that i need? or do i need to export more? what do i do
i want to animate like adobe animate, i saw some images of this app and it looked very similar and certain, but when i open the app for first time, this apears. im not familarisated with this type of interface, can someone explain what to do so it looks like this?
Yeah, I’m having trouble inserting an image it’s not supposed to look like a rainbow static. Is there a way a format about hows it done because mine is a PNG
I'm trying to render this scene as a gif but every time I do the final product is an unopenable maybe corrupted file. The problem isn't there with other gif renders, and I also noticed that the file becomes bad at some specific frame but haven't found out which.
I'm new to OpenToonz. I use a Huion Kamvas for drawing, and I want to animate with it on Open Toonz. But the UI scaling is pretty terrible. By default, my Kamvas is in 150% resolution, and the UI is so big I barely have any drawing space. I've been looking for ways to solve this.
If I change my Windows settings, the UI becomes really small, and worse than all, my drawing gets offset (I draw in one place and the drawing is made in another).
If I change the settings via the enviornment variables (setting QT_SCALE_FACTOR), I can adjust the UI properly, but I still get offset drawings. This time in another place, for some reason.
And I can't manage to change the icon sizes with a default stylesheet, and no one seems to know how to.
This kind of issue seems quite inacceptable to me. The app is barely usable for my situation.
Its only in open toonz, i draw in photoshop and it never occurs there. Sometimes when using stylus, the app thinks that im still pressing down even though i already lifted my pen. Surprisingly its not only when i draw but interact with ui using stylus too. These squiggly trails are drawn when i hover over a tablet without touching it. Anybody knows a fix?
I am a traditional animator, specialising in cartoons and seinen styled animation and i would like to know if i could use this to accurately replicate old cell animation
i want to adjust the timing of my drawings, but everytime i adjust the exposure length, it moves every other cell ahead of it. how do i do it 😭?
i tried holding down ctrl while dragging them, and using del instead of backspace, and using ctrl+x, and all of them move the other cells. which is so funny because i used to have the opposite problem with opentoonz before, i think.
is this a 1.8 thing? am i missing something, or did it change??
so im verrry new to open toonz and animation in general, i just installed ffmpeg so i could render to mp4/ gif but when i render it it breaks, the mp4 cuts to black at the end and the gif is just black entirely any help, info or tips are welcome i cant send the mp4 because it is less than 2 seconds. (also i know i messed up the arc of motion pls dont boil me)
I'm going insane with this. I did some test with puppet animation yesterday, everything was normal. Now when I make a change in one keyframe, all the others will become the same.
I am rigging all the body parts of this guy and I can't figure out how to connect them. Example:
When i bend the knee of the trousers, the foot doesn't move with it (it remains in its position although the leg is its parent), I have to manually move the foot to the trousers position.
Is there a way to "string" them all together like an actual puppet? I know I'm missing something..
How do I scale all the layers of this rig at the same time? There is no way I am individually scaling each part of the character and haven't had any luck finding an answer online. If anyone knows pleeeaase let me know
I tried to follow a tutorial for connecting multiple opentoonz plastic tool meshes together, but I can't figure out how to select specific vertices in the stage schematic tool. The instruction I followed was this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cXMOXnDTIM . Is it just me and my 1.8 linux having this issue? I connect mesh level A with Mesh Level B, I can see the buttons to change the connection but when I try to click it nothing happens, A stays A, B stays B.
I'm using OpenToonz 1.8 and an XP-Pen Artist 16 3rd Gen pen display.
Drawing works perfectly fine in other apps, such as Krita and Adobe Animate, but in OpenToonz, my strokes keep breaking up and getting interrupted, just like in the video I attached. The same issue occurs when using the eraser, too.
I've tried everything I could find, including syncing Windows Ink with OpenToonz and reinstalling the tablet driver, but nothing has made any difference.
Has anyone else experienced the same issue? If so, were you able to find a solution?
Update: I also have a regular pen tablet, and when I tried drawing with it, everything worked fine without any issues.
Could there be a defect with my Artist 16 3rd Gen?
My setup consists of two monitors and one pen display, all connected to an RTX 3060 Ti graphics card.
(Origonally posted in the Tahoma2D subreddit, as thats the program i am using, but im assiming the tools are similar.)
Basically im trying to draw a symetrical object, and i've been trying to use the control point editor to adjust my lines. It however only adjusts one side even with the symetry tool on.
basically all in the title. when animating to music it helps me to see the shape of the audio track to set keyframes at the right moments. I'm not totally new to OT, but haven't found if this an option yet. Thank you!
I'm a new user to OpenToonz software and an animation student. I'm struggling with figuring how Xsheet works out as I can't see anything if I make multiple Xsheet layers. If I have more than one Xsheet layer, then only the top layer of the Xsheet layers I have will appear. I know how to open into Xsheet and leaving the layers. Is there any setting that will show all of the Xsheet layers when viewing the 'final animation'.
