History Pearl Jam Book - we need your stories!

Good morning all - I am one of the authors of 'I Am No Guide: Pearl Jam Song by Song', and I am working with the folks at The State of Love and Trust Podcast on another book. It's called
"The Love That Is Saved: Pearl Jam Across a Generation." It is the story of how Pearl Jam's music has evolved and how what it means to be a Pearl Jam fan evolved alongside it.

We want to explore how Pearl Jam's music impacted you when you first heard it. How your relationship to it has changed over time. What it means to grow up and grow older in parallel with one bands music. We want to tell the story of what it meant to first listen to Ten alone in your room, the rush of the first time you heard them live, what it was like to walk down the aisle to Future Days, to sing Pearl Jam songs to your children, and to take them to their first show. And every experience in between.

We cannot tell that story without you. And we want to tell it, as much as possible, in the voice of that fandom. Your stories in your voice. Over the next several months we will be releasing a series of surveys asking you to share your Pearl Jam history. The first (linked below) is about your general fandom, but we'll be diving deeper into each album, asking what they meant to you then, and what they mean to you now. And while these are anonymous, you have the option of sharing your name so we can quote you directly. New links will follow roughly every two weeks, but each will remain open right up until the point the book is finished.

The band's music has helped shape who we are, and the power of Pearl Jam's music draws strength from the community that surrounds it. The best way to tell the story of that music's impact is by telling the collective story of all those individual stories. Thank you for your help with this, and for giving us the opportunity to make your voice a part of it

Lyrics What do the lines "All my pieces set me free" and "Human devices set me free" in W.M.A mean?

I love listening to W.M.A. and all the history that goes with it. But every time I get to the end of the song, I can't help but wonder what those two lines at the end mean. English isn't my first language and I'm not American so I'm probably missing out on some context here.

Both the lines feel to me like Eddie is implying that being a cop must feel liberating with the power one wields through the weapons they possess. I know this theory is a stretch. The "weapons" idea is probably just glorified G leaking into my thoughts.

Please rewire my perception of this song :)

Discussion No Code tracklist

I put on No Code for a coworker recently. I would describe this person as having very broad horizons musically, yet they struggled to enjoy the album due to its abrupt mood swings. By the time we went from Mankind into Present Tense I was asked if there were more sudden changes yet to come because they wanted to tap out if so.

It got me thinking. No Code is a bipolar album. It does have abrupt mood swings. I feel like that was intentional? Was it a part of the bands idea to separate further from the mainstream by releasing an album that some would find uncomfortable?

I can definitely appreciate why my coworker would feel that way, even though I am a fan of the album. So I tried an experiment: would the album flow better or worse if the tracklist was rearranged? Here's what I came up with:

  1. Sometimes
  2. Who You Are
  3. In My Tree
  4. Lukin
  5. Smile
  6. Hail, Hail
  7. Off He Goes
  8. Red Mosquito
  9. Mankind
  10. Habit
  11. Present Tense
  12. I'm Open
  13. Around the Bend

I really wanted to preserve the opening quiet mood. But instead of abruptly going from the soft Sometimes into the loud Hail, Hail, I thought why not really commit to a softer opening trio with each track a little louder than the last?

Then into Lukin and then Smile. They're in the same key of E minor. Fast and screaming followed by slower and chuggy. Then Hail, Hail. So far that's 3 soft songs and 3 heavy songs.

The peaceful Off He Goes remains as the centrepiece of the album.

Afterwards, Red Mosquito is rocky, but it's not as abrupt a start after Off He Goes like Habit is. So we go Red Mosquito, Mankind, then Habit. A final 3 heavier songs.

Then I wanted to preserve the final 3 of Present Tense, I'm Open, and Around the Bend. I think those 3 back to back is an immaculate choice as is.

I gave it a listen this way and if nothing else it was enjoyable. Try it out! Do you prefer more flow? Or do you like the chaos of the original instead? Why? Let me know.

It should go without saying that this isn't a criticism of the original album. But some will need that spelt out for them.

Fan Content My interview with Pearl Jam fan Dr. Gregor Larson.

As someone who is a fan of entertainment I am never able to keep all the facts straight about certain actors and singers I liked but when I watched Pearl Jam Twenty The Fans are Alright I was amazed about how Pearl Jam fan Gregor Larson could keep all his facts straight about one band. I interviewed him about his love for Pearl Jam.

CC: What Introduced you to the Group? GL: Just a shared interest of Pearl Jam CC: What are your favorite Pearl Jam songs and why? GL: Rearview Mirror and I have seen different versions of the song, but my favorite is the Montana version it has a dynamic range. CC: How did you figure out that you were a fan of Pearl Jam? GL: I was in college and the Ten album came out and it was everywhere and I hummed the song Black from the album Ten. Later when Pearl Jam’s second album Vs. at Rhino Records it was going to be released on a Tuesday and there was a giant line on Monday at midnight. Getting Vs. released prior to Vs. It was insane. And than Vitalogy got released and Pearl Jam kept on getting better and better.

CC: How did you get the job on Pearl Jam Twenty? GL: I wrote an article when I was in Sweden Ranking the best Pearl Jam songs and I got into it from Pearl Jam sometimes having a march madness like tournament for their best songs and the rankings were different each time. Later on the producers read the article and called me and brought me to LA.

CC: What’s harder studying biology or studying Pearl Jam? GL: Biology is a job and Pearl Jam is a hobby.

CC: What do you think of how I want a version of Pearl Jam Twenty with Cameron Crowe on camera? GL: Well one director of Pearl Jam Twenty left and got replaced with Cameron Crowe. I went to the red carpet premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and I got a ticket that night and I got to see them perform. I understand why you want a version with Cameron Crowe on camera. He has a great Rapoor with them and he directed Singles with Pearl Jam.

CC: How does Pearl Jam bring togetherness in their concerts? GL: They inspire giving to their fans and have elicit willingness to tour. They stay together and they have sacrifice. When they were overexposed early in their career they pulled back. When they released the albums Vs. and Vitalogy they didn’t do music videos. They later did a music video for the song Do the Evolution. They didn’t do interviews and they didn’t do magazine interviews. They did no interviews for their album No Code and it is a good album with loops and instruments.

GL: Do you like any of the work Eddie Vedder has done as a solo artist?CC: I love it when I hear him perform Far Behind. GL: I like his album Ukulele Songs. CC: I have heard a few songs from the album I forget which ones I like. GL: He is versatile planning the guitar. He can also play the Ukulele.

Questions Stone Vocals, and songs not (lead) sung by Eddie

First, the songs Eddie doesn't sing lead on:

  • "Mankind" off No Code (1996) — Sung by Stone Gossard. So far, the only song not to feature lead vocals by Eddie on non-compilation album.
  • "Don't Gimme No Lip" off Lost Dogs [Disc 1] (2003) — Sung by Stone Gossard
  • "Sweet Lew" off Lost Dogs Lost Dogs [Disc 2] — Sung by Jeff Ament
  • "The Whale Song"; originally released on Music for Our Mother Ocean, v. 3, (1999) later included on Lost Dogs [Disc 1] — Apparently the songwriter, Jack Irons, sings this. Can anyone confirm?
  • "Turning Mist" — off the 2009 Fan Club single (thanks, Oceans1992) — Sung by Mike McReady.

So, on the topic of Stone Gossard's vocals, always kind of found it odd that he only sings lead on two songs in all of PJ's voluminous catalogue. Other than that, he does spoken word vocals on "Gremmie Out of Control" and he can be heard doing backing vocals on "Glorified G". Otherwise, he is silent. So, just kind of wondering out loud why his vocal output is so sparse in the band's catalogue. He's obviously not the vocalist Eddie is but he's not bad.

Discussion I really like the mysterious songs

Songs like Hard to Imagine, Indifference, Immortality, I'm Open, Strangest Tribe, Of the Girl, Inside Job, and Pendulum. With my personal favourite being Of the Girl.

I was trying to articulate the mysterious feeling these songs have but it's almost indescribable for me. It's as if they're capturing some sort of mood beyond what I can perceive. Something ethereal. Something unknown. I love it.

Try this out: an ancient video pairing Of the Girl with scenes from No Country for Old Men. This succeeds at visually conveying that mysterious feeling I'm talking about. The drum beat powering the song becomes an eerie, ominous ticking clock. Like someone's hunting you down in the desert, or rather that you're the hunter in pursuit.

"How he makes his getaway..."

I love how this band captures so many different moods across their discography!

Other This band and Eddie are keeping me going

I am going through a REALLY tough time right now, or for the past year actually (actually 7yrs, but it's a long story) (literally crying whilst writing this). I cannot explain how much this band keeps me going through this. Particularly Eddie, with his great looks and his humour, abd obviously his voice and everything. It is my DREAM to meet him or encounter him, but I know I never will, and it breaks my heart more. But it is what it is. I love the support of this 10Club. I don't have really any friends left, but you guys are kind of my only friends.

Eddie How did Eddie Vedder film the music videos for Ukulele songs?

I want to know they seem to be hard to film since he was on that rock surrounded by ocean. I hope I can find any films that are making of the music videos for Ukulele Songs.

Tour Best Pearl Jam Tour

What’s your favourite Pearl Jam tour, considering all factors (setlists, tightness of the band, consistency of performances)?

I’d go with the 2006 Tour.

The band may not have been quite as tight as during the 1991 - 1996 tours, but I think the overall package was better.
Eddie’s voice was peak in '91-94 in terms of depth and raw emotions, but screams were excessive in early years and sometimes sounded almost painful; also the setlists - while great - were somewhat more limited.

By 2006 the band had a much wider catalogue of high-level material to draw from. Eddie still governed his growls, but used it moderately, and his clean vocals were still precise and strong.

The sound with Cameron was slightly weaker and less cohesive than with Irons or Abbruzzese, but everything else in 2006 more than made up for it. The setlists were great, the performances were consistently top notch (I can put any 2006 show on and I will have a blast), and the band seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves on stage.

What would be your pick and why?
