Photo Album October 27, 1993 - Kalamazoo, MI, US Nirvana is photographed by Mark Seliger at the Park Trades Center for Rolling Stone.

Seliger, who had flown in from New York specifically for the session, took around 600 photographs to capture the band for the article. As a tongue-in-cheek nod to Nirvana's commercial success, he brought Brooks Brothers suits, which Kurt found amusing and responded to enthusiastically.

Claire Jordan Brooks, a four-month-old girl from Kalamazoo, was also present at the shoot, having been invited to fit the theme of the In Utero album. In approximately 80 photographs, Kurt held Claire in his arms. To Claire's mother's relief, Rolling Stone ultimately abandoned its initial suggestions of shaving the baby's head or painting her fingernails red.

Recalling that day, Claire's mother, Holly, said:

"I was surprised by how nice they were. Real gentlemen - wonderful people."

Little Claire, for her part, received $100 and a photograph with the band, while her father, Ed, was given free tickets and backstage passes.

"When In Utero was about to be released, I was assigned to photograph the band again, and I was sure the musicians would simply refuse. You know, say something like, 'No, we had a terrible experience.' But to my great surprise, they were perfectly fine with me being chosen again as the photographer.

"I came up with an idea for a kind of response to that previous photograph. I ordered three Brooks Brothers suits - as an answer to the message, 'Corporate magazines still suck.' I thought, 'Well, if they don't have a sense of humor about this, we'll just take a regular portrait.' They all put on the suits, and it was hilarious. And you could tell that Kurt was almost giving me a gift, as if to thank me for not ruining that previous cover.

"Then I put together a composition for all three of them - something like a strange diorama with roses and the heads of baby dolls. But it worked best when he was the only one in the frame. The whole thing was supposed to look more like a painting than a photograph. More like an illustration. That shot sat in the archives for about 25 years before we ever used it. And then it became a book cover.

"But whenever I think back to that photo shoot, I think of it as a gift Kurt gave me as a sign of... I don't want to say it was respect exactly, because I don't know... I just feel that, in his own way, he was saying, 'I appreciate that you didn't try to change anything. You didn't try to push us in a different direction. You didn't complain about it. You just let us remain the band that we are.'"

- Mark Seliger

Gear/Equipment Kurt Cobain's Phase 4 Natural Finish Univox Hifliers, all the info I've gathered

The first picture is from the vault of Kurt's belongings, the second is from the in utero tour rehearsals in October 1993, and the final picture is info from KurtsEquipment.com , these two photographs are the only two I could find online of either of them, both of these are the one that stayed natural finished, the one that was repainted in a Van Gogh style has no pictures on the internet (I would LOVE to be proven wrong about that). But my reason for posting this is not just to put out there what info I could find, but also to see if anyone else has any more that I've missed, any pictures of the naked finish one or the van gogh one, or any quotes from anybody close to the band like Ernie Bailey, also the picture from the "Vault" is very blurry and pixelated because it's a bad screenshot, there is a much higher quality version of this photo on the special features of the Montage Of Heck DVD, if anybody has that DVD and has a way to get the full resolution picture, I would greatly appreciate having that image, thank you so much

Question/Request Where’s the interview with Charles Peterson when he talks about Kurt’s stomach issues when he saw him on Capitol Hill, right before Kurt died?

I know he’s told the story a few times. All I know is he ran into Kurt on Capitol Hill.

I’m not talking about the Last 48 Hours of KC, I believe it’s a newer interview he did? Thanks

Question/Request Random question: Was Kurt a fan of the Seattle Mariners?

I’m a big baseball fan so I’m curious if he ever watched them or mentioned them before. They’re kind of underdogs, so a part of me wonders if he liked them.

Nirvana Related 8th grade student googling Heart Shaped Box Music Video

I caught one of my students googling the song. I asked him about it and he said he loves the song (and others) but had just seen the music video and had his mind blown by its weirdness.

We had a nice chat about the band and our favorite songs. Alternative rock is growing in interest amongst my middle school students. It’s awesome to see.

I was unable to offer any reasonable explanation for the video.

Discussion Grade Four Music Assignment I Did On Nirvana Badly

I'm 39 and when I was in grade 4 (probably around 8-9?) music class we were asked to do a presentation your favorite band. You needed to go up infront of the class, talk about the band, why you liked them and then bring a cassette tape to play your favorite song. My favorite band was Nirvana and I loved the song smells like teen spirit. I was a little fuckin kid so I didn't own any Nirvana tapes let alone any tapes aside from...like a Ninja turtles tape, some Andrew Lloyd Webber hits tape and Weird Al, so I went to my older brother for help. He was at the time a teenager and what I considered to be the arbiter of cool so I asked him for "smells" to have him let me know that he didn't have the album Nevermind but instead had In utero which he explained to my 9 year old ass was a way cooler album and that I should play a song from that record instead...NO WAY! I needed smells like teen spirit. I remember the music video pretty much hypnotizing my little ass brain. I was determined and yet for my project it was out of reach....or was it?

Fuck it. Long story short I brought the Weird Al tape I had. I remember my turn to go up next after a kid just wrapped up his presentation on Chumba Wamba. I finished my absolutely no researched presentation and nervously popped in Weird Al's Smells Like Nirvana.

Fuckin fooled everyone! I'm sure including my if I remember right, around 25 year old teacher....

Weird Al saved my ass. Thanks Al.

Just seeing that first 4 second wide shot, wondering if there’s more footage out there.

Also curious what take they ended up using for the promo, if at all? Or did they just not use it and keep it in the archives. I remember in the mid 2000s this was a video that went around on P2P sharing

Discussion Oddly satisfying moments in Nirvana songs and live performances

Sick in bed and bored so I thought I’d make a post for all the small Nirvana moments that make us play their tracks on a loop.

“Where did you sleep last niiiiight” - I don’t even know what this is - vocal cry??

“Where do bad folks go when they DIIIIIEEE” - the crazy distortion here. The “swarm of angry wasps” is so on point.

“One ba⚡️by to another” - another one here in the middle of "baby" - buzzing electric.

“We’ll float around” - the small voice break.

“Then blasphemy!” - switch from screeching to calm mid-word.

Whatever hysteria this is in Negative Creep.

P.S. These are all Kurt but oh well. Feel free to add Krist/Dave/Pat moments too

Photo Album On the morning of October 24, 1990, in London, Nirvana was photographed near their hotel by Martyn Goodacre for NME magazine. During the day, the group posed inside the Dalmacia hotel for Stephen Swift of Melody Maker.

After this, they met with representatives of Polygram/Island to discuss the possibility of signing a contract with the label.

Before the performance at Astoria Theatre, the band was photographed by Matt Anker for Lime Lizard magazine.

📸19-20: Stephen Sweet

'I had to meet the band (Dave Grohl, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic) and their PR Anton Brooks at the Dalmacia hotel in Shepherds Bush. It was really a bed and breakfast and they were all staying in the basement. I dragged them outside but it was freezing so the session was quickly drawn to an end but not before I walked up and down the road looking for locations. I finally settled on a zebra crossing and a launderette. I managed to get a few solo shots before they darted back into their room to get warm. Other photographers that day had to shoot them inside.'
