OC [Mod Post] Community Reminder: Art, Accessibility, and Respect

Hey everyone,

This sub exists as a place to share the art, experiments, and the process behind physical plotting.

Our community has always thrived on sharing open-source code, using shared libraries, and building on tools created by others.

That same open culture applies to how art is made: no matter what tool, software, or workflow someone uses to create a piece, it belongs here.

With that in mind, a quick reminder on how we keep this space constructive:

🖋️ No Gatekeeping: We’re not here to police what counts as "real art" or dictate which tools people should use. Everyone starts somewhere, and using simple or trendy tools is a natural part of learning the craft.

🖋️ If You Don't Like It, Move On: Personal preference isn't a reason to attack someone in the comments. If a piece isn't your style, simply downvote and scroll past. Let the voting system handle community preference without turning comment sections into a style war.

🖋️ What Matters: As long as an artist isn't plagiarizing work and claiming it as their own, they are welcome to share their results here.

We want r/plotterart to be an encouraging space for creators at every level. Keep discussions constructive, report personal attacks, and let’s keep supporting the craft.

-Shorn

I've been thinking about doing this for a while, but I knew that drawing continuous lines on skin would mean dragging, distortion, and likely skips. Switching to dots has breathed new life into the idea! Now I just need a stable, slightly inclined surface to rest my arm on, plus some skinsafe pen easy to wash off. For this first experiment I used a Staedtler fineliner, which I washed off with soap and water.

Feeling my own plotter trying to pierce into my skin is a strange experience indeed, yet oddly satisfying. It's as if it were trying to get to know me more deeply 🙂 .

I just updated my html tool to accommodate with batch iterations over t or any parameters (or rotation!)

It sometimes feels like cheating but I save so much time that I can spend trying new montage and just plotting

hi there- i’m an artist seeking an A0 size (or thereabouts) pen plotter for a new body of work. i’ve used smaller plotters as proof of concept and looking to start making the work at size. willing to personally drive it or ship it within the US if you have one for sale, and alternatively i’m willing to rent out time if you’ve got one in central texas (houston/austin/san antonio). i will be drawing on 30x40 birch panel. thanks!!

This is my XY Theta plotter with control system pen pressure and 18" diameter theta axis that I designed for my Systems Integration in Robotics course. I've been lurking for a while and thought I'd post a video of it in action. Link to the final plotted image in the comments. I stand on the shoulders of giants! I got many of my ideas for this project from this sub, so to all of you who contribute THANK YOU!

I think I was 14 the first time I saw the coin-op. Almost fifty years later I'm still playing with the digital thing to put it back on paper 🙂

Plotted with Acrylic markers on 220 gsm Fabriano F4, 300x300 mm
Colors selected manually!

Grid: 8x8

Rules:
- vertical symmetry
- 60-70% lit pixels, all connected
- no solid squares larger than 2 x2

Coded in Processing.

I haven't tried to count all the allowed combinations yet, but I think there are tens of millions 🙂

The real thing is way cooler than the video!

It's a bit of a tricky technique, but the result is on another level compared to the best "metallic" gel pens I've ever tried.

Paper seems to not work so good , I’m assuming the fibres clog the pen tip. I swapped to a .70 pen for the 1st abd 2nd plots. Plot 2 was on hot pressed card , that worked way nicer. But I forgot to “ prime “ the pen for the lettering so it didn’t render all of it :(. Lesson learned

A few new artworks on canvas.

To ensure the lines are laid down evenly, the canvas must be stretched as tightly as possible. Paint is applied in several layers—typically 3 to 5 layers for each color—with each preceding layer allowed to dry completely. The paint must have a fluid consistency—not too thick—to ensure good adhesion to the canvas surface and to allow it to flow through the tip of a gel pen.

Here is a few of my favorite plots from the last couple of months. Made with Axidraw v3's (A4 and A3 version) - 180g cardstock for the A4s and 170g sketch paper for the A3s. Mainly Uniball Eye (vision) and Pentel energel document pens. SVGs primarily made using touchDesigner and Cavalry.

New pen day!

The first image is the text "This is a test" passed through a reaction diffusion algo, then a contouring algo, something I'm working on for greyscale effects.

The second shot is my awesome new pens! I got 6 fountain pens, and 6 inks, Octopus basic grey set, to continue my seemingly never-ending quest for grey shades. :D :D :D

The second is a re-plot of the geometric truchet I did the other day, which I re-did as a test for the pens. There's a little bit of pen dragging at the bottom as I had to re-set my pen height after turning the holder to 45 degrees, but that's all fixed now.

The fountain pens absolutely rock, they lay down solid lines from any direction and just gliiiiide accross the paper! The lines are really well defined and the ink doesn't soak into the paper as much so they have virtually no pen-down spots like my technicals do.

Both plots were done with one of the fountain pens, Platinum Preppy, with their Platinum Black ink, on my usual A3 white card.

These next few days are going to be very messy, but very fun!
