Enrollment Questions How much is the tuition fee at UM College of Legal Education?

Hi everyone! I’m planning to study law at the University of Mindanao (UM) College of Legal Education, and I’d like to ask current law students or graduates about the tuition fees.
For those currently enrolled, may I know:

How much is your total tuition fee per semester?
How much do you actually pay per semester, including miscellaneous fees and other charges?
Is installment payment available? If yes, how much is the down payment and the monthly installment?
Are there any additional fees I should prepare for throughout the semester?

I’m trying to plan my finances ahead of time, so any information based on your actual experience would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much! 🙏

Enrollment Questions Im a healthcare graduate planning to study law next year.

I don't know if this is the right reddit place to ask but as the title says, kakagraduate ko lang sa isang healthcare field and I'm planning to study law next yr. I know this is a sudden shift since kakagraduate ko lang and plan ko talaga dapat mag med pero I feel like I can't let go of my childhood dream kaya here I am finally choosing to go to law school instead. Since nag start ako sa science talaga (STEM nung shs) I was wondering abt few things since wala akong idea and I don't have any friends and relatives I can ask abt law since ako palang first sa family ko. Hopefully you could help me answer my questions:>

  1. I really wanted to go UP (for financial reasons) kaso I read na parang aside sa entrance exam, may required units sila ng other subjs (like english). Marereject naba agad ako or may chance parin akong makapasok kahit wala akong mga required units + no latin honors? Also could you recommend schools din that doesn't require many prelaw units to enroll

  2. UST, Beda, Ateneo, UP, What would you recommend more in terms of mas favorable for commuters (ex. No very late classes, di masasaraduhan ng lrt, accessible for commuters)?

  3. Do you know someone na nakaraos ng law school with a non prelaw course? How did they manage naman in law school?

Sorry for many questions but i would highly appreciate the help especially this is a new entire field for me T_T.

When I was in first year, I've always wondered in some topics: does it really have to be like that, what if this happened, why those are the only elements, etc. Then the common reply we would receive is: Pass the Bar first, then question the law later when you become a Congressman. So, law school has just actually become a Memory School, not Law School, because you are just forced to absorb and memorize legal jargons, esp if you came from an undergrad where critical thinking and debate was common, like Philosophy and Political Science. Suddenly, the "thinking" stops in law school, and you are now forced to become like automaton machines.

I also wanna add, though this might be irrelevant, the socratic method has been wrongly used by some law teachers. For example, they use that method as a way to hide their lack of preparation going to class, esp those who were "Gross and Habitual Neglect of Duty" in preparing for class. Worse, some teachers go absent for weeks or a month. But when they go to class, some of them just talk about what happened in their work or what happened to their kids - and they do that for the most time of the class. Are we really studying the law, or the "Life and Works of Atty..."? And they blame you if you aren't properly prepared coming to class. I think both students and teachers should be prepared, BECAUSE WHAT'S THE POINT OF OUR TUITION FEE? Some teachers also abuse that method by intentionally giving personal or excessive remarks against the student. Real talk, just because someone is talented or bright in that field, doesnt mean they are also a good teacher or manager. Look at Michael Jordan, very good as a player, but very bad as the manager of the Washington Wizards and the Charlotte Hornets.

Btw, for those who want to go to law school, be prepared to get your TORs destroyed. Why? Im not saying it will always happen and Im not referring to those cases where you failed because you lacked preparation despite having a good teacher. Some teachers will give you a wrong grade or wont grade you properly. Heck, I even had a teacher who gave all these quizzes, recits, and assignments, only for him to say the next semester that he would fail anyone who couldn't recite properly in the first week of the second semester. Imagine Subject A in the first semester: when it ended, he wasn't able to give us a final grade yet. When the second semester started for Subject B, with the same teacher, he told us he would give a failing grade in Subject A to those students who failed to recite well in the 1st week of Subject B. Your Subject A grade suddenly depended on your performance in the first week of Subject B. Yeah, welcome to the world where socratic method has been abused for a long time, and where teachers aren't properly made liable unlike some colleges. So, law schools have been very good at failing law students if they dont meet their standards, like a good recits, BUT SOME LAW SCHOOLS ARE THE WORST WHEN IT COMES TO FIRING BAD LAW TEACHERS.

Is going to an AMA school for pre-law a bad idea?

My parents are offering that I go to a smaller AMA school for accountancy that would let me graduate sooner in 3 years and in return, they would pay for my law school tuition. The alternative is staying at a more difficult but known university that I love but it would take me 5 years + law school would not be paid for because I have siblings who will go to college at that time. I am newly diagnosed with bipolar disorder, so learning to manage the illness is a factor too

Option 1: A smaller AMA school

The school is very small, literally just one hallway, and I’m worried about the quality of education. However, I could graduate in around three years instead of five. The academic system is also less demanding, without retention exams and pre-board requirements, which I think could make it more manageable given my recently diagnosed bipolar disorder.

The biggest advantage is that my parents could pay for my law school tuition afterward. Becoming a lawyer is my actual long-term goal, and accountancy is more of a stepping stone for me. Since I have siblings, I know my parents cannot necessarily afford both an expensive undergraduate degree and law school.

Option 2: Staying at my current university
This is the school I genuinely prefer and love. I have friends, organizations, extracurricular activities, good facilities, and teachers I appreciate. I’ve found things I love about the campus and have started building a university life that excites me.

However, the degree would take around five years, the academic requirements are more demanding, and tuition is more expensive. Because of the financial burden, my parents likely wouldn’t be able to pay for law school, meaning I’d have to work while studying law.

At the AMA school, I could protect my finances, potentially have a more manageable academic experience, and secure funding for the career I ultimately want. But I’m worried about the quality of my education and missing out on the opportunities, friendships, and personal growth I could experience at my current university : (

At my current university, I feel happier and see more opportunities to develop academically, socially, and professionally. But I’d be taking on a longer, more expensive degree, potentially greater stress, and the burden of supporting myself through law school

I’m also trying to be realistic about my bipolar disorder. I don’t want to choose an environment that makes managing my health unnecessarily difficult, but I also don’t want to underestimate myself or make decisions based on the assumption that I can’t handle academic challenges.

What would you do in my situation?

- How much does the quality of your undergraduate school matter when your ultimate goal is law school?
- Would graduating from a lesser-known school put me at a disadvantage in the long run?

College Degree Recommendations I’m having a dilemma on what to take in college.

Hi! Is it okay if I will take up Bs Stat or Bs Mathematics/applied mathematics as my pre-law? I really want to take them but my family is insisting it’s not “fitting” as a pre-law. What should I do?

should i shift to accountancy or stay in legal management?

1st year legal management student here who plans on going to law school after. im still so torn between accountancy and legma. im not so 100% sure kasi if i really wanna pursue law in the future kasi what if i end up not liking it 😭

i’m thinking din na if magaccountancy ako, secured na agad ang mga opportunities ko once i graduate, unlike if i graduate with a legal management degree.

pls give me advice :(

Law School Recommendations 5 things worth your money

kinda late to the trend but sharing my tried and tested essentials (as a stationery enthusiast) that have helped me a lot through the years as a 4L
student

  1. Filed Pen Capsule - pencil case and pen holder in one! compact but can actually fit a lot. been using this since 1L kasi ang ganda tlaga ng quality niya from the faux leather to the stitching. may free name engraving din sila
  2. Zebra Sarasa Clip Pens - i like this better than muji. it dries quickly, doesnt smudge, glides smoothly on paper, and refillable din siya
  3. Pilot Kire-Na Double-Sided Highlighters - no bleeding and ink blots! what i like most about this highlighter is the plastic guides that help control the angle and pressure so mas straight and pantay na yung paghighlight ko
  4. 3M Post-It Sticky Notes and Index Tabs - love this brand kasi hindi nawawala ang dikit niya. bought mine a few years back pero sticky pa rin yung sticky notes and index tabs ko. hindi rin madaling magcurl yung edges
  5. Meewoo Acrylic Book Stand - quite pricey but worth it imo. can be used for books/ipad/laptop and madali lang iadjust ang height and angle. rotatable din siya 360° and has two flexible page clips

ayun lang hope this helped future law students somehow!

disclaimer: links posted are affiliate links since i’m also trying to earn a little on the side, especially since my dad was recently retrenched. but these are all genuine recos of products i personally use and have tried and tested. thank you!

Law School Recommendations FEU IL or AUSL? Help me decide 😭

Hi everyone! I recently passed the entrance exams for both FEU IL and AUSL, and until now, hindi pa rin ako makapag-decide kung saan ako mag-e-enroll. Both are great schools, kaya lalo akong nahihirapan mamili. 🥹

For context, I’m currently working, pero very flexible naman yung job ko, so hindi magiging issue yung work schedule or commute. Ready na sana ako magenroll, kaso hanggang ngayon sobrang undecided pa rin ako. Haha!

Sa mga current students, alumni, or anyone na may experience with either school, can you share your thoughts?

  1. Kumusta naman yung environment, profs, workload, and overall experience sa law school?
  2. How about the Bar prep and support for working students?
  3. I’d also love to hear kung ano yung pros and cons ng each school, and if given the chance to choose again, would you still pick the same school?

I know law school is going to be challenging either way, but I want to make an informed decision and choose the school that would be the best fit for me.

Any honest insights or advice would be really appreciated. Share your thoughts naman para maliwanagan na ako at makapag-decide na rin. 😭

Thank you so much!

Enrollment Questions Pre-Law Requirements

Nag enroll ako before para mag take ng teaching units. Pero after 1 month nag drop ako. Not officially though. Like d nalang ako pumasok. Tinamad na rin ako pumunta sa school to formally file. Yung transfer credentials ko eh nabigay na ng undergrad school ko dun sa grad school. Now, I’m planning to enroll LS and I’m just wondering pano yung requirements ko let’s say mag try ako sa UP or any orher LS. Do I need to mention na nag enroll ako before ng grad school? Pano yung TOR na irrequest ng LS and other requirements, sa grad school ko na ba yun hihingin or sa undergrad ko pa din? I’m confused pls help 😭
