Self Post ✔ It is with great pleasure we announce a new mod...

First, I'm gonna get Brady Listed for saying "with great pleasure" in the title.

But, yes.. a few weeks ago the mod team tidied up our mod list - removing some long inactive mods.

And, we've brought on a new one.. please welcome u/Larky17 as a new PnS mod.

He'll be our first non-LE mod here, and is one of the dirty hose draggers. And we suspect he'll be a nice breath of fresh air to the sub, cause unlike me and most of the other mods, he enjoys an occasional troll-spar.

For those verified who may be wondering - no, he doesn't do verifications or have access to that data.

I await new and varied shenanigans. If nothing else, having him able to reapprove his own memes that are constantly getting reported will be a time saver.

***MODPOST*** Don't copy that floppy

Hey y’all, it’s your favorite?,or maybe just the only available resident geek cop mod..

We’ve been getting more people asking to share apps, websites, scripts, browser extensions, and other tools they’ve made. We’re not against that. Some of them might actually be useful, and plenty of good tools started because somebody got annoyed with the way something was being done and decided to make their own to solve that annoying problem.

But we do need people to slow way way down and think before downloading something made by a random redditor.

This has gotten a lot easier with AI. Someone can now build a decentish looking app without having much experience or any coding experience. This does not automatically mean the app is bad or that the person has malicious intentions, but it does mean the person who made it may not completely understand what the code is doing behind the scenes. An app can work exactly like it is supposed to and still be insecure..

It might store information in an unsafe way, use old software libraries/dependancies, send data somewhere the creator did not realize, or ask for permissions it does not actually need. The person who made it may have copied code from somewhere else or had AI generate most of it and never really looked or understood what it was doing.

Again, that does not necessarily mean they are trying to steal anything.

Sometimes people just do not know what they do not know (as I’m sure most of us working in this field know too well). Of course, there is also the other possibility, which is that the app is actually malware.

Being active in a law enforcement subreddit does not prove someone is a cop, works in IT, knows anything about cybersecurity, or is even who they say they are. It means they have a Reddit account and figured out how to click the join button.

The main thing we want to get across is this:

Do not install random or unapproved software on a department computer.

Your work computer is not the place to test a random redditor’s side project.

Even a simple app could potentially access files, passwords, browser sessions, email, reports, network shares, or other things available to that computer. It could also create a policy issue for you, even if the software itself turns out to be harmless. Do you think you department give you permission to install or run random software? I doubt it..

“Someone on Reddit said it was safe” is probably not going to be a great explanation to your chain of command.

Using your personal devices to run apps is not completely risk free either. Most people have saved passwords, banking information, tax documents, personal email, cloud storage, family pictures, and access to other accounts on their home devices.

Your personal laptop is not a burner device just because it does not belong to your department. Pay attention to what the app is asking for.

A scheduling app probably does not need administrator access.

A browser extension probably should not need permission to read and change everything you do online unless that is actually part of what it does.

A report writing assistant tool should not need your Microsoft 365 password.

If the permissions seem way toooo invasive or do not make sense, stop. Ask yourself, why. If you’re at that point, you probably shouldn’t be running said software.

Also, if the devs tell you to disable Defender, ignore SmartScreen, turn off your AV, sideload an unsigned app, or run some random PowerShell command as administrator, do not just shrug it off and do it. Bad idea.

Yes, security software and AV sometimes get things wrong but it also gets a lot of things right.

A few other things people tend to put too much trust and faith in:

“It’s on GitHub.”

That is better than getting a mystery download link, but it does not automatically mean the software is safe. Most people are not going to sit down and review thousands of lines of code, and the file being offered for download may not even match the code posted online.

“VirusTotal says it’s clean.”

That means nothing detected it at the time it was scanned. It does not mean the app is secure, well written, or not collecting information it should not have.

“It’s only a website.”

Websites can still collect anything you type, paste, or upload.

Do not upload reports, evidence, body camera footage, victim information, criminal justice information, employee records, internal documents, or anything else sensitive into an unknown website or AI clanker tool.

Once you upload something, you may have no idea where it is stored, how long it is kept, who can access it, or whether deleting it actually….deletes anything.

For people who want to share something they made, just be upfront about it.

Tell people what it does, what permissions it needs, whether it collects information, whether anything leaves the device, where the data is stored, and whether the source code is available.

If AI helped build it, that is not automatically a problem. But you should understand your own app well enough to explain what it accesses and where the data goes.

The mods will remove posts that do not give people enough information, ask users to bypass security protections, request sensitive data, or encourage people to install unauthorized software on department systems.

We are not trying to discourage people from building useful things. We are just asking everyone to use the same level of caution they would hopefully use before opening an email attachment from someone named supertotallyrealnotfakelieutenant@hotmail.com.

And please do not install NeverWriteAReportAgain_FINAL_v7_REALFINAL_FIXEDv3.exe.msi on a department computer…or your personal computer.

Why do they suck so bad?

Ordered uniform items I need from my agency’s “portal” They're listed as in stock. Received delivery but the actual uniform items were listed as back ordered on the receipt. I called customer service only to be told the items weren't actually in stock and I'd have to wait at least a month and a half. I posted a review on yelp. Yeah, I know I’m “that guy”. The alleged owner replies with a number and offered to “make it right”. The number went to voicemail.

Just tell me the truth when ordering. That way I have a realistic expectation. Plenty of other online stores have live inventory tracking.

Milestone Gift Ideas for an Officer

To all current, former members and partners of members, etc,

I’m looking for suggestions on a good milestone celebration gift for my partner, who is an RCMP officer. I’m thinking of putting together a curated basket with useful and thoughtful items.

For those familiar with the lifestyle, he works in a very secluded area and already has most of the basics, such as a duty bag, “oh sh*t” kits, and similar essentials. I’m hoping to find something a little different that he might appreciate or find useful.

Unfortunately, because of the nature and location of his work, I’m limited when it comes to gifting experiences or more care-oriented gifts.

I’d love to hear any ideas or recommendations from those who have been in the field or have gifted something similar.
Thank you in advance!

Video Osaka Prefectural Police Riot Police Unit in action during the 22nd Nishinari Riot (1990)

On October 2, 1990, residents of the Nishinari Ward has gathered to protest against the Daijosai, a ritual conducted in the November after the Emperor is enthroned. During the protest, a speaker's dog bit and injured a police officer which led to him being arrested. At 6 pm, protesters gathered in front of the Nishinari Police Station to demand the speaker to be released. However, news broke out that gang detectives of the Nishinari Police Station has taken a 9 million yen bribe from the yakuza. As the area is dominated by poor day-labourers who are often exploited by gangs. The anger of the protesters erupted and soon it turned into a riot. For the next 6 days, rioters joined by delinquents and the local bosozoku rioted across the ward, destroying shops, vending machines and burning down a train station before they calmed down and dispersed.

In the video, the riot police tactics align more with ancient warfare often relying on charges and melees to disperse the rioters. This is because the spirit of bushido is still very alive in the police especially for the riot police. Modern Japan police was formed from the disestablished samurai class after the Meiji Reformation. During the Satsuma Rebellion, the first Superintendent General of the Metropolitan Police Department and father of modern Japan Policing, Kawaji Toshiyoshi, formed the Battotai (Draw-sword unit) from the best swordsmen of the MPD and played a critical role in winning the war. The spirit of Bushido, thus still lives on to the modern era and melee combat is still the mainstay of the riot police to this day. However, water cannon trucks are also available and is often the second preferred equipment used in riot control. Tear gas is available after being introduced to it by the Hong Kong Police during the 1967 Communist Riots, although effective, it proved to be unpopular because officers viewed it as un-bushido.

Self Post Morbid curiosity

I had a random thought while driving on the interstate…

Cops / law enforcement of the web,
Have you ever let it rip with a suspect trapped in the back of your car?
And if not, would you?
I feel like it’s a major power play to fart with someone locked in the back of your cruiser. No ability to roll the windows down or escape.
Have you done it?

Self Post As an engineer with over a decade of experience. Is it possible to transfer and become a detective in RCMP or some type of role in that direction.

I understand they say you need to he an officer. Work 5-10 years, then MAYBE have a shot etc. But the USA FBI from my understanding takes engineers into other roles etc. I live in Canada. I already make tons of money. I dont feel like cutting my salary by 1/3 to cross my fingers for something that might never happen. Especially with 4 kids and a wife. Is my only hope moving to the USA?

Self Post Question to LEO’s as a foreign (not-US) driver

I’m actually curious how LEO’s react towards foreign people (people on vacation to be more specific) driving on the US highways. Are you more lenient towards them due to them not always knowing the law 100%, or are you even more strict towards them?

I know you should read up on the driving laws before you visit but it’s also way easier for a non-US driver to make silly mistakes that might get them pullen over more often

Anyone been to TLETA in Nashville?

I’m potentially looking at being sent to TLETA for academy some time in the near future, and I was wondering if anyone went there personally and could tell me what you know about what to expect, day to day life there, and maybe some tips to succeed?

Self Post Why do I never get tickets when I’m pulled over?

I have a terrible memory and frequently forget about renewing my registration. I get the card in the mail and promptly forget. Don’t worry, I’m the same with other things in my life lol. Suffice to say, I’ve been pulled over a few times for late registration. Once for speeding. I’ve never gotten a ticket, though. The only time I’ve gotten a ticket was when I was found at fault for an accident where I rear ended someone. He slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting a squirrel and I hit him :/. Ended up not getting any points off my license because the judge said I had an “excellent attitude” according to the cop who worked with me on scene. I’m a female in my mid 20s and I do try to be polite when pulled over and honest about my station. Could my attitude be why?

I just stopped using Zyns after like 3 years. I know this is basically a job requirement so will kicking the habit make me unhirable?

Edit: Y'all are awesome. On a more real note, 24 hours down and my resting HR dropped from 80 to 67. I'm using caffeine pouches to deal with the oral fixation. So now I'm doing like 800-1200 mg of caffinee not sure which is wprse

Self Post If cost and ammo logistics wasn't an issue, what would be the best handgun to issue to police departments in the united states?

Lets say congress passes a law that standardizes US local police department service pistols. It also amounts to what is essentially an unlimited budget for manufacturing and acquiring both the handgun and its ammunition, so we can put aside logistical questions about less common calibers. what would be the best gun for America's cops to carry assuming money is no issue? Keep in mind the parameter for this is just city and county police departments we're not talking about FBI, state police, or highway patrol. I understand that a rural police department may have different needs than the NYPD but if we had to nationally standardize it what gun would be the "best"?

Self Post What’s to nice vs being a dick

So recently I had several of my partners observe my traffic stop that they had and wanted me to take contact and I did.

So, how I do traffic stops or how I’ve been doing, is I approach with being “too nice.”

Meaning I said, “Hey man, I’m OFC [insert here] the reason why I pulled you over you blew a 65 in a 30mph, you in a rush to get somewhere or anything.”

He explained his reasons and I just say, “okay man, we all make mistakes, with that being said, license, registration, insurance, sir.”

We do all the speaking on the radio, while my partner is writing the ticket, I try to strike up a conversation about speeding and being ticketed on base and slowing down.

He asks, “am I being suspended,”
I reply, I don’t know, yet.

Come back to the squad vehicle and my other partners and to find out my partner suspended him.

Anyways nothing happened after that. Just that he couldn’t drive anymore.

So after that, I was told I was being too friendly and too nice. And that I have to find that middle ground of being a dick and being nice. My thing is why am I going to be a dick to someone who’s probably already pissed who’s getting pulled over.
Yes I understand being assertive, but these are still people. Does it get under my skin that these people run stop signs and speed? Yes.

Maybe I’m being an idealist.

Self Post AI transcription editing times

Hi everyone. I'm wondering how long it takes to edit an AI produced transcription from your body cams? So let's say you have a 3 hour interview recorded with your body cam, how long will it take you to proofread and edit the AI transcription so you can include it in your case file or submit it to the DA?

Support Clerk in Probation and Parole

I recently applied for this job and the interview day is coming up fast. I'm so nervous, and already feel incredibly under qualified as this would be my first serious job after dropping out of college due to not affording it. I also don't think I can get 3 letters of recommendation in time. Should I be this worried? Am I in over my head?
